First the guy who keeps the postal service in business, Mark Talbot, hits an unmentionable set whose contents will be detailed elsewhere. Thanks Mark! The second arrival came from a former Major Leaguer. This past Christmas Iordered my son a book that contained addresses of past and present ball players. I sent out our first envelope a few weeks ago and received the SASEback yesterday. I sent 6 cards to that great underrated pitcher of the early 70's, Bob Reed. I asked him to sign 4 for my kids and to keep two for himself. His return envelope contained his 4 1971 cards signed as well as a bonus, a signed J.D. McCarthy postcard. Unfortunately he didn't write a note as I hoped but at least he sent it back. We'll probably pick some more players to write to. I may considered an attempt to get an entire set signed. If anybody would like to request an address let me know. Please try to keep it to one or two so I'm not too overwhelmed. Subject: Cards fly into Southeastern Michigan!!!!

Hello All,

Got to sleep in today as the snow storm we received last evening closed the schools today. The trade off of course was a couple hours of snow shoveling, but I do get to sit down for a few hours now and catch up on hobby business. A number of items have been delivered so allow me to thank:

Anthony Arbeeny who allows me to be included in his recent dispersal of `71 Fleer Globetrotter cards. The SCP of Curley Neal is one of the grey back cards I have been chasing and certainly appreciated. Thanks for thinking of me Ant-man!!!

Tom Housley sends me a couple TIGER cards Kirk Gibson and Johnny Grubb for the Year of the Month project. Tom's name has been a regular in my Sterling Heights mailbox and I for one appreciate his diligence. Thanks Tom!!!

Gary Mandell connects with a SCP TIGER card of Stan Papi for my Tiger collection. This collection has really taken off and I am enjoying putting together the collection of local diamond heroes of the past. Your help is duely noted Gary - Thanks!!!

Lynn Miller keeps Wyatt the postal carrier extra busy with two envelopes to Southeastern Michigan. Lynn continues a familiar theme with a hit to the Year of the Month project with a Cal Ripken RC from Donruss - WOW!!! The vintage selections came from the `76 SSPC set with cards of Dwight Evans, Luis Tiant and Dave Kingman. Now that's not a bad group of players, you have always been so generous Lynn, Thanks so much!!!

Don Rice is kind enough to send me a `50 Callahan card of the 1st President of the National League Morgan Bulkeley, a cool card with interesting bio information. Don also takes aim at the Year of the Month project with a Wizard of Oz card - Ozzie Smith. Thank you for your kindness Don!!!

Finally, T.J. Valacek continues the assault on my Hockey collection with (9) selections; (1) from the `71-72 OPC set (Tracy Pratt) and (8) direct hits to the dwindling `76-77 Topps set with Kindrachuk, Nowak, Cashman, Bladon, Lorentz, Bergman, Hampton and Hickey. It's always a pleasure to knock off these hockey cards, I really enjoy reading them as I did not collect them as a kid so it's all new to me. Thanks T.J.

To these and all in this great group thanks and - BE WELL!!!

Subject: Cardboard Memories

A huge thanks out to DON RICE for 7 psychos and a great childhood
memory. Included among the seven 72s were 3 HOFers: Mays, Red Sox Rookie
Star Carlton Fisk, and a Bench IA. Also worthy of note was a guy with a
great baseball name, Bill Gogolewski who would have fit in well with the
White Sox during their Go Go era. As I was updating my 72T wantlist I
noted that with the Mays & Fisk cards, I had a run of 298 consecutive
cards in that set with the Aaron card breaking my streak. It was then
that I was visited by the past.

Flashback to the summer of 1958....... Excluding the infamous "not from
the neighborhood kid" my 2 closest collecting friends were Denny Chapman
and Billy Schlictt. Keeping with our boys will be boys competitive
nature, Billy came up with a great cardboard contest. The object was to
generate streaks of cards in increments of 25. The first person to check
off 25 consecutive cards on his checklist would win a pack of cards from
each of the other two. There after, the person who reached a 50 card
streak would win a pack from each and so on.
I got off to a great start being the first to amass a 25 card run. Being
the initial winner, I was able to include a stipulation that it was no
fair just giving the winner a nickel, the losers had to actually buy a
pack of cards and hand it over. A little salt in the wound you might
say. So, it's Saturday morning and I had bragging rights all the way to
Pic Nic's Market where my 2 cruddy buddies were forced to pay up in
front of G-d and everybody. My victory was dampened a bit by the fact
that neither pack I received contained a Tiger or superstar card, but it
was a triumphant moment none the less.
I think Billy won the next 2 rounds being the first to reach 50 and 75
card runs.

After that the memory falters a bit with the exception of an
unbelievable comeback by Denny late that summer. Through trades and lots
of lawn mowing, he was the first to hit what I remember as being a 275
card run. Upon opening his pay off packs the following Saturday, he
pulled a card that gave him a 300 card run AND he also pulled the
coveted #1. So not only does he get to rag on Billy and I for providing
him with the Williams card, but we both have to buy him another pack of
cards. Much to his delight and our chagrin, he pulls #70 out of one of
the packs. For weeks after that Billy and I argue about which of us
relinquished the pack with the Kaline in it. As an aside here, the
slightly torn and crumpled 58 Mantle that I have to his day was actually
pulled from a pack by Denny sometime over the summer. Being an avid
Yankee hater, he would express his disdain by crumpling any Yankee card
he got and tossing it on the ground. The small tears came about as Billy
and I tussled for possession while invoking the finders keepers rule.

OK, fast forward to the present day, 2008. It is difficult to believe
that I can remember incidents from 50 years ago and can't remember what
I just went into the next room for. Who was I thanking? A quick scroll
up, oh yeah, Thanks much Don, for both the cards and a long forgotten
childhood memory. Very much appreciated.

Today i walked to my mail box an hour earlier then normal, but i heard

of junk mail and 1 package from a fellow OBCer...I was excited. It was from
Andy Cook, whom I missed at the Reading show last weekend.
I went in to open the package which took me alittle time because it was
in a plastic bubble envelope and i was upstairs and didn't want to go to the
kitchen for a knife or scissors which built up the anticipation more. when i
finally pried the package open i saw a stack of 55 topps. In this stack Andy
sent me 35 1955 topps cards in dam near mint condition ....Wow I am
floored...Andy these are great cards... THANK YOU so very much I love them
Thank a million

A couple of great packages to mention...

ANDY COOK sends a whopping 30 1963 Topps off a recent waiver wire...
This is some SERIOUS help for one of my weaker sets! Thanks, Andy.

ED SCHOTT sends ten 1970 Topps mid-high series cards. Wow, thanks Ed!

Funny thing about the cards from Ed... our neighbor brought them over
to my wife today, as they were placed in her mailbox mistakenly.
There's a really bright sign right in front of her mailbox that says
134, as well as the big bold numbers on the side of the mailbox. And
the same thing with ours: 130. I guess it's a good thing Miss Gladys
doesn't collect cards!!! I wonder if any of the other neighbors have
been getting all those Mantle rookies that everyone's been sending me! :)

Thanks again, Andy and Ed.

Thanks go out to these three in a big way. I tell you, this year thing is
working out real nice for me, and I'm also getting real close on my pre-National
goals. I may have to amend them. Recently picked up a bunch of 58s including
a Clemente, Kaline, Hodges, Podres, Drysdale and Koufax. That should make
things a little easier (except for those damn yellow Clemente and Kaline. I
can't believe what they are selling for on Ebay....

Bob knocks off a pair of fair hurlers from the 77 list- Don Gullett and Joe

Brian shrinks the 77 list further with a pair of Bucs- Tekulve and Demery
(that kid should have had a better career..)

Lynn slams my 74 list with 32 hits and 2 more 77s!

Thanks LOADS, I think I need to update all my lists again. Should have a few
wavier's from the assortment I got with the Clemente to post this weekend....

I got a few items in the mail today so allow me to thank:

Bob Bannon for a `48 Bowman card, a very unusual `63 Topps Tracy Stallard card with a Ed Hobaugh back, and a couple of odd-ball items of Pete Rose and Bob Clemente. These are just TOO COOL!!!

Andy Cook flips me an unusual pre-war item featuring pole vaulter F.T. Nelson from the Pan Handle Scraps "World Champion Athletes" set. these are quite different from the T-218 set that I love so much. If I can find more of these I might be persuaded to add them to my list. Thanks Andy for this type card.

Another busy day at the mailbox here in Glasgow!

First off, a big thank you goes out to Andy Cook for a trio of 1963s - Smoky Burgess, Norm Bass, and Larry Osborne. All from the nosebleed and semi-nosebleed sections.

I also took delivery of a nice 4-some from a dealer which included a '62 Billy Hoeft variation and 3 football cards, a 65P Alex Karras, a 1969T Mike Lucci, and a '72 Unitas IA.

The last item I received was a little more unusual. I'm jetting off the Rome, Italy on Wednesday (along with 7 friends....yes, I have that many....) to spend a long weekend and attend the Italy-Scotland rugby international match. In addition to the usual paraphanalia that goes with attending these games (kilt, Scotland rugby jersey, etc.), I'll be catching my friends off guard by also sporting a natty pair of Scottish flag contact lenses. I found a company on the web that do them, and ordered a pair earlier this week. I'll be sure to get a picture or two that you can use to scare the kids/pets/neighbors.

Once again, thanks to Andy for the great cards!!

Long time OBCer Lynn Miller must be psychic. Saturday night was one of the
most painful nights of my life--apparently, after almost 52 years of
peaceful coexistance, my appendix decided it was time for us to part ways.
What started out as minor stomach cramps around 4:00 PM turned into full
blown agony by 1:30 Sunday morning. That was the point I moaned to Barb to
go look up "appendicitis" on the web. As she read off the symptons I
responded with a "got it" (sort of like going through a dupes
box!). Anyway, by 7:00 I was in surgery getting it removed. I came home
on Monday, and what is awaiting me, but a great envelope from Lynn
Miller. It contained 2 great 52's (of the rare, "untrimmed" variety--my 52
set got a great jump-start when I picked up 150 trimmed ones for 50 bucks
about 20 years ago) including the man who hit the most famous HR in
Phillies history, Dick Sisler. And, to sate my variation mania, a 56
White back, and 2 61 checklist variations. Much appreciated after a less
than fun day and a half.

And for those of you considering such a fun-filled weekend. The good news
is, with laproscopic surgery, once it's done, it isn't too bad. I was out
taking a 3 mile walk 48 hours after surgery, with very little discomfort.
The down side was that I was back at work after only 2 days.

that in 5 days I'll be in sunny Orlando). So, what better thing is there to

I'd like to thank the following people:

Thanks to ANDY COOK who sends 6 waiver-wire hits to my 69/70 Topps basketball
set, knocking the WL down to an even 20. The condition on these is just
perfect, Andy; thanks!

Thanks to DON RICE for a flat which included a variety of hits: a DCP of 1963
Post which look they were just cut (very nicely) from their boxes yesterday;
a TCP of 1962 Post, including Yogi Berra & Felipe Alou; and a DCP of 1961
Post, including Bill White. I've decided that my 61-63 Post sets will be all-OBC,
so these are greatly appreciated. Andy also sends a barely-unmentionable card
of a certain stolen base leader, whih will be fully described elsewhere.

I also received cards from non-OBC'er Mickey Tevelow; if he contacts anyone

Hello All,

Mike Rich, Ron Perry, Mike Mroz and yours truly met today at the Redford show for some cardboarding and fellowship. Of course cards went flying as is always the case. So thanks to:

Mike Mroz for bringing (6) cards from the Year of the Month Project with (3) TIGERS and a stack of Hockey cards that I had to give back to Mike because I do not need them and it wouldn't be right to deprive another OBC'er those cards so Mike will be looking at some lists to distribute those.

Mike Rich who slipped me (3) `69 Topps 4 in 1's, a `71 Fleer Globetrotter card (Meadowlark) and a `71 Coco Puffs Globetrotter (Meggett & Davis). Mike also allowed me to buddy up with him for a Red Wings game at the JOE and even picked up the tab for lunch - I had a great afternoon Mike - Thanks again!!!

I spent a little time roaming the hall with Ron catching up on this and that and had a pretty good show, I'm down to (8) `80-81 Topps Basketball trios to complete the set, (3) `60 Fleer Football, and made progress on a number of Football, Hockey and Year of the Month sets. Most enjoyable though was spending time with fellow FOOT members enjoying the hobby we all love. BE WELL!!!

As Mark Talbot previously posted, there was a nice FOOT gathering at
the Redford show today. I made a bit of progress on my own and also
want to thank Mark, Ron Perry and Mike Rich for their contributions.

Mark handed me a nice stack of year project cards encased between 2
1960 Topps - Wally Moon and Bud Daley. He also slipped in a 1979 OPC
of my HOMer, Mickey Stanley.

Mike brought for me three Cubs color variations from the Psycho set,
along with a couple of Kellogg's cards - a 73 Ellie Rodriguez and a
1980 Larry Hisle.

I didn't exchange cards with Ron, but he did make a nice hockey card
find and I was leaving, from which I was able to grab a few cards.
One dealer had a great pile of 60's materail at bargain-basement prices.

Thanks Guys for the cards and comaradarie!

It's unusual for me to get more than a single OBC envelope on any given
day, so today was really special in that FOUR OBC cadeaux graced my
mailbox. There was a great assortment of cards from some of my favorite
sets, courtesy of....

MARK TALBOT, who starts things off with another pugilistic hit to my
T-218 set in the form of Jack (Twin) Sullivan . This is nearly a pure
OBC set, and Mark is a man on a mission to knock it out. Mark also wraps
the card in a 2008 Tigers schedule (see below for more on schedules).
Thanks Mark!

The House of Maxwell is next, where EEK sends an impressive run of
sixteen cards ranging from 1957 to 1972. Great cards that fit right in
with their brethren, and highlighted by HOF Lou Brock ('72T) and Jackie
Jensen ('59T), not to mention some nose bleeders from '72. Thanks EEK!

RICK LYONS is next, with two hits to one of my favorite all time sets.
1964 was my first year of "aggressive" collecting as a kid, as I fell in
love with some of the unique Topps issues that year. To this day I
continue to have a soft spot for the Giant set, coin inserts, and the
Stand-Ups. It was the latter set that Rick hits, with two beautiful
examples from that special set (Hunt and Peters). Thanks Rick!

Finally, old trading partner GARY MANDELL kicks in with seventeen hits
to my prime collecting years as a kid, 1967 and 1968. For me, these
years were dominated by the 1967 "Impossible Dream" Red Sox, so these
sets run me down memory lane again and again. Thanks for the memories, Gary!

Yes, a good day.

Oh yeah, more about schedules... For anybody who might be interested,
I've added an "OBC Oddball Waiver Wire" to my web WL. The link is at the
end of the second page of my "OBC-Only Want List" (see, I get you look
first!). I am hoping to list things there that aren't really
traditional OBC items, but members still might want to pick up, things
like schedules, reprints, uv items, whatever. For ease, here's a direct
link to the specific page:
http://home.nycap.rr.com/dkrice/page14.html
It's a work in progress, but I hope to add to it fairly regularly. Claim

Hi OBC,

On Sunday I was able to attend the Redford show with Mike Rich, Mark Talbot and Mike Mroz. As usual it was a good show with some good deals and good camaraderie with the FOOT contingent.

Thanks are in order to:

Mike Rich who dropped of two Red Man Tobacco Richie Ashburn from 52 and Nellie Fox from 54.

Mark Talbot found a short print 62 Topps football and a 1972 high number Paul Blair from my list in our old buddy Harold's binders. I think Mark gets better deals from Harold than any of us.

Bill Ashton sends a 51 Bowman, Ray Coleman

Lynn Miller sends a stack 70's Fleer, mostly Baseball Firsts. Lynn also included a 54 Bowman of Billy Hoeft.

My haul from the show was 29 hits to the wantlist including a 55 Phil Rizzuto the final card to complete the set, a group of 1950's Parkhurst hockey, a bunch of 1953 Bowman football, an autographed 64 Topps Giant of Jim Bunning and a stack of 1960's stuff from Mike Sandles five cent box which are really about three cents after discount.

Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your home page.

Big thanks go out to JOHN STORMAN for a nice looking 1948 Leaf Kent
Peterson. Reading the back, Kent is described as one of the "promising
stars of the NL".... despite having a record of 2-15 and leading the
league in hit batsmen the previous year. Ouch. A brief look at his
career shows he hung in there for eight seasons, but only managed 13
career wins. Thanks John! I really love the colors in this set.

Better make way in your brackets for the Illini - a

Jim in a Tigers uniform and the back of the card asks the following
question. "Which team had 4 pinch hits in one inning?" That's a tough
one, and I'll give you the answer at the bottom. John also includes a
hit to my 53 Bowman set. He sends over a Jim Busby - mini. Not only is
this one a mini, but it has been signed by Jerry Kutijesky on the front

Bob Reed somehow crams 25 into a single envelope and says "I hope these

Gersh also helps plenty with a more conventional (for an envelope) 5 pack
including Leroy Stanton. When the Mets made the Ryan trade, I was more upset
that they gave up Stanton than any of the others... He came up for a cup of
coffee with the Mets the year before. In 4 ABs, he hit the track 2x for outs
and hit a triple (and promptly got hit in the head with the thrown ball). I
didn't want to see him go. Thanks for the cards!

Hello All.

Its time to thank some fine traders for neat items that were sent to Southeastern Michigan. These items have come in over the past week and it's high time to thank:

Bill Ashton sends me a little of the old and a little of the new with a `53 Topps back variation card of Keith Thomas and a grouping of (6) cards for the Year of the Month project. Thanks for the great additions to the collection Bill!!!

Brian Betza hits my "Special Players" collection with a `55 Bowman card of Bob Talbot and another `55 Bowman card of TIGER Frank Lary for the TIGER collection. These are a couple of FUN cards for new areas of my collection - Thanks Brian!!!

John Scott Gray sticks it to me with some stickers that are mentioned in the YEAR of the Month project bringing that list closer to completion

Rick Lyons finds a small group for this months section of the Year of the Month project - Thanks Rick!!!

Lynn Miller connects with a grouping of cards from the Year of the Month club that are quite helpful in putting to rest a few sets that I never was very interested in prior to this project. Thanks for your assistance Lynn!!!

Don Rice posts a number of skeds on his new available listing and then promptly sends me most of them upon my request for these skeds. What a guy and now I have even more pressure to finally organize this portion of my collection. Thanks for your contribution to my collection Don!!!

Aaron Shirley slips me an upgrade to my `73 Topps collection with an unmarked checklist and a few items for the Year of the Month project. Nice of you to help me in both these area of my collection Aaron!!!

John Storman flips me a SCP from the `48 Leaf set with Chicago Cubs pitcher Bob McCall. It is nice to get another card for this rarely hit set, so thank you John!!!

T.J. Valacek finds 3 dozen Year of the Month project cards. Thanks to T.J.

Marshall West sends me a "bribe" with a couple `62 Post Canadian cards (Cepede & McCormick), a `63 Post card (Mahaffey) and a `58 Topps Yellow letter variation of Early Wynn - all for a single YL variation that I pullled from my collection for him. Looks like I got the better end of this deal - enjoy the "set killer" Marshall!!! Thanks for the Jazz sked as well.

To those mentioned here and all those in this great group many thanks - more stuff has hit the post to these and other traders so be on the lookout. BE WELL!!!!

Despite the fact that LYNN MILLER is permanently perched atop my owe

think Coors has the Cold Train, but it's not as cool as the Miller Mail

array of cardboard. No less then six envelopes have made it from Las
Vegas to Grand Blanc in the past couple months with two recently
arriving on consecutive days. The one I can mention here was an SCP of
Bill Bruton for my 61 Post Tiger's set. Thanks much Lynn, return fire is

I don't want to be one-upped here, so I too, wish to offer thanks. Bill wrote
to me and told me he was sending a few my way, so I rushed into his wants
hoping to scramble up at least something to send back his way. I guess I
should just be happy that my package arrived to him on the same day, but it
is a weak strike-out compared to the batting practice sized hits that arrived
from him in my mailbox today. Hits ranging from the most recent unmentionable
release, all way back to a near dump-truck sized load of 1973's. So
many of them that I lost count somewhere after a triple dozen or so, and
there was at least another double dozen left to count, if I wasn't so oldand
could actually count that high.

Never mind you think some of these are a little "beat up," Bill; they look like
pristine gem mint to me !!!!! !!! !!!!! Awesome, and thanks so much!

Deeply Humbled,

Not only do I need to update my counting skills, I guess I also need to learn
to at least try to count all the way to the end. Taking another look atMr.
Ashton's package, along with that truck load of '73's, I now see he also
included nearly another dozen issues, a scattering of cards that cover ten
plus more years into the past, all the way back to the early 1960's.

Truly amazing, Bill; this will take me all weekend to sift through and put away
and I'll most certainly see if I can find something to help repay at least
a little bit of your generousity.

...and to think I was already humbled when I wrote the first time. Sheesh.

Thanks Bill,

Subject: Thank You Kent & Joel!!!

Hello All,

I was 5 minutes away from posting this yesterday and had to leave to go to church, when I sat down a number of hours later to finish, my niece who had used my computer closed the email window and I lost the post. I will try to replicate it as best I can but the cards I've received are no longer organized by the trader who sent them to me, so if I thank the wrong trader for the wrong item I apologize in advance. Thanks to:

Joel Freedman who finds a bunch of "oddball" items and ships them my way. Knowing how much I enjoy these Joel insured many hours of cardboard fun with racing cards, Looney Tunes cards, Comics cards, Marilyn Monroe cards, You'll Die Laughing, TV Westerns and a number of British Tea and Tobacco cards. Loads of FUN Joel - THANKS!!!

Kent Montgomery decides that I should add a few "oddball" sets to my list by slipping me a couple of starter sets. (37) of the 60 card `85 Donruss Action All-Stars set are shipped with (46) of the 126 `85 Fleer Star Stickers thanks to Kent's kindness. As soon as I find others that I'm sure I have laying around here I will be posting yet a couple more sets to my list, Thanks (I think) Kent!!!

I'm on spring break this week but have a major college paper that is due (the last for this program) and will be spending a good chunk of time getting that together but I do plan on spending some down time on hobby issues so expect to see a few items in the mail this week. If I owe you and you haven't heard from me in some time feel free to drop me a line as my accounting system is poor at best. To all in this fine group - BE WELL!!!

Subject: Overdue Thanks - long

I spent the greater part of last week in the Chicago area on
business, so I'm a bit behind in getting out some well-deserved thank
yous. I had made plans for my wife and daughter to fly in on Friday
afternoon and join me for some downtown Chi-town fun, but
unfortunately, Old Man Winter decided to make a late appearance and
hit both Detroit and Chicago with 6+ inches of snow. Their first
flight was cancelled at 6:00 am Friday morning (before and flakes
dropped at either place - go figure) and their 2nd flight was
cancelled at 4:00pm. After finding out the soonest they could fly in
was 5:00pm on Saturday, we decided to scrap the idea and I headed
into a 9 hour, white-knuckled drive home from O'Hare. I made it home
safely and we headed instead to Frankenmuth for a couple days of much
needed R&R.

Anyway, I had an great evening of cardboard, comaradarie and chat
with TJ Valacak on Wednseday. We met for a bite to eat and a couple
of beers at a local sports pub. Immediately on my arrival, TJ
dropped a lunch bag in front of me, filled with goodies from
yesteryear. Included were 2- 1955 Topps, 6- 1960 Topps, 2- 1966
Topps, 4- 1967 Topps, 56- 1957 Topps, and 25- 1976 Topps. Included
were names like Parker, Niekro, McCovey and Aparicio, among others.
TJ also included a couple of unmentionables to complete the package.

In addition to the cards, he also handed me a binder in an attempt to
convert me into becoming a binder-storer (is there such a term?).
With the way his collection looks in plastic, I think he now has me
among the converted. We had a great time talking cards, sports and
hometowns, and he shared with me the story of how a Windy City native
became a Red Sox fan. Additionally, we welcomed me into his home to
share a view of his collection. I had a great time - Thanks TJ!

I returned home today to find some great packages from Bob Bannon,
Sal Domino, and Lynn Miller.

Bob sends 3 hits to my '73 Topps set, including a nose-bleeder of
Dick Bosman.

Sal sends a dozen hits to my '77 Topps effort with hurlers Kaat,
Lonborg, and Fingers.

Lynn sends 57 '70 Topps with an unmarked 4th series checklist, 3 '73
Topps, including Eddie Mathews, one each 76 & 77 Topps, and 2 '75
Topps - Steve Carlton & Fred Lynn. WOW! He also included a UV card
for my Tigers collection.

Thanks to TJ, Bob, Sal and Lynn!!!

2 recent packages have been received. 1 from someone I met through
SCD, Tony Fucillo who sent me a 1959 Armour Hot Dog coin of Ashburn
getting me to within 5 of a base set.
The other package was a surprise package that was stunning from Andy
Cook. Andy sent a 6 pack, that was shocking. A 1933 Tattoo Orbit
Walberg, one of the nicest I have even if there is a hole in the card,
as I have almost 2/3 of the set. An english version 1933 WWG (Canadian
Goudey) BB, getting me to having 1/3 on that base set. A 1936 WWG BB
of Hayworth a member of the Tigers. Then to what I think will be most
people's surprise who have looked at my lists, he sent me 3 more TYPE
cards. A 1912 Zeenut (I now have 1 from 10 different years of
Zeenuts); 1920 W519 unnumbered version (there are only 10 in the set,
so 10% done!) and my first Seattle Popcorn cardm this one from 1956.
My type card lists are looking more and more like the index in the big
SCD thanks to tremendous hits like this. Combine that with my loss to
Andy in the NCAA pool and I am deeply in debt!

Subject: New Guy's Thank You's!

Hi, Everyone! Thanks to all of you for having me as part of the crew!
I'm still learning the ropes, and I appreciate all the help and
encouragement I've gotten so far.

Easter was a busy week for me, but I've finally gotten a little time
to enjoy the cards I received this past week.

A big Thanks to Bill Ashton, the first OBCer to hit my wantlist! He
shot a great bubble with twenty-seven Topps 1971s and twenty-three
Topps 1972s to help get me rolling! I really appreciate it, Bill!

Andy Cook dug out thirty-four Topps 1963s for this newbie's cause. I
opened the puffy and there was Roger Maris! Thanks, Andy, it's the
first Roger Maris card I've ever owned!

Then yesterday, on my first day "off" in a long time, I went to the
mailbox and found three more packages!

Thanks, Grant Rainsley, for investing in international postage and
sending the four SWEET 55 Bowmans and also knocking some off my Topps
77s! I'm seeing great progress on that list.
Hey, who is the handsome chap on the horse on that UV card? I don't
think I have any of that set.

Lynn Miller also chopped twenty-one off my Topps 77s and forty-four
off my Topps 76s! Thanks, Lynn. You're right; it's great already!
You guys weren't kidding about getting supports for my mailbox.

Finally, Sean McGowan sent a BOX with one hundred ninety-one cards!
Sean, Wow! Thanks! The spread was 1957-1977, hitting no less than
FIFTEEN different sets.

Can I tell you that you all gave me a great day off yesterday? I'm
still sorting through all the 73 Topps Sean sent. It takes me a long
time since I want to read all the stats and compare the player's card
with those of other years.

I promise I'll do a proper "New Guy intro" on Ramblings soon, but I
had to start thanking the faithful before I fell hopelessly behind.
As my dad used to say, Bless all your pointy heads!

Mike Rumley-Wells

Good morning OBC--

Got home last night after a short Easter vacation--spent some time yesterday sight seeing the historic homes along the Hudson--Vanderbilts and FDR's home.

REturned to see that Lynn Miller has cranked up his printing press again.....Many thanks for a couple of hits to my lifetime quest. Jim Russell and Herman Wehmeier have joined their friends in the 1952 binder.

Also returned to a six pack of nice 1970 OPC cards from Rick Lyons. This set is a complete OBC effort--I have never bought a card and am down to 44 cards needed. Thanks Rick.

And an overdue thanks to JSG (who I owe doubles to in the NCAA pool). Dr. Gray sends a 53 Bowman George Shuba along with a short stack of 69-70 Topps hockey highlighted by Tim Horton.

Earl Kilbourn introduced himself more formally by means of great

Orlando Cepeda 67, Maz from 71, HR champs from 71--Frank Howard,
Killebrew and Yaz on the same card is cool--and a gorgeous Luis

Very late Opening Day Thanks, I regretfully must add, going out to:

Aaron Shirley for two nice upgrades to my '73 set, including my 2nd
favorite baseball card of all-time, the '73 Jack Aker.

Peter Mead, for a nice '68 Topps Poster of Dean Chance, resplendent in
his Twins uniform.

Lynn Miller, for a tremendous variety package of 50's Bowmans, sixteen
of them, capped off with a Fleer ATG of Walter Johnson.

Thanks guys, great stuff!

I'm not getting tired of receiving cards yet, so I hope you guys
aren't tired of reading my thank-yous!

My gratitude to:
Anthony Arbeeny, who welcomed me with hits to my Topps 73 and 76T
sets, including three nice team cards.

The Fireman in NYC, who threw a spray of cards from Topps 60-73,
including a couple elusive checklists and some great high #s. Thanks,
Rob! (I think that'll be my last pun. Sorry.)

Joel Gyselink, offering my second Canadian welcome, who ran a gamut
from Topps 62-76, including a 1976 Mike Schmidt! That's a great
combination, since it's my highest priority 70's set and he's one of
my favorite players (the Phillies are my NL team).

Since someone just asked, Annalise now looks like her old self and
went to church today and danced. You'd never know, looking at her,
that she was in the hospital a few days ago. Amazing how resilient
children are.

Blessings on your heads,

Sitting here licking my wounds after crashing in a bicycle race
Saturday, it's time some thanks get shouted out to ED SCHOTT and BOB REED.

Ms. Deb sends a 9-pack of hits to my OBC-only want lists, including
eight hits to the 1968 Topps set, the last year I "officially collected"
as a kid. And in "honor of" soon to be higher postal rates, Bob sends
some "stamps and coin".... a 1962 Salada football coin, and four 1969
Topps football stamp singles. That latter set is getting oh-so close (a
baker's dozen).

Thanks Ed! Thanks Bob!

I'm a little late with some thanks for some hits to my Tiger's sets.
From fellow FOOT GLENN CODERE comes 3 Tigers that he allowed me to claim
from a recent waiver wire. A 70 Kelloggs Freehan, 69T McLain decal, and
a 63 Post Kaline. Thanks much Glenn.

ANDY COOK sends a couple more Tigers following Xavier's win over Purdue.
From the 61T set comes the Pitching Leaders card featuring Yankee Killer
Frank Lary & the SO Leaders with Lary and Senator Bunning. The truth be
known, as usual I was rooting for all the Big Ten teams so the cardboard
helped ease the sting. Thanks Andy, much appreciated.

We still have a Big Ten team from just up the road in the Frozen Four.
GO BLUE!!

Thanks go out to Bob Reed for not only running the NCAA pool but also losing twice to my teams. Bob sends three tough 53 high numbers my way including long-time back up Yankee catcher Charlie Silvera. I have to believe this guy was fat, dumb and happy during his career as he cashed annual world series checks.
