Then, of course, comes the patented part which as everyone in OBC is familiar and which in this case includes German cards picturing a flag or crest, people and goods floating on log barges, a marsh, a cabin in the snow, a man with a load of logs in a canoe and a couple of elk, or moose? Mike also allowed me to skim 50+ OPC hockey cards from his dupe box and even slipped me a `61 Topps Frank Robinson AS card and a couple `68 Atlantic Oil cards (Callison & Yaz). Thanks Mike!!! Mac Wubben handed me a SCP at the swap - a Polar Bear back T-206 card of Bradley of Cleveland. It was great to see you and spend time at the ball-game Mac - Thanks!!!! Marshall West handed me an envelope with a half dozen food issues taht will have to be discussed elsewhere. I really did some damage to the list for `52 this weekend and this gets it down just one more. I will soon be needing only the HI number (like so many who have attempted this set). Thanks Spike for the cardboard and making the arrangements for the hotel accommodations. It was great spending some time with you. Larry Gersbach slipped me a `50 Bowman SCP of Wayne Terwilliger, great to see you again after a few years. Very generous of you my friend. John Stamper allowed me to pick out a `54 Bowman variation of Sam Mele from his "show treasures" and also gave me a UV panel to me mentioned elsewhere. Ron Perry shared some of his show finds with me and passed over a Luke Appling and Ted Kluzewski Exhibit card and a couple `71-72 Topps Hockey Booklets, just Danny Grant and Bobby Hull. As always it was great to see you again Ron!!! John Scott Gray pointed me in the direction of his dupe box at the swap where I snagged up some Post Cereal TIGERS and a `52 Berk Ross card (Jensen). It was great to finally meet your wife JSG and spend some time with the both of you. Finally, T.J. Valacek finds a `50 Bowman Football card (Thomas), (4) `69-70 OPC Hockey card (MacGregor, Marshall, Watson and Sather), a `70-71 OPC Hockey card (Cashman), a `73-74 OPC WHA Hockey card (Daley), a `68 OPC Baseball card (Hunt), a `77 Topps Cloth Sticker (Carlton) and a stack of shiny stuff described elsewhere. I know that there was other stuff brought to the swap by other guys but I just never got a chance to look through most of the boxes. There is just never enough time when we all get together. I'm completely floored Richard - Thanks so much. I looked all over the National for `66 HI numbers w/no luck and now I get to knock a couple off thanks to your help - TOO COOL!!! Ed Schott connects with a couple of oddball cards from the 1960's with a `65 Topps Ugly (transfers) of John Roseboro and a `66 Topps Rub-off of Bob Bruce. Everyone knows how much I enjoy these oddball issues so thanks for thinking of me Ed. Finally, Frank Thomas "The Original" sends me some cardboard. That's right, I recently sent Frank some Topps cards from the current year and sent him my want list. Frank responded today by sending me (5) UV insert cards from this year writing me that he took my want list to the local card shop to find cards for me. Frank also indicated that he has passed my list on to others who have contacted him to help him fill out his sets. This is the first time I have received anything other than a nice thank you letter from Frank and shows me exactly why he has held membership in this fine club. He has the OBC spirit!!! I have posted Frank's list as I know it on my UV webpage and encourage anyone who wishes to send Frank material he needs to do so. I keep it as up to date as I can and can only update it when Frank sends me an update. I'd like to thank once again Rick, Ed and Frank for their assistance. You guys are GREAT!!! BE WELL!!! My wife and daughter accompanied me to Chi-town since they missed out on a planned visit to join me at the end of a business trip in March, due to a severe blizzard. We made it downtown about 9:45, where I dropped them off for a day of shopping and sightseeing, so I then headed to Rosemont to do some "shopping" of my own. Once arriving at the show, I contacted Sal, who came to my rescue along with Kent, to get me access into the show. I also met up briefly with Mark and Mike Rich before the group headed to Wrigley. Once inside, I felt a bit overwhelmed, but had a blast hitting as many OBC-friendly dealers that I could. I spent most of the afternoon with TJ Valacak, who helped to steer me towards a few other great deals. I need to thank TJ, Mike Rich, Gersh, Mark Talbot, Sal Domino and Kent for handing me some great packages. Gersh totally surprised me by sliding in a super-sharp 71 Garvey. Also at the swap, I obtained a couple of dealer scum T206's from Mike Rich, which I quickly learned changed my status from "owning a type card" to "collecting the set". I had to work in Cleveland yesterday. On the way home, I called John McLaughlin to see if he was around. I got his voice mail. Just after I got off the turnpike, he called me back, and I told him I was driving by, but had just missed him. On the contrary, the next exit was his, and he talked me in (cell phones are a marvelous thing somtimes) and 8 minutes later I was at his house. He mentioned that he was sorry he had not made it up to the Detroit area for any of the FOOT gatherings. He then said he had put something away for me, and out pops a 1936 Who's Who with Tiger Hank Greenberg on the cover! Wow, I just wanted a rest stop on the way home, and now I have a Who's Who. His wife then invites me to join them for dinner. I had already eaten on the road, so I only had a little meatloaf and a couple of helpings of potatoes. John also graced me with a 1950 Royal Dessert card, which turns out to be the first variation I have in the set. I now have 14 A & 14B. OBC dealers Kurt Tourdot, Mike Sandles and I think even JD Heckathorn for donating cards for the group swap, as well as Kurt and JD for helping sponsor the food for the swap. Marshall West for a Venezuelan hit (I also picked up a pair of these over the weekend). Ron Perry for a 1960 Nu Card Hi Lite. Spike for letting us split his room on Friday and Saturday and picking up a 1970 Tyco Super Ball for me. Mike Mroz for letting me take the box of UV BB marbles that I will eventually be able to ID, that he got from Mike Sandles in Detroit a few weeks ago. Mac Wubben for a huge T-205 hit of HOF Eddie Collins - mouth closed Gersh for doing an arranged swap with me. I ended up getting a Dan Dee Strickland; Red Hearts Erskine and McMillan; 1949 Bowman BB #18 181 198 209; and a 1950 Bowman BB #246 with copyright line variation. I was able to get a group of other 1949 Bowman hi #s, but only 1 other Red TJ - 2- 1969 Topps Stamp Books with stamps, a 1977 Topps Glassy Hockey card and some 1984 OPC BB. John Scott Gray for letting snitch his stack of 1969 Atlantic Oil cards so that I may pursue my insane quest for the different back versions. There are a few dupes that I will try and check lists on John's behalf. I added to the stack with some I picked up at the show also. I apologize if I gave credit to the wrong person or if I missed giving thanks to anyone. I did see Gary Mandell, who picked up a bunch Coke caps, and I did not get any at the show at all; Mike Wierzbicki, John Leroux and for a minute, George Vrechek. I never did see Tim Newcomb. Another fantastic time at the National. Hope to see even more of you next year in Cleveland. Anyone know the dates yet??? I'm a guy who is unapologetically enthusiastic about cards (I mean,
what the heck are we doing in this group otherwise?). DON RICE just
sent me a package that nearly rivaled what I got from John Stamper
when he shopped for me at the National. In OBC, you can get cards by
buying them or you can just get cards! How amazing is that?

Don hit 16 off my 1961 Topps list, led by Kluszewski. Next there was
a 1970 Craig Nettles, core of my beloved Bronx Zoo Yanks, followed by
twenty-nine shots to my 1971 Topps list with a plethora of HOFers and
stars-Kaline, Gibson, Fergie, Morgan, Perry, Phil Niekro, McCovey,
Bobby Bonds,Maury Wills--followed by #1 of the 1976 Topps, the
Hammer's RBI record-breaker. But that's still not all. His capper
was three 1977 Topps: Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, and K Leaders, meaning
Tom Terrific and Nolan Ryan on the same card!

I just kept gasping. I love all these guys (okay, Rose is a little
different but I still admire his abilities). Don, thanks so much for
this! I feel deeply (and happily) in your debt and hope to find a way
out of that hole soon.

Wow. Seriously.

Subject: To Bob Donaldson

Picked up the mail from the box today and had a puffy with my return address label on it. But addressed to me. Huh? Well of course looking a little further at the postmark from Lincoln MA I knew immediately that Bob had reused the puffy I had recently sent him. Way to save those trees Bob, got to remember that!! So inside is a note saying he couldn't find anything on my list (don't worry Bob, I don't) and thought I might like to see a young Hank Aaron. It's a CD of Game 3 of the 1957 WS. This is way better than finding something on my list!!!! I'll just pass on what I said to Bob.
"Actually anything Hank related is more than welcome as you know. There
are many items I suppose that can't be listed. Anyway this is the
Series that made me a lifelong Braves and Aaron fan. I remember it
well, was 10 years old at the time. I had been fascinated with
baseball for a few years already. My grandfather used to take me to
old Connie Mack Stadium in Philly to watch Robin Roberts, Richie Ashburn and the rest of the gang. But when the Braves took the Yankees in the
'57 WS and with the incredible year that Hank had, I was hooked on
them. Watching this brings back some very, very fond memories.
Probably more than any card or publication could. You really don't
know how much I appreciate this particular item. Now I'm going to have
to find the other games, I'm sure they are out there somewhere now." This is definitely an item that brings back the days when we really cherished baseball and cards. Not that we still don't but there's nothing that compares to the childhood wonderment of it all. Guess that's why we are all still children at heart. Great item Bob, you done good my friend, many, many thanks. Only in OBC, Lynn

Subject: In Cardboard Heaven!!!

Hello All,

Just a few days ago we returned home from vacation and there was some cardboard waiting for me when I returned. Also in the past few days a few more items have reached SE Michigan so allow me to thank:

Lynn Miller sends me a SCP with a TIGER card (to be discussed elsewhere) - Thanks Lynn!!!

Chuck Paris who accepts (10) T-206 back variations from me and slips me (15) T-206 cards in return fire. Chuck sent Frank Arellanes #8, Neal Ball (Clev) #12, George Bell (hands over head) #20, Donnie Bush #47, Hal Chase (throwing, dark cap) #61, Tom Downey (fielding) #107, Jimmy Dygert #116, George Mullen #258, Jack Quinn #297, Cy Seymour (pitching) #319, Bill Sweeney (Braves) #349, Ed Willett #376, Jimmy Burke #403, Joshua Clark #410 and George Henry Smith #469. I now have a total of (53) different T-206 cards - heys that's 5% of what Chuck has (but it's great to me). What a pleasure Chuck!!!

Frank Thomas "The Original" sends me a 4 pack of shiny cards - but everyone should know that good old Frank is doing well and actively trading cardboard. He did mention to me that an OBC'er (I think that would be Spike) had sent him a `52 Topps Joe Black (a rare HI number) that he was truly happy about. Frank does not use a computer but he rattles off the snail mail. I have enjoyed our recent correspondences.

And a thanks out there to Rick Lyons who gave me a phone call just a few minutes ago. Always nice to talk to an OBC'er for the first time. I hope to finally get caught up on emails tonight and get some stuff out in the mail. BE WELL!!!

I recently started the Conlon set and have found myself taking the timeto
read the back of the cards. Those cards are interesting to collect. Seeing
the old time uniforms and equipment made me want to watch a game fromyesteryear.
I don't mean a vintage clip of Babe waving to the crowd but Iwant
an entire game if one exist. What is the oldest game that anyone knows
of that is on video and where might we find it.

Thanks for the help on the Conlon set. I guess that I'll watch Eight Men
Out to get my old baseball fix.

Take Care!

Hello All,

It is time for the bi-annual membership poll. All active members are required to respond to this poll to remain on the active roster. You have 3 choices and you may respond:

YES - Please keep me on the active roster of OBC.

NO - I do not wish to be active, please place me on the inactive list.

NO - I am leaving OBC, please remove me from the group.

I will keep the poll open for 2 weeks until August 10, 2008 which should be ample time for all active members to respond. All member who do not respond will be placed on the inactive list by default. It is not necessary for inactive members to respond but if you wish to do so it is always nice to hear from you. Remember, if you wish to move from the inactive list to the active roster then it is as simple as making a request of the OBCAC.

All active members please RESPOND to this email - BE WELL!!!

A small bit of thanks is owed to MIKE MROZ who hits my 75 mini set with
a lucky 13. Included in the pack is HOFer Rollie Fingers. As many of
you know I am a teacher and I work with students with behavior
disorders. A few years ago, one of my students thought the handle bar
mustache was just hilarious. I "introduced " him to Rollie, who he
had never previously heard of. Throughout the semester, we would
incorporate Rollie into lessons. He even wrote him a letter. No
return fire, but Rollie was an inspiration. With these kids, anytime
you can get them excited about something academic, such as writing, you
have to take advantage.

Hello All,
I received a couple packages today from OBC traders that were simply outstanding. Thanks to John Stamper and Rick Lyons for the cardboard goodies.
John sends a "dealer scum" payment and sends a SCP from the `54 Bowman set with one of those pesky variations. I now have both versions of the Owen Friend card thanks to the generosity of John!!!
Rick and I are working out a deal that is unique to OBC. Rick is very close on some OPC sets and I offered to liberate some of the singles from my collection to help him (this does not happen often in other group, but it's more commonplace here). Rick sends me a stack of OPC cards in an effort to make it easy for me to send off my singles, let me tell you HE DID. Rick sent me (9) `66 OPC card w/Cepeda, (2) `67 OPC card w/ Maris, a `72 OPC (Palmer), (7) `73 OPC w/ Gossage, Hunter, Stargell, and Evans, (3) `74 OPC w/Cash, and (2) `75 OPC w/Rose and the Ryan Highlight card. I have a nice return grouping all ready to go for you Rick - Thanks for this grouping. (only 10 `73's and 7 `75's remain and `66 is down to 22).
So thanks to this dynamic duo and all in this fine group - BE WELL!!!

In the last several weeks I have received some great stuff and wanted
to give thaks to those responsible.

Mark Talbot started things off with a great package of dealer scum.
In addition to that he added a couple of hits to other lists which
were greatly appreciated.

Dan Austin initiated a huge deal sending about 20 1952 Topps cards
along with about that many 1950 Bowman cards many of which were high
numbers. Thanks so much.

Ray Luurs found some very tough to find 1969 Topps stamps and hit my
small list with 4 hits knocking down my list to about 15 players.

Thanks guys!!!

OBCers --

Thanks go out to Ed Schott and Grant Rainsley for sending my daughter, Erika, a bunch of animal cards for her budding collection! I'm not home right now, as I had to fly a plane out of harm's way for Tropical Storm Fay, but she called to let me know she had some great surprises in the mail today, so I'm assuming it was from Ed and Grant. Thanks guys - she was quite excited!

I was more pleased than she was, because Fay didn't do anything of note in the Panhandle down my way. My wife always loves it when the guys evacuate the planes and go stay in some hotel in Dallas, Little Rock or whereever, drinking beer while they ride out the storm. It's especially rough on the ones who have husbands (or wives) deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Military members get kudos quite often, but the spouses are the true MVPs of the families...

Take Care,

Just got back from vacation and found-

A BILL ASHTON envelope with 2 '52 Bowmans.

A TJ VALACAK envelope with an amazing fitak-like assortment of cards: 6 "heritage"
reprints (including one of my all-time favorites Yogi Berra), 3-63's,
and 2 basketball skeds.

And finally a JOHN STAMPER "exploration" special of 2 '52 Look 'N See's of good
old Columbus and Henry Hudson.

This rest of this thanks is not baseball-oriented, but if you are a Westernmovie
fan (and I'm guessing by our ages that most of you are), then read on.
I just returned from the 2008 Western Legends Roundup week in Kanab, Utah
(the site of many, many 1940's and 1950's cowboy movies). I received autographs

Hugh O'Brian (he was TV's Wyatt Earp- for $20, he provided his own photo and
autograph). He was very cranky with me when I produced my own photo card.
 He still wanted $20!

Clint Walker (TV's Cheyenne Bodie) Same thing, a photo with autograph for $20.
Again I provided my own photo, and he told me since I was the first in
line for his autograph, mine was free. He talked to me for a long time...a
super, super nice guy. And still a big guy. And he loved it when I told
him my name...he thought it was a cool cowboy name.

My new lesser known autograph friends are Ed Faulkner (appeared in several John
Wayne films and the TV show Wagon Train) and Lisa Montell who appearedin
numerous TV cowboy shows (she was, and still is, a beautiful lady...go ahead
and google her name for proof). Lots of Western music, barn dancing,
vendors, a parade, tour buses to the Gunsmoke set (yes, the LongBranch Saloon
is still there, but just barely) and The Outlaw Josey Wales movie set.I
thought Chicago was fun, but this was a very close second place.

Thanks for reading this far, and thanks again to BILL, TJ, and JOHN!

and will continue to be so in my collection. Thanks for these, Linda,
and for flowers, castles, a lightouse, angel fighting demon, and a
German card reproducing the painting Judengasse in Amsterdam, by Max
Liebermann, in 1884. My art education continues!

RICHARD LABS slams my 69 Topps set with seven hits and my 70 Topps
with THIRTY-SIX! Thanks, Richard. Some of these cards had all their
corners sharp and intact and even had what I believe is called
"original gloss," (though I don't see much of it in my collection).
Sparky Lyle, Royals Rookies, and managers Gene Mauch and Red
Schoendienst headline this puffy.
Thanks so much, Richard, for the terrific cards!

Linda sent the German tobacco card featuring the painting "The Bookworm" byKarl
Spitzweg. I put the card in a soft sleeve just the right size, and now
use it as my primary bookmark. What a great bookmark!

Linda also hits my "44" collection with a Topps Heritage Moises Alou, a Bowman
Heritage Bobby Abreu, and a Topps American Pie card of D-Day. As it says
on the back of the card, D-Day was June 6, 1944 - just four months before
I was born.

Linda rounds out the package with a couple of German cards with a Wild Westtheme.
Both cards have a paragraph or two on the back. My German is getting
pretty rusty, but it is fun translating the cards. I guess I'll have to
get on eBay and look for some more of these.

Thanks Linda, you have sent me a lot more than cardboard!

James sends along a #4 the common NO Name on front version, #58 tough
gray back (I need a ton of the low number gray backs) and an even
tougher #147 hi number. I have had a very tough time getting 49 Bowmn
high numbers, and only recently got that list lower than the 52 Topps
hi #s. Anyone have any 49 hi numbers to swap (I picked up a few dupes
at the National) or even some gray back low numbers (I would have to
find something to swap for these) it would be appreciated. This has
been a targetted set this year and still has a LONG way to go. James
also included a 1963 Topps Bob Gibson towards my project to help my
buddy Rocky that I owe a lot to. The packge was sent in part using a
Roy Campanella stamp on the envelope. Speaking of Campanella, anyone
willing to swap me a 1949 Bowman #84 Campy for a 1958 Topps #150

aseason where he missed so many games. Great hit Linda. I am really
loving this 59 Fleer set. Linda also hits a few of my train sets, as
well as adding hits to three different uv sets. The Elvis card was
very cool, as my parents were over today watching our son. My mom is
still in love with Elvis, so she got a real kick out of that card, and
I was able to let my dad have a peek at my newest additions to my train
