Sunday night I was pumped up for opening day, and since my mets were down in florida i was dying to get to a game, Yankees were sold out so i figured i would take a chance and check out mlb.com well I went to the Orioles web site and saw thy had tickets....so I called Big Ed Schott he said he was already going and what section he was in...I bought my ticket very close to his seat. We met up and Ed instantly noticed me wearing my Mets ski cap then handed me a little box of cards with 7 hits to my 64 topps,2 hits to my 65 topps,4 1970 and 2 1971 topps hits. AWESOME cards. I had 2 cards for ed a 1955 and 56 oriole card, but i think i left them home I felt like an ass. After we met Ed took me and treated me to an AWESOME bar where we threw down a few Cold Beers, and I had the BEST shrimp i have ever had in my life....We met up with a few of Eds friends, he introduced me to a 30 year Captain with the Baltimore Fire department....again great time. We made our way to the stadium, and stopped outside a bar called Pickles and WOW was this strip outside the stadium MOBBED...they dont have this stuff in NY we had a blast...got some Orioles beeds from a few women who worked at a very nice Club..wink wink.... saw a bunch of people and didn't know them, but b.sd with them it was a great party/time....Baltimore is a fantastic town b-4 a game. Now we head into the game to watch the Rays take on the Orioles fun game the 3 of us got to sit together and we had a blast...I got to also add Camden yards is the Nicest Stadium i have been to and they have the BEST HOT DOGS...Hey mike rich...the dogs here didn't kill my stomach...LOL I am sure there is a lot of stuff i am leaving out, but I sincerely wanted to THANK ED SCHOTT for the cards and such a GREAT time Thank you ED Rob "The FIREMAN" **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. A wonderful 9-count sheet of 1960 gems arrived in Omaha two days ago from psychic OBCer Lynn Miller. I say "psychic" because over the past week I had been thinking a lot about the group and, again, how much I've missed being an active participant. I've expressed that sentiment several times over the past year, along with a commitment last November to get back into the swing of things. Maybe this time... Anyway, the group of cards Lynn sent was awesome, including Stu Miller, Don Williams (before he got into singing? ), Bob Cerv, Tom Brewer (who had the unique skill of being a Brewer and a Red Sox player at the same time...), and Bob Rush, whom Topps purported was a pitcher, but the youngster who owned the card added "Of"... vitally important to historical roto geeks. Also included were the musical duo of Sadowski & Amalfitano, as, according to Topps, "Joe likes to play the accordian" and "Ed is a talented harmonica player". Kinda gives you a reason to avoid any convention where the two of them are in the same room... :-) At any rate, thanks a ton, Lynn... these were a wonderful pick-me-up and might be a "get me goin'" as well... ================= To: "obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com" Date: Sun, 6 Apr 2008 22:54:49 -0400 From: Bob Reed Subject: Incoming Thanks go out to Don Rice who sends me two loose 1969 Football stamps plus two rare hits to the 1950 Bowman baseball set. Then, for "payment" I got to be a Kansas fan for two games and get hysterical about the finals! Thanks for recruiting me, Doug! That was a blast. And thanks for the cards. In my heart, I'm still an Illini fan...but we've all done something for cards, haven't we? ================= Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 05:55:27 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "mikerw7" Subject: ...and Thanks to Peter, Bill and Kent So this week my wife and I celebrated our 15th Anniversary. I didn't tell her, "Sorry, Hon, I've got some cards I need to sort through." Fifteen years, you learn a few things. Consequently, I had a few packages piling up on me, and am now getting to thank you all. Peter Mead sent a padded envelope with fifty-three cards, hitting my Topps sets from 1965 THROUGH 1974, including five 74 Traded (which I've now started, thanks to Peter!) and 20 hits to my 73's, and he threw in 11 1977s for good measure. Man, Peter! Thanks! Bill Ashton sent an envelope containing three 1954 Bowmans. There's something a little magical to me about those 50s Bowman sets; I think they're very artistic. I got #27 Dick Cole, #123 Toby Atwell, #172 Andy Seminick. My daughter Lydia said, "Wow, I guess dad likes the cards!" Apparently, I was smiling pretty big. Finally, Kent Montgomery sent an amazing group of cards, in packs! I had just noted how much I liked Mike Mroz's packaging and then I got to open five hand-wrapped packs with personal notes on them. Talk about a throwback to childhood! Remember buying an armful of packs and the opening frenzy? Well, these packs had 125 cards, Topps 1960 through 1969, then 71 and 72, with from five to fourteen for every year, and then twenty-eight for 1972! Highlights included a 1971 Frank Howard, a 1971 Sparky Anderson short print, and a 1972 Lefty Carlton. But my favorite was a 1969 #38 Zoilo Versalles. Who? I'd never heard his name in my life, in spite of the fact that he was the 1965 AL MVP with 122 runs, 45 doubles, 12 triples, and 308 total bases--all tops in the league--and won the Gold Glove at short. Oh, and a .500 slugging % in the World Series that year! I love baseball. (I know, the Thank You becomes a Ramble.) Hey, Kent? Thanks. A ton. ================= Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 09:02:28 EDT To: illini_grad_90@yahoo.com, obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com From: LUURSCJG@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Thanks] Hail to the Orange, Hail to the Blue! DON RICE sent me seven good hits to my 1967 Topps set, as well as two year project hits. Thanks, DON! OBC friendly dealer DICK ZIMMERMAN has sent the third of three purchases, making some great progress on all my sets from 1969 through 1973. Thanks to DICK. and BOB REED provided me with a couple of addresses of former players with my last name. So thanks to BOB, because I got some good results with that info. I sent some cards to Bob Shirley (MLB 77-87) a few weeks ago and got them back autographed in about a week. I sent two to Bart (MLB 64-68) at the same time and they arrived back last week, both autographed! One said 'To Aaron, Best wishes, Bart Shirley,' and he wrote me a nice note as well. So I'm adding my voice to the other members who report astounding generosity from Lynn. Lynn's packages to me held: 510 1974 Topps, taking my wantlist from needing 580 to needing 70!!! 264 1973 Topps and 110 1972 Topps, changing both of those from "have" lists to Wantlists for me! As if that wasn't enough, Lynn also included 40 1974 Topps Traded cards, reducing my Wantlist to TWO, including the checklist! My favorite cards from the gift of nearly A THOUSAND, each of which I joyfully handled and read and sorted and looked up and recorded, included a 1972 Clemente (#226), which yes, I think is my first Clemente card, and he's one of my heroes; 1972 Frank Robinson (#228) and Yaz In Action; 1973 Carew, Bench, and Carlton League Leaders, a beautiful Bob Gibson card, and a Bench World Series card; 1974 Bench, Carew and Morgan, Reggie, Campy & Speier, and Catfish All-Star cards...and Sparky Lyle--pre-mustache! Oh man, I can see that this won't be forgotten for a while over in Glasgow. Apparently someone over there is still laughing. See, here's the thing. Some guys don't think the '74 set is done until you have the "Wash Natl Lea" variations in hand. OK, after I reluctantly swallowed that concept, I put the Washington variations on my list. Small problem - kids, before you put the Washington variations on the list, you might want to make sure you have the San Diego cards in the first place, because in one case I didn't. My oversight actually had some benefit, though. In the course of providing Glenn with some heckling material, I was informed that since I needed the #599 San Diego version, I might as well go after both #599 San Diego versions - large and small print. Seems logical that I go after all variations, right Glenn? -------------- Original message -------------- From: Glenn Codere I fear that there's something you should know about that 1974 set, but I might leave it to Geordie Calvert to fill you in.....
