To: OBC Thanks ,
From: Glenn Codere
Subject: Home again....and thanks! Also a few on offer!

Hi guys,

Well, Maureen and I just got home yesterday from our 2 week vacation Stateside. We had a wonderful, hectic time. Of course, one of the highlights for me was the FOOT get together at the Gibraltar show, and later at the home of Mike Mroz.

The get together allowed me to finally put faces to many OBC names - Mike Mroz, John Dahms, Earl Kilbourn, Mike Rich, Mark Talbot. It was also great to see Ron Perry again. Ron was the second OBCer that I ever met, when he visited Glasgow some years back.

As is the usual custom during OBC meets, the cardboard was flying thick and fast. I now have a very unfortunate confession to make. In all the excitement, and during the course of packing everything up for our return, all of my cards got mixed in together, which makes it very difficult for me to remember who passed what along to me!

Mark Talbot (or should that be Tal-bow?.........inside joke) certainly did a ton of damage to my 69-72 Football lists. I also pulled a bunch of stuff from Mike Mroz' dupes boxes. Earl, Ron, Mike, and John also passed along envelopes containing cardboard gems a-plenty. Guys, I'm so sorry that I screwed up and that I'm not able to go into specifics of who gave me what, but I hope you all understand that every item was received with thanks and gratitude. I'd also like to send along a very special vote of thanks to the Mroz family for their terrific hospitality and for putting up with our weird and merry little clique.

So, what was the upshot of all this card manoevering? Well, first and foremost, I'm down to the last 3 cards on my biggest priority - the 1960 (birthyear) set. Only 316 (McCoveyRC), 350(Mantle), and 563(MantleAS) to go. I'm also only one card away from completing 2 other older sets - 1970 Kelloggs (Clemente) and 1972 Kelloggs (Rose). My 1971/72T Hockey set is now only 6 cards short (45,50,70,100,111,114), and I'm close to completing my first vintage football set (1971) with only 18 cards to go. My Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings lists all suffered major damage.

Thanks to the generosity of OBCers, my visit to the card show at Gibraltar Trade, and picking up a number of ebay items that had been delivered to my cousin's place for me, I knocked a bunch of stars of my lists including -
1960T: Berra, Clemente, MarisAS, Yaz
1961T Maris, RizzutoMVP, BerraMVP, MaysMVP
1962T Maris
1963T Brooks(auto'd), Boog, Yaz, BucsBlasters
1966T Mantle, Clemente, 4xhi#s
1967T Clemente, Gibson, Mays/McCovey
1964T Coin Kaline
10 x Auto'd Detroit Tigers cards
1971TF Simpson, Unitas, Starr, Nitschke, Hayes, Griese
1972TF Sayers
1969/70TH Bobby Hull, Orr
1971/72OPCH Howe"MrHockey"

That little haul includes 6 cards from my Top 30 list. All in all, I'd have to say that it was a pretty successful trip as far as my card collection is concerned!

Made it this far? If so, here's some extra stuff that I picked up along the way. The guys at the FOOT get together had first crack at these, but there's still some left over.Get your claims in now. First come, first served!

FOUR PACKAGES arrived in the mail today - wow!

DON RICE sent a stack of EIGHTEEN 1959 Topps cards, including a Red
Sox team card, Colavito Baseball Thrills card, Curt Flood and more.
Major progress for that set, thanks, DON!

BILL MALSON sent three hits to 1972 Topps and a 1966 Harmon Killebrew!
This one has the whole name torn off the bottom, but who doesn't know
his face from first glance? Great stuff, thanks BILL!

MIKE MROZ sent four hits to 1968 Topps, a 1970 Topps, one of the last
8 cards for my 1973 Topps set, a 1974 Topps Freisleben Washington
variation, three 1978 Burger King Yankees, and a 1979 Burger King
Phillie Larry Bowa. Thanks MIKE for the great range of solid hits!

TOM MASSIMO sent a great stack of UV stuff which will be detailed
elsewhere - but thanks here to TOM!

TOM MASSIMO sends a QCP variety pack of genres. Two great 1969 Topps, one a
LL with Gibby and Fergy, the other Milt Pappas.
The next was a '76 card epitomizing the seventies: The Bionic Woman! As I've
said, my wife likes this set, so I'm always glad to get one to show her. Finally,
a boxing card, though slightly UV, completes the spread.
Thanks, Tom. The answer is: cards I'm happy to receive.

By the time I got home, she had them sorted into her various piles and was ready to give me a full briefing on her haul. Thanks for brightening up the day of a 9-yr old angel, Ed!

Erika is always looking for somebody to trade cards with, so if you have a little one into Bella Sera (horse cards that they can enter on-line to play games) or any other animal cards, let me know...

Big time thanks go to to RICK LYONS for a
unique and star-studded puffy that brightens up an otherwise gloomy
Saturday (weather-wise, that is. By definition, ALL Saturdays are
inherently good!). Rick starts off with a great hit to one of the odder
of the oddball insert sets....  1961 Topps Football Flocked Emblem
inserts. The Air Force insert he sends is just the 2nd collegiate
inserts I have from that set. Next is a 1964 Topps Stand-up of Woody
Held. I enjoy this set alot as it is one of those that bring back lots
of childhood memories. These two beauties are followed-up with 13
various hits to my OBC-only '58 and '59 Topps sets. Finally, Rick
rounds the puffy out with a journey into "non-uv uv land", i.e. the
dreaded '80s, where he includes a fistful of current HOFers.
Wow. Thanks Rick!

Hi gang,
Last weekend I attended the yearly (soon to be biannual) Wilmington show.
It's the best show anywhere in New England, so I'm glad it's going to happen
more than once a year. Now if only I could get back into pursuing my collection
on even a part-time basis, but that's another matter... Anyway, I received
permission and a $20 allowance to attend on Saturday. I got there shortly before
noon and wiped out the whole bankroll at Greg Fisher's table (Cameo Cards). I
picked up six 1961 Fleer football commons and one of the last ten 1958 Topps
baseball cards I needed.
The unwritten, but traditional meeting time is noon at the lounge and I
made it there fashionably late, but not as late as some of the other New England
OBC'ers who were in attendance. I easily spent more time at the table
chatting than I spent looking for cards on my list. A few photos were taken,
treasures found at the show were displayed and some dupes were swapped as well. The
guests at the table included Jim Hatch, Sean McGowan, Bob Donaldson, Spike
Glidden and myself. Bob handed me a check for some auctions I ran in April and
forgot about. THANKS BOB! Spike found a nice card on my 1956 Topps list - TED
WILLIAMS! GIGANTIC THANKS to the very generous Spike Glidden for sharing one of
his National treasures with me! So I got to leave the show with more money than
I started with plus a 1956 Ted Williams and a few more hits to the old
wantlist. When has THAT ever happened? Big thanks again to Spike and Bob! Looks like
I'll have to open the closet for the first time in months to put these away.

Thanks, Linda, for providing the neat account of the foreign and non-sportsissues.
Your unexpected little surprises sent along with the baseball cards
adds to the fun.
I second T.J.'s comment about non-sports cards. In the early 1950's as I was
starting to collect baseball cards I also enjoyed the Topps Look n See cards
of famous people which had a question on the back and to read the answer
you used a piece of red cellophane. Also collected planes, flags of the world,
presidents and some others. While my baseball cards survived through the
years of college and career, somehow all the non-sports were lost. As akid
I never had more than about a quarter or third of any of the non-sports
sets. A few years ago, about the time I joined OBC, I started from scratch
to build those non-sports sets. My Look n See set is now down to only twocards
- Julius Caesar and the holy grail card of Babe Ruth. I completed the
Flags of the World set and 1956 Presidents, am now working on Wings, Wheels,
and Rails and Sails sets.
Enjoy the old cardboard!

Meine freunds,

You may have gathered from the Subject line of this message that I have been
in receipt of a wonderbar package from Linda Fitak, containing the usual varierty
of old stuff and new - including of course the now customary olde Deutsch
cardboard. My personal favorite among the multitude included in theenvelope

close to my heart (and even closer to my liver).

In keeping with my own place of residence, Linda alsosent alonga few cards

As usual, Linda's package rates high in both desirability AND entertainmentvalue.

First off, I'd like to thank Linda Fitak & her husband for some
AWESOME hits to my military card collection, as well as hits to my
Beatles collection AND hits to my '55 Bowman & '64 Topps sets. Linda
also sent 3 cards from my family's homeland's province. One of the
coronation of a king in 1520 in Aachen (15 miles from Distelrath
(first mentioned in the 1100's in a scroll), a card with a map of the
area, and a card with a picture of a church in M=C3=BCnster, which IS
virtually identical to the church still standing in Distelrath (I'll
email you a copy). THANKS LINDA!

2nd off, I'd like to thank Mike Rumley-Wells for additions to my
'58, '67, & '68 Topps sets... VERY MUCH APPRECIATED MIKE!

And last but not least Jim Hatch sends my way 6 hits to my '68 set
with a note attached to the Dave Duncan card stating "nice
hat!"(emblemless). I thought it may have been an error card, but
NOPE, all of his cards are this way. Either airbrushed or he just
decided to wear a crappy hat that day. Makes me want to know the full
story behind this one. Perhaps I'll send him a letter asking him.
THANKS JIM!

Five packages received over the last three days. Wednesday's mail:

my dad will LOVE it! Topps cards from 1960, 1965 and 19xx, and some
Conlon from 19xx, plus tulips, trees, oxen, a bobsled and more... that
was all really cool. But man oh man this 1952 STUDEBAKER newspaper
with all the models and specifications is absolutely awesome! Thank
you SO MUCH, LINDA!

ED PIKE hits me with one of my top ten! 1970 Topps Reggie Jackson!
Also a 1953 Topps 145 Harry Dorish, with two interesting signs in the
background. Check them out if you have this card. Thank you, ED!

Thursday's mail included a little something I bought for someone in
the group, from Topps Vault on eBay - have you guys seen the stuff
they're offering? Some really cool vintage stuff...

And then in today's mail:

KEN PILLION sent my very first 1963 Topps Stick-On, a 1970 Kellogg's,
and seven 1965 Topps cards, partly from my claims on a waiver a few
days ago. Thank you very much, KEN.

KENT GOTO sent a handful of 19xx Topps upgrades, from a rather large
box he recently purchased. Also included was something even newer,
but with the Allen & Ginter name you can't go wrong. Thank you, KENT!

Much appreciation to all - this group never ceases to amaze me!

A few envelopes arrived this week. I set each one to the side,

as my wife is working, so it is just me, Anton, and the dogs. I put
Anton to bed at 7:30, turned on the Hawks/Blues game, and sat down to
spend some time with the cardboard. Thanks go out to the following -

KEN PILLION who becomes a double hero by finishing off two sets that
will be found on another server. Great hits Ken. Thanks for
putting those two sets to bed.

MIKE RUMSLEY-WELLS who sends over an envelope that I came close to
opening. Luckily, I saw the note on the back that says "Do not open
until Christmas!" It will be tough, but I will gladly wait.

Chicago's own GEORGE VRECHEK sends over a great looking six pack.
Two hits to my 70 Topps Supers set with Aparicio and Frank Robinson,
and one hit to the 71 Supers set in Roy White. George also takes a
few hits at my 78 Hostess set with Harrah, Jones, and the Candy man.
Sweet cards George. Thank you.

BRIAN BETZA continues our on-going trade with "a couple of beater 59
Fleer's". Brian got me started on this set and now sends over two
more for that set. The Williams shift card, and Ted hits for the
cycle. I am loving working on this set. Thanks Brian.

PETER MEAD sends over a three pack that hits all three sports that I
collect. He hits my 1960 topps football set with an Abe Woodson. He
takes one off my 74-75 hockey set with a Phil Esposito, and he sends

We dined at Sam's Town Casino in Las Vegas, hit the machines for a little while, and in between we spoke about OBC and talked about all of you behind your backs (all good things, I promise). Mr. Miller gave me a great package of cards including one 1976 Topps, 10 1977 Topps, 3 1978 Topps, 1 1979 Topps and 110 UV cards I needed. In exchange for my package, I shook his hand (we all know how THAT goes, as I had nothing to return fire with). Once again, from our Tampa bureau, I received a great mailing from Bob
D'Angelo. This time it is a galley copy of DIRTY WATER, a new mystery novel set in
the midst of the 2007 Boston Red Sox World Champions. One of the things about
Bob's books is that he puts so much thought into his choices for recipients.
Obviously he targeted my Red Sox connection, but the description of the book
also seems to indicate New England ethnic themes. As a second generation
Portuguese American born in Massachusetts, I can really relate to that.
Ironically, in paging through the book when I opened the package, I found mention of
Fall River, Massachusetts, the city where I was born in 1945 and the city
that might have more Portuguese immigrants than any other.

Anyway, I want to thank Bob for his wonderful generosity. I can't wait to
read the book.

So Aaron kindly sent him my way as part of a gift package I'm making for my friend. Thanks a bunch Aaron. So maybe I should ask if there are any other Walker Cooper cards out there? This is a 1979 TCMA and I have a 1950 Bowman for now. If anyone would have a different type spare, old or new, to be part of a "non-official" OBC Secret Santa package, I would be appreciative and try to find a way to return the favor. My list is defintiely not an easy one, especially considering that it used to
be quite a large selection and is now a T202/T205 list essentially. At
some point I decided that my cards were taking up a lot of space I didn'thave
and I couldn't afford the ones I really wanted. Since I had a ton of
50s-70s stuff, I decided to use those cards as "cash" to trade for the T202s
I wanted. I haven't touched any of the sets I built, but I probablywill
someday when the right deal comes along. It wasn't an easy decision
to make, but I'm happy with the direction my efforts have gone.

Your reference to Jim Montgomery brought a smile to my face - those JAMO packages
were the highlight of the year when they showed up. That man was one
of the more generous to ever grace the OBC Directory...

Take Care,

Yesterday's mail brought a nice envelope from Bill Malson. Inside
were 2 1973 Hi niumbers along with 47 1969 Topps. Thanks for the
goodies, Bill - they are way better than turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving OBC!

Hello All,

Spent the day with my family, watched the Lions march on toward history and ate way too much. A few fellas graced the mailbox this week so I would like to give thanks to the following:

Gary Mandell – a SCP, a `63 Topps Bill Freehan Rookie card, a card that has eluded me for some time now (Mike Rich handed it over from his recent trip to Chicago where he and Gary met up). Just three to go anybody got Mantle, Mays or Rose handy (now there’s wishful thinking). Thanks Gary!!!

Andy Cook – starts me out with my first T-332 Helmar – Dougherty. I’ve added the set to my list even though this is only a type “stamp” but I think its real cool. Thanks Andy!!!

Thanks to these and all the fine traders in this group – friendships that I am truly thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving to all – BE WELL!!!!

Hi, Guys and Gal! Happy Thanksgiving and Joyous Holidays to all of you.
We're back from Nicaragua now. It was difficult and painful and
tremendously gratifying and rewarding. We finished the wall we were
working on and fixed the front gate for House of Hope (Casa Esperanza).
We took 8 people this time and no one came back the same as when they
left. I call that a success. I came home to a pile of envelopes and am
backlogged on thank-yous, so please forgive me for responding to the
generosity of many of you all at once. MIKE MROZ sent an 8-pack (OCP?)
that wins HERO status in my book. He completed my 1974 Topps Team
Checklist set, with A's, Braves, Cards, Dodgers and Giants. I was
really delighted until he told me that there are the * and **
variations. Then...I decided I'm still delighted and those *s can wait
until I get a few more sets moved from have to wantlists. Mroz also
chipped my 76 Topps down to FOUR(!) with Mr. Fred Lynn. Brock and
Gibson highlights from 75 Topps, a checklist from 61 Topps and a 60
Topps rounded out this great envelope. Thanks, Mike. You always find
great stuff for me!SEAN MCGOWAN comes through on his end of a trade with
way more than his share. He delivers a box with NINETEEN 1955 Bowmans,
including Vic Raschi. Another humble set nearly doubled! Thanks, Sean.
Well worth waiting for. ;-)GLENN CODERE mails a trans-Atlantic DCP that
earns it's name: 1973 Hank Aaron In Action and 1972 #1, All-Time Home
Run Leaders (uh, it was Ruth, Aaron and Mays then, by the way. Sigh.).
Those are biggies for these lists. Glenn, great waivers!DON RICE takes
aim at Topps 70, 71, 72, 73 and 74 sets and hits bullseyes. Four greys
and then four high black beauties: #660, 676, 702 and 750, Mr. Denny
McLain! Three 72s, including Expos rookies, two 73s including a high #.
Finally, a single 1974, Reginald Martinez Jackson! Man, Don, that was a
sweet pack to open! The Mr. October cards I still need are dwindling
very quickly. ED SCHOTT comes next on the hit parade. A sweet variety
pack, geared toward pinstripes. A 54 Bowman, my fifties target set,
#75. Two 1965 Topps Embossed. When I set out with you guys, I had no
intention of working on any insert sets, figuring I have enough to keep
me busy for this lifetime and my children's. But dang it, I really like
these cards, and I've gotten several from you guys, so here goes: I'm
now trying to complete the 1965 Topps Embossed set. I'm sure other
foolish decisions will follow. Ed follows with 2 1969 Topps, and
then...1974 Topps Reggie Jackson! Truthfully, I don't know whether Ed
or Don got to the mailbox first, so I thank you both equally for the
Reggie cards. I now have two 1974 #130s, so if anyone reading this
needs that card, consider this a waiver offer. Anyone? Ed, you da
Man!YAZ fires a 7-pack, with a 1955 Topps, #86, five 1971 Topps,
including the highest of high numbers, Mr. Dick Drago himself, and a 74
team checklist of the Cards. I would have enjoyed the irony, had this
been a single * to start me on completing the master set (which I don't
plan to do, but look at my aforementioned plans), but instead it is an
upgrade, which is also unusual in my collection. Thanks, Greg! Great
stuff! John Stamper returns fire with a niner of greys, including
#642, a high card rookie. Thanks, John! Somewhere between you and Don,
my 1970 list switched from a have list to a want list!! Thanks, Guys!
That was my last 70s list to make the big transition.Last (but first to
mail his for all I know), JIM HATCH welcomed me to OBC with a hit to my
1969 Topps set and five more to the 71s, including the Twins rookies and
a 4th Series checklist. Jim, I appreciate your welcome and the great
cards! Thanks to everyone who remembered us while we were traveling.
Please be patient if I owe you; I have lots of catching up to
do.Thankful for all of you,Mike Rumley-Wells

Finally, RAY LUURS was nice enough to find some more 1967 Philly FB
for that 2-month-old list. Ray knocks 4 off of my WL, including
Raymond Berry, Dick LeBeau (looking much younger and much-less beaten
down as he would appear later as a Bengals head coach), and the
Detroit Lions team logo, which is an uncorrected error: it gives the
team's original home as Portsmouth Oregon, when in fact it was
Portsmouth Ohio. Thanks a bunch, Ray!

Well I havent seen Santa yet but ANTHONY ARBEENY and ED SCHOTT

which is which because my wife who doesnt thinks she has to listen to

over in my cramped space I call my refuge. I know I got 8-1970, 9
from 71, 17-73

I know Ed sent a waiver wire Pick up of a 1970 checklist and Athony's
cards took two envelopes to get here.

Thanks guy for the new cards it is going to be fun to put these cards
away OBC style.

As I still for some reason that Joe and Wayne doent want to here
about as they have work endless hours on this. I still cannot put up
new wantlists as when I do i just reverts back to old list. I will
