My land line was down at the house and since I still use dial up (I know I need to move into the 21st century soon), I had no computer access for 3 days. That did not stop the mail, UPS, the airlines or local gatherings from adding to the colection. Led by Fitak attack including the counterfeit Trade Dollar and accompanied by the usual assortment of oddball non-sport and/or UV cards were a few hits including a 1980 Laughlin 300/400/5000 card, a hit to the 1976 Twinkee set, a 1976 Shakey and couple UV hits. Mark Talbot called and let me know Peter Mead was coming to town and we thought we could get together on Wednesday nite. Mark and I met up at the local Wednesday show, which has deteriorated to such an extent I only go to 1 dealer's table (Harol, Mark's fav) where I picked up a 63 Fleer Spahn, 62 & 64 Topps Berra, plus a bunch of hits to my 1980's Fleer Basketball. I now need 17 cards to complete 6 sets, but 7 of them are Jordan's and I think the rest are all HOFers (or will be) also. Mark picks me up and hands me a small packet. I waited until I got home to look at and in addition to a World Series card of my HOMer (Willie Horton), a set killer of my 1989 Swell Bb Great (Mark had given me a set minus Carlton a couple of years ago and now he finishes the set!) were 9 Churchman Boxing cards that were in Gem Mint condition. As I was looking at them I was amazed these were not reprints because they were so nice. As I put them in the binder (one of the few sets I keep in a binder) I finally noticed the reprint info. I had to laugh at myself for not noticing this Mark and I met up with Peter Mead who had a pair of tickets to the Champions Club for the Tigers game that nite. After sneaking me in on my cheap ticket, we gorged ourselves on the buffet and watched Justin Verlander pitch his best game of the year in beating the White Sox. Peter handed us some cards during the game including a pair of 1954 Johnston Cookies for me, including a backless mathews. Peter has mainly built my set of these and has been on me to move them from my have list to a wantlist, but I am still only at 16 of 35 cards, so i need 2 more to move it (hint hint). great catching up with Peter again and catching a great nite at the game with Mark. Even small OBC gatherings are a treat. Yesterday's mail brought a large package from Rob Fitts. I had sent Rob a bunch of his treasured Phillies cards and he returned 40+ type cards of Japanese issues. Adding those to my 4 type Cuban cards, plus my assorted Venezuelan cards, English Soccer cards, a few Eurpoean (Bulgaria/Germany?) 1930s ? Hockey cards, 1977 Topps Mexican FB, Italy and Belgium Sportscaster cards and of course all my Canadian issues and my collection is getting more international all the time. Still the fine traders of this group continue to send me items to brighten my spirits and remind me of what a great group of individuals we have in this fine group. So allow me to thank: Brock Hattox slips me (3) Hostess panels with (2) from `77 and (1) from `79 featuring Robin Yount and TIGER Rusty Staub. Always nice to get some of these in from time to time - Thanks Brock!!! Kevin Martens follows up on some `70's "oddball" Mets cards I sent him with a couple cards that I needed from last years Topps premium sets. An `07 Topps Heritage card of Scott Kazmir and an `07 Topps A&G card of Joe Torre. These two sets have been a bear to put away so any help I can get is much appreciated - Thanks Kevin. Peter Mead who made a business trip to Mo-Town last week and treated me to a TIGER game with seats in the Champions Club that he got from his company. While enjoying a lavish food spread in this luxury of luxury suites Peter slipped me some cardboard enjoyment to continue the "never-ending trade" in person. A T-206 card of George Stone of the St.Louis Browns, a `52 Bowman of Red Schoendienst, a `54 Johnsons Cookiees card of George Metkovich and a `66 Topps HI number White Sox RC were all passed along courtesy of Peter. The cards were great but spending the evening with Peter took the cake (well actually we ate all of that as well, but you know what I mean). It was my 1st time in the Champion Club and that was quite nice as well, not to mention the Verlander 4 hitter and TIGER victory. Great to see you old friend. Ed Pike allows me to grab a SCP from the `53 Topps set with Yankee 3rd baseman Gil McDougald which I have been looking for way too long. Thanks for the Baseball as America brochure from the Oakland Museum of California (the same exhibit was at Greenfield Village here in Dearborn) - way too cool!!! Finally, Mike Rich who joined Peter Mead and myself for the game last week clobbered my want list as we got together for a mini-FOOT gathering last Wednesday. Mike passes me a puffy with (5) `61 Fleer Football (Dupre, Dugan, Kramer, Hart & Reifsnyder), (4) `61 Topps Football (McIlhenny, Arnett, Powell & Youngman), a `64 Philly football of Jim Marshall and a `66 Topps football card of Jack Spikes, (2) `65 Topps Hockey cards of Billy Reay & Dick Duff, (2) `71 Fleer Globetrotter cards with Meadowlark Lemon and Jerry Venable, (2) `55 Topps Double-headers with Otriz/Bolling & Robins/Portocarrero, a `58 Topps Tellow letter variation of Gil McDougald, a `62 Candian Post card of Ed Bailey, a `63 Jello of Curt Flood and to go above and beyond a `54 Red Heart card of Duke Snider. Love the card, Bill! In addition, I also received a rare hit to my 1949 Bowman set,of Aaron Robinson. Nice hits in great shape, thanks Bill! MIKE DIAMANTI, who sent in a very nice SCP of fellow New Orleanian Howard Pollet from the 1953 Topps set. We've actually been talking a lot about Howard lately. His nephew is my parishioner, and my pastor and mentor played baseball against him here in NO in the 1930's and early 1940's (I hit him like a drum, Msgr. says!). Thanks Mike for the nice card! Many of the old-timers in this group know that my eBay id and my previous Internet account was named "pb1940", standing for my favorite set of all time, 1940 Play Ball. The dark sepia tones, current and former baseball legends, nicknames in quotes, pre-war jargon, and ornate card borders with old-time baseball equipment drawings combine to make what is obviously the most beautiful set of baseball cards ever produced. I am serious about that. One of my superstitious rituals when watching the University of Kentucky basketball team play in the NCAA tournament is to shuffle through the 1940 Play Ball cards over and over when they need a scoring boost. Bill Ashton sent me two from my want list, Gene Moore and "Hy"-number (209) "Hy" Vandenberg. I only need about 75 more, but it has always been my goal to complete this set before I kick the bucket. These two cards were the first actual progress I've made on it in the past three or four years. They were so elusive because Moore is a Brooklyn Dodger, and Vandenberg is a New York Giant - two very popular teams in this area of the country. While I'm trying to finish the set in generally VG/Ex condition, the two cards Bill sent me were a step or two nicer than the rest of the bunch. Thanks so much!
