And Ron Perry catches up prior to his Chicago trip by sending a stack of 64 topps coins. I will have some phone chipping the paper and glue off the back of these.

A quick check of my sent mail from last year reveals that I had not passed on thanks for the contents, for which I deeply apologize to Linda. It's not like I get OBC packages very often, so I can't believe this one slipped through. The contents revealed a '66 Maris that I had claimed from one of her waiverwires, plus two hits to the '70 list and a hit to the '68 list. It goes without saying that there was the usual assortment of other oddball & cool items - a skater from the '36 Olympics, a German cigarette card of an estate, a triple-fold UV card of Carl "Oisk"ine, and an autograph of Milton Bradley when he was a Bum. Linda, thanks very much for the great cards. Included was a '71 Richie (don't call me "Dick") Allen, chopping that want list down to six cards, a '63 Fleer Jim Davenport, and a whole host of additional goodies, most of which I have no clue about what they are. I know that many of you have had that same experience with Linda many times. It's always a mystery package, but it's also always fun. I've known Linda for a good number of years now and I have learned something about her. It is not a cliche with Linda; she sincerely loves to give more than receive. I've never met her in person, but I always have this image conjured up of a lady who is obviously tickled pink when she puts a package in the mailbox. I still want to find something to send her; but the point here is that the old Friar thinks that, among many great and generous members in this group, we have this one who so clearly is a symbol of the season. Starting with baseball: Linda & Tim sent me my FIRST '52 Topps card via a waiver wire, a '54 Bowman (such a beautiful set!), 2 '55 Bowmans to my set that keeps getting larger & larger... I've got a feeling that this set will be complete by the end of '09, 3 hits to my '60 Topps set, 2 hits to my '63 set, a '64 hit to my 2nd favorite Team the Tigers of Hank Aguirre, and 2 hits to my '65 set. Now on to the German goodies we all KNOW & LOVE Two large cards that've been cut out of a book. The first has a man killing a bear with a spear, and according to babelfish it says "Since in new Germany the lambasted bear at the line of the gypsy is abolished, we see bears only in zoos. Into the Karpathen however one meets it this very day, but its hunt requires less courage than money. In former times, when one hunted in Germany with the Spears, it was dangerous, because master Petz does not only have giant forces, but is also extremely speedy and gewant" The second one has a card on each side. The first side has a picture of two men and a woman in a carriage being greeted by a man in a window. Trusty 'ol babelfish says this about the card: " CHAISE AT THE IMPACT TREE. In 18. Century was in place of the S=C3=A4nfte the similarly built carrying armchair (" after the French; haven chaise" allgermein " Chaise" gennant) in the larger cities than means of transport in use, until it was replaced by the wage cart. The Chaisentr=C3=A4ger was a special occupation. In Dresden e.g. there was even a guild of the Chaisentr=C3=A4ger." The third has a picture of people leisurely talking and wandering outside of a city. Trusty babelfish says this about the picture: " HYDRAULIC ARCHITECTURES. The Kunste Rococo arranged the palace garden with Pavillions, trees, hedges, figures and hydraulic architectures after uniform tarpaulin. As shrubs and hedges were cut artificial, then also the jets of the jumping wells were included into the devoured form play of the whole one. This very day we stand for delighted before these inimitably finely devised plants." The next German card has pictures of two men and a native American. Translated: " Karl May: " Halbblut" " Good day, Ik Senandal" That Halbbut with name Ik Senanda is " the son; Black Mustang". With him in the federation it acts. The chieftain entrusts the precious booty of that night raid to its care. Lonely it sits at a wind break and belieb=C3=A4ugelt the B=C3=A4rent=C3=B6ter. the Henrystutzen and the silver can. There more treter already the legal gentlemen of the precious weapons from the Dickicht out. Frightening immobilizes the Mestizen. He knows now, what struck the clock." ... this one doesn't make too much sense to me. The other cards include a beautiful street scene of M=C3=BCnster, a card depicting General Kleber - who worked in Napoleon's army, one with a picture of a boat being loaded (translation: " GERMANY CONSTRUCTS! Modern shelters. The time-consuming and dirty. Work of sheltering by means of coal baskets is replaced by a co-operating grip arm - and cup transportation work. This shelters requires only Maschinenbedlenung"), one with a b&w picture of an old barnyard literally sitting on a lake. The title of this card is " Tire and walking Fig. 22/abbott Spreewald and Oberlausitz. To the Kannom=C3=BChle.". Last but not least is a card that is VERY thick, and I am having trouble figuring out exactly what it is due to the "Old German" text. It's a very neat card with a drawing of a castle on the And last but certainlt not least, Linda & Tim sent me more cards for my coveted militaria collection which are to be prominently framed & displayed amongst the rest of my military collection. Thank you both! You never cease to amaze me. Hopefully my next two packages will at least partially repay you! To everybody else, I apologize for the long and drawn out history lesson included in this post. 1/4 of the fun in the infamous Fitak attacks is actually translating the cards to find out exactly what you got. Thanks today go out to LYNN MILLER for upgrading my 1971 Topps Billy
Grabarkewitz "white dot" version, along with some younger guys that are
mentioned elsewhere.

Thanks also go out to MIKE MROZ for a flat with a 67 Philly FB hit
(Mike Lucci), 4 early 70's hoops cards, and a pretty 1970 Kellogg's 3D
of Willie Horton.

Finally, there was a puffy from John Stamper with a delivery
confirmation stamp on it; I thought that was a little unusual until I
opened the puffy & discovered that John is my OBC Santa. Now I have to
wait until 12:00:01 a.m. on December 25 to find what's in there. The
anticipation is killing me already. Is it a 52 Mantle? Probably not,
but I can dream, right?? No matter what's wrapped in there, it will be
greatly appreciated.

As Maike and Mark have already reported there was the local Redford show this
past Sunday. For a short show (9 am - 2 pm) that occurs about every 6 weeks,
I always seem to find some nice buys. I walked in and soon found a few buys
including replanishing the dupe box with some HOFers such as 61 Topps FB
Unitas, 56 Topps Aaron & Banks, 57 Mathews, 66 Rose, 71 Frank Robinson and 1 Mark
Talbot has already claimed 60 Koufax. When I went and showed Mark my buy, he
hands me an envelope with a very important T-218 Jack Johnson. I shortly saw
Mike Mroz who hands over a pair of miscut 1970 Topps BB. A dealer, Bart, who
Mark & Mike both hit for their hit (Mark for 69-70 Topps Basketball and Mike
for 1970 Topps GB Game cards, etc.), gave me a present of a 1967 Philadelphia
wrong back.
I found a few hits for my collection including this eclectic mix:
T205 Stanage that was in such bad shape it might have been overpriced at the $3 I
paid for it! A 1954 Quaker Sports Oddities (my 4th of 27), 1957 Swift Meat
(3rd of 20), 1975 Twinkies, including Ryan & Yount, 1978 Detroit Free Press
Tigers set (I had never got the set before for some strange reason), 4 1949-66
Exhbits and started 2 more sets (I thought the lists were looking a bit sparse,
like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree), a late 70s issue of Olympic Greats
(missing #21 & 22), and a 1977 World of Sports Our Heroes picking up 32 of 48 in
the set. Also got a bunch of publications that I keep swearing I will stop
doing and never seem to stop.
Great seeing everyone before the holidays.

An envelope and a puffy were crammed into my mailbox today--one was sort of expected the other a surprise. Both are greatly appreciated-
Mike Rich shares a few treasures that I presume he picked up in Toronto--after all the cards are bi-lingual.  A 76 OPC Rose and three more HOFers from the 77OPC set--Lou Brock, Lefty Carlton and Johnny Bench. Wow--nice surprise
I think Andy Cook simply reached into his dup box and took out an incredible assortment of cards--three T206s including HOFer Fred Clarke, a pair of T218s--a really neat set--a pedestrian and a cyclist,  a short stack of 1939 PlayBalls, a short stack of 1948 Bowmans and a 62 Jello of Koufax. Not to be left out--Andy also included an Old Mill silk of an early actress.  A large thank you Mr. Cook.

Inside was a thoughful message from Mark wishing me well for my 37th cycle...and along for the ride were two examples of cards that made their appearance the year before I did. The 1971 Topps list now stands at 79 to go after two Royals cards (and two of the last 6 cards on my list -- always great to add to the back pages in my binder!). One of the cards was the Royals team card, which was amusing because it listed the Royals' "all-time" record holders; at the time, the team had all of two seasons under its belt, and all the batting stats were from 1970! I like how those early 1970s binders are getting fuller with almost every OBC envelope. And thanks to Mark for remembering that I'm getting older... Hello All,

Some cardboard has been sent to SE Michigan making the season bright. So without additional babble allow me to thank:

My mentor, Jeff DeLott finds a very difficult `69 Topps decal of YAZ to send my way leaving me with just (4) to go in this very cool insert set (Jackson, Mays, Santo and Seaver - hint, hint). Everyone knows how much I enjoy the "oddball sets" so this is an especially nice surprise - Thanks Jeff!!!

Kevin Martens helps me celebrate the holiday with a nice Christmas card and (10) unmentionable cards with names from the past like Lajoie, Cuyler and Sewell and Hometown heroes like Fidrych, Trammell & Doby. Thanks Kevin, I really like these retro sets with stars from the past!!!

Peter Mead continues the "never-ending" trade with a funny Christmas card and (10) `62 Post Canadian cards for my collection. Hom'er Norm Cash was featured in the haul that also included TIGER Charley Maxwell, Jim Perry, Billy Pierce, Billy Martin, Earl Battey, Frank Bolling, Don Hoak, Ron Santo and Tony Taylor. GREAT stuff Peter - thanks so much!!!

Finally I need some help, Mr. ??? Bluczkiw sends me a waiver wire SCP pleasure of a #1 Wayne Gretzky card from the `82-83 OPC set. This is a very cool hit from a guy I thought was a new prospect in our group - apparently he is not. I don't have the emails any longer and I can't find Mr. Bluczkiw (no note and return address only has his last name) in any of the trading groups that most of us belong to. I need help locating him so that I can properly repay his kindness - does anybody has info on this trader??? I really need your help!!!

So there you have it - plenty of fellas sending neat stuff to SE Michigan - What a BLAST!!! To all in our fine group Happy Holiday's and a Very Happy New Year. BE WELL!!!

REGARDS ------------------------ MARK

were actually competitive.

as the other Mike.

I very nice flat comes my way including a 55 Bill Renna. Three cards from
1961with a very good looking card of Dallas Green. Also included were a high
number from the 68 birth year set and 5 from 1969 with two them being pretty
high. I need some pringles.
Thanks for thinking of me Mike!

T.J. VALACAK sent a nice 1953 Topps Clem Labine, and a 1957 Topps
Andre Rodgers, both guys from those teams that went west in '58. Also
included were some shinier cards. Thanks, T.J.!

I also received some cards today from Andy Kamholz, who has a really
interesting blog - check it out: http://78topps.blogspot.com/
Anyway, he sent his cards first, and they arrived today: a 61 with a
lot of writing, 1964 Topps All-Star Vets card with Nellie Fox and
Harmon Killebrew, a 1964 Topps NL Strikeout Leaders card with Koufax,
1965 Gaylord Perry, a couple of nice 1970 high numbers, and a 73 OPC.
Pretty cool stuff. He is working on 1971 and 1973 Topps sets and can
use a LOT of help; if you have any of those laying around, you may be
able to work out a bit of a trade.

Mark also includes me in his Christmas gifts. I just have to admire his generosity.
He graces me with a wonderful hardbound golf book "How to Break
90" by one of my favorite players, Johnny Miller. I once had the pleasure
of watching Johnny in his peak during the 70's when he played an exhibition
match with Billy Casper at a private course in San Diego. Johnny is
reknowned for his iron play and that day was no exception. He didn't seem
to be more than 5-10 feet away on most of his approaches, and some hugged
the pin. Just a thing of beauty to watch. Casper was no slouch either.
It was a great exhibition, don't remember who had the lower sub-par
round but it was spectacular. Mark had called me shortly after I arrived
in Vegas and somehow remembered that I had mentioned Johnny. Now thatis
what I call truly thoughtful. Better than cardboard (except for maybe
a 52 Mantle) ;>) Thanks so much Mark for a wonderful gift,Lynn

OBC Newbie Richard Dingman sends a blazing 59 Topps of Bill Tuttle.

John Stamper sends a 18 pack including 3 64s 3 62s and 12 cards that
cannot be mentioned here.

Bill Ashton sends me 2 hits to one of the best looking sets of all
times, the 54 Bowman set plus a hit to a UV set.

John Dahms sent 5 hits to my shrinking 66 set.

And finally Linda sends me a 71 Topps coin off the waiver wire plus
single hits to my 54 59 63 64 and 57 sets not to mention the usual
variety pack of cards of the world.

Thanks to each and everyone of you. Return fire as I know is not

At the risk of putting my FOOT in my mouth, I do not know how the finest
chapter within OBC has been dragged into this conversation. While it is true some
of us do or have collected the tints, some of us do not. Ron Perry's color
blindness is probably a contributing factor to his not participating in this
As for your comment about not knowing which version you have, it conojures up
memories of when Steve Rittenbger stopped by one year on his way to the
Chicago National that I could not make due to family obligations. When Steve
arrived at my house, I had a complete MASTER set of the 1962 Topps. When Steve
left, I did not. Now I am not suggesting anything untoward in regards to Steve,
other than the fact he was able to point out, about 6 #s that I had 2 of the
same version in my master set. Btween Steve and my dupes, we were able to
replace 5 of them. Leaving #162 Sammy Drake for a quest that did not last long to
re-complete the master set.
NNow if you want obscure variations, Ken Morganti, prior to his taking a
pause, was joining me in an unhealthy quest to get the 1971 Kellogg's with and
without 1970 in the copyright, PLUS all the text and stat variations. A 75 card
set, that probably has over 200 cards for a master set AND Ken and I also are
trying to do the Red Man tobacco with the different offer variation dates on
the back. Of course I take that 1 step further and want them with and without
tabs, so 4 sets of the Red Man are being worked on here.
Bama is working on a master set of 1934-6 Diamond Stars, Chuck Paris (another
FOOT member) is working on all the back variations for the T-206 set (now
that is an impossible quest) and also the 1935 Goudey back variations.
Not that I have listed them, but I can see myself trying to get different
abcks on teh 1936 Goudey and the different colors on the 1941 Goudeys, should I
ever compelte those 2 sets, which is actually a possibility in this lifetime.
Another ridiculous set to go after variations is the 1934-36 Batter Ups with
the different color fronts. I cannot even find high numbers from that set, so
getting variations of them, is not even a thought.

My friends,

It has been awhile since I have been able to spend some real quality time with
my favorite hobby! This fall has been a wild one, as I have been teaching
an overload this term, going up for a promotion at work (Ferris is one of
the rare schools in which a teacher can go for a promotion BEFORE they goup
for tenure), and working as an ethics consultant for a Centers for Disease
Control funded grant through a hospital in Grand Rapids (good money, but
lots of time). Still, I want everyone to know that going to get the mail is
ALWAYS one of the biggest highlights of my day, in large part due to thegreat
cardboard I continue to get from fine traders throughout the country!
I used to have a reputation for sending a ton of cardboard myself, but that
reputation has been hurting of late. I hope to find some time soon to remedy
that problem.... Regardless, thanks go out to:

Bob Bannon starts things off in an exciting way as he hits me all over the place
with back variations from the 59 Topps set (four), a 68 Topps upgrade(one
of the few nicer condition sets in my collection), four Exhibits (including
the great Roy Campanella), and the topper =96 a 1958 Topps Tigers checklist
variation =96 a tough card to knock off the list! Bob, you send me scurrying
to try and dig up return fire, but I doubt I have anything that can
touch this lot! Thanks!

Anthony Arbeeny sends two wonderful flats my way, with the first containinga
scp from the baseball world (a 62 Post Sam Jones) and the second bringing
hockey (a 74-75 Topps scp) and pigskin (3 from 1974). Thanks for the great
mix Double A!

Bob D=92Angleo hits my mailbox on three separate occasions with flats of cardboard
fun! Of course, Bob was just hitting on my wife (at least hitting on
her lists), as he sent three SCP of of her favorite player - she thanks you
and I thank you!

Ken Goetsch sends two packed flats my way, with each flat bringing thirteenlucky
hits to my 74-75 Topps basketball list! Thanks for all the help Ken!

Randy Griffin offers a boost to my collection with two of the last five coins
I needed for one of my newer coin sets! Randy also adds a little extra joy
to my world, sending more recent Carlton Fisk card for that binder! Thanks
for thinking for me Randy!

Kevin Martens sends some uv love my way in the form of six Goudey looking hits!
Thanks for the helpers Kevin!

Peter Mead sends a DCP of well loved 1951 Bowman cards -- they were loved before
and are loved again! Thanks for the hits Peter!

Mike Rich was not content just helping me get closer on some sets at the National
=96 he had to hit six different sets, with a SCP each to my 61 and 62
Topps stamps, a Topps peel-off, a 75 Kellogg=92s Rollie Fingers, a Milk Dud,
and a 68 OPC Vada Pinson! Great cards all around Mike =96 thanks for thinking
of me!

John Stamper certainly knows how to make an impression =96 this time he hits
two of my more rarely hits lists, sending a Golden Press John McGraw and a
Lee Stange from the Strange 1969 Milton Bradley set! Thanks for the DCP John!

Mark Talbot hits me again with two flats, with the first bringing birthday greetings
to my door a couple months ago (and three 1959 Topps variations) and
the second sending something for me (a 1939 PlayBall) and two Pudge cards
for my wife=92s collection! Great stuff -- puts smiles on all the faces in
this house!

Thanks again, all around!

Subject: Secret Santa Report

Hello All,

I received my Secret Santa card box about a week ago and stuck it on the window sill of my office where it tempted me each and every day, until about an hour ago. My secret Santa Aaron Shirley knows how to pack a box with cardboard goodies. I was especially pleased with a `34-36 Diamond Star card of Fred "Dixie" Walker, very cool. Aaron also includes (135) assorted shiny cards from retro sets that are on my want list including a large stack of Conlan-like Babe Ruth cards that should do major damage to that list. There were some great baseball names in this group, like Cochrane, Mack, Frisch, Hubbell, Cy Young, Mathewson, Plank, Gehringer and Shoeless Joe to name a few. The group also included (35) assorted TIGER cards from more recent times that I can always use. Nice surprises throughout - Thanks Aaron!!!
Mr. Shirley also included a short stack of Animal cards for my daughter Kendall. (42) assorted British Tobacco & Tea cards were sent especially for my daughter. Now at 15 years old the reaction was not as it was a number of years ago but we did sit and look through each card and she identified as many as she could. It was kind of like old times but with little of the hoopla and fanfare, Aaron she did like the cards and I certainly appreciate you thinking of her. She concluded with "Daddy, will you put these in my binder for me?", so I guess they are keepers. I hope to share the binder with her again when I get them organized for her and perhaps have her drop Geno's daughter a note with some of her dupes. She's not too much different from her Dad though, at 15 I had little interest in cards - it was the final year I bought a pack (my 1970 cards were in the best shape when I found them again some 20 years later).
Aaron, your cardboard package certainly put a smile on my face and I thank you and all of OBC - Merry Christmas to ALL and to ALL Goodnight!!! BE WELL!!!

Two thank-yous due before I go to bed and get up tomorrow and get my
Christmas gift from sANTa (hint, hint). RICHARD DINGMAN sends me a
newcomer's welcome...oh, wait, I'm like 9 guys from being the newest.
So Richard hits me before I'm able to get him a welcome to the club
package, which shows me that someone chose wisely in accepting him to
the group! He sent a 1960 Topps, a 1974 Orlando Cepeda=97I like that
guy and I like that the set is down to TWENTY-SIX!--and a 72 Topps
pitching leaders #93 with Jenkins, Carlton and Seaver. I love cards
with multiple HOFers! Thanks, Richard, and welcome to OBC! I had tried
to get you that last 78 variation you needed, but one of these clods
beat me to it. I will get you back soon! BILL ASHTON proves (yet
again) that there is no getting even in OBC, because my last return fire
for him just hit the mailbox yesterday and today I got more cards from
him! Bill hit my favorite 50s set with a 54 Bowman #188, Frank Smith.
Joining Frank were a Mickey Lolich Black Beauty, a Twins rookies Black
Beauty, and a 75 Topps. Bill, much obliged=97and back to the dupe box
again. Seriously, thanks for your great campaign against my wantlists!
Merry Christmas, Guys and Linda! May you each have a joyous day! Mike

I anxiously rode home from my swing shift to get to my Christmas presents.
First were some very nice and thoughtful gifts from my sons, the one living
with me and going to college here and the other one who flew in from Norfolk
to spend a few days with us. Secondly it was time for my gifts from
my OBC Santa. I was thrilled here as well. A vintage Hank disc, a Hallmark
Christmas ornament of Hank with baseball card, and a shiny Hank card.
Great stuff by themselves. But Geno, being a career military guy like
myself, remembered my nautical background and sent me a set (75% anyway)
of a 50 card set of 1939 British Player's Cigarettes Modern Naval Craft cards.
A few years ago Steve Rittenberg started me on a similar set the 1954
Bowman Naval Victories. So now I have a companion set to go with that
one. The 14 cards missing are now on my wantlist. Thanks very muchGeno
for keeping the OBC Christmas spirit alive and well. I really appeciate
the thoughtful gifts. Lynn

Also along for the ride is her collection of interesting but unknow cards.
I know they are German based card but since i cant speak any foreign language

some of them to me if i want.

OBCers --

A big Santa thank you goes out to Lynn Miller for a sweet Doc Hoblitzell T206!! I added Hobby to my list not to long ago, since he's a common, but appears in a bunch of sets. He went by Doc, because he was a dentist, eventually finding his way to the Army Denta Corps in WWI. I just bought a pretty cool print of him, so I may add this card into the lower corner when I frame it. Lynn also added some Bella Sera Horse cards - either he was extremely thoughtful in adding my budding young collector to his Christmas generosity, or he's trying to get me started on a new set of sparkly ponies!

Thanks, Lynn -- and Merry Christmas to all!

Still enjoying all the presents with my 3- and 5-year-old, but I
wanted to hop into the computer/card room and say a HUGE thanks to
Santa Luurs for TWO cards from my top ten. First was a 1970 Topps
Reginald M. Jackson - he of 563 home runs, but at the time he only had
77 of those under his belt.

The second was one of my new all-time favorite cards: a 1950 Bowman
Sam Jethroe ROOKIE. I would give anything to have seen this man play
his first game. Or any game for that matter. Sam (as I've probably
said ten times) was the FIRST black Brave... very cool.

Very cool indeed, Santa. I've definitely not been good enough to
deserve this bounty.

PS happy birthday to Randy Griffin and former member Richard Hankins.

Andy Cook, who certainly deserves frequent swapping status here,
sends along a pre-emptive package. First up was a 1952 Parkurst.
Most think of Parkhurst and hockey, but this was their only BB set
and I am now just shy of 1/2 way (need 53/100). What may have been
the highlight of the package was a 196??? Kahn's Aaron. I cannot
tell the difference among the years in the late 60s. The big book
said in a couple years he is Hank Aaron and a couple of others Henry
Aaron. On this card, Hank Aaron is typed, but the facsimile
autograph is Henry Aaron. I assume you go from the type to guess
this is either 1968 or 1969, but if you go by the autograph it could
be a 1966 or 1967. Helps explain why I do not always know what I
have in my collection. Then 3 T-206s get me to having 46% of the
set. Getting oh so close to the magic 1/2 way mark, only 19 more to
go. Andy does get me to the 1/2 way, or maybe over 1/2 way,
depending on how you view the set of 1963 Pepsi Coloa Colt 45s. Andy
may have sent me all of what I now have. I have had 1 for a long
time (Andy?), then last month, Andy sent me 2 more. This package
contained 6 more (Hartman is a dupe), but this gives me 8.
Technically the set has 16, but 1 is such a shortprint, that many
coonsider the set complete at 15. Therefore,l I am either at 1/2 way
or just over. Regardless the set will be moved from the HAVE section
to the need section of my list. Yet another spectacular package at
the hands of Andy.

Actually it was no secret that GREG CONWAY was my OBC Santa this year. What was secret, until very early this morning, was the contents of the flat he sent. When I pulled out the contents of said package, I found another brightly wrapped magazine sized package. Taped to that package were 5 smaller brightly wrapped top loader sized items. So impressed was my wife that she further extended the suspense and anticipation by insisting on taking a picture. She explained to me that we were going to do what the ladies in her Coach Purse Forum call a "reveal". Never mind, it's not what you're thinking. A reveal is a series of pictures displaying items as they are being unwrapped. So rather then use my usual thousand words, I'll use pictures instead (see attached). I should point out that the pictured items represent the completion of three Tiger Team sets. WOW!!! Now, as if that isn't enough the enclosed 1977 mag offered an article on "The Bird" following his ROY season with the Tigers. Ver
y cool! I noted with interest another article on "Checkbook Baseball" that bemoaned the $400,000 contract Reggie Jackson signed with the Yankees begging the question "Where will it all end and how will the game survive?" In light of the recent Yankee's signings, that question is even more relevant today. The writer, Bob Harding, prophetically mused "will they eventually force ticket prices up so that the game will be out of the reach of todays paying customer?" Unfortunately Bob, the answer for many fans is yes!

Thanks much Yaz, you are not just a Super Santa, but a three time hero as well. Much appreciated. Enjoy your holidays!

OK, Comcast only allows me to send 4 pics at a time, here is the first installment of the Reveal!

A great big OBC Santa thanks to Mike Wierzbicki who sends me
the Willie Mays autobiography "SayHey" which I
have never read. Thank you Mike...as you know Wilie Mays
was my idol when I grew up in SF and I have many fond
memories of watching him play CF at Candlestick. All thru
little league till I graduated high school I played CF since
I wanted to be like Mays. Then girls and music started to
interfere in my life...and well... :) Mike also sends
some great cards, including a 61T, a 62T, a 64T nosebleed
Bosox team card, (3) 65T's, a 66 nose bleed, and (9) 70T
nosebleeds! Thank you Mike!! I hope everyone has a safe

Santa Mac delivered a great T206 Chance yellow background portrait. This is the card that helped get me into prewar cards back in 1979. At the time I traded (probably much, much too much) for a T206 common from the older kid down the street. I forget who it was, but it was the coolest card in my collection. I was a subscriber to the old Baseball Hobby News back then so I found an ad by Kit Young and used my entire savings (probably $40 or so) to buy a T206 Chance yellow background. This was when Kit was still up in Washington before moving to San Diego. Unfortunately I think I eventually traded that Chance to the same older kid down the street. Thanks Mac, this card brings back fond memories of my first entry into prewar and the beginning of an vintage obsession (addiction?) that continues to this day.

This year's Secret Santa was Bob Saxton. Bob's package arrived early in December

it! Inside a great looking old-style baseball tin were tucked about 70 newer
issue SF Giants cards from various years plus a trio of 53 Topps Archive
cards of Wilhelm, Lockman and Irvin, and a 52 Topps Max Lanier card.

Included in the large box were a couple of Baseball books: "Baseball Confidential"
with some inside scoops by-lines by players and the most interesting
one, "The Iowa Baseball Confederacy" by WP Kinsella (Author of Shoeless Joe).

Thanks so much for the great package, Bob! The best to you and your family,

Gersh sends along 5 woddies from '62 including a Juan Marichal and a pair of team cards from San Fran and Balmer. And yes Gersh: they will fit in just fine with my set, although it may have just jumped up a bit on the scale. Guess I'll have to get a dog now, eh? :-) Thanks a bunch!

Lynn Miller managed to stuff a full plastic sheet full of cards into a single envelope! Nine more from '62 including two more team cards from LA and the Pale Hose. Another neat card is the Hot Corner Guardians card (#163 for those scoring at home) featuring Billy Gardner and Clete Boyer. Problem is that these two fellas appear to be guarding the batting cage! Thanks much for the hits Lynn!

Another old OBC friend, Linda Fitak, also sends an envelope stuffed full of goodies: a pair of 1962's including a Frank Malzone and three from 1960 featuring the Power Plus card of Rocky Colavito and Tito Francona. Of course, Linda also managed to stuff some her other assorted goodies in the envelope as well, which is always a learning experience for me trying to identify some of the issues! Cool cardboard indeed..much obliged Linda!

Along with the above were a number of German and nature cards,
