I ran into Mike Rich at the local Redford show yesterday and as usual, he greeted
with the typical OBC handshake.  And what handshake it was...  He handed
me a 69 Deckle Curt Flood, which would have been a killer, but it had already

Subject: pleasure of meeting Rick Lyons here in town at the a nice weekend meet-up

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Rick Lyons here in Las Vegasat
the Hilton.  Rick and I had a light breakfast and traded cardboard at the
table.  Rick presented me with a box containing (3) 1970 OPC, (6) 1970 Topps
Scratch-Offs, (5) 1974 Topps, (1) 1975 Topps, and (1) 1975 Topps Mini PLUS
362 UV cards to be addressed elsewhere.  After breakfast, Rick and I sat
down at the slots to try our luck.  My wife was nearby and lost no time in
informing us that she just won $104, so we decided to end our gambling and
stick to our cardboard.   All in all, it was a great visit and I hope wecan
do it again soon.  Many thanks to Rick for those neat cards.

Subject: got a BIG package on SUNDAY

My grandpa bid on and won a few items in the recent auction for my aunt Jerry's
cards.  That was fun, as he won some of the bigger quantity lots... heused
to collect team cards, so I thought maybe he was going to start back in
on collecting...

Anyway, what I had hoped would happen did... yesterday, as I was visiting, he
gave me back the 1963 and 1964 Topps cards he had won just a few weeks ago.
It totals 75 hits to those two sets, and probably 100 more upgrades.  I
haven't compared them yet, but I'm reasonably sure they will ALL be upgrades.

He also got some 1964 Topps coins, and he has made a nice display case for them.
Now he intends to give them to Michael (Jerry's son and his grandson).
A nice little reminder of his dad.  Michael never had any interest in the
cards, but I think something like this that he can display (with the Mantle,
Mays, Banks etc) from his dad's childhood, will be a nice touch.  I will
send a pic of it if I can get one, maybe next week when I visit.

Fun times.  Wonder what might be in today's mail?

Had some very kind fellas treat me to some vintage cardboard last week.

Mark Talbot sends out one of his treasured birthday cards to me, with a
sweet '49 Bowman of Walker Cooper tucked inside.  Turning 61 is freaky, and
not in a good way.  I'm one year from qualifying for early social security,
but my brain says, really, I'm only 45!  Yeah, right....Thanks, Mark!!

And Lynn Miller...what can you say about that guy?!  I can't reasonably
rendezvous with him when he passes through Puget Sound, so he sends ME some
'54 Topps cards?!  What?! Am I in the reverse universe, where down is up?
Lynn, hope you can recharge your batteries while in the Phillipenes --
you're probably going to have to break into your Phillipene warehouse for

The fall semester has been a busy one, and my getting sick with what may or may not have been the H1N1 flu made it even tougher. Regardless, I am back on my feet and wanted to get some trading going. I sent out some packages today and thought I should also get my wantlist up to snuff. With that, thanks are due over the last few weeks for some great cardboard, including:

Anthony Arbeeny sent two great lots of cardboard my way in the last month, with everything from a group of 14 lucky James Bond Moonraker cards/stickers, through a dozen vintage football hits, to an amazing 1970 Thurman Munson rookie card! Great stuff Double A! Thanks for thinking of me!

Bob Bannon sends a 1953 Bowman Al Dark upgrade -- a nice hit for a great set! Thanks Bob!

Gord Eillis amazed me with a dozen great hits to my 1980 OPC set -- all HOFers of possible future HOFers! Murray, Carlton, Winfield, Seaver and Fisk lead the way, filling some key holes in that binder! Thanks for the great hits Gord!

Brock Hattox ships four Exhibit cards my way, with two great Salutations (Lombardi and Higbe) and two 1962 Stat Backs (Hoak and Burdette)! Great stuff Brock -- thanks for the classics!

What can I say, it was a day that was hard to beat as the mailbox
held two OBC envelopes, which managed to almost totally wipeout the
late 1970s from my wantlists!

First, Randy Welk polishes off my 1977 Topps list by sending the last
two cards, Minosa RB and Steve Garvey. Randy also sends along 2 hits
to the dwindling 1979 Topps set. Thanks a ton Randy!

Then Lynn Miller (who had a SCP waiting in my mailbox just
yesterday!!!) brings the '76 Topps set within one of completion (with

I actually pulled my 1956 binder off the shelf today to see if I possibly had any of the white backs that Brock Hattox needs.  No such luck--all of mine were gray backs.
Then the mail got delivered and wouldn't you know, there was an puffy from Brock Hattox.  I think Brock told me awhile ago that we were kind of even--and I thought well not really but even being close had been a long time coming.  And now this--a surprise from down south.  I guess those spare 1967s were buring a hole in his dup box and Brock decided to send a few my way with a couple of extras.
Now my 1967 set is complete but as many of you know, my brothers and I cut some of our rookie cards in half so that we would have more players per team.  Brock is kind enough to send a couple of nice uncut rookie cards of the Red Sox and the Cards along with Yankee manager Ralph Houk.  Absolute upgrades.
But it was the two cards that came along with the upgrades that has me scratching my head on how I am going to catch up with Brock--only a SGC 30 T205 of Red Stocking Thomas Downey and a 1935 Diamond Star of Blondy Ryan.  Trust me I have some ideas on payback.

Subject: Thanks to Rich Niessen

Rich was kind of enough to meet me in Las Vegas then he became the fifth OBCer
I've met. Rich came to my hotel on saturday and he introduced me to hiswife
and we went to the coffee shop to sit and talk about life in general and
cards. We exchanged some cards he first gave me 400 count box full of baseball
and football I needed with a nice 51 blue back on top. Then asked me
if wanted some more football and he had 4 boxes probably 3000 cards so I now
have a new project going thru them and picking out a few  set to list. Then
we tried the slots for awhile but didn't make it big. Rich thank you for
the cards and your friendship we will probably do it again next year. Rick

Mark Talbot sent me a baseball card from 1952 1953 1954 1955 and 1956.  They
are great.  I think someone might have taken a couple fo them to war withthem
as they all have some special OBC quality to them.  These are the best.
Gair Allie batting .199. James Brady who did not play the year before and
had no experience in baseball. An Ed Bailey, Jim Pendleton and a 1952 Cliff
Mapes.  These are a lot of fun

of Ray Sadecki that got me searching forever on how to tell the differnce

Martial Law ( Marshall law) was in effect during a recent trip to the post office!

The fine Mr. West helped with the Maury Quest, sending 3 oddball Maury Wills
cards that I hadn't seen...( MVP for MDA, K-Mart 20th anniversary and a Topps
Collector Series from the mid-80's) Very "signable" cards of my bud Maury
for the next time I see him.

Marshall didn't stop there as he inserted on the other side of the sheet 3 from
1968 Burlap series including Boomer Scott...who led the 1967 Bosox in triples
and finished second in steals. The Boomer I met many years later wouldn't
have conjured up the speed demon image to say the least:)

Enjoy the holiday this week, and tell a Veteran thanks if you can.  My wife's
father was 19 years old when he fought his way ashore with the 2nd wave of
soldiers onto Omaha Beach.  He survived that and ended up in the Battle of
the Bulge.  He survived again, but did get shrapnel in his eye and shoulder.
He marched into Germany and saw, among many other things, some concentration
camps.  He finally came back to the US on the Queen Mary...chuck full
of soldiers.  He was a quiet hero, the stories stopped when he left us in
1995...but the old stories are still amazing.  God Bless America.

BRIAN BETZA asked recently if I would be willing to send some Pirates from my
collection in order to get some comparable Braves.  I sent him four Pirates
from 1953-56 and got a bunch of good stuff in return!  Check all this out:
1953 Topps x 4 including Boston Brave George Crowe, and Milwaukee Braves Del
Crandall, Murray Wall, and Gene Conley.  Did you know that at 6'8" Gene was
the tallest player in the league at the time, and was also a Boston Celtic?

1962 Topps series 2 for the green tint challenge.
1967 Topps x4
A total of 15 cards!!! Brian must really like the Pirates, and he knew I love
those old Braves!!!  It didn't hurt that he threw all these extras in above
and beyond what I was able to send him, but I was certainly glad to help
another guy's collection out!!!

Topps Football - which is only the third card I have from this set. I love
the Topps '66 FB design - almost exactly the same as the 55 Bowman baseball

Hi, OBC faithful. I am on a small bus crossing two Cascades mountain passesand
bound for Sea-Tac, where a team of us will fly to Nicaragua  to work with
House of Hope again. House of Hope helps women escape prostitution and develop
other ways to support themselves and their children. This will be my
5th trip there and this has become my time of year to go...which means it's
my time of year to set aside some things while I focus on this. I had hoped
to get the last few mailings filed and thanks sent before I left, but there
were just too many last-minute requirements om my time.
So I'll send accurate but very belated thanks when I return home, and meanwhile
I'll be vague but still grateful.

Thanks to LYNN MILLER & KEN PILLION, who have both taken it upon themselvesto
kick the heck out of my 75 wantlist. I'm down to about 30 now, after dozens
of hits from both "gentleman." Thanks, guys!

Mr. Arbeeny hits three wantlists and saves on postage by trimming
three of the cards - that guy is always thinking! Why someone would
need to trim a '48 Bowman is beyond me but I gotta say that the
corners on Eddie Joost are wicked sharp! Joost is  a favorite because
he played for the A's, because he has a double 'O' in the middle of
his name, and because he never saw a walk he wouldn't take. Also
arriving by Antmail are  a pair of wee '54s including Fred Haney and a
pair of high number '71s (untrimmed - how extravagant!) including Joe

card featuring TIGER Al Kaline.  Yes, once again I=E2=99m speechless
with this man=E2=99s generosity.

Kevin Martens puts a smile on my face with a SCP TIGER hit with a `57 Toppscard
of Duke Maas.  Way COOL!!!

Peter Mead has to keep the never-ending trade going by slipping me a SCP from
the `63 Jello set, none other than Yogi Berra.  Nice hit Peter =E2=93

Mike Rich and I connected at the local show two Sunday's agoand as isthe
regular custom cardboard went a flying.  In what seems like a reoccurring
theme here I receive a SCP from the `51 Topps Red-back set =E2=93
the Yankees catcher Yogi Berra.  That=E2=99s two tough Berra cards
in one week =E2=93 WOW!!!

Ed Schott all ows me to claim a waiver wire posting of (4) Sugar Daddy Footb
all cards with W all y Chambers, John Gilliam, Merlin Olsen and Steve Owens.
Ed also included (7) assorted TIGER and PISTON cards.  Thanks
so much Ed!!!

Aaron Shirley shipped out my auction winnings that knocked off some `60=E2=99s
syar FB cards with names like Unitas, Tarkington, Horning and others.
Aaron also worked out a deal so I landed a number of dupes to share
with others.  A nice group of Non-sports were also included with Beatles,
Man from Uncle and Monkees cards.  Thanks Aaron for giving usthe
opportunity to help out your aunt and grab some nice cardboard.

T.J. Valacak scours the dupe box and comes up with a `49 Bowman of Mickey Vernon,
a `68-69 OPC Hockey card of Parker MacDonald, a `69-70 OPC RED WING card
of Brian Conacher and a `70-71 OPC RED WING card of Tom Webster.

Mark Zentkovich supplies a surprise hit to my TIGER collection with a couple
game cards of some sort featuring Ty Cobb and Mickey Cochrane.  Also
along for the ride is a Mississippi Riverkings Sked and a `04 Topps Grudge

Like a few others on the group, I have been unable to post thanks or send out
packages recently.  I took the day off today and am hoping to get out a few
packages that have been sitting ehre since October.  I did get my e-mails
down to 250 behind.  Thanks are owed to fellow FOOT members who I saw ata
local show at the beginning of the month, Mike Mroz for a miscut card and
Mark Talbot for miscut, a 1981 English soccer 3 in 1 card and a 1949 LeafBoxing.
I beleive I am down to 10 in the set.  While I have had lists sent
to me, I was unable to read them.  I know who at least 5 cards are that Ineed,
as they are stars.  I did find time to e-mail Erik Greenwood about his
T-205 collection he is trading off for other prewar wants.  He sent me 5,
including Griffith and a Gray with no stats.  I am closing in on 40% of the
set and this is a target set for me.

We recently put new carpeting in the office, so all the cards (and some incoming mail) went away for awhile. Unpacking relocated these!

MIKE DIAMANTI sent a 2009 issue of Seattle's "Grand Salami," with 9-time All-Star Ichiro on the cover.

ERIK GREENWOOD send several oddballs, including a 1964 Willie Davis with advertising panel back, 2 minor league #5s, and 2 Twins postcards.

Subject: Thanks after an eventful weekend....

Thanks out this Monday morning to John Stamper for a neat pair of '59s and a

Getting an OBC package just rounded off one hell of a weekend for me. It started
off on Thursday night with me and a buddy attending a fantastic gig by
former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. After the gig, we called in at the
local casino where we played some roulette until 3am. I came out about $25

On Friday, I helped another friend move house.

Saturday saw Maureen and I (and 2 other friends) attend the Scotland vs Australia
rugby international in Edinburgh. Scotland won 9-8, the first time we've
beaten the Aussies in 27 years. Amazing game..great result, and atmosphere!
One thing marred it though. Five minutes before the half, I went out to
the beer concession stand to get a few refreshments before the rush. As I
turned from the bar with my tray of 4 pints, a guy lurched into me from behind
(for no reason...there was no one else near) and knocked my tray flying.
Of course, I had a few choice words to say. What I didn't expect was his
response. He reared back and threw a punch at me. Fortunately, he was obviously
impaired a bit and missed. Before he could reset, the security guys were
all over him. The bar staff saw the whole thing happen and very kindlyfilled
up a fresh tray for me. This is NOT the kind of thing you expect tohappen
at a rugby match. All the violence usually occurs on the
field and people are very decent off it.

On Sunday, Maureen and I were just about 150 yards behind a major 3 car pile-up
in Glasgow. A car travelling in the opposite direction blew a tire andwent
into a spin, right into the path of a vehicle just ahead of us, whichtook
the brunt of the collision head on. The car continued to spin across the
street, clipping the front wing of another car before comingto a halt
with the drivers side door pinned against a fence. The driver of that carhad
a broken shoulder and was trapped in her vehicle for some time before she
could be extracted. The young girl who was in the car thattook the head-on
smack staggered out of her car, which had ended up right in themiddle
of the 4-lane road. She was in severe shock and the dashboard had banged
her knee pretty good. She was very disoriented. We got her into our car out
of the rain until the emergency services arrived. Her car was a total write-off.
She was very lucky not to have been more severely injured
(airbags can be VERY useful). We finally got back on our way about an hourlater.
It wasn't until then that we began to realise that if the timing ofevents
had been altered by just a few seconds, that could easily have beenus.

That was quite a ramble, but it was quite a weekend!!

What a way to start off my Thanksgiving week.  Two OBC envelopes were in the
mailbox today.  BOB DONALDSON sends over a three pack for the 1974 Kelloggs
set.  Amos Otis, Ron Hunt and Ted Simmons have been added to the collection.
Bob also adds a Babe Ruth postcard, which is SOOOO cool!  I love the Babe.

The second envelope comes from ANDY COOK.  Andy surprises me with two well loved
hits to my 1952 Topps set.   Gene Beardon looks as though someone mayhave
tried to light him on fire.  Peanut Lowrey comes with the "SS" added to
the front of the card.  Both cards are great additions to my collection.I
really don't know why I waited so long to add this set to my collection.
Those high numbers might be on my list for a few decades, but these 52 Topps
are just SWEET!  Thank you Andy, the cards are much appreciated.

Gents, thank you for your generosity.   OBC - there really isn't anything like
our group anywhere.

RICHARD NIESSEN and I have been trading quite a few emails over the last few
weeks, and I've learned quite a bit about his collecting and his character.
Seems like a pretty cool guy to me!  I finally put a box out to him yesterday
and a sizable package arrived from him the same day!  Newer stuff, but
some great names including Aaron, Spahn, Winfield, Carew, Dawson, Brett,McCovey,
Sutton, Campanella, Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg!  125 cards
in all, thanks RICH!

KEN PILLION also sent quite the package, with a 1959 Johnny Podres, 1969 Juan
Marichal, four 1971 Topps coins, SIXTY (wow) upgrades for my 1975 Topps set,
and a hefty stack of newer stuff to come along with it.  Thanks, KEN!

I'm really getting to know some of you guys lately.  It's been a real treat.
OBC is awesome and I count it a great privilege to be a part of such a group.

Gord Ellis amazed me this week with an envelope from north of the border that
was stuffed like a clown car! Thirty Rowan and Martin=92s Laugh-in cardsstart
the show (and the laughter), followed by nine Moonraker stickers, four
Battlestar Galactica stickers, three OPC Fisk cards, three more uv Fisk cards,
two 55 Bowman football cards, two 53 Johnston Cookies hits, three 75-76
Topps hockey cards, seven 1980 OPC all-stars and HOFers, and a SCP fromthe
1953 Topps license plate set (Switzerland)! All that was in one standard
envelope! How he did it, I will never know, but I sure am glad that he did!

Brock Hattox passed along two of the 67 Topps high numbers he had in his possession

Rick Lyons sends a nine pack of gridiron greats, including 5 76 Topps and 477
Fleer.  I used to love those Fleer cards when I was a kid.

Bob Donaldson sends 4 cereal cards - 1 74 and 3 76 Kellogss, including Catfish
Hunter.  He also included a postcard of Babe Ruth for good measure.

I thought I had paid a little back to Ed Schott last week when I found him a
couple of 65 hits and Baltimore heroes.  So how does he repay me???  By putting
me wayyyyy back in the hole with an envelope stuffed with 2 61 Topps(my
favorite set) semis, one each 55, 57, 58 Topps, and two each 68 and 71Topps,
including Drysdale and McLain.  Wowww!!!

The mailman today borught me something to be truly thankful for......an astounding package of cards from Mike Rich!

Mike definitely seems to be doing the rounds of late, and I'm grateful that he included Glasgow in his mailings. So, what's in the envelope?

It starts off with 3 cards from my Top 30 list - a 1962T Stamp Norm Cash, a 65/66T #125 Detroit Red Wings Team card, and a 1971T #150 Gale Sayers (leaving only the Bradshaw RC to complete that set!). Next to sustain damage were my hockey lists - a 69/70OPC, a 69/70T(Hodge), 5 x 70/71Ts including Cheevers, Beliveau, and the Perrault RC, 4 x 71/72OPC including Tony E, a 72/73OPC Gary Unger...........and a 72/73T Bobby Orr!!! Finally - just for good measure - there were 5 UV Barry Sanders cards. A truly AMAZING group of cards, which I'm VERY happy to be adding to my collection!

Thanks to Bob Donaldson for a pair of 74 Kellogs "3d" cards. I love
these sets and I am always excited when I find some. Bob sends me Bill
SInger and Dave May. Singer had just won 20 games for the Angels after
being traded from the Dodgers. Interesting that the card mentions
Singer's arm problems as a Dodger and then in his first year as an
Angel he pitches 316 innings. I think I might go look up his next

It's not often these days that I can say that I have knocked off four
numbers from a '60s wantlist in one fell swoop, but thanks to Richard  Dingman,
this is one of those days. In completion of a recent deal, Richard  sends me
Chuck Schilling, Dallas Green, the L.A. Dodgers, and Lindy McDaniel  from
the '64 set.

The old timer Sox fans will remember that Schilling the first, as I like to
call him, joined the Sox along with another rookie named Yastrzemski in
1961.  Chuck did not have Yaz's bat (nor Curt's arm for that matter), but he
and Yaz  represented a Sox youth movement after Teddy Ballgame left the yard
and I  entered high school. Ah the memories. Those were the days when we
could walk  into Fenway and get first row box seats for just a few bucks, but I

All I can say is wow. WOW! Big thanks go out
to GORD ELLIS for one of the more complex OBC mailings I've received in
a long, long time. Gord sends 50+ cards from 14 different sets
encompassing 5 different genre [hockey (3 sets),  baseball (1),
football (1), hoops (1), and nonsport (8)]. Killer status is
achieved twice, as Gord sends the final hits to my 1964 Topps Beatles
B&W set, as well as the 1972 Fleer Globetrotters hoops set. Other
notable hits include a 1953 Johnston Cookies Brave and two HOF goalies
from 1959-60 Topps Hockey, Glenn Hall & Gump Worsley. And so much

Cannot believe what I received this weeks mail but then when OBC is in the
mix every day is a good feel day.  MIKE RICH start off the week by  sending
a big package of cards including a high number 52 Topps in Clem Labine,
not to be outdone he continues by knocking my 1973 Topps football set from 121
down to 63, and he still wasn't done he sends along 3 1974-5 Topps hockey
all  Black Hawks which were my Hockey team growing up.   This is the first
time any one has hit that set  because that set has in the box  and  until I
started getting organized 35 years after I bought them found out I was  20
cards short of the full set I thought I bought.   Thanks Mike for  the
wonderful gift.

While it wasn't a trade, OBC dealer KURT TOURDOT caoes through with a 52
NUxhall and the Black star Variation of Frank Campos alond with a 66 Topps of
Cesar Tovar for my Twins set.

RANDY JOHNSON who is thinking of becoming an OBC member sends me 4 1960
Topps upgrades.  To be not mistaken for the other Randy Johnson he state he
is a couple inches shorter and he has a 50 ft curve ball to the pitcher
100mph  fastball.  If he decided to send an application in I recommend him as a
great person to trade with although he currently only seeems to be working
on  Twins oddball stuff but maybe his mentor can get him to expand.

Last but not least  OBC Santa Richard Labs sends me my Do open till
Chistmas package.  I havent even got the tree out yet so until then it will  set
on my dest getting wet as I drowl on it.  Thanks Richard.

Met Richard Dingman at the Westchester show today. Richard was kind enough
to give me 2 66 Toppers for the dupes box.
The show was pretty good I thought. I was able to finish off both a 1971
and 1970 Topps set for the kids.

My assessment of card costs and the market in general based on several
conversations I had with dealers was that the market traffic is pretty good.
However, the cash seems to be going to lessor expensive cards and more
expensive  cards prices are coming down.
