Hi all... When I last surfaced in October, I was really starting to get the bug for collecting again. Unfortunately, life stepped in... I lost my Dad late October (he had a massive heart attack on what would have been my Mom's birthday... I think he just decided to elope with her like they did in '54...) and then on my way back from my Dad's memorial service I was notified by my new boss at Kaplan that she had decided to terminate my employment (not related to the funeral... that was just bad timing...). After 4 1/2 years of building a successful tutoring program it really stung... still can't fully come to terms with it. What I have come to terms with, however, is that I've had a wonderful opportunity to spend far more time with my family and be there for my friends, some of whom have had their own share of trouble. I've also had the time and desire to reconnect with my collecting buddies... had a great conversation with Steve Rittenberg a couple weeks ago and then got a trade offer from one of the newer guys (Gord Ellis) and discovered the OBC spirit is still alive and well. I've also recently received a couple packages from guys that I need to thank. First off, though, I want to thank Yaz for a nice trio of '60s that arrived in November. Sorry I wasn't up to communicating much at that time, but the cards definitely put a smile on my face that day. More recent thanks go out to Josh Levine for *another* trio of '60s... deja vu, except that they were different players. Two days later I received another package, this time from a guy I'd never even met or spoken to... John Dahms. John sent me two awesome '64s -- Frank Malzone and Fred Valentine -- a cool '65 of Gil Hodges as a manager, and a '71 high number! Only in OBC!! Thank you, guys... Now for the very, very old thanks... As I was going through the newer packages and starting to become more active, I went downstairs and pulled out a stack of envelopes that arrived long ago that somehow I lost the decency to acknowledge... They included (with dates): Tom Massimo =96 April 24, 2008 =96 (5) `67s=85 #'s 114 (Jack Baldschun), 126 (Tony Taylor), 160 (Willie Davis), 168 (Ray Culp), 121 (Ed Bressoud) Michael Mroz =96 November 5, 2007 =96 some awesome hockey cards from '75-76 Topps Dan Angland =96 April 24, 2006 =96 a catcher for Ben's collection =96 2000 SkyBox #78 (Todd Pratt) Wow... that feels better! Sorry for the extreme delay on these... I have a feeling there's more "down there" but I wanted to at least get these logged in and accounted for. I also found my dupes box... availables coming soon! Take care and thanks to all for your patience and kindness. Mike Mroz, as is his custom, was there first. Ron Perry could not make it, so I was again 2nd to show up, followed by Mark Talbot. Earl Kilborne rounded out the group for the day. Mark knocked me out with a pair of T-218s, including a billiard and a boxer. Earl joined me for lunch at a regular retreat, Eastside Mario's, where we were disappointed to find out did not have the Big Ten Network to watch Michigan lose to Wisconsin in a close game. We therefore watched the Pistons upset the Celtics. Earl treated me to some Chicken Fingers and then handed me a miscut card (I love the wrong back, miscut, blank back oddities) and a pair of UV cards to finish the 2001 Sunoco Dream Team set. At the show, OBC friendly dealer, Mike Sandles handed me a box of cards to pass out among OBC. These are in OBC shape that Mike sets aside for us. Mike sells mostly offgrade cards, so you can imagine what these are like that he provides us to mail out. Earl got first dibs and was able to pull out a bakers dozen highlighted by 5 1959 Topps AS cards. That is correct 5 AS high numbers. While most of the cards were from the late 60s and early 70s there are some other goodies in there, that folks will enjoy. I think I saw most of a 58 Mays, but will have to verify. While most of the box was vintage there was some UV in there, and I even found a 1988 Topps BB coin for my set. KENT GOTO hit my big uv project with a nice box that included a sweet swinging man named Joe DiMaggio. Finally, RICK LYONS completes a trade by sending over an all-Canadian box. Inside were 13 hits to my 65 opc, 1 to the 67 opc, 14 hits to the 68 opc, 12 hits to the 69 opc, 118 hits to the 70 opc, 57 hits to the 71 opc, 5 hits to the 72 opc, 10 hits to the 73 opc, 2 hits to the 75 opc both picturing Reggie Jackson, 2 hits to the 77 opc - one a leader card with Brett and Madlock, the other a leader card with Ryan and Seaver, 7 hits to the 78 opc with Reggie, McCovey, Scmidt, Winfield, and a Ryan/Niekro leader card, and 1 hit to the 79 opc. As I reached the bottom of a pile of recent and not so recent mail, I discovered
an envelopethat was even more embarrassing then Kent's (see UV server

I can't even claim that the envelope was one that I had previously
overlooked since the envelope was open and the card was gone. Irecall bindingit
over, but can't recall the year so I'm not even sure if this is the
appropriate server. My apologies Tom, Sparky is always appreciated here at
the House of Maxwell regardless of the year!

LYNN MILLER is like that girl in high school who every guy liked, and
who every guy thought liked him, because she was so nice and paid such
special attention...to everyone. I feel like Lynn singles me out with
his extravagance...but then I read the Thanks posts and realize he is
this over-the-top with everyone. Actually, I think Lynn Miller is
better than that girl in high school, since he does all this and doesn't
break our hearts in the process!!

Lynn just killed my 1977 Topps set!!! A Bruce Sutter RC and a Bill
Robinson were the holdouts, and Lynn delivered both in great condition
(Sutter has a good-looking gum mark on the back, which always makes me
nostalgic). Of course, Lynn sends more than merely the set killers,
because he's Lynn. He also pummeled my 69s with seven (AL batting ldrs
with Yaz), 70s with 8 (NL RBI ldrs MCcovey, Santo, Perez; ERA ldrs
Marichal, Carlton, Gibson--what a great trio!; Killebrew, McCovey AS),
71s with 6 (a high #) and 75s with seven (Kaline hits 3,000; 52 MVPs,
Gene Michael)!

Lynn's timing equals his generosity; Annalise is back in Children's
Hospital for another surgery, and these cardboard gifts are my best
medicine, a welcome diversion from worrying about things I can't change.

Lynn, you are a great man, a fine friend, and an amazing card "trader."

PS The surgery went well and we should find out any minute whether
we'll have to spend the night or if we get out of here and head home.

Subject: Some cardboard pleasures....

My friends,

It has been a nice last month as my wife and I got to enjoy a spring break vacation
to Northern California to visit some old friends from when we lived
and worked there a few years ago. Both before during and after, great cardboard
found its way to my door, including the following:

Ken Morganti sent along some recent dealer/eBay scum offerings (a starter set
from the 1963 Topps football set). Of course, knowing Ken, he had to sneak
some cardboard kindness in the mix, with a 1960 Leaf high number of GinoCimoli!
Nice lot with a nice surprise Ken!

Kent Goto sent a nice sized boxed filled with uv treasures (some of which looked
like they were actually cards well over a hundred years old -- maybe Allen
and Ginter, perhaps)! With current stars and short prints, this box was
greatly appreciated! Thanks Kent!

Glenn Codere sends along very appropriate Super Bowl winnings, with four vintage
60s pigskin cards, including two 66 Phillies! Great cards Glenn!

Bob Reed sends a ten-pack of hits to my newly posted 75 mini set (a set that
I had started six years ago, but than broke up in trades for other cards --
but I=92m back on the hunt!) Thanks for the helpers Bob!

Gersh continues the 75 Topps mini surge with a four pack of great of sharp looking
hits! Thanks Larry!

Bob Donaldson sends four hits to my 1977 Hostess Twinkies set, including a couple
of great pitchers in the mix (Gossage and Eckersley)! Tough hits to a
tough little set -- thanks Bob!

I had been talking to George Vrechek about the 1968 Milton Bradley variations
of the Topps set, and was having trouble picking them out. To help me get
a feel for them, he kindly sent two dupes my way, getting me started on the
set (and helping me find two more in my own set)! He also threw in a 1963
Post Orlanda Cepeda hit as well! Thanks for the information and the greatcardboard!

Marshall West sent along a SCP from the 63 Post set (Leon Wagner) -- thanksfor
the great card!

Mac Wubben sends along double trouble in the form of two 1952 Bowman hits (Frank
Smith and Eddie Stewart) -- great cards Mac!

Ray Luurs gets the tack my breath away award this week, as he noticed that I
was going to start the 63 Jello set and offers to help get me started . ..
By sending one of the key cards in the set -- Mickey Mantle! Any day an authentic
Mantle finds its way into the mailbox is a great day -- but to have
him accompanied by two more Jellos plus a 63 Post Sandy Koufax! All I can
say is WOW!

Andy Cook sent a great SCP for my Super Bowl win -- and it was a nice one --
a 48 Bowman of Dodger pitcher Rex Barney! Thanks for the booty Andy!

Gary Mandell hits me with a DCP of 75 minis! Thanks for the cards Gary!

Kit Okamuro sends some basketball hits my way with two 74-75 upgrades and a73-74
SCP! Thanks for the fire Kit!

Bob D=92Angelo continues to pleasure both me and my wife (insert joke here)as
he sends two flats my way -- a new uv card of my wife=92s favorite new Astros
catcher and two uv hits for me as well! Thanks -- it feels so good!

Spike Glidden helps me give my wife a history listen, as he includes samples
from the 39, 40 and 41 Play Ball sets -- one of each! Great looking cardsSpike,
and they are greatly appreciated!

Kevin Martens sends along a nice group of five 1975 Topps minis that get megoing
on my newly added set, with three 1968 Topps upgrades going along for
the ride! Very nice cards Kevin!

Neal Thomas sends along thee 1960 Topps back variations, including a favorite
of mine -- Hoyt Wilhelm! Thanks for the TCP Neal!

Thanks again all around for the great cardboard=85.

Be happy,

John Scott Gray

I need to thank three great OBCers for sending some wantlist damage my way:

STEVE HITZEMAN send three great reminders of the vaunted 1969 NL East pennant
race: Jerry Koosman and two Cubs, Al Spangler and Jim Hickman (himself an
original '62 Met)...all in their grey-bordered 1970 glory! What's better is
that the cards went toward the back of the binder. I'm getting closer onthis
set...maybe I need to focus on getting closer to putting it to be in Cleveland
this Summer...

TOM HOUSLEY sends along seven cards: three are hits to my '68 Topps Game list
and the rest are slightly beyond the OBC horizon but include Andre Dawson,
Ozzie Smith and recent HOF inductee Rickey Henderson!

KENT GOTO sends along nearly 30 cards that also hit my latter-day wantlists...and
he earns HERO status by wiping out the most recent year of Topps I collect!
Kent also gets me a little closer on several sets where I'm alreadyrounding
third base...like a good #rd base coach, he's encouraging me to take
it home.

Thanks for the cardboard love!

Take care,

Hi, Team. Returning from Children's Hospital Wednesday night late (making yesterday
a blurry day), I found two of those treasured envelopes.
ED SCHOTT sent a hit to my 1967 Topps list and eight to my 1968 Topps. Onewas
Rene Lacheman, looking much less managerial then he would in future years.
All of 'em were medium high numbers, a rare and valuable commodity for
any of my sets. Thanks, Ed!

Speaking of high numbers, SEAN MCGOWAN sent two high numbers to my 1970 Topps
set--in fact, they instantly became the highest numbers I have for this set!
Heck yeah, GO OBC! Thanks, Sean. Good to see a Yankee in there, too.
Can't say I carefully followed Frank Tepedino's career, but at least nowI
know he had one. Frank had a lifetime .241 avg over 8 seasons--which means
he outhit Rene by twenty-one points. Ah, baseball.

Thanks, Guys. Much appreciated and good timing. Annalise seems to be doing
well following her surgery Wednesday. I wish she didn't have to go through
this, but since she does, I'm grateful that she gets excellent medical care.
Plus, she constantly amazes me with her great attitude. We really dolearn

Hey Gals and Guys:
Belated thanks go out to Bob Bannon for blasting me with 8 '54 Topps
beauties. But Bob's largesse arrived in two pieces, though he sent only
one! How did this miracle happen? Only from the cold machinations of the
postal sorting machines. Bob had cleverly stuffed 2 cards in 4 top loaders
and placed them in a #10 envelope. The USPS machine cut the envelope
exactly in half. When I dug them out of my PO box, all cards were safely
tucked in their top holders, 2 top holders to a half envelope. I went to the
counter and showed my friendly postal clerk the result and he said: "Happens
all the time. We get boxes of damaged mail. Very unusual for your two
halves to show up together."
On a less violent note, John Stamper's envelope arrived in one piece with a
SCP '51 Topps Redback of Wayne Terwilliger.
Thanks to both of you for your spring generosity!!

A pair of thank you messages going out this morning from a bright and sunny Glasgow (although we have cold wind and sleet forecast for later today.....yeuchhh!)

Gord Ellis chips in with a beautiful SCP, a 1969 #116 Lou Michaels. Lou's blurb on the back tells me that he was successful on 18 of 28 FG attempts the previous season. How times have changed! A kicker with that kind of record these days would get the bum's rush out the door PDQ!!

Tom Housley made my day with 5 1971 Topps Supers, all encased in a "genuine" wrapper!! (I'm definitely going to check out baseballwrappers.com!). The 5 cards in questions were an All Star lineup including Fergie Jenkins, Jim Perry, Cesar Cedeno, Rico Petrocelli (think he ever finshed that brick wall?), and Felix Millan. Now as the older OBCers out there remember, what was a pack of cards from the early 70s without some sort of insert? Well, this pack was no exception, as it included a pair of 1960s which knock a couple numbers off my greyback/whiteback quest.

Terrific cards, guys! A great way to set up my weekend!

Hey Gang,
A great day at the mailbox has helped to put a smile on my face. The last few
days have been tough as my wife has been in the hospital. As some of you
know, we are expecting twins, due June 13th. Well, a routine examination
on Wednesday ended up being anything but routine. My wife went from being
fine, to modified bedrest, to admission into the hospital within a 20 hour
span. She has been having contractions and they just can't get them to stop.
They have subsided to about one every hour, but the doctors say that she
needs to have them stop completely. So, the last few days have been tough
for her and my son as well. He's a big mama's boy and he is missing her

Anyway, today's mail brought in four packages. Thanks to GARY MANDELL whosends
over a hit to the 33 Goudey set. It's a great addition Gary. Thank

ED SCHOTT sent over a waiver wire claim. I think I claimed a single OPC card
from him, maybe it was a 75 mini, but Ed sent over a 9 pack. He hit a few
different OPC sets with some classic Oriole players including Mike Cuellar,
a 75 mini showing the batting leaders Carew and Garr, a 73? TCMA reprint
card of Dale Alexander, and some UV red sox and OPC. Thanks Ed!

MARK TALBOT was gracious enough to lose to me TWO TIMES in the NCAA tourney.
Mark sends over a couple of hockey hits and some hits to my UV inserts. Thank
you Mark!

Finally, a non OBC trade with Randy Welk. Randy sent over 10 cards, most of
them vintage. A few hits to the 75 mini, a 78 Dawson, a 71 super of Mighty
Mel, and a 68 Namath. Randy also sent some uv hits. He sent first andhasn't
even sent me his wantlist yet. He is considering joining out groupand
I give him a huge thumbs up!

Thanks guys! OBC continues to be the greatest collecting group out there.
