Bob Neill sent me 10 cards from 1969. Some of them were pretty high numbers.
Also, there was this big cool looking thing. I had to look it up. A 1935Wheaties
of Travis Jackson. That was fun to get

Subject: Lynn Miller package found!

Great news - the Lynn Miller package has been found! The package has mysteriously
resurfaced, which is almost like getting it twice! Probably can't blame
the cats, it would be unkind to blame my wife or 2nd grader leaving ...gnomes?
Better not look in the mirror or I may detect another suspect. Better
write about it and get the cards safely stored away.

And this is a great package the finishes my 1977 Topps set. This is the first
set that I started collecting as a kid and the second set that Lynn has finished
off for me after taking finishing my 1976 Topps also.  What a great
package with Ryan, another Ryan, another Ryan, Schmidt, Dawson rookie card
and the strangely elusive "Big League" Brothers of Paul and Rick Reuschel.
I guess their mom liked it so much that she cornered the market!  And a couple
of Aarons including a patch of the Home Run King - I have never seenanything
like it before.  Thanks Lynn!

And in other great news, I am just finishing up a report on low greenhouse gas
technology that I edited and wrote much of. Its a report by committee, which
actually wasn't as bad as it seems. Was formally more immersed in rules
& regulations at the federal government, so this is a welcome change.

Well Gals and Guys:
I thought I had blown my OBC Secret Santa Christmas pkg. by inadvertently
opening an envelope from John Leroux that had two '54 Topps winners inside
-- Vic Janowicz and Billy Hunter.
John's note said Happy OBC Holidays, but when I examined the envelope there
was no "Do NOT open until Xmas" notations splattered all over it.
Interestingly though, there is a Kermit the Frog look-a-like cancellation
stamp that seems a bit weird (from Tulsa, OK?). Maybe it's an elf with
But when I checked the OBC Thanks digest, I saw that most of the gratitude
was directed at John, so I didn't screw up...this time.

George Vrechek sent a package including a few Salutation Exhibits and a stack
of 1963 Topps FB.  I keep nibbling away at sets like the Salutations Exhbits
and I am close to 1/2 way on that set.  The 1963 Topps FB is now knownto
have a "purple sky" variations similar to the 1962 Topps BB green tints.
I still do not know how to tell them apart, but have been working on a dupes
A cousin of mine moved from the Boston area to Philadelphia.  She is now a big
Phillies fan and went to Game 4 of the World Series.  She sent me a special

Subject: Terrible news got much better!  Thanks Mac!

So, I was awaken by my nurse this morning.  She informed be that my urinalysis
had returned.  The results were worse than I had expected.  Apparently
I have a bladder infection called pseudomosis, which is usually only treatable
by IV antibiotics.  She told me that I MUST go to the hospital immediately.
She then called back and said that it *is* treatable by a prescription
drug!!! (Had ENOUGH of hospitals & needles).

I was feeling quite depressed WHEN...

My caregiver came in with a large yellow puffy from Mac Wubben (Wooooh!).Inside
was a STACK of cards.  The most mentionable being a 1933 GOUDEY Walter
Stewart, a '68 DON SUTTON, and a '68 Dodgers team card!  And that isn't
all!  Also included were 7 cards for my '55 Bowman set and 11 cards towards
my '68 set (including 4 world series cards)!!!

That was a helluvuh' package Mac, and it most definitely made me feel 10xbetter
about the bad news about my health condition.

The (psychic?) miracle of OBC pulls through again!

THANKS GREATLY, MAC!!! (and you are 100% correct about updating my wantlist...
I ran it by my roommate and he doesn't mind helping me sort through mycards;
so this shouldn't be a problem for much longer)

Not with cash, so don't go asking for a loan or anything.

My wife and I met Rich & Debbie Niessen this year on a trip to Vegas.  We became
friends and stayed in touch regularly. So I got home last night and saw
an opened Christmas card from Rich laying on the counter.  I thought this
is good, I hope they are doing well.  My wife quickly said that you had better
open it.  Sure enough there was a card inside a card.  Rich included another
51 Topps Blue Back (Roy Smalley).  I only have 4 so far and Rich has
sent all 4.  He must have a stash of them in one of those casinos that heand
Debbie visit so often.

Greetings, all!

The mail lady rang the doorbell a few minutes ago - once I fought my way through the dogs, I opened the door to reveal a gigantic puffy from my OBC Santa, who this year is also known as Evansville's own Greg Conway. Inside the package was a wonderful surprise - it turns out that Greg was just an intermediary for 7 of my Dodger heroes. Yes, 7 individual gifts from these 7 great Dodgers: Maury Wills, Don Drysdale, Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Sandy Koufax, Steve Garvey and Duke Snider. Unbelievable, I can't wait to see what they sent!

Hi gang,
These thanks are so overdue, the senders have probably forgotten  about
sending me anything. Well, Mark Talbot probably didn't forget. He sends
everyone something on their birthday. Mine was in September. Although the
package arrived a couple weeks afterwards, the thank you shouldn't have waited a
couple months after that. I'm pretty sure there was a 56 or two for that
set and  a couple Star Wars cards including a couple from the yellow and red
sets in an  attempt to start me on those (I won't bite though). THANKS MARK!!
Shortly after Mark's package arrived, I got return fire from  Brock
Hattox for me sending him... well, nothing actually. I had offered to take  his
list with me to the Philly show back in September (remember, these thanks
are old). Well, the one card I did find on his list had already been obtained
by  the time I sent it to him. Brock sent over a fine looking 56 Giants team
for my  troubles. THANKS BROCK!!
Well, Santa Carl Mura's delivery arrived today and is sitting on the
tree taunting me for a week. Maybe if I cover it over with garland and a few

I believe this morning is the first time I have been on line since Dec 12. I
have received 2 surprise packages.  The first one from Rich Niessen contained
the last "common" Topps card I needed.  A 1951 Blue Back Waitkus. I am
now down to Schoendienst and Mize to complete that set.  I have been trying
to complete this set for about 2 years now, and have been unable to locate
these last few.  Big hit.
The other package was from Mac Wubben.  Mac sends along a 1947 Tip Top.  There
are very few big cards among the 163 cards in this set.  I have almost 1/2
the stars among the 28 cards I now have, but this is another set, that I
rarely get hits to.  Then Mac sends along 6 T-206s, including a skinned/timmed
Jennings.  This moves me from 51 to 52% done on the monster.  Nice big

I am showing an auction that is currently on e-bay that is one of the most unique
items that i have seen.  For a little fun, I am asking OBC people toguess
what this item will ultimately sell for.  The game was put out about1969
buy Milton Bradley and is called Win-A-Card.

This item appears to be the original game with unopened box of cards.  The cards
in this set would include 1968 Milton Bradley cards which look exactly
like Topps cards except the backs of the cards are clearly more bright yellow.
There are over 70 baseball cards in the Milton Bradley set and they include
a Ryan rookie, Seaver, Aaron, Carew, Brooks Robinson etc.  In addition
to the untouched baseball cards there are also approximately 30 Milton Bradley
football cards that look like 1967 Topps football cards.  These cards
include a Namath and a Biletnikoff.  There are also some "Hot Rod cards"

Of note is that this site states that the baseball cards should include a Mantle,

Just returned from my 6 week trip to the Philippines and came back with my wife.  Left the children there with mother-in-law to finish the school year in March when she will return by herself.  Still not permanent on the Immigration yet, hopefully will conclude that mess by the time the children finish school at which time I will return and see if we can all come to the U.S. before the next school year starts here.  Regret that I was unable to participate in this year's OBC Christmas.  However that did not stop a few of you from remembering me and I certainly do appreciate the thought and early Christmas presents.  In no particular order super thanks go to the following great OBC traders.  Peter Mead hits the tough Hank vintage list with a 1962 Jello, wow! Andy Cook sends a surprise Hank item that I believe is vintage but haven't identified yet so don't know if it's a hit or not yet while I research and compare to what I already have.  But it's a 3 X 6
B&W card head portrait with Hank Aaron in all caps across the top with blank back and no identifying information.  Andy if you can help me out on this and thanks very much.  Mark Z sends kind of a very unique Hank item.  It's a wrapper from Topps that I didn't think was gum inside because it was more caramel like in color and consistency.  So I'm surprised Topps dealt with anything but gum.  I didn't bother to try and taste it to confirm.  Maybe it's just some really old gum.  I discarded the contents and cleaned up the wrapper.  But the wrapper is from1981 Topps Sports Facts No. 21 of 56.  Anyone know anything about these because my SCD doesn't list this set.  "Catfish" Parker sends me the complete 1974 Street and Smith's Baseball Official Baseball Yearbook with Hank on the cover.  Jimmy notes the ads for card prices were so much more affordable in those days.  And those were the days.  One interesting ad has the Wagner T-206 as an example and states
it was worth $200 10 years ago (1964) and recently sold for $1,500 so now is the time to invest in cards.  Well we all know that Gretzky paid $450,000 for that card about 25 years later so it definitely was a worthwhile investment.  Finally, it just wouldn't be the OBC holiday spirit with something from Mark Talbot.  Mark continues to amaze.  I get a Tiger and Hank item at the same time.  Tiger's book "In Search of Tiger".  How appropriate since he's in hiding now :>) and has fallen from grace with many of us followers.  Also an uncut sheet of major league baseball stamps that includes Hank.  However I already have the single stamp of this sheet so in Mark's name if there is a serious stamp collector among you who would like to have this sheet I would be happy to send it along.  The other players on the sheet are Gary Carter, Gaylord Perry as a Mariner, Ty Cobb, Andre Dawson, Charlie Hough as a Ranger, Kirby Puckett, Robin Yount and Don Drysdale.

My OBC Santa this year was Richard Labs from the sunny state of  Texas.  I
received his gift about a week before Thanksgivung and it has  been
tormenting me ever since.  But it was worth the wait as I got up to go  to work this
morning I quickly opened it up to 3 1963 Fleers and two 1963 topps
football nocking both those sets down to a bakers dozen and under 10 so those  two
sets might be finished in the 2010 year.  Thanks Richard for the nice  cards
for christmas.

OBC Santa Bob Reed sends along almost 20 hits to 10 different sets!!!
As Bob's note states, he wanted me to have a Blue Christmas, so he
included a nice '73 Vida Blue. And to help out with those gifts that
don't come with batteries, he also includes a '73 Alkaline version.
Other highlights include a '72 Dave McNally (at the height of his
career, coming off a 21-5 record and getting 20 wins for the 4th
consecutive year) and what I've always thought was one of the neatest
looking cards ever, the '71 Topps Thurman Munson. The great action
shot combined with the black borders just make this card too cool (if
only Munson had that menacing mustache then...) Bob also includes
hits to Topps sets from 1970, 1966, 1963, 1960, 1959, 1958 and '56.

My OBC Santa this year was Bob Donaldson, and he certainly must have thought
I was good this year. What a package!

Several cards were wrapped in original Fleet Baseball wrappers, I am guessing
the 1981 version since it says premier edition. Inside were some real gems
-- a 1968 Topps football card of Jack Concannon, a 1952 Topps baseball card
of Gene Bearden, a 1952 Topps black back card of Marv Rickert, and two hits
to my 1974 Topps football set -- Terry Bradshaw and Greg Landry. That leaves
me with one card to go in that set -- Otis Taylor.

Jimmy Catfish Parker sends a cool mix of cards hitting 5 lists! '71
Super of Boog Powell which I almost bought on ebay this week - that
set doesn't get hit very often. A '75 Kellogs Jose Cardenal with a
background that looks like the surface of Mars - I am such a sucker
for "3d" and science fiction! A '71 of Terry Harmon, and a '73 of Norm
Miller, and then a big stack of '61s including Norm Cash, Harvey
Haddix, and Luis Aparicio - awesome cards! There was also a Dick
Ellsworth card in there - I was in a wedding party with his son, who
pitched briefly for the Red Sox. His son is 6'8 or so and I was the
shortest guy in the wedding party at 6'1. Thanks Jimmy for an awesome
OBC Christmas haul!

I would have written my thanks awhile ago--but I have been wrapped up reading a February 1952 Sporting News--two specific articles jumped out an me:  1) Andy Seminick commenting on why my HOMer Jim Konstanty slid backwards during the 1951 season.  It was all about the mechanics of his delivery--in his MVP 1950 season his delivery was apparently quite deceiving.  And he simply never found it again.  And  2)--an article on the competition for the Yankees centerfeld job after DiMaggio's retirement.  Mantle's knee was still not fully healed from the 51 WS and Jackie Jensen wanted the job.
Many thanks to my OBC Santa Geordie Calvart for the early Sporting News and some other reading material--a 1951 biograpy from the MVP series on Big Jim Konstanty highlighting his 1950 season.  And finally an early 1960s GAD Fun card of Konstanty in a PSA8 holder.  I don't think I have a card in my collection that is graded PSA8.

This week I have received two things from Washington, DC - a Senate health
bill and a Secret Santa gift from Mac Wubben.  I am much happier with Mac's
gift - a large photo of the 1943 National League Pennant winners, the St.
Louis Cardinals.
The photo features Manager Billy Southworth, Mac's favorite, along with a
22 year old  pitcher turned outfielder named Stan Musial who was the MVP
after hitting .357 that year.  The Cardinals went on to lose the WS to the
Yankees, 4 games to 1.
This photo will be framed and hung in a place of honor in my home.

Thanks out to Rich Niessen, for a "set killer" card and an extra that will probably end up costing me a bunch of money!

Rich sends along the last 55 Bowman needed for my Tribe team set - a mostly forgotten player named Bill Wight. The card has one of those interesting card backs - indicates that he was 17-5, 1.93 in the PCL in 1954. First thought is what ever happened to this great prospect - and then I noted that he was 33 years old at the time. Also one of the great baseball nicknames - "Lefty" Wight.

Now the expensive part - Bill enclosed a 2010 calender from his Las Vegas hometown - my wife looks at it and say "You know, we should head out to Las Vegas for a few days this spring...."

Weather here in Ohio is rain, rain, rain. Hope it does not freeze later today.

Last night, while the wife was wrapping presents, I was watching the clock tick

Banks!), which gets that set down under the 30 mark

Subject: Santa loves off condition vintage

I was fortunate enough to have a Santa that could hit my "Type Card" list with
cards of comparable condition to my other oldies.  My secret Santa was Larry
"Guru" Tipton.  I was well aware of what these card would be like.....well
loved, creased, paper missing with writing.  The guru, I mean Santa didn't
let me down.  He took the time to write down what each card was so that
I would not have to research it myself.

Included in Guru Santa's package was a 1911 T205 (most of it anyway), a 1934
Batter Up (~75% of it with writing), a 1963 Bazooka.  The guru added a note
that the Bazooka wasn't in that bad of shape and he wondered how it got in
his collection.  And then to cap it off he sent me an autographed 1960 Al
Kaline....too bad it was autographed by some guy named Mike Carter instead
of Al Kaline.

These deserve scans and fortunately, my other Santa brought me a new scanner.
Thanks Guru Santa.  I can't wait until next year to get the other half of these
2 cards.

Happy holidays gang!
Carl Mura was my Secret Santa this year and he didn't  disappoint! The
cards were wrapped in a nice note explaining what was inside.  There were two
old Red Sox cards (a 55B Goodman and a 59T Malzone), a couple  tobacco
issues in the form of a Secretary Vulture and boxer Young Donohue.  Finally, the
most prized card in the lot - a 1950 Bowman Danny Litwhiler! Why is  this
one so cherished? It's one of the last ten without the copyright that I
needed for my set - and these have been on my list for years. Carl did a great
job removing the copyright line - so good that it looks like it was never
there.  There IS a date stamped on the back, but it's "JUN 4 1951" in purple
ink, so I'm  guessing it wasn't anything put on there by Bowman ;-) THANKS
SANTA CARL!! Hope  everyone out there has a good holiday and a happy and

Duke Snider: "The Story of the Brooklyn Dodgers", a Bantam Book from 1949 with an introduction by Red Barber. The cover has an illustration of Pee Wee Reese jumping over an opposing baserunner while (successfully, I'm sure) attempting to complete a double play. What a cool little book. I've got quite a stack of books waiting for me to read them, but those're gonna have to wait until this one gets a look.

Steve Garvey: Major League Baseball Yearbook '82 magazine with Fernando Valenzuela on the cover. The cover story is entitled: Fernando's Screwball Saves the Dodgers and Baseball! Can He Do It Again?. Others appearing on the cover: Baseball's Best Hitter - Mike Schmidt Bids for Third MVP, Guidry's Louisiana Lightning Boosts Yankees, The Stolen Base - Mightier Than the Home Run? (with Raines & Rickey Henderson pictured).

Jackie Robinson: a special World Series issue of The Sporting News from October 22 1977, featuring the 30-homer club from the Dodgers - Reggie Smith, Dusty Baker, Ron Cey and Steve Garvey. Might be painful to read - that was the first series the Dodgers appeared in after I became a fan. We all know what happened that October. 

Gil Hodges: a hit to the 1966 birth year set - Herman Franks

Maury Wills: another hit to the '66 - Mets rookie stars Dave Eilers/Rob Gardner

Sandy Koufax: yet another hit to the '66 - the Phils' Larry Jackson

Don Drysdale: Don sent what I thought was a hit to the '66 (Wes Parker), but for the toploader it was in, which identified it as a '66 Venezuelan. I've never had one before, so I had to do some research. As a Venezuelan, I was expecting some part of the back to be in Spanish, but it wasn't, which confused me for a bit. I pulled the Wes Parker from my Dodger set, and with the exception of the different coloring on the front & back of the card, it was identical. Pulled out my Standard Catalog and found that the coloring was the definitive difference between the two issues. Cool, my first Venezuelan!!

Greg, thanks again for the thoughtful and original way that you presented my gift. I love every part of it, and will continue to enjoy the book and magazines for quite some time to come.

Subject: Christmas thanks.

My OBC Secret Santa package arrived in late November so I had to put it away
to avoid temptation.  Inside were two hits to my Bowman sets.  A 1953 Color
Lou Boudreau who was the last manager to win a championship for the Indians
and a 1950 of local star, Walt Dropo.  Walt was a 3 sport star at UConnand
for a while was the University=92s all time leading scorer in basketball.
He was drafted in the 1st round by the Providence Steamrollers and also
in the 9th round in football by the Chicago Bears.  However he chose baseball
and had a decent career including winning the ROY.

Thanks Santa whoever you are.  I appreciate the hits.  All I have to go on is
a Boston postmark.  Hope everybody had a happy and safe Christmas.

Well Gals & Guys:
I always really enjoy writing out my  Secret Santa thanks, usually the day
after Christmas.  That way I read all about the OBC love that has been
spread around.  And this posting will go to Ramblings as well, because I
couldn't figure out if it should post as Thanks or Ramblings, and it fits
both, so that's what I will do.  And I'm trying to pick up some of the
Morganti slack when it comes to longish postings.....

My Secret Santa this year was Mark Talbot, and Mark surprised me with a nice
little paperback, "The Complete Super Bowl Story: Games 1-XXIV"  (For the
Latin-challenged, it's One through 24 or 1967 through 1990.)   And Mark
studded the book with old cardboard bookmarks like a 54 Ted Kluzsewski and
numerous FB cards.

What really got me, though, was the timing.  Earlier in the fall, my son
Trent and I traveled to Spokane so he could take the Foreign Service Officer
exam, and while we were there, the Vikings, led by Brett Favre, took on the
Packers, for the first time with Brett at the helm.  It was a great game and
I talked with my son about the glory years of the Vikings when they used to
dominate their division with Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page, Carl Eller etc.
They made FB unbelievably exciting.

Which brought me back to my agony of being a Viking fan and watching them go
down in flames three times in the Super Bowl.
But it was only when I paged through the book Mark had just sent me that I
realized I was making the damage less traumatic by a game.   The Vikes lost
the Super Bowl FOUR times: Kansas City 1970, Miami 1974, Pittsburgh 1975,
Oakland 1977.

1977 was when I stopped watching pro football. Now I'll watch a couple of
the exciting playoff games and watch the SuperBowl to see the advertising,
but when Bud Grant couldn't win the big one...that was it for me.  I'm not
whining -- there's just so much a fan can take.
This year I'm rooting for all the Viking(Packer?) fans who hope the Purple
People Eaters make it to the big game.  They'll just have to show me....

Hello All,

With allthe
=E2=9CSecret Santa=E2=9D posts I spent some time getting my thank
you post together for the past few weeks or so.  I looked carefullyat
all the envelopes to see if any had the =E2=9Ctell-tale=E2=9D DO NOT
OPEN TILL CHRISTMAS but saw none.  So if one of these packages came
from my Secret Santa please speak up so I can properly thank you. Despite
being unaware about the =E2=9CSecret Santa=E2=9D offering the
hits just keep coming and I am amazed at the near endless supply of cardboard
that you guys have to help me in my collecting quest.  Here are some
of the latest fellow traders to address something to SE Michigan .

Anthony Arbeeny clobbers my `56 Topps Davy Crockett set with (12) solid hits
bringing me very close to completion of the set.  It=E2=99s not too
often that I get a dozen hits to a vintage set Thanks Ant-man!!!

Richard Dingman all ows me to claim off waivers (4) `54 Bowman variation cards
I have been on the hunt for.  These pesky stat variation cards are
difficult to find and Richard zipped (4) of them my way.  Thanks somuch
and I will take a look for some of them you need sometime this week!!!

Peter Mead who has become well known for his deep dupe box of Post and Jello
cards continues =E2=9Cthe never ending trade=E2=9D with a couple `63
Jello cards (Bunning and Rakow), a very sm all =E2=9Cmini=E2=99 card
of Al Rosen (I don=E2=99t know what this is) and another American Tract
Society Tra-card of Footb all player Jim Romig.  Peter correctly indicates
I=E2=99m now collecting a set I never dreamed I would be collecting.

Bob Neill hits the TIGER collection with a very cool Schoolboy Rowe cut outfrom
a Wheaties box vintage 1935-36.  To keep this excellent addition
to my TIGER binder company Bob surprises me with a `54 Dan-Dee Potato Chip
card of George Strickland.  Very COOL stuff =E2=93 Thanks Bob!!!

Don Rice makes a non-sport connection with many hits to an assortment of sets.
Don includes (2) Goudey Indian Gum cards, a `41 Uncle Sam card, a
Topps Sails & Rails card and (14) World on Wheels cards.  Also along
for the ride were (3) baseb all skeds for that still unorganized component
of my collection =E2=93 Thanks Don!!!

Doug Smith sends an annual greeting =E2=93 always great to hear from Doug!!!

Frank Thomas =E2=9Cthe original=E2=9D sent me a very unique Christmascard
with a baseb all on a tree as a X-mas ornament signed by Frank.
Very cool card indeed!!

I have a week or so off and I intend on spending some time answering the c all

Belated Christmas thanks goes out from the Pillion household.  Santa delivered
an early `gift' of a stomach virus on Christmas Eve.  This is the firstI've
felt like getting on the computer since then.

My secrete Santa was Joshua Levine.  Josh sends the first hit to my 1973 Topps
Team Checklist Set, a card that is near and dear to his heart, the Philadelphia
Phillies.  And to top that off he tosses in a 1934 (??) Diamond Matchbook
of Earl Adams of the Reds.  Made me feel a lot better.

Also over looked in the Christmas hustle and bustle was a Christmas card from
Randy Griffin and his family that included two hits to my 62 Topps set.

Sorry for the late thanks guys.  Hopefully I will be back up to full strength
in a day or two and will respond to some outstanding e-mails.  Hope everyone
had a Merry Christmas.

My good fortune this year was to have Rob Gioia II as my "Secret Santa".Rob
sent a humorous Christmas card that "triple dog dared" me to have a very
merry Christmas.

On top of that, I received 5 different Detroit Tiger cards including a Chuck
Dressing and Orlando Pena from the 60's. I remember them from my youth.
The final two cards were both boxing from the 50's. Very nice as I would
consider myself a boxing card collector right after baseball.

It was a very nice Christmas present.

Hello All,

The mystery is solved as Anthony Arbeeny spoke up to claim
responsibility for my "Secret Santa" gift. I just pulled the envelope
and on the back just below the Grand Hyatt return address Anthony wrote (in
microscopic letters) OBC SANTA. I did not see this so I did not wait
till 12/25/09 and opened the package a few weeks earlier not knowing that
the dozen hits to my `56 Davy Crockett set were to be enjoyed on Christmas
day. Thanks Anthony - these are great and as you mentioned the setis
much closer to completion now - THANKS SECRET SANTA ANT-MAN!!!!

This was sent with (54) assorted Baltimore Orioles postcards from

Carl Kogut wishes us a Merry Christmas with a X-mas nice card that also includes

Subject: Have Myself a Merry Little Christmas

Hello, OBC.  I've been "away" since November and I've missed being a more active
member, but I'm sure you all know how life has different seasons.  Thankfully,
this has been a positive busy season, rather than something more painful.

Meanwhile, OBC Christmas arrived and I successfully held off opening the puffy
from my OBC Santa until the night of the 25th, after the kids had dropped
from exhaustion and my wife was relaxing after a wonderful, long day.

Mr. Aaron "Santa" Shirley put together a package that was worth waiting almost
a month to open.  It contained 8 envelopes with instructions: "#1 Open First,"
"#2 Open Second, you get the idea" etc.  Well, it took me two envelopes,
but I DID get the idea: Aaron sent a chunk of cards from each of the eight
2009 MLB playoff teams!  He had me open them in ascending order of success,
which meant that in this magical year in which my favorite teams finished
1-2, I got to open a Phillies envelope and, finally, a Yankees envelope!
All told, Santa sent 48 cards, representing Topps years 56, 59, 60, 61,
63, 64, 66, 67, 69 and 75, and including 2 '54 Bowman Yankees, Gil Mcdougald
and Allie Reynolds!  Other highlights were '56 Mayo Smith Mgr, '59 Senators
Team Card, '64 Cards rookies, '64 Yankees Young Aces Al Downing and Jim
Bouton, and '75 Chris Chambliss and Berra/Campy 54 MVPs.  Twenty-four of the
hits were from 1964, fattening up one of my leanest Sixties sets, FIVE Yankees
hits to the 69 set, my furthest Sixties (i.e. my only 60's Wantlist),
and those two 54 Bowmans, presently my favorite set, knocked that quest down
to an imaginable 57!

Thank you, Shirley Claus!  If that beard was white, you might even look thepart!
That was a wonderful surprise and I really enjoyed the march, especially
anticipating that you saved my favorite team for last!

Now, for you purists out there (we are OBC, after all), you should be asking
yourself, "Hey, the Rockies made the playoffs!  There are no OLD BC's of the
Rockies!"  They did, and Kris Kringle's solution: Rocky-ies Colavito!  Yeah,
Aaron, I'm giving it to you; I laughed hard.  BTW, Rocky hit 42 homers
in '59, including 4 consecutive on June 1.

I'm glad I could at least celebrate Christmas with you all in our traditional
manner, and I enjoyed reading about some of your gifts.  I'm hoping to find
some level at which I can keep active, even if it's more limited than my
previous couple years.

Okay, in all seriousness, how does Lynn Miller DO it?  I've had some active(for
me) stretches this year, trying to spread around my Bowman joy a little,
managing a few set kills for folks, and taking advantage of the Newbies'
lists while they're still in good striking range for me.  But I've dropped
off the radar since my last Nicaragua trip in November, with only a cameoSanta
package to my credit.

How does Lynn Miller respond to this sudden, unexplained inactivity?  I'll tell

Lynn sent me forty-eight 1968 Topps cards.  Yeah, 48.  That would be prettydarned
good with any forty-eight cards.  But he stacked that stack with Hank
Aaron, Orlando Cepeda, Gaylord Perry, Ed Matthews, NL Batting Leaders with
Clemente, AL Batting Leaders Yaz, Frank Robbie and Kaline, Catfish Hunter,
Hoyt Wilhelm, Killebrew AS, and Morgan AS.  With that pile, he also included
three medium highs between 72 & 73.  Great stuff.  I'd be thrilled with
that package.  Lynn tossed in a 1975 rookie card of Keith Hernandez.  Sweet.
Is that all?  No.  In this envelope I found a 1969 Johnny Bench!  Goldang!

Do you think I'm done?  I'm not.

Lynn Miller hit the NUMBER ONE card on my Top Five Wantlist, a ROOKIE CARD OF
THURMAN LEE MUNSON!

Yes, Lynn, in answer to your note, these do help =E2=9Ca little.=E2=9D
They help my collection =E2=9Ca little,=E2=9D they help my morale
=E2=9Ca little,=E2=9D and they help me appreciate what an amazing group
OBC is, even =E2=9Ca little=E2=9D more than I did (which was already
a heckuva lot, by the way).

Thurman Munson Rookie Card!  Seriously!

More than anyone else, Lynn has demonstrated to me that OBC is not merely abunch
of guys with their collections; OBC is a group working together on all

My Vegas buddy and his wife Debbie welcomed my bride Joanne to the U.S. with an excellent home-cooked meal that despite Rich's warnings did not require a call to 911 or a stomach pump.  Debbie is a terrific cook and it was a wonderful gesture on their part.  Thanks Debbie and Rich for the super hospitality.  And in keeping with the OBC holiday season Rich and I exchanged some gifts.  Rich was out with the old and I was in with the new.  Old as in a vintage hit to the continual bombardment he as made on my '51 Topps Blueback list with "Old Country" Enos Slaughter.  Plus a newer addition to the Hank list of a still in the original package "Talking Baseball Cards" on a 33 1/3 vinyl record which was sold by the Smithsonsian Museum Shops for the princely sum of $1.25 at the time.  It describes the 715th HR.  It's the 3rd record in a series of 12 that highlights other baseball feats.  Very cool item.  I could only manage in return a small box of newer stuff
that I brought back from the Philippines for Rich.  Thanks good buddy for the super hits.  OBC is the Greatest.  Happy New Year, Lynn
