I was able to make a whirlwind trip to the National on Saturday, when it turned out my services were not required that day for my office relocation.

I spent a lot more time looking than I did buying - but when I was buying, it seemed like I was purchasing more games and toys than I did cards. And, when I got home and thought about it, I should have bought more of the games, because some were underpriced. I guess the biggest difference from prior Nationals in Cleveland was that there were a few less tables, but a much higher percentage of the tables were vintage. Unfortunately, many of them were far beyond my OBC budget.

I did do some damage to the 55 Bowman football set, and picked up some other odds and ends. And, amazingly, given the fact that I gave them about 12 minutes notice of my attendance, Larry Gersbach and Mark Talbot both arrived with envelopes with my name on them - both with hits to my highest priority set, the 56 Topps.

I was sorry I was unable to attend the swap, but I came with another non-OBC person, and he did not want to stay.

As always, it was a pleasure to meet several OBC members. I searched for Arbeeny and Dingman, but never made contact - maybe next time.

While it was rushed, still a good time.

MAC WUBBEN - Mac hands me an envelope with a pair of '53 Topps, plus a '64 Topps
Yaz. Wow!
LARRY GERSBACH - One Redleg fan hits another; Gersh hands me an envelope with
a 52 Bowman Roy McMillan. Love them Reds, Gersh!
RICHARD DINGMAN hits me with a pair or 53 Topps. Thanks!
JOHN LeROUX hands me a flat with a DCP of verrrry nice '66's. Thanks for hitting
a hard-to-hit set!
MIKE RICH includes a 56 Topps back variation plus a '55 Bowman umpire card.Much
appreicated, Mike!
STEVE RITTENBERG knocks off the '58 Topps Colavito from my list. Thank you,Steve!
MARK TALBOT gave me 4 unmentionables, plus 5 72/73 Topps hockey. Thanks Mark!
JOHN SCOTT GRAY gave me a flat with a much-needed 58 Topps Killebrew!
VCT's RON HOHNE joined us for the swap, & gave me a bunch of shiny stuff.

Pretty cool hits - and that was all BEFORE the swap. So, nowe it's time to say
thanks to the following guys who allowed me to rifle through their dupes
GIOIA - a '52 Bowman. I picked up quite a few of those this year, & this one
is very appreciated;
REED - Bob kindly lets me pick a pair of 52 Bowman, plus a bunch of '53 Topps
- and gave me my very first 63 Salada coin;
TALBOT - about 10 Fleer oddballs from the '70's;
GLIDDEN - Spike had a pile of cards, which he was nice enough to not only sort
by year, but also put in numerical order. Thanks to Spike I was able tocross
off several numbers from 52T, 56T, 53T, 54B, & 62 Post. Wow!
RITTENBERG - A pair of 60T, 5 72/73 hockey, plus a sharp-cornered 67T high number;
GERSH - 4 '60 Leaf, a 63 Fleer, a pair of '53 Bowman, a 54 Bowman, & a 62 Post;
STUFFLESTREET - a pair of '53 Topps;
GRAY - a plethora of cards from JSG's dupes box included a 50 Bowman Rizzuto,
some 62 Post, 3 52 Topps, plus my very first Bell Brand Dodgers - and wouldn't
you know it, he gave me TWO - so now I'm collecting the set, per OBC"Rich's
GOTO - quite a few hits from the 50's Topps & Bowman sets, and 4 '74 Fleer.

I certainly got way more than I gave in the swap - and for that I promise to
get a better-stocked dupes box for next year. To the above-named gentlemen
- thanks for the cards, and most of all thanks for your company at the show
& the swap!

Hello All,

The National is always a great time to catch up with
fellow collectors. Whenever a grouping of OBC takes place it is automatic
that cardboard will be flying around. This event was no different
so all ow me to thank:

Anthony Arbeeny found an error/variation card that I was not aware of at the
show and handed it over to m at the swap. The `87 Topps set has many
such variations but the WS card with the line near the number was on I had
not seen before and now I have it thanks to Ant-man =E2=93 Thanks buddy!!!

Richard Dingman convinces me that I must start a new Non-Sport set and slips
me 22 Red Man American Indian Chief prints. I have always admired the
art work on these and now with over half the set I have no reason not to
collect it. Thanks so much Richard!!!

Larry Gersbach was kind enough to hand over a `34 Goudey card of Oscar Melillo,
one very nice SCP. Thanks also for the stories and picher of beer
after the b all game, great to spend some time with you!!!

Spike Glidden handed over a 60 Nu-card Hi-Lite card of =E2=9CScooter=E2=9D
Rizzuto at the swap to knock off another from this set. Way to
go Spike!!!

Kent Goto brought a very nice dupe box to the swap and I grabbed up some `64
Topps Giants and some assorted Yaz cards for my =E2=9Cspecial=E2=9Dplayers
collection. There were not too many dupe boxes with anything
of great interest for me until I stumbled on to Kent =E2=99s box very late
into the swap. Thanks for the items I selected Kent !!!

John Scott Gray hands over an envelope with a SCP from the `50 Bowman set enclosed
and delights me with a Roy Campanella card. I picked up a lot
of `50 Bowman=E2=99s at the show over the weekend but not the Campy =E2=93
Thanks to JSG!!!

Tom Housley brought me a couple Dayton Dragons skeds for that yet unorganized
portion of my collection. Always great to see you Tom!!!

John McLaughlin and his wife showed us some wonderful hospitality and shared
with us a very tasty lunch and treated us to Toledo Mud-hens game tickets.
John and his wife have a very cozy home just 5 miles from the b all
park and it was a great stopping point and final activity on our trip.

Peter Mead who has been trading cardboard with me for a very long time spent
some of his short time jaw-boning with me at the National and at the swaphanded
me a very unusual `59 Topps Venezuelan card of TIGER Lou Berberet.
This is the first card of this set that I have ever seen. As usual
Peter I=E2=99m very impressed =E2=93 Thanks!!!

Ron Perry was my driver the entire weekend and put up with my constant banter.
It=E2=99s always great to spend some time with Ron who has such
great stories to share. I truly enjoyed our time together =E2=93
Thanks friend!!!

The ever generous Mike Rich slipped me an envelope containing a couple skeds
and a `63 Jello SP (Willie Davis) and half of a `55 Redman Yogi Berra card.
 Thanks so much Mike!!!

Steve Rittenburg all ows me to grab up a huge stack of late `60=E2=99s OPC
Hockey cards and then works out a =E2=9Csealer scum=E2=9D deal with
me to procure about 20 star cards from these sets including Gordie Howe, Bobby
Orr, Phil Espisito and checklist cards. I also found a `71 Kelloggs
card that I needed in his dupes. Thanks for the cards but moreimportantly
it was great to see the =E2=9CKing of the National=E2=9Dagain.

Mac Wubben contributes another `34-36 Diamond Star to my collection by handing
over a Heinie Manush card. Yet another HOF=E2=99er to cross off
the list thanks to Mac!!!

I didn=E2=99t get a chance to look at as many dupe
boxes at the swap as I should have; I was to busy chewing the fat with most
of the attendees. I hope I didn=E2=99t miss acknowledging anyone=E2=99s
kindness but if I did please give me a gentle reminder so that
I can properly thank you. Thanks again =E2=93 BE WELL!!!

For those who were at the swap do not feel offended if I did not go through
your dup boxes after going through bins, boxes and binders for three solid
days enough is enough. Unfortunately I did not close any of my sets this
year but made some a lot closer. I guess my best find was the 49 various
years of Redman Tobacco cards that I picked up at Roger Neufeld's table thanks
to Steve Rittenberg on that find. There were HOFers and even some still
had the  tabs on them.
Here's my thanks segment for the cards I received at the National:

box of cards which were of the non-sports type.
Mark Talbot - handed me 71 Topps Story Booklets #2,3,4,9,11,12,16, and 23
Mac Wubben - handed me three T206s of Alperman, Clark, and Donovan

My apologies to those in attendance--my dup box is in MD and I'm not, so I was relatively empty-handed in my short sojourn to Cleveland.  But I was presented with several cards by the brethern:
JSG stunned me as well with a 1950 Bowman Scooter Rizzuto--the year he won the AL MV opposite my HOMer Jim Konstanty in the NL.
Mark Talbot also hits the 1950 Bowman list with a head shot an SCP of Preacher Roe.
Mac Wubban floors me with a four banger from the 49 Bowman set highlighted by a Bob Porterfield, and
Ron Perry tosses a show pickup to me in the form of a 62 Jello Jim Brosnan.
Many thanks guys--they are greatly appreciated.

I guess you could say I live on the "Foot path" since Mark T, Ron P and Mike M stopped for a visit on the way home from Cleveland. We took in a Toledo Mud Hen game and had a chance to do a little visiting for awhile before the trio headed North on the final leg of their trip home. It was a great time, plus Mark slipped me eight 1959 OBC special Topps cards. Thanks Mark, and thanks to the three of you guys for stopping off and spending a few hours. The other Mike, Mike Rich had to hang around Cleveland on work related issues and didn't head back home until Tuesday. Following the same path, Mike also stopped for a visit on the way home, and I got to see some of the goodies he managed to acquire over the weekend. Very impressive, Mike had some stuff I never knew existed. Mike was kind enough to think about me and pick up something for my HOM collection... a beautiful PAPA GINO'S 1978 Collector's Series disk of Mark Fidrych. Thanks Mike. It also helps with spelling everyone's name right. If I have forgotten anyone, my apologies. Anthony Arbeenyallowed me to pick five great 1951 Bowman baseball. I remember telling Ant that I once bought several hundred 1951 Bowmans and all were under number 100. It was good to meet you for the first time and I do occasionally stay at a Hyatt during my travels and have enjoyed all my stays. Larry Gersbach was kind enough to contribute another 1951 Bowman. Thanks for staying for the whole Tigers game on Friday night. Spike Glidden contributed a 1961 Post Cereal company version. I'm hoarding these and when I get 30-40 I'll list. Kent Goto allowed me to claim a bunch of 70's Fleer's from all those sets like "Rainy Days and Monday Plays" or whatever they are called. I also bought a handful of 1950 Bowman so I can start the set. Rob Gioia helped split a bunch of 50's cards and a 53 Berra from Wayne Johnson. I think we made a good deal that was "good from far and way better than far from good". I think Rob won the OBC all you can eat hot dog contest at Friday nightr's game. It was good to meet you. I hope to see you at OBC gatherings in the future. Peter Mead I was actually able to hit Peter's list with a 1962 Post Cereal that I fished out of a junk box. Mark Talbotarranged the room, that more than met expectations, and put up with me for the entire weekend. Mark has a lot of great stories about traveling the country with the band. I think Mark has been in more out of the way places than I have. Mike Rich slipped me an envelope containing several 1974 OPC Baseball. I was able to hit Mike's list with another 1962 Jello. I also have someting called a Sports King Gum that Mike has an interest in and I found a Wiffle Ball box (rare softball version) with five Wiffle Ball cards that Mike might also have an interest in. Steve Rittenburg allowed me to pick a few 1955 Topps All Americans and some other cards including more 70's Fleers. John Scott Gray hands over an envelope with a few 1954 Bowmans and I also found a few 70's Hostess from his dupes box. Tom Housley brought me a 70's basketball another Fleer and a real nice 1971 Tom Mack for one of the few real nice sets that I am building. John McLaughlin and his wife showed us some wonderful hospitality and shared with us a very tasty lunch and treated us to Toledo Mud-hens game tickets. John and his wife have a very cozy home just 5 miles from the b all park and it was a great stopping point and final activity on our trip. I sure hope I haven't forgotten anyone. I'll now have to update the wantlist and send out cards. ================= Date: Thu, 06 Aug 2009 02:31:19 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "Randy Welk" Subject: I couldn't go to The National thanks to I went to a soccer tournament in Santa Barbara instead and messed up my knee so bad. Its been great but the positions has been empty for the three weeks prior so I have been working 15 hour days trying to get that caught up. So, my arrival in Cleveland started on Friday and I met Kent and JSG at the door and I was there to attempt to bring down the 54 Topps set down to one of the two rookies Aaron or Banks. Plans changed as I was able to buy both of these cards from two different table for $200. So I managed to kill off that set (as Chris Stufflestreet and his wife found the last card for me), as well as a basketball and hockey set. Steve Rittenburg handed me two of the final cards for the hockey set at the swap, and a 1962 Colavito, Kent passed me a nice high number from that set as well. Mac Wubben surprised me with a 1964 Yaz, and Gersh, Spike, Talbot, Mike Rich, and a couple of others were helping me on my 1960 and 1962 set. Of course the swap was exactly what everyone else has posted. Great fun for myself, and really I debated about leaving early but with the long drive, I just had to go. Mark Talbot and I have begun a little tradition of starting new sets, and since my last to him was a german edition soccer set. Mark graciously returned the favor with a 1981 3 on 1 soccer set that I have yet to even identify. It was great to meet Ant, and Rob G and see all of the other members that arrived in I am in temporary living, and do have my cards with me, my family is still at the home address in Wisconsin. Looking back on my Sent Items, it seems that I neglected to post a thank you to Bill for his continued assistance in filling my binders. The latest crop of cards featured items such as my ultra cheap '57T Ted Williams from Mke Wheat, a fairly hefty assortment of UV (mostly Tigers), and a number of upgrades to my early to mid-1960s sets (those last few courtesy of Bill himself). I get a great deal of satisfaction in thanking Bill for his ongoing help, and from hitting his wantlist in order to show my gratitude! Glasgow, Scotland ================= Date: Wed, 12 Aug 2009 01:04:15 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Thanks From: Glenn Codere Subject: Thanks from Glasgow Well, this morning started out with me feeling pretty angry towards "Red Sox Nation". After being plunked in retaliation for the hitting of Miguel Cabrera in the second inning of last night's Boston-Detroit game, the hyper-active Kevin Youkilis decides to charge the mound. Result? Both Youkilis and Tigers starting pitcher Rick Porcello are ejected - Porcello seemingly without a warning. So, the Red Sox lose a position player, but the Tigers (up 3-0 at the time) lose their starter. Not exactly a fair trade off considering Youkilis was the aggressor. Bad umpiring decision, but one that was brought about by Youkilis seeing the red mist. Youkilis' replacement - Mike Lowell - goes on to hit 2 HR's, while the Tigers long-reliever Chris Lambert gets tattooed. Final score: Red Sox (or should that be UMPIRES) 7, Tigers 5. Aaaarrrggghhh...... Well, my anger towards all things Red Sox soon abated when I checked my mailbox and found a small box from one of OBCs resident Red Sox nuts, good ol'TJ Valacak. And I can happily say that TJ attacked my wantlists with more gusto than an angry Youk! Major damage was done to a number of sets, including 10 1959Ts, 2 1958Ts, a pair of neatly trimmed 1957Ts, and 5 1969T FB (incl John Unitas!). There were also several of that other type of card whichwill be detailed on a different server. Earl had a little trouble accepting the rule that catching the ball on 1 bounce is an out. Balls and Strikes are only called if the hurler was not coming close to the plate or the striker (batter) was not swinging. Lots of terminology to lean, but as a veteran of these games, I knew almost all of them. The 1 term we were completely unfamiliar with is what a deepfly to the outfield was called. They informed us it was a Howitzer. We thought that was a WWII term, but then thought maybe the WWII gun was named after an old term. When we were in Colorado we too Junior baseball took the covering off and restitched them into old skin. It a cost saving way of doing things as the old baseball became lopsided after a few whacks. I still play the game when i can out run injuries. I have broken my nose in Milwaukee and just last August 5 tore my Achilles tendon so again my season was cut short. Along with assorted spraains and pulled thigh muscles who says you have to be in shape to play MIke went through a few rules. but a few he didn't mention is you cant advance on a catch in the air but you can on one bounce. no free backs so if a ball is hit foul if a fielder can get the ball back to the pitcher and pitcher returns to base before you get back --your out. And my favorite is last one to make an out the next batter is up next inning. So if there is a runner on first with two outs and you force the runner out at second----you get to start next inning. Even in slow motion, replay after replay, you could see Nikky winding up and firing from the blue line, but no matter what angle they showed, you could simply NOT see that puck going in! Just the red light going on and the players raising their arms in celebration. It was then that I knew I would not like to be an opposing net-minder when Lidstrom was on the ice. Can't stop what you can't see. "... ... The 1 term we were completely unfamiliar with is what a deepfly tothe outfield was called. They informed us it was a Howitzer. We thought that was a WWII term, but then thought! maybe the WWII gun was named after anold term. ... ..." Oh, and to follow up on Mark's FOOT follow up: Sir Talbot, I understand the man had his share of problems over the years, but if you don't learn to spell Denny McLain's name correctly, especially when you have one of his cards sitting right in front of you from a recent arrival, I might have to consult the FOOT powers to be and ask to have you placed on suspension. Of course, at which time I'll immediately petition to fill the temporary vacancy. This year has been especially difficult in California for teachers. My supply budget was cut by 66% this year (after being cut by 25% the previous year). Joel was extremely generous in donating to a great website that I set up last year that allows me to buy classroom supplies and allows others to get a tax write-off. I did not send out the renewals yet this year (unless the site does it automatically) but Joel managed to send something anyway. Joel, thank you so much! You have no idea how important these donations are to the children in my class. If anyone else is interested you can see the site at You can search the site for me using my full name (Joshua Levine) at Castaic Elementary in California. They had added player names to each suite. Suite 211 would be Ty Cobb for example. I was walking with my host to our suite, and was admiring the various greats of BB, all of whom played for the Tigers. Names such as Horton, Cash, Lolich, McLain, Greenberg, Kaline and then I noticed the Jim Nothrup suite. I came to a complete stop, as my host kept on walking. When he noticed I was no longer astride he came back and joined me. The Silver Fox's name is correctly spelled as Jim Northrup. So the plaque outside the suite was missing the first "r". I am rarely invited to a suite, and have yet to be able to locate the appropriate suite to see if it has ever been corrected. I might understand seeing "Nothrup" misspelled on a plaque at a little league field somewhere off M-46 near Breckenridge or St. Louis where he grew up, claiming "Jim Nothrup played here in 1949" or something like that, but NOT in a shiny new, major league ball park.
