================= To: OBC Thanks Date: Mon, 1 Jun 2009 14:23:16 -0400 From: Mac Wubben Subject: Thanks to Glenn (and Maureen) As Glenn Codere previously reported, the Codere household (aka Glenn and Maureen) gave shelter to two weary travelers this past weekend. Alesia and Iarrived on thursday and took advantage of Glenn's hospitality until very early sunday morning. Glenn and I first met at the Altanta national a long long time ago (was that 99?). He had no trouble recognizing me though as we waited for him in the local pub (less than $2 for a pint!). We had a great time wondering through the city. Glenn and Maureen were fabulous hosts...bringing beers, grilling chicken and steak, ferrying us around, giving usa grand tour of the country, expanding my knowledge of whiskey and Scottish history and picking up tab after tab. Not sure if he controls the weather too, but it was absolutely beautiful. What can I say but a grand thanks!I hope Glenn and Maureen will give us a chance to repay them one day. As you might expect, there was the typical baseball discussion. I had a great time remembering the 87 twins triumph over Glenn's tigers...without much complaint. I got to see his impressive Tiger collection too. Glenn evensent me home with a couple great twins cards (from that 87 team) and a 51 Bowman of his hero Bobby Thomson. Thank are hardly enough...but to Glenn and Maureen, thanks for everything! I apologize to the following OBC traders for my tardy thanks. Lot happening for me right now. Monday I was treated to a visit by Kent Goto who was in town for a USBC bowling tournament. We met at the bowling tournament because I have a fondness for bowling, having done a lot of it in the Navy but not lately I'm afraid. Kent and I arrived a little bit early so we could have a few minutes to talk OBC and collecting before he started bowling with his team in the team event that night. Of course Kent brought me some great gifts. A couple of birthyear cards, 1947 Tip Top Bread of Cliff Fanin and 1947 Sunbeam Bread of Ed "Zip" Zipay (a player I was totaly unfamilar with until this point). I can't find the Sunbeam cards in my 2007 Buckett, although I know I've seen them somewhere before. So I know they do exist. Then Kent also hit me with a vintage Hank, a 1971 MLP Stamp. I have a question here. There are two stamps of Hank in this set, #1 (part of Braves team) and #577 (All-Star). I think this is #1, it's a right-facing portrait. Can anyone verify this? After some talk it was time to bowl and I watched Kent, hoping to bring him some good luck. Didn't quite work out that way. Nuff said. Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the visit by Kent and very much appreciate the great cards. Photo of Kent and I attached. Tuesday, my son Barry and I met Rich and Deb Niessen for what is becoming one of our favorite past-times. Having lunch at on of the fabulous buffets offered all over Las Vegas. And we intend to sample them all apparently. Always great to be with Rich and Deb, fun folks for sure and have become great friends. So I think Rich is on some kind of mission though. He continues to obliterate my 1951 Topps Bluebacks, this time with Chico Carrasquel (another great name). I think he's found the my secret printing press. Have to move it. Thanks Rich for a great day and another super card. Wednesday's mail brought a terrific vintage Hank item from our "Family Toad" Brian Lindholme. One that I thought would be on my list forever. But as I told Brian, with OBC the impossible is always possible and he proved it with a 1971 Mattel mini-disc. I was all for some sort of easy trivia question to test if one was eligible for the game -something like "what was Rick Monday's most famous catch?" or "Who was thethrow-in when the Cubs traded Ivan DeJesus to the Phils for Larry Bowa?" But no, money was king, and I got to watch it on TV. There were a lot of very satisfied fans down at the Cubby Bear and Wrigleyville Tap when the skies opened up in the 3rd inning and rained the game out! Mark and I have helped each other on more sets than I can count (although I am not certain if I should thank Mark for getting me started on a few OPC sets or not:).  I win a few lots and the dup box bulges a little bit--and I check Mark's lists.  He must have noticed that I just added the 1964 Philadelphia football set to my lists--as ten beauties from that set showed up yesterday along with a few early 1970s Topps hockey cards of my all time favorite Gilbert Perreault (he made even the best defenseman look helpless).
Many thanks Mark for continuing the never ending swap--(and Mark, just so you know--I think I may post the 1971 OPC set and the T218 set sometime soon)

This week I received 4 packages, which is more than I normally get in a month. I am also being told to be on the lookout for at least 2 other packages. I already reported that Ant Arbeeny finishedoff 2 Globetrotter sets. Many of you have swapped with Patrick Pritchard of VCT who sends me a 2nd return package (the first included a 52 Topps hi # and a Diamond Star Frisch). This time he sent 3 1936 Goudey Wide Pens, a1931 W-517, a pair of 1949 MP & Co (my first hits in about 2 years to thatset), a T-202 center peice only, some hits to my buddy's 62, 63 & 66 Toppslists, and variation hits to 1950 Bowman BB and 1953 Topps. Then Bob Donaldson sent a waiver claim package that I need help IDing. He included a 1953 Brown & Bigelow Ty Cobb playing card (which I only knew because Bob ID'ed it in his post and then a surprise of a Mark Christman, which might be 1/4 of an Exhbit card? I love getting cards I do not know what they are. Latest package was a surprise blast from george Vrechek. He sends along some1983 skeds of UM, which will be passed around to FOOT members, save for Ron Perry who is a MSU fan. Side note: It was quite interesting last year when Glenn Codere was in town and we had a FOOT gathering the weekend of theUM/MSU FB game. The rooting loyalties were fascinating, even though I think Ron was the only one that attended either school. George also sent a 1951 Topps FB card, a 1940 Playball, 1952 Topps Bb red Back #27 Jethroe, getting me within 3 red and 3 black low #s. The ironic card in George's package was a 1949 MP & Co card of Berra. That is right, no hits in 2 years to the set, and then packages 2 days in a row with a Berra. I have an OBC Tipton Berra to swap. The highlight of the package was a 1952 Topps High number of Bob Chipman. The remainder of the package was an awesome collection of a variety of cards from some sets that I have been starting to see a little activity in. There were 35 1972 O Pee Cheecards along with some Posties, 75 Topps Minis, 1960's Fleer cards and someglossy football inserts. Wow, what a great variety of cards!! Many thanks to the OBC community for four recent packages.
Geno Wagner beat me to the punch on an inexpensive T202. It was an upgrade for him--so he sent the "rough" gem to me  After the battle flanked by Devore and Beals Becker.   I truthfully don't know how this card has survived 100-years--but I am grateful for it.
Bob Donaldson generously sends me a 1939 Playball of Bucco Jim Tobin.  He started with the Bisbee club of the Arizona-Texas league.  Must have been Class D.
And two packages today graced with 1952 Topps--our resident chef and our resident chief--Ant Arbeeny and Lynn Miller.  Many thanks guys!
