My Tuesday morning trek to work was particularly unpleasant today. We're getting hit with some fairly heavy rain and windat the moment. I battled with my umbrella throughout the quarter mile walk to the bus stop, then sat through a journey which - due to the conditions and traffic volume - took twice as long as usual. One hour later, I finally arrived at work. I poured myself a coffee and went along to the mailroom to check my box. It always brightens my day to find either an OBC or an ebay package among my usual "official" stuff, and today brought one of each. First off was an 8x10 envelope from Bill Ashton, which along with a number of cards which merit a mention elsewhere included a very unusual item. A series of 23 pages liberated from a baseball guide of some description, each page featuring a Detroit Tigers player. Judging by the playing records on each page, the guide is from 1933. Each page features a small portrait, the players personal details, his playing record, and a biography. Among the Tigers featured are guys like Bucky Harris, Ray Hayworth, Marv Owen, Billy Rogell, Gee Walker, Tommy Bridges, Ty Cobb, and rookies Schoolboy Rowe and Hank Greenberg. Just to give you an indication of how times have changed, thepersonal details of each player actually includes their FULL home addresses!! This is truly an amazing addition to my Tigers collection. Thanks so much, Bill !!!! The second envelope was also an 8x10 size, this one from an ebay dealer whomay have slightly over done the packaging. Contained inside were 2 cards. Yep, 2 (count 'em!). A pair of 1966/67 Red Wings - Roger Crozier and Henry Bassen, the final 2 that I needed for that team set. Nice cards though theyare, I'm not entirely sure they merited a whole 8x10 cardboard envelope tothemselves. Oh well. Anyway, once again a big thank you out to Bill for his wonderful contribution!! He most certainly owes me nothing and has not ever as far as I can remember. Two envelopes arrived recently, and I need to take a moment to thank the senders. First, LYNN MILLER sends three hits he remembered were on my old UV wantlist, but asked why he couldn't find the list online (to answer, Yahoo killed my old site and I didn't have it backed up...and I haven't gotten to the point of pulling out all the boxes from the closet to build a new list. My pre-'81 stuff is all in binders right next to my computer and were much easier to build). The second package was not for me but for my daughter...Melissa began building a set of 1971 Topps coins at this year's National when OBC-friendly dealers Wayne Johnson and J.D. Heckathorn gave her (yes, gave her) a bag full of them. Before leaving Cleveland, Melissa picked up a few more '71 coins at dealer tables and also from fellow OBC members at the swap. Today, BROCK HATTOX sends along 48 coins for Melissa's quest! Great coins too...Seaver, Frank Robby, McCovey and Lee May (who Melissa met at the National) were among the hits to Melissa's list. BTW...Melissa's 1971 Topps coin wantlist stands at only 35 coins. While a few biggies are left (like Mays and Clemente) there are still some commons to be picked up. If anybody wishes to strike the list, just send me an emailand I'll send her wantlist your way. Ray? Jim? I cannot express the pleasure and joy I felt sharing that day with you and our other VCT and TB friends. I still remember the expressions of the wait staff at the restaurant when we asked for a table for 20, in a joint that was probably already double packed, yet somehow they pulled itoff for us. The Rockies ball game we watched was played in not only the worst weather I've experienced in ALL my years of baseball, but it was also one of the worst daze of weather in the "front range" I've experienced since I moved to Colorado, nearly fifteen years ago. One very incredible, unique experience, that I'm sure will never be duplicated.
