I am currently in Toronto for the weekend show, and had the great fortune of meeting up with Gord Ellis once again. Gord and I had e-mailed each other of some items we had for the other. I think I came out way ahead yesterday with: 2 of the last 5 1958-9 Parkhurst hockey, of H. Richard and Boom Boom Geoffrion (what a great nickname), 9 1952 Parkhurst CFL (how the swap started) getting me past the 1/2 way mark on what may be the oldest CFL set,3 1949 Leaf Boxing (I need to find my checklist as I now have 36 of them),knocked out 2 1951 Topps Ringside (getting me to the unlucky 13), a singleT-218 (down to 17) and finally, but certainly not least, 12 1954 Quaker Sports Oddities. Taking that set from having only 6 to only needing 9 of this 27 card set! Thanks for the swap, as I did not get that much at the show, other than a stack of 33 1952 Topps High Numbers. We were fortunate enough to meet the local OBC clan of Lynn Miller and Rich Niessen. Joining us was Rich's wife Debbie. Lynn called and said we are coming in the Tower 2 entrance, I will be the guy holding the card box. When we got off the elevator there were 2 people that I had never met personally but felt like I had known for a good while. We proceeded to the food court to grab some assorted dinners, share stories and of course look through the cards. I made out like a bandit (really unusual in Vegas).Rich handed me a stack of vintage cards including hits to my 52T,54T, 56T& 65T sets. Seems Las Vegas is becoming a frequent stop for some OBCers lately. Latest friends in town were Mark and Cathy Holland. Rich & Deb Niessen and I met up with them at their place, the Excalibur, on Thursday evening for an evening of chatting and a some lessons on how to leave your money in Vegas. This day also a celebration of sorts as it marked my entry into retired life as I had just left my permanent government job that day at Hoover Dam to start my Social Security. Had a wonderful time meeting with Mark and Cathy. Of course we learned a little more about each other, our families, work, and collecting. Turns out Mark works with a lot of ex-Navy nuclear operators and technicians who may have served on submarines, so I gave him my list of six "boats" to see if I might have an old shipmate Mark works with. Mark and Cathy travel here once in awhile for vacation so hopefully we will get more chances to meet in the future. And if anyone else has plans for Vegas be sure to let Rich or myself know. We'd love to meet some more of our family. Rich also surprised me with a couple more '51 Topps Bluebacks. This on top of the dozen of those he gave me for my birthday just two weeks ago. What a generous friend. And I suppose I'll take this opportunity to tell everyone about a great eBay find the other day that I showed Mark and Rich, or as Mark puts it "teased" them about. I just was browsing eBay and came across an item that I'm sure any collector who has ever bought on eBay has seen before. Selling 10 card lots for $5 each with a possible treasure in each lot. This particular item offered a few Mantles and other cards in the seller's treasure hunt. He did guarantee at least one card from the 50's or 60's in each lot. So on a whim I purchased four lots. When they arrived, each in a plain letter envelope, I noticed one apparently had a graded card from the obvious plastic case that was inside. Well to my huge amazement it was a Beckett reject for being altered. Someone had apparently tried to erase the Topps copyright on the lower back of the card, a slight imperfection to me. And it was creased but in otherwise perfect OBC shape. For my $5 I picked up a perfectly presentable '57 Mantle!! I was shell-shocked and it almost escaped me that I three other envelopes. One had at '60 Mays and another had a '68 Carlton and the other had a '56 and '57 and few '77's. Not a bad $20 buy and probably the best deal I've ever had on eBay. Call me lucky I suppose. Anway just had to share with the group after I shared it with Mark and Rich. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=180343656196 In the attached photo taken in the Excalibur, it's Rich, Mark and me, left to right. Subject: Thanks, Bill!!

I have a very special thank you to send out today to Bill Ashton.

Yesterday morning, I arrived at work to find a small box from Bill, the latest
dispatch in his ongoing role as my "middle-man". As many of you know, Bill
very kindly takes delivery of items on my behalf from ebay dealers who don't
ship overseas (or charge an arm and a leg to do so!). Every couple ofmonths
or so, Bill forwards whatever he has gathered to me.

This particular package contained a small goldmine of old cardboard dating from
all years between 1961 and 1966, including '62 hi#s, a '63 Cepeda, anda
'64 Willie Horton/Joe Sparma RC. Now, some of you may be asking "Why would
a box be needed for those few cards?". Well, the reason is simple.

The arrangement that Bill and I have developed is that in return for his "services",
I hit his wantlist as often as I can. I've developed a pretty good
nose for bargains on the web, and I've always got Bill's list in mind whenever
I'm searching for stuff. I almost know his list as well as my own! Now
for some crazy reason, Bill is under the impression that our is somehow
skewed, and that I've sent him more stuff than the service he provides merits.
Of course, I think the exact opposite! I can't honestly place a value
on what Bill does for me. My ability to fill out my collection would be severely
dented without his continuing efforts. Anyhoo, Bill (being the generous
chap that he is) took it on himself to redress the "balance" by also enclosing
18 (count 'em.....18!!) packs of my favorite new product, 2009 Topps

What a wonderful gesture. I know that he'll hate me for saying this, but I now
feel that the ball is right back in my court and that return fire is both
necessary and inevitable. And if the ebay gods are with me, I've got something
in mind as we speak......

Two of my most faithful trading partners (and true OBC friends) both hit meyesterday!
JOHN STAMPER sent a variety pack, hitting Topps 66, 69, 70, and
including a 1970 Topps Booklet of Reggie Jackson. In case I've never said
this "aloud," I will gladly take ANY AND ALL Reggie Jackson cards and collectibles,
whether I am collecting those sets or not. John knew this and also
included a Reggie UVer as well, and a pretty cool one at that! Thanks,John!
For once, the return fire hit the mail punctually=97the day before.Keep
your eyes open.

KEN PILLION responded to a waiver request with not one but FIVE high numberblack
beauties! He also stuck in 3 more medium highs for good measure. I'm
always surprised by how good these cards look in excellent or better condition,
which these all are. I now have The Mad Hungarian's rookie card, Sandy
Alomar, and Dick Williams mgr. Thank you, Ken! I'm happy to say yours
is already in the mail, too! Don't get used to this kind of organization
from me.

Cheers, Fellas! Thanks for the cards and, even more, for your friendship.

Peace and Joy,

Mike R-W

Just picked up the mail that I brought in after work. I know there's one
from OBC in here. Let's see...Yep, right between a Macy's and a Kohl's
bill. Return address; Mike & Kimberly Rumley-Wells and addressed to Yaz
Conway. Well, let's open it! It's taped pretty good, gotta get out my
pocket knife, hold on...Hey, I just found a small screwdriver in my
pocket that I forgot to put back in my tool pouch before I left work. (I
was putting a master link on a drive chain together with it. I tend to
put stuff in my pockets as a convenience.) Ok, here we go... I slit open
the top, careful not to cut the insides...Hmm, there are cards wrapped
in a page from a desk calender featuring 'Zits' comics and it is taped
to the envelope. I also do that sometimes to keep the cards from sliding
around and maybe slicing through the envelope. (Time out: One of the
dogs has to go out.) I'm back. Since I've already got my knife out, I'll
just slice through the tape holding the Zits in place...The cards are
out...sort of. There appears to be two cards sandwiched between two
Allen & Ginter's 'Crack the Code' cards. My guess is the A&G cards are
recent Topps game/chase type cards. The back of the Zits page has a note
from Mike. Says it took awhile but he found a couple and hopes I still
need them. Then he talks about the Bosox. Don't think he cares too much
for them but hints that since I do, I'll probably enjoy these cards.
Well that's good incentive to stop typing a second or two and slice the
tape on the A & Gs...Well I'll be...The top card is a 1951 Bowman
Maurice McDermott, truly, a beloved Red Sock. Wonderful! The 2nd card is
not a Red Sox card at all but a much needed 1968 Topps Game card of
Steve Hargan.
Mike, thanks very much for the great cards! Hope the rest of you enjoyed
the Live Opening!
Oh, Yeah. The A & G cards appear to be from 2009 and invite me to crack
the code. Best get to crackin'.

Seems there are many reasons for these "late thanks" messages. I just received
a great envelope full of 1959 Topps from BOB D'ANGELO. Mind you, Bob didn't
just send them, nor did they just arrive at our home, but I did finally
get my hands on them yesterday. Turns out they spent the last few weeks
traveling in my daughter, Annalise's, backpack! The good news is they fared
better than the food that was also in that backpack for far too long.

Bob literally knocked a big hole in my wantlist by sending #168-173! Al told
there were eleven of these circular pics, including the Kansas City team/Checklist
(without even any check marks).

So, thank you Bob, for the great cards! Sorry for the delay but, I think I'm
even more grateful for their survival.

I am behind on sending thanks which I apologize for.
Ken Lillion sent over a 1960 Kessler BB Fan Guide (how many others have those
on their wantlists???) along with some Tiger Postcard size photos.
Gary Mandell pops back some Coke/Sprite/Tab caps including a set completer of
1966 AFL AS.
Bama hits along 2 1933 World Wide Gum BB English version. I am not even close
to 1/2 way of a mixed set and Bama is down to his final few to compeltethis
in both French and English. Amazing.
Ant sends along a few OPC BB wrappers. I am starting to put a wrapper withcomplete
sets when I can pick them up. I have not strted to list the wrappers
yet, but it may happen in the future.
Saw Ron Perry at the recent Redford card show. He had to leave early to gosee
the Tigers finish their sweep.
Mike Mroz also attends the show and hands over some Tiger skeds and a miscut.
Mike and I teamed up to cherry pick some cards from the oldest dealer there,
Bart. Bart has some nice high end stuff, but prices his offgrade stuff
dirt cheap. He almost always has a few cards marked free. Funny thing is,
the free cards would frequently be upgrades for many OBCers. bart knows
my love of the miscut, blank back and wrong backs. Lately he keeps some behind
the table and when he sees me he just gives me a couple. Great marketing
ploy, as it gets me to camp out at this table and I almost always pick
up some cards, plus call over the other OCBers among other collectors. The
ironic pick up from Bart is that he had a 2 card bag of 1953 Red Mans. Included
among the 2 cards was a heavily creased N4 Joe Black with tab, that
completed my March 31 version set. The 2 card bag cost $1, before discount.

Happy Memorial Day OBC!!
Thanks are extended to John Stamper for a number of newer cards--but the package was highlighted by a 1969 decal of Tom Terrific.  A percentage of the group, myself included, is old enough to remember the 1969 miracle mets.  Miracle is not an understatement.
All you have to read is Jimmy Breslin's classic "Can't anybody here play this game" about the early 1960 Mets and the miracle is easier to understand. The Mets simply stunk--and then there was Casey sleeping in the dugout.....
Ain't it a great game.......
And in the immortal words of Chuck Thompson--long time HOF announcer for the Colts and Orioles--
An't the beer cold!
Stay safe this weekend and remember those who have served--

Last night, we threw some wings on theBBQ, pounded some beers, and bored the girls with talkof our card collecting exploits and baseball trivia. A great night!! Mac and Alisha are touring Glasgow today, and the plan is to meet up with them this evening when we'll go along to one of our favorite Indian (Asian) restaurants in town. The weather forecast for today and the weekend is perfect (sunny with temps in the low 70s), so tomorrow the plan is to take a drive north through some beautiful countryside and along the shores of Loch Lomond. Should be good! Of course, Mac didn't arrive empty handed. Oh no. He dragged along several pieces of cardboard which he presented to me last night. Included in the haul were a T206 Summers for the Tigers Collection, several cards from my newly added 1957/'58/'59 sets including no less than a '59 Hank Aaron (!!!!), and a '66 high# (Tigers grand slam king Jim Northrup). Mac also provided a feeding frenzy for me by handing overa box of 2009 Topps Heritage, whichI greedily tore into. I'm getting pretty close on that set now. I'll post up some more details on another server once I've had the chance to update my Incidentally, one of the cards I pulled from those packs was a redemption card for an auto'd 1960 #414 of Pirates pitcher Don Williams (when I first saw the name, I though "What the hell are Topps doing putting autographed cards of country/western singers in their product?"). Anyhoos, I can't redeemthis from overseas, so if there are any Pirates fans (or anyone else for that matter) out there who would like this, just drop me a line and I'll send it right out. In the meantime, I just want to say thanks to Mac for his generosity.
