Please forgive me for being so slow and especially if I have left you out. I really try to express thankspromptly, and I DO appreciate all the cards that come my way. If you sentme something and never heard from me about it, do me a favor and remind me! That would be great. Oh, and if any of these are repeats, sorry. Better twice than not at all. Subject: Happy Surprise

JOHN LEROUX wishes me "Happy OBC Holidays" with a surprise DCP, a 1955 Topps
Jim Hegan and a 1954 Bowman #203, Vic Janowicz. John, these are both great
hits! I love the description on the Hegan card "Batting averages don't always
tell the value of a ballplayer. An outstanding example is Jim Hegan.
Year after year he's one of the most important men on the Indians because
of his great defensive ability, and his tremendous amount of baseball know-how."
That just warms my heart. And of course, I'm always happy for help
chipping away the 54 Bowman set. I'm going to try to complete this set in
2010, or come as close as I can.
Ironically, this Janowicz card is a pretty sweet Tipton Near Mint. The front
is too clean for Mint--sure it's got "catcher" and "H" and "1754" written
on it, and a few assorted creases and scuffs and corner dings--but the back
is nearly covered with paper someone glued on, so that only NO. 203 in the
baseball and Catche (sic) are clearly legible. The back reads "Vic first"
and that's all, so far. This may be my chance to try out the glue removing
procedure recently discussed on Ramblings. I say "ironically" because I
just started that Ramblings thread about writing on cards. This card epitomizes
my view that the first goal is having a card instead of a hole in your
set and you worry about condition later (or not at all, depending on the
set and your priorities).

So thank you, John, for the great cards! Thanks for getting me down to 52 1954
Bowmans. Thanks for the great surprise, and a joyful and surprising New
Year to you!

Good 'ol Mac Wubben graced my mailbox today with a great envelope! Inside
were not one, not two, but THREE hits to my '55 Topps set: Billy O'dell, Gair
Allie, & Danny Schell. But that's not all! Also included was a '70 Topps
Juan Marichal! I'd have loved to be at the infamous game where Juan gave
Johnny Roseboro 14 stitches with HIS BAT!

These cards ALL rank as "Tipton Poor" condition... one of them almost gave

My OBC Santa is Jim Silva. Jim was kind enough to send my Santa package out
on the 18th of December. When I did not give thanks on Christmas day, Jim
emailed to see if I received the package. I had not. We have been emailing
each other for the past 2 weeks or so. In that time an email on the Ramblings
server stated thatsomeone received a package almost a year later. That
sat in the back on my mind, perhaps USPS will deliver it in time for Christmas

Well today Jim's package arrived and was well worth the wait. I opened the package
with my Daughter and we had a good time looking at the Birth years of
the players. Frank Hayes born Oct 1915 was the earliest we found. That's95
years ago, and Frank Hayes card is a 1940 Playball. Jim also included apair
of 48 Bowmans, a pair of really loved 54 Topps, a 54 Redman Ashburn, a
60 McCovey All-Star Rookie and a pair of 74 Team Checklist of the Reds and
Redsox. Jim, worth the wait and great Christmas gift. Thanks you very much.

I had an extra good time going through these cards with my Daughter. She got
excited when she saw the McCovey card, as she likes watching Giants home games
and being able to look atMcCovey cove from the same location abovethe

worth of mail at the post office. Thanks go out to:

Anthony Arbeeny, whose packages was destroyed by the postal service (it came
in one of those =93sorry=94 envelopes we all hate to see). Lucky for me, the
pleasures inside were spared a similar fate, as nine 1975 minis (with, in
my best Adam Sandler voice, Hall of Famer Rod Carew), a 1960 Topps variation,
and a 51 Bowman high number of Ray Noble! Great stuff Double A!

Thunder Dan Austin also took a trip into my mailbox, send two vintage Philadelphia

Nice hits Dan!

Bob D=92Angelo took part in the OBC Secret Santa project this year, and he was

Rick Lyons hammers the Old London coin list...with about 15 hits. There are
only 40 coins in the set, so that's about 40% of the entire set. One 70 OPC

What a great OBC day! First I pull a hamstring last night playing racquetball,
so around 6:00 this morning, I call my work and bang in sick....something
I almost never do (that is, I rarely call in sick, but I'm always doingsomething
stupid to hurt myself). As soon as I hung up the phone, it rangagain.
It's LYNN MILLER. I was befuddled and not sure what was going on,so
I had to ask if he was the OBC version of Lynn Miller. It was!! Are you
kidding me? He had just finished some kind of overnight cannonball run from
Vegas to Salt Lake City, so he wanted to know if I was home today. Talk
about perfect timing. I told him to come on over...my wife is at work, and
I'm doing "nuthin". It's was like Christmas in January waiting for an OBC
hero to show up.

LYNN dropped off a '68 Jim Palmer card, and a stack of Utah Jazz/Stars cards.
LYNN, and his beautiful wife Joanne (did I spell that right?), looked real
tired after their all night drive, so I let them crash for a nap in my ED
PIKE OLYMPICS COCA-COLA room. Thanks for the cards and thinking to callme
today LYNN. The visit was a treat, and the pleasure was all mine.

After LYNN departed for his return trip to Vegas, I wandered out to get themail,
and now ED SCHOTT shows up in the mailbox: 7 '63s and 2 '68s!

Thank you ED and LYNN. One day, two OBC legends, and I didn't go to work.....perfect!

over a 1980 Kelloggs card of Stretch McCovey. He also sends over 21 hitsto
my 1975 mini set. HOFer Rich Gossage is included in this group. Thank
you John! Great hits.

THe buried envelope was from ANT ARBEENY. Ant sends over a great DCP. Thefirst
card is from the early 70's Globetrotters set - Curly Neal. That initself
is a great hit, but he doesn't stop there. He includes a 1960 Fleercard
of Cy Young. Wow! Great DCP Ant!

BILL ASHTON sends over the third envelope this week. It arrived yesterday.Although
uv, it included 30 Mickey Mantle cards. Great additions Bill!

Finally, I received an envelope that turned out to be a set killer. Although
it was a uv set, I'm mentioning it here. Our own FRANK THOMAS sent overthe
last four cards I needed to complete the 09 Topps set. Frank has joined
the heroes list. Thanks Frank!

Hello All,

It=E2=99s time to ring in the New Year with some
goodies from the fine collectors of this group. The following
has arrivedin the past few weeks from:

Dan Austin slips a SCP my way from the `71-72 Topps Basketb all set with home-towner
Bob Lanier of the Pistons. Thanks to Dan for adding this sharp
cornered beauty to my collection leaving me with just (1) more to go.
Anybody have an extra Wilt Chamberlain card for this set??? Thanks
so much for sending =BD the cards I needed for the set Dan!!!

Richard Labs comes in from out of the blue to hit (2) vintage footb all sets.
A `48 Bowman card of Clyde Goodnight and a `51 Bowman card of Fred
Morrison. I don=E2=99t remember the last `48 card I received either
in trade or purchase so this little package was a great surprise.
Thanks Richard.

John Leroux surprises with a SCP from the `53 Topps set with a back variation
card of Giants John Anttonelli in perfect OBC condition. Another fine
addition to the collection =E2=93 Thanks John!!!

Rick Lyons becomes the first trader to attain hero status and become a set killer
for me in the new decade and New Year. Rick does this by sending
me the Lew Alcindor poster for the `70 71 Topps Basketb all poster set.
There are quite a few that need to be upgraded but I now have all of
them from this sm all subset. Thanks a lot Rick =E2=93 you=E2=99re
my first 2010 HERO!!!

Lynn Miller sends an item that depicts the first (5) inductee into the b all
Baseb all H all of Fame. Even though the item is very shiny the subject
matter is definitely vintage in nature. Thanks again for the cool
Lynn .

T.J. Valacak who all ows me to raid his T-218 singles collection by sendingme
back variations of Knockout Brown and Sailor Burke. These are squeaky
clean cards that will not require upgrades and a big help for my collection.
T.J. also slams my TOP 10 list with a card of John Riddle from
the `53 Topps set which brings me to needing just 200 cards for the `51 -
`80 Topps quest. Way too cool T.J.

What a fantastic start to the New Year =E2=93 thanks to these and all the
traders whose path I expect to cross this coming year. BE WELL!!!

REGARDS --------- MARK

To Glenn Codere for a neatly trimmed '52 Bowman Bobby Thomson. Fitting that
the legendary Scotsman comes to me from Glenn who points out that the card
has made the trans-Atlantic flight some four times - giving great credence
to the term "Flying Scotsman," not to mention, as Glenn points out, the
OBC lead in frequent flyer miles.

Much appreciated.

For a great addition to the Hank collection. It's from Panarizon Publishing (previously unknown to me) and is very similar to the Grolier information cards of the late 70's. It's always a very pleasant surprise to get an item I didn't know existed before. When Randy emailed me with a description I thought I might have already had it since I do have a number of similar cards. But when he sent the scan, it was similar in appearance but not in content, so I just had to have it. Randy was kind enough to oblige. Thanks so much Randy. OBC is the greatest, Lynn

Bob Reed, on the other hand, finds his great wealth in 1989 Gary Thurmans

BOB REED, who sent the Thurman Express down south, and included two well-loved
and appreciated 1952 Topps cards of Myron "Joe" Ginsberg and Paul LaPalme.

DAN ANGLAND, who sent a nice SCP from 1961 Topps, of Frank Lary the Yankee Killer.
Great add to the set, Dan, and the want list is now under 120 on that

Thanks to you both!

Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Gary Thurman update

Recently I mentioned that I purchased some newer cards of which included 1,512
1989 Gary Thurman cards. Well, I decided to share the "wealth" so 93of
you will be receiving your very own Gary Thurman card. Of course Gary won't
be alone as he'll be traveling with 640 of his cardboard buddies.

Some of you won't receive a Thurman card because of various reasons:

Too tough of a list: Hattox, Keating, Morgan, and Morganti

Wantlist at least 1 year old: Cipra, Cooper, Glickman, Knowles, Moore, Newcomb,
Okamuro, Purdham, Robinson, Skoglund, Stahlman, Wainwright, Wiehe, Wolf,
and Zurawski.

Broken link: Atnip, Dejong, Domino, Mura, Stufflestreet, Summers, and Thomas.

So since I still have 1419 cards left if any of the people mentioned above
would like to receive your very own Gary Thurman card (and others) pleasedirect
me to a updated wantlist (that I can hit). Ken: Aren't you workingon
9 copies of a newer set?

The rest of you, keep on eye on your mailboxes.

What a great way to end the week. Three envelopes were in the mailbox bothon
Friday and Saturday. Thanks to the following:

PETER MEAD sends over a great three pack. He hits my 1953 Redman set - I can't
even remember the last time that set was hit. Peter sends over Wes Westrum.
He also adds in a 1952 Topps Mickey Grasso, and he takes one of my 1978
project. 78 rookie shortstops - featuring Mickey Klutts. These are great
hits Peter! Thanks for the odds and ends.

LYNN MILLER sends over two hits to my 1980 Kelloggs set - Foster and Winfield.
Lynn adds three hits to my 75 mini set, one of which pictures a sweet aphro
puffing out of Oscar Gambles hat. A 61 Fleer Bresnahan and a neatly trimmed
52 topps of Bob Kuzava. The trim job leaves Kuzava somewhere between
the regular sized card and a 75 mini. Lynn, I can use every one of theseguys.
 Thank You!

ANDY COOK sends over a waiver wire claim in the form of a 1978 Kelloggs Ellis
Valentine. Andy "finds" a friend to go with - a 52 Topps Howie Fox. Andy,
thanks for the waiver and the 52 Fox. These are great additions!

Switching gears for a bit to talk football, CHUCK PARIS provides me with the
highlight of the 2009 Chicago Bears season. Chuck and I wagered a few cards
on the Bears Lions game. The Bears covered, and Chuck sends over a three
pack from the Bowman set, one being a high number. Chuck, I didn't think
you forgot. I was the one who forgot. What a great surprise! Thanks toyou,
the Lions and the Bears.

FRANK THOMAS sent a nice letter saying hello and listing some uv needs. I will
be forwarding the wants on to Mark Talbot and he can post them on his site.

Finally, BOB REED hits me with one of his Thurman's. To go along for the ride,
he includes a hit to my 1960 football set - Ray Krouse. He also sendsover
a dozen hits to my 1978 project - four of which were page killers. Bob,
thank you for sharing a bit of your Thurman find with me and for including
some hits to my lists. Thanks!

Gents, you guys have made for a great Saturday night. Thanks to everyone for
their generosity.

Lynn Miller sent 8 cards from 1966. 18 cards from 1967 including one time Giant
Ruben Gomez. And then 15 cards for the 1968 set bringing it close to50
percent complete. Among the 68s was a sharp Rocky Colivito card duringthe
worst trade rambling debate. He also sent another card that had no date
but it looks like I cannot mention it here. Thanks Lynn

Father Pat Wattigny sent 3 1965s, one of them is Hoyt Wilhelm showing his pitching
grip. A couple of 1961 and one of them was Earl Averill. That was fun
to get. A 1953 and a 1951 Bowman. Thanks for the cards and thanks for the
note Father Pat.

Andy Cook gave me a 1956 Elmer Valo from his recent waiver wire. I sure appreciate
it. When I first heard of baseball when I was young, I heard of him.
Not sure why I did but it was great to get this card.
Thanks Andy

And today
Dan Angland completely changed the day. I was supposed to be remodeling thelaudry
room and other endevours. First, 7 cards from 1961. 7 cards form 1960
and 6 from 1974 including Gaylord Perry Bobby Bonds.
So here is the deal.... A 1960 card of Orioles Jackie Brandt. But he is wearing
a Giants hat. I thought I had just about every Topps Giants card andnow
Dan and this Jackie Brandt guy give me something to think about. I spent
the day trying to figure out how many other cards have players with teams
that do not match there hat. This seemed more important than remodeling.
These are great Dan. Thanks. A nice surprise

Have a fun football day guys

Thanks this week goes to BOB REED who didn't miss my mailbox with the ever
forementioned Thurman card. Yes i was one of Bob's 1,512 friends who
received that card along with 5 1972 Topps football. Names like Gabriel,
Vataha, Sanders, Podalak and Lee. The Lee cards reminds of one of Bobby starts
for the Vikings when it was a question who was going to start a particular
game and Bud Grant chose Lee. One of the signs in the stadium read The
Civil War is over Grant goes with Lee.

PETER MEAD continues his assault on my 1962 Post football set with a SCP
of Jim Johnson.

Thank you gentleman for the nice cards on what has turned out to be a icy
day to stay inside and look at them.

PS While i am and will also remain a diehard BEARS fan Go Vikes. With
them winning the Super Bowl and Favre retiring once again. Tavaris Jackson
will then be the starter unless Sage Rosenbloom unseats him. Either way I
think the Bears move up in the standings

Bob also did some other damage to wantlists I'm focused on slightly more than
my '89 Topps. He took a shot at my 2010 target list and bumped off #187from
the 54 Bowmans, Vern Law. Fifty-three and counting on my 54s! Then Bob
followed that up with a sweet '69 Al Kaline. Nice!

Thanks, Bob. I really appreciate being included in the hit parade. And much

You all know my love of the Post Cereal sets--there were two future Bills in the 1962 Post Canadian Football League set--Ernie Warlick (whom I have) and Cookie Gilchrist (whom I will eventually lasso). Always looking for mid-1960s AFL era Bills from matchbooks, to Super Duper give aways, to coke caps. Thanks Don, Ant and all of OBC-- Peter Mead ================= Date: Tue, 26 Jan 2010 06:30:18 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "JamesW" Subject: A Perfect 10... Hi all -- Last weekend, my family and I went down to Kansas City and spent a night atGreat Wolf Lodge. While it was neat and the kids had a blast, I enjoyed Sunday even more; we went over to the Negro League Hall of Fame. It's been about 8 years since my last visit and it just keeps getting better and better. The trip back to Omaha got a bit hairy, with stiff winds and icy roads stretching the normal 3 hour drive to a little more than 5 hours. Listening to my Vikings made it seem like 50... oh well! At any rate, when we got home(around midnight) I found a stack of mail on the table that my son had retrieved just before we took off on Saturday. I had asked him if there was anything important in it and he had said "No", which, in retrospect, is the wrong question to ask an 11 year old who is still waiting on b'day cards from his uncles! While *he* may not have had any cool mail, *I* did... andI didn't wait until the morning to open it! Bob D'Angelo starts off my 2010 collecting year with a perfect 10 pack of cards minted 50 years ago (geez, that seems impossible!). Ironically, right on top was Ray Herbert of the Kansas City Athletics, followed by Bob Grim... also of the KC A's! I *love* the first of the "Seasons Highlights" listed on the back of the card forGrim "Apr. 15: Long considered one of the weakest hitter in the game, Bob amazedeveryone--himself included--by blasting a grand slam homer to beat the White Sox 10-8." Now ok, Grim *was* a pitcher, but the utter disrespect for his hitting was hilarious. LONG considered?? "One of the weakest hitter" --> note the singular "hitter"... I wonder if it was originally "THE weakest hitter"?? "Amazed everyone--himself included"?? Wow... so many insults dished out with such an economy of words! They just don't write like that anymore. To topit off, the cartoon picture of Grim had been peeled off, replaced with a stick-figure-ish amateur rendering. What an awesome card! Oh yeah... there were eight other terrific cards in the batch, too, including Harry "Suitcase" Simpson, Phillies manager Eddie Sawyer, and three SportMagazine 1960 Rookie Star cards -- Jim Proctor, Bob Will, and Chicago Catcher Camilo Carreon. Rounding out the package were Ernie Johnson of the Indians, the Nat's Ken Aspromonte, and Cubs Catcher Sammy Taylor. Cards were accompanied with a nice note by Bob encouraging me to enjoy collecting in 2010. With a start like that, I'm certain I will. Thanks a million, Bob... anda belated Happy New Year! Take care and have a wonderful week... ================= To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Tue, 26 Jan 2010 06:32:00 -0500 From: Jimmy Parker Subject: Thurman hits SC Thanks out to Bob Reed, who continues his Gary Thurman-led assault on OBC.
