Hi all --

October was quite the month up in Nebraska. It started with a ton of work projects
and personnel issues to sort out. On the 13th, I became one of the personnel
issues and, unfortunately, was released by the University. Between
budget cuts, differences in personalities, and a perceived lack of leadership
(ouch!), I guess I became expendable. I had enough vacation to last midway
through last week and we're sitting ok in the bank account... should be
good for at least 5-6 months and I've already got three active applications
in for positions where I am qualified. Anyway, even with everything going
on I should have been able to take time to thank two very special OBCers.

First, when Bob Reed posted a message in late September about his son's artskills,
I went out to look at his work and was simply amazed! I wrote to Bob
and asked him to pass on my admiration to his son. A couple weeks later,I
received a package in the mail with an absolutely stellar drawing of my all-time
favorite Twin, Harmon Killebrew! WOW!!! When I get my webpage resurrected,
a scan of Connor's drawing will find a permanent place atop my Twins
wantlist. I can't emphasize enough how talented Connor is and how unworthy
I feel to have this drawing. As if the amazing drawing wasn't enough, Bob
tossed in a pair of '61 Post cards of Twins Bob Allison and Billy Consolo.
Both are suspiciously free of creases and the fan who liberated them fromthe
back of the box was careful to use sharp scissors, a keen eye, and a steady
hand. Simply amazing... Thank you so very much Bob and Connor. I am still
working on finding pictures of MLB stars when they were in the College
World Series for you. I'm going to have to scan some negatives but, giventhe
work situation, should have a little time to do that soon.

The second package that arrived was a wonderful package of eight 1960 Toppsbaseball
+ 2 Wally Yonamine cards from Rob Fitts. Highlights from the lot of
'60s include Earl Averill, Roy Seivers, and Milt Pappas. I also really enjoyed
reading the back of the Yonamine cards, as did my daughter. A book order
should be forthcoming soon.

Well guys (and Linda), I'm headed off to northern Minnesota to spend time with
some family at "The Ranch" over the opening weekend of deer season. I no
longer hunt, but enjoy taking pictures, making drives, and teaching them a
lesson or two about cribbage and poker. :-)

Take care and I hope that I can become more active in the next couple of months.
I'm so behind that I could spend the next year and still not catch upwith
all I owe you all. I still contend that there is simply not a nicer group
of folks that those who comprise the OBC group (from its inception to present).

Have a great week...

Rob Fitts brings back old memories of when my wantlist was (relatively)
easy to hit and Monday's mail almost certainly contained an envelope filled

my American card sets, his envelope had two hits to a 1948 Japanese (6

contained the obligatory two Wally Yonamine cards, one of which I have

shows all six circular cards (either that or they all have severely

My new Writing on Front set got off to a flying start this week!

Ed Schott answered the call with a nifty sleeve of 9 WOF's mostly 1960's 'traded' versions, crossing out one team and writing in another. Also included is a priceless 1958 Billy O'Dell with all sorts of defacing to his face!

Richard Dingman sent along a small puffy - appropriately re-used with all sorts of writing on it. Inside were some gems that included a 1972 Bill Buckner where someone drew a picture of a baseball on his bat with some sort of laser vision from his eyes to the ball! Another hillarious card is a 1967 Vic Roznovsky who looks an awful lot like Frankenstein!

EEK also sends a six pack my way, including a pair of 1962's which I'll use for my own set and four more WOF's. Someone tried to draw Jumbo ears and a stache on the 1959 Bob Anderson but the artist must not have like the results as his entire face was scribbled out!

The wantlist will be posted tonight. As I get further into this project I'll scan some of these beauts for all to see!

Great stuff guys! Thanks so much for the great cards...and good laughs!

Hi all -- I, too, was blessed with a wonderful package of cards ranging from practical to exotic from Linda Fitak. My theory is that Linda is trying to replace the membership census with her own Fitak census by sending an envelope to every member of the group. I wholly approve! :-) Linda's hits to my card sets include a 1960 Topps Baseball #217, Charley Grimm and a 1967 Philadelphia Football #65, Ron Kramer. Hits to my player collections included a cool UPper Deck First Class Legends of Christy Mathewson, an incredibly coveted 1981 Detroit News card of Germany Schaefer, and a beautiful Conlon #518 of Bibb Falk who, it notes, was "one of the unsung heroes of baseball." I could agree more. Linda also added a couple of typecards to my nonsport typecard list, including a 1974 B27 Brooke Bond Tea (British) card from "The Sea - Our Other World" and 1987 Brooke Bond Tea (British) card from "Unexplained Mysteries of the World". Just for good measure, Linda tosses in a 1991 Wiz Mets card of Dick Smith and a 1990 Dodgers Target #665 Pete Richert. What a wonderful envelope of cards! What an amazingly generous person. Bob Reed is the first WOF contributor to take advantage of the 'childhood exemption' by filling some empty spots with cards both he and his brother owned as kids. They marked their own cards with their intials to know who's cards were who's. Fifteen cards in all highlighted by a 1970T '69 AL HR leaders card featuring Killer, Reggie and Frank Howard each with some nifty facial hair added. Also included is a 1975 Frank Duffy which is truly a piece of art! Thanks for the cool cards Bob...and the great stories on each! Linda Fitak had so many WOFs she had to send two envelopes! Each one contained some awesome WOFs and some other goodies I have come to know and love. Included with these are my first 'half-traded' example: a 1960 Win Savers card with a line drawn between Turk Lown and Gerry Staley and a big 'KC' written on Staley's side. Another of note is a meticulously altered 1959 Casey Wise which tunred into Rick Herrcher. When I get around to creating the WOF HOF, it will surely include a 1977 OPC Ed Figuerola who was apparently 'wanted for robbery' as his pitcher position was crossed out and replaced by 'bandido'! What a barrel of laughs this group is! Thanks much Linda! Randy Welk also got into the act this week by sending along 4 from 1970 each with some good ink on the fronts. The total frenzy non-stopelectric atmosphereat a stadium does not happen to often. I know there are moments of it, yet prolonged consistent noise is uncommon. I remember watching on TV the 90's Braves teams and the Tomahawk Chop and thought what a great experience for the fans. They are all involved in the game. My moment was in 2002. The Twins were playing the Angels in Anaheim for theDivision title and I took my daughter to the game. At the door they handedout "Thunder Sticks" which every used. The game and crowd was so intense and back-and-forth that we were standing and clapping these Thunder Sticks the whole game. We were watching the game through a sea of moving inflated sticks. The Angels won the game and the crowd got even louder. I wasworn out after that game. We sat in our seats for about 30 minutes before walking out to the car. I couldn't hear for a couple days. It was louder than the rock concerts I went to years ago. One of my best experiences with my Daughter. She was eight at the time and still remembers it as if it was yesterday. Linda Fitak and Rob Fitts hit me hard about a week ago and I've finally made the time to thank them for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Linda gave me many treasures to sift through with a superb mix of old vintage cardboard, non-sports, and new/old items that have me thinking about the past viewed through the present. Thank you Linda -- you have a very well deserved reputation for handing out volumes of interesting cardboard that has a variety no one else can come close to! Rob Fitts sent out an OBC-wide mailing of Japanese baseball material. The 1948 Menko set of six fits my collecting parameters: old, small set, available. Amazing material. Thank you Rob -- it is so cool that we have our own Japanese baseball And a huge thanks to all our men and women, relatives and friends, who serve in the military and work far from home and loved ones. I think that's recognized as the trivia question answer for first TV show broadcast in color. There were color sets back then . In 1954 they became publically available, but the cost was prohibitive and most shows still broadcast in B&W...it wasn't until the mid sixties when nearly all programs were shot in color. As they do on Drew Carey's old show "Who's line ?"...the points don't matter and everyone is a winner...count 150 points if you saw the K, F & O reference and smiled a bit. add 214 points if you remember your first color TV and what show ( I do!, 1977 Wonder Woman :) 442 points if you opened packs of Bowman in 1955. 37 points if you only watch High Def channels now, and snub your nose at analog or Standard Def. I'm at 401 points!
