Ed takes on killer status with a Tiptonesque 1956 Topps Wings card that COMPLETES my first pre-1960 non-sports set. This set took me almost ten years to complete! Yes! Subject: What holiday treats!

Recently I have had a pick up in the normal couplepackages a month I get.  So
much so, I have received 4 packages in the last week! Today's mail brought
what is believed to be a complete set of 1980 Twins postcards from TJ.  His
wife has Twins and I get a set of Twins. Has to be some sort of symbolism
or joke there.  I cannot find the set in my big SCD, but it is shrink wrapped.
The week started with a package from George Vrechek, primarily of UV Bazooka,
but also an Illinois Lottery Ticket with Billy Williams on it.  I now have
the loser, and need the variations of winning tickets, if anyone wishes to
send one of those along. Especially wanted is any mega millions winner! The
other highlight was a 1980 Burger King Phillie Pete Rose to complete the
set.  That makes 2 sets done this week and both are from 1980.
Rick Lyons sends along a box filled mainly with Stadium cups, especially from
Seattle it looks like.  The best cup was a 1973 Slurpee cup of FOOT fav Hank
Greenberg, getting me within 4 of finishing this set.  Rick also enclosed
a 1962 Topps BB Buck, a 1963 Topps Sticker and a 1974 Topps Deckle Edge,
which is only my 5th of those.  Rare to get those Topps insert hits.
Not to slight the above packages as they are great, but I got a lucky 7 item
package from Mac Wubben that knocked me out.  These were all prewar items.
First up was a B-18 Blanket. A T-205 Ed Walsh, which is one of the top half
dozen cards in the set. A pair of T-206s including Collins and Waddell.The
Waddell has a Sovereign back and fit into the slot next to my original
T-206 Wagner.  For those that know the set, they know I am not joking, for
those that are not as familiar with the set, you will need to look this up
to understand, that I am not lying or making a joke about having an original
T-206 Wagner.  A 1913 Fatima team Card is my 2nd to that set, so I now have
a set to work on to replace the 1980 Burger King Phillies set that wascompleted.
Somehow I think this set will be tougher to complete.  He alsoincluded
my 2nd 1934-6 Diamond Star high number of Van Lingle Mungo.  I now
need about 16 cards for a base set of the Diamond Stars.  Last card was the
one he told me he was sending.  A 1938 Goudey of Tiger HOF #241 Gehringer.
I only need around 55 Goudey cards to complete the base run of 1933-1941,
but 31 are from the 1938 set, so any hit to that set means a lot. All I can
say is WOW!

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are over but it's still hockey season to Mark Talbot.
I few weeks back, I made a waiver wire claim from our Scotish friend of
a 69-70 Bobby Hull, only to find out that mark was much closer to completing
the set than I, so I passed it on to him.  He responded by sending me a69-70
Jean Beliveau, a 70-71 Pit Martin, and a 71-72 Dave Keon, leaving those
sets at 4, 1 and 8 hits respectively.
He also included 5 glossy inserts from 76 & 77, one of which was some guy named
Orr.  Mark's note mentioned easing my pain for passing him the Hull, however,
it was my pleasure and there was no pain involved.  Wow, Mark - I am
deeply indebted.  Thank you!

Life happens to all of us.  This past week it happened to Kim and I.  Her grandfather
was diagnosed with cancer and went directly to hospice care because
it has spread throughout his body.  We drove to Chico, CA to say goodbye
to him, which went as well as such a thing possibly could.  He is an amazing,
godly man--may I be like him when I face my death.

MIKE MROZ hit me on the way out of town with eleven 69s to take a nice chunk
out of the sixties set I'm working hardest on, and made it an even dozen with
a 74 Harmon Killebrew!  That 74 set now stands at 8 TO GO and I'm starting
to scan the horizon for heroes...I know you're out there! ;-) Mike, you
always hit me with the great stars.  Thanks again and again, my friend.  Got
something in the mail for you today.

Then JOHN STAMPER and MIKE RICH greeted my return and brightened my Monday with
two great deliveries.  John shoots down a 52 Topps of Guz Niarhos and two
65 Topps embossed, my favorite insert set, Al Spangler and Jim King, then
Topps it off (I'm really sorry, I'm tired) with a Reggie Jackson Golden Moments,
slightly newer than this list allows but the point is, it's a REGGIE
JACKSON card and John takes me seriously that I take any and all of these--whether
I already have them or not.  Thank you muchly, John!

Finally, in a spurt of spontaneous generosity, MIKE RICH--whose list I havetried
to hit for a long time, with little success (okay, none)--sends a puffy
with twenty-two, count 'em, 22! 1973 TOPPS ALL HIGH NUMBERS!!  Mike, that
was really cool of you and I genuinely appreciate it!  Thanks for including
me in your 73 score.

This time it's a book by Earl Woods, "Training a Tiger", a father's guide to raising a winner in both golf and life.  Mission definitely accomplished.  Just as Mark continues to astound and amaze the OBC group, so does Tiger in the world of golf and life setting an exemplary role model.  Of course Mark included some bookmarks which included cards of Tiger and a few other golfers whom some may have heard of; Palmer, Nicklaus, Miller as well as a few baseball hits to some newer pursuits.  This will be another great read to complement the earlier book he sent about my next favorite golfer, Johnny Miller.  Thank you Mark for your continued generosity to me and the rest of OBC. Received a few packages this week from OBCers, a VCTer and a trader from Canada,
hitting a number of lists.  From OBC was Richard Dingman with 17 1990Target
Dodgers.  Bill Ashton sends along a 1963 Topps hi #, plus 2 1954 Johnston
Cookies, which flips this from a have list to a want list, as I am now
over 1/2 way.  Peter Mead has been after me to  move them to the want list
and now I can.  I have concluded yet another   swap with VCTer Patrick Pritchet,
with some big cards.  This time I got a 1931 W-517 (my 5th), a 1958
Topps Yellow letter Aparicio (leaving me only Clemente and Zimmer to finish
the yellow letters) and a 1935 National Chicle FB high number.  For those
of you that are not aware, the National Chicle FB is my fav set.  I have a
goal of getting at least 1 card a year on this 36 card set.  I am now down
to a bakers dozen (do not want to say I need the unlucky 13), but 9 of them
are high numbers, and another is the Rockne.  The other package contained
more of my favs, Coke FB caps.  All these packages are making the build up
for the National even more exciting for me.

MR. OZ (MIKE MROZ)  helps my 1971 topps football sets with 19  hits.  As a
devoted Bears' fan, I am especially greatful for the Greg  Landry, Alex
Karras, Mike Lucci cards in there:-)   The 11 1974 along  with these are very
nice  Since I got started on the set with a rain damage  set Kurt Tourdot gave
me  I forgot the cards were actually flat at one  time.  This one didn't
otrment me as much as it only had one Lion to  torment me as how bad the Bears
were back then with Ed Flanagan but he makes it  up with Calvin Hill and
Billy Kilmer.  Thanks Mike

BILL ASHTON send me two waiver wire claims I made on him with 4 71 football
with the names Hadl, Maynard, Mack, and Lilly attached to them and a 1962
Jello  (now there is a set I never see anything from  not even ebay) of
Johnny  Podres.  Along for the ride came to 3 upgraded version of 1971 Topps
baseballof Etchebarren, Grant and Astros Rookies, a 73 of one of my closet
HOMy  in Bobby Murcer, 2 76 of Morgan and Fingers, not to be out done a 78 of
Robin  Yount.  Thanks Bill for the lovely cards

back some fond memory as a youth to take my mind off the reality of the

Yesterday, it was my pleasure to meet up with Lynn Miller at our town's quarterly
sportscard show.  Lynn presented me with a stack of cards including (3)
1975 Hostess, (47) 1961 Topps(shame on me for needing that many), (1) 1966
Topps, (1) 1967 Topps, (3) 1969 Topps, (1) 1970 Topps, (2) 1972 Topps (Clemente,
Frank Robinson), (1) 1973 Topps (Nolan Ryan), (2) 1974 Topps (Hank
Aaron), and (1) 1975 Topps (Gary Carter Rookie). Also, 4 newer cards, to be
mentioned elsewhere.

The show was as it always is (small - maybe 3 dealers of interest), but we managed
to bop around for the better part of 2 hours, at which time Lynn came
over to my place for some cardboard chat.  I had a great time, as always.

At th elast minute, I ended up with an extra ticket to the Tigers game yesterday.
Mark Talbot relieved me of this extra baggage.He picked me up, drove

My Vegas pal and I were able to attend the quarterly card show held yesterday at Galleria Mall again.  We've sort of become regulars even though there isn't much representation.  I wouldn't recommend anyone planning a trip just for the occassion.  However we both made some purchases of old and new stuff, limited as it was.  But it seems Rich is bent on getting my 51 Topps Bluebacks done for me.  Another great surprise in presenting me with another one.  He must have really taken my mentoring to heart and started his own printing press.  After the show he invited me back to his place for some refreshments and relaxation before I had to go off to work.  But while at his place he also gave me the CD from his 2009 SCD book that I can now use to locate some items of Hank in the newer listings as well as some of the sets I can't seem to find in my own Beckett.  Another great afternoon with a friend and cards.  Doesn't get any better, thanks Rich.

The cardboard hits keep rolling into Southeastern Michigan
and the list slowly but surely shrink.  Early last week I had
caught up with all my trading but now you can see that a number of fine traders

to produce a 1923 W-515 strip card of Tom Griffith giving me (2) of those
so you know what that means, another set added to the want list.  Also
along for the ride were a number of cards that look like 1960 Topps cards
but they are not and will be described elsewhere.  Thanks Bill forincluding
me in your recent mailings!!!

From across the pond Glenn Codere sends a large group of TIGER cards to be described
elsewhere.  Thanks for the Hometown Heroes Glenn!!!

Bob D=E2=99Angelo send (3) cards that look like `60 Topps but they are not
=E2=93 described elsewhere.  Thanks a lot Bob!!!

From OPC-Central, our Canadian offshoot Randy Pin and I worked out a deal that
arrived today and netted me (7) `71 OPC=E2=99s, (3) `72 OPC=E2=99s
and (3) `74 OPC=E2=99s.  The cards included Alston, Torre, Aparico,
Sparky Anderson x2 and the Buckner RC.  It took us a while to work
out the details but in the end it was a trade that helped us both and showed
that Randy=E2=99s one of the =E2=9Cgood guys=E2=9D =E2=93 Thanks

Mike Rich c all ed me at the last minute on Sunday and offered me a set at the
final TIGER game before the ALL-STAR break.  The game was a homerfest
resulting in a 10 -1 victory over the division rival Indians.  Prior
to the game Mike slipped me a `67 Philly FB card of Dan Reeves to upgrade
the one I have, an `83 Michigan Wolverine sked, and (3) `72 Kellogg=E2=99s
variations (Davis, Palmer & Bando) to bring me a bit closer on thatset.
Thanks my good friend for the tic=E2=99s, cards and your company
at the game.

I will spending a little time in the coming days to
get items out in return to these traders and will do my best to get some additional
packages out to initiate some more trading.  I=E2=99m looking
forward to the National this year and hope to see some of you there.

Lynn sent a SCP from the `47-`66 Exhibit set with a postcard of Billy Williams.
Along with a nice note and business card that advertises Lynn's vending
machine business. Thanks buddy!!!

Mac sends a "dealer scum" package that included (7) hits to the `34-36 Diamond
Star set which prompted me to create a Want List from a "have" list.
Now I realize that there are specific variations that distinguish between
the three years of distribution so Mac's (7) cards resulted in my ADDING30+
cards to the want list. So Thanks Mac (I think) I am well on my way
with this set.

Hello All,

The summer keeps rolling along and Wyatt the postal
carrier has been a busy guy delivering all the stuff you guys have been sending
to SE Michigan .  Allow me to thank:

Ken Pillion finds one of the few low numbered `51 Bowman cards that I stillneed
Monte Irwin and sends it my way.  This set is getting closer and
closer and with hits like this I will get it to the Mantle and Mays that have
so many others scratching their heads over this set.

Don Rice finds a short stack of `47-`66 Exhibit cards to add to my collection;
Bruce Edwards, Ferris Fain, Del Rice, Dick Sisler and Gus Zernial are all
welcomed to their new home on Chatsworth.  To round out the package
Don includes a 1980 H all of Fame Exhibit of Vernon Gomez.  Great stuff

T.J. Valacak connects with some shiny stuff and although it is frowned uponto
elaborate on such generosity it is still greatly appreciated.  Thanks

news is that my return was brightened up considerably when I found a number

Mike Mroz - A wonderful mixed bag from Mike, which includes a 61F Joe Medwick,
a pair of 57Ts including "The Pontiff Of Lake Erie" Dave Pope, a trio of
1959Ts, and 3 mid '70s Detroit Lions cards.

Mark Talbot - Mark contributes a 1970 Don Maynard and a trio of 1972Ts to the
football collection, along with a 2009 Tigers sked.

Randy Welk - Randy also does some FB damage with a 1970, a 1972, and (for the
Lions collection) a 1974 Greg Landry. Not content with that, he also includes
a 1959 Johnny Klippstein.

Bill Ashton - Bill sends along another box packed full of my recent auctionwins
and other purchases. Included in the box were a smattering of items directly
from Bill himself, and what items they are!! A '65T Drysdale, 64T Robin
Roberts, 5 beautiful 57Ts including Dusty Rhodes and Bob Lemon, 1959TsHoyt
Wilhelm, Gil Hodges, and a Del Crandall AS, and to top it all off - a1969T
FB Broadway Joe Namath. Wow!! Incidentally, inaddition to numerous
UV Tigers and 2009 Topps Heritage cards the box also contained my recently
purchased 1959T Mickey Mantle AS.

I'm not sure if there is a good way to return to work after a vacation, butthis

Sadly, in the last 9 months the whims of an infant, an increased
workload in the office and a wife who's going for her LPN license
have all conspired to allow me precious little time for cards. I'd
get an OBC package and set it aside, hoping to have time later and,
inevitably something would come up. "Suddenly", you turn around and
your baby daughter is crawling, calling you "da-da" and you've got a

sincerest apologies, time has a way of slipping away and all too

Hi gang,
I almost forgot what it was like to get cards in the mail. John  Stamper
reminds me how cool it is to be in OBC by sending a couple hits to my  1979
Kellogg's variation list. My theory (among many far fetched theories I
have) is that these cards were originally packaged in the cereal boxes, while
95% of the cards you see at shows came from the mail-in factory sets, thereby
making the cards with the variations I'm looking for exceedingly difficult
to  track down. Either that or I'm not looking hard enough or I have pretty
bad luck  finding them. In any case, these two are really appreciated.

Thanks go out this morning to John Stamper who knocks a trio of 1961F Baseball Greats and 5 mid-1970's Detroit Lions cards off my list.

In addition to the cards from John, I also received 2 large packets of cards from Bill Ashton - my most recent purchases from a selection of dealers. The vast majority of these were Tigers cards of the UV variety, but also included my '57 Ted Williams, a '58 Spahn AS, '58 Brooks, '61 Clemente (amazing card...described and priced as "GOOD" but only shows two very slight indentations on the card surface which don't even break the paper), '61 Mantle 565'HR, and a '62 hi#.

All in all, an amazing day for my card collection!!!

Wow!! What an envelope from Hamilton Ontario today. Gord Ellis sends me a 63 Fleer of Al Jackson and FIVE 1953 Johnston Cookie cards--cutting my wantlist in half for that set. Included was none other than old evil-eye Bob Buhl! Strange, I get an envelope from Hamilton a few days after driving right by there on the QEW on my way back from Port Elgin to North Carolina. Hi, Team OBC.  It's been a long flurry of activity hereabouts, so much so that
I'm stopping to send this email on the way home from "work" because I suspect
I'm going to be too wiped out--again--by the time I get off "work" tonight.

Three packages have found their way to Central Washington (state!) in the past
couple weeks.  My wantlist isn't even up-to-date yet, but enough is enough!
First, my friend and our newest Newbie (says the old-timer) RANDY WELK hitsback
on 6 sets ranging from 1961-1975.  Sweet!  Represented were Topps 1961
(2), 1964, 1968 (2 medium high numbers), 1969 (high number), 1970(2) and 1975.
Randy, great spread!  Thanks, man.  Glad to hear you're keeping up with
the whirlwind; remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Next, Steady ED SCHOTT continues his steady stream of waiver-wire generosity,
knocking 9 off my 1960 list.  That was a big chunk for that underfed group,
Ed!  Thank you very much, and I will keep your 65 Quest in heart and mind
and mail.

Finally, KEN MORGANTI...Man!  Since I'm not really a bona fide old-timer, Iget
the pleasure of meeting returning greats for the first time.  Ken sends
me a new OBC baseball cap, which you can't buy on ebay or anywhere else--ya
gotta be a member!  Thank you, Ken, I do feel more official now.  Along with
the cap, Ken sends an SCP that took down one of my Top Five...1954 Bowman
#132, BOBBY FELLER!!!  Ken, Bob was one of my late dad's heroes, and holding
this card in my hands gave me a great memory of hearing Dad's Feller stories.
That was a top-fiver AND a big hit to my favorite 50s set!  Now Iget
to redo that part of the list, too.  ;-)

T.J. Valacak connects with a SCP from the `68-69 OPC Hockey set with Minnesota

Mark Zentkovich found a few `80-81 Topps Basketb all =E2=9Csingles=E2=9D
to slip my way, just Doug Collins and Larry Bird.  To share the ride
Mark includes a neat =E2=9Cpin-up=E2=9D of the Bullets and an unusual
Nabisco Canadian issue of Bill Stoneman that I have never seen before.

TJ Valacak hits my mailbox today with a 1952 gem of Red Sox pitcher Randy Gumpert!
He's smiling on the card, so it must have been taken before he gave
up a gopher ball to the Yankees newest switch-hitter in 1951. Some kid
from Oklahoma who was wearing #6 on May 1st of that year hit his first of
536 home runs off of Gumpert. I'm sure Gumpert was in good company with
all those other guys...

John sends over a '53 Topps Pete Runnels that may now be the best-conditioned
of any 1950's card in my binders (it's easily the best '53 Topps in the book).
Wow, it has corners and everything. I thought the set was beautifulgiven

this is truly a work of art.  Along with Pete's polished paperboard placard
(say that 10 times fast!!) is a cartoon clipping that outlines Pete's career.

Hello All,

Well I just got off the last of my "catch-up" packages
into the mail prior to heading off to Cleveland and today I received asplendid
package from Rick Johnson. Inside were (3) cards I now willnot
have to look for at the National because Rick sent (2) `50 Bowman LO numbered
cards (Ennis & Sievers) and a `53 Topps HI number (Roy Face).As
a result of Rick's generosity I did some updating of the want list and found
that not counting the `49 Bowman set I am down to (88) cards for the `48
- `55 Bowman run. I never would have guessed a number of years ago
that these sets would be so close to completion; of course the Mantle RC,Mays
RCand other HI value cards will eventually thwart the completion
but it's good to see the steady progress on these sets over the years.

of Colts guard Robert Pratt. Interesting back info, with Pratt having five

from the pack! Nice looking cards Ken!

Jeffrey Whitworth sent along a great mix of 07 Goudey hits as well as a wonderful

Subject: A Cook doing a superhero imitation

I received 2 packages today.  The first one was from Andy Cook.  A SCP, butI
did not yet know that, as the internal wrapping said "BAM!"  What an UNDERSTATEMENT!
BLAM!, POW!, BAM!  Inside was a 1952 Topps BB #314.  Also known
as Roy Campanella!  I have been making great strides on the 52 set and Andy
knocks off 1 of the 2 remaining big cards (Reese being the other).  Unbelieveable
to get a RAOK such as that.
The other package was semi-expected, from Gary Mandell, containing 2 more 1952
Topps.  # 67 Allie Reynolds Red back version and then #397, another high
number.  The Reynolds pulls me within 2 of completing the Red Backs. The 2
high numbers, lower it to 15 to complete the base set.  I wonder if I canmake
any more progress at the National.

far and hope to meet several more tomorrow and Sunday.  In addition, I have
met 4 OBC friendly dealers who have kept me very busy with bargain boxhappily
searching until my eyes were blurry.

Today I need to catch up on work, so am taking a day off from the I-X Center,
but am looking forward to going back tomorrow, and to the OBC Swap session.
There is so much to see at the show, it is truly overwhelming.  It takes
several minutes alone to just walk from one end of the center to the other,
and to try to see everything quickly amounts to sensory overload.

Does anybody out there have:
The email listing OBC attendees;
The email listing locations of OBC friendly dealers.

Through a dumb move, I managed to erase all my recent emails. Because of a break in the work action, I will be able to leave Saturday (8:00 a.m.) for a quick trip to the show.

Any help appreciated,
