Hello All, I'm still having web page issues and have been unable to update my want list for over 2 weeks. My daily attempts to work on the problem have yielded no positive results and I have become very frustrated with the problem. The time I've spent trying to solve this problem has taken most of my hobby time and I have been receiving stuff in the mail that deserves recognition and I should have gotten to many of these LONG AGO!!! So thanks to: Brian Betza remembers the day of my birth with (3) `77 Renata Galasso cards (Kiner, Furillo & Thomson) as well as a trio of TIGERS (Cash, Kaline & Colivito) for that binder. Thanks for thinking of me Brian!!! Bob D'Angelo surprises me with a book entitles "The Road to Hockeytown" - Jimmy Devellano's 40 years in the NHL. I will enjoy reading about the storied NHL executive when I get some spare time - Thanks Bob!!! Dave Fallen sends a "small variety" for me to enjoy, well who could not enjoy a `51 Topps Blue Back of Sam Jethroe, a `49 Leaf FB card of Tex Coulter, a `61 Post Cereal card of Sherm Lollar and a `49 Wild West Puzzle card. I certainly did enjoy this grouping Dave!!! John Scott Gray commemorates my B-Day with a beautiful tipton-mint `49 Bowman card of Bob Feller. How nice of you to remember my B-Day JSG, thanks so much!!! Mark Holland sends a grouping of (68) assorted Conlan cards featuring many HOF'er for my collection. Very thoughtful of you Mark - Thanks!!! Joe Issac sends a lyrical B-Day note to help me celebrate #53 and he includes a `60 Topps card of Mr. Cub - Ernie Banks. Now when you realize that I only need (4) cards to complete this set and Joe pulled one from his singles for me it gives a special appreciation for the generosity found among our ranks. Thanks Joe!!! EEK Kilbourn sends a nice homemade B-Day card with some OPC Hockey cards featuring Wayne Gretzky and Pat Hughes but he doesn't stop there. Earl also includes some "Cash" - Norm Cash that is with some neat photos of Topps cards embedded in the homemade card. Very nice touch EEK!!! Ray Luurs finds a thoughtful B-Day card with a `40 Playball card of Joe Marty neatly tucked inside. You are too kind my old friend - thanks so much for the kind words. John McLaughlin selected a very nice card for my B-Day and included a SCP from the `53 Bowman B&W set with Gus Bell. John it was so nice of you to think of me on my B-Day John!!! Peter Mead also sent B-Day salutations with a Pirate theme which included a `53 Bowman Color Joe Garagiola and a `62 Post Canadian card of Ruben Amaro. Thanks Peter!!! Lynn Miller selected a touching B-Day card and included some personal sentiments and also placed some interesting cardboard in there for me. Lynn sent a Ty Cobb post card, a `47-66 Exhibit card of Hank Aaron, a `63 Post Cereal card of Ernie Banks and a re=print of the `34 Goudey Lajoie card. Thanks so much Lynn!!! Mike Mroz slips me a nice hand-crafted B-Day card with a couple `73-74 Topps Hockey cards for the collection. Thanks for thinking of me Mike!!! Chuck Paris slips me a quick B-Day note and an American Caramel card of TIGER Lu Blue. Thanks for thinking of me on my B-Day Chuck!!! With Mike's connection in Chicago at the National and this wonderful gift my `52 Topps set has taken a pounding this year. Thanks my friend!!! John Stamper also remembers my B-Day with a nice card and a SCP from the `41 Double Play set featuring Cooney and Sisti from the Boston Bees. Certainly a nice addition to my collection, thanks so much John!!! Frank Thomas "The Original" connects with some newer items for my collection. The former Major Leaguer has been quite busy with a number of members of late especially helping with newer materials. Thanks Frank!!! Geno Wagner has completed another book and has shipped it off to me. Arriving in SE Michigan for my B-Day is a copy of "Where have you gone Vince DiMaggio?" along with book-mark cards for some of the Chapters in the book. (This thank you will rave a little, so you may want to step back.) RICK JOHNSON is a busy guy with a real job, so I don't hear from him that often. We've had some great email discussions, but he's got a life, so sometimes it's a little while in between. BUT, when he does send cards... So I got this huge, heavy box. After delaying gratification long enough to get our small ones in bed, I opened it. On top were three Topps Giants, which I'd never even seen before. My daughter laughed at me because I exclaimed "They're really big!" (Okay, not my greatest insight.) Then I found Rick's note that this was a mess of cards that just needed a good home. And I start in front. There were one hundred 1975 Topps after George Moore had just pummeled the set. That would be a great package...and this is only the beginning. Next there were fifty each of 1971 Topps and 1972 Topps. I'm getting giddy, checking off numbers left and right. A few 1973s, a couple of 1970s, and then we jump back to 1974. It's a Hank Aaron special #4. Sweet! Then we're into 1973s again, which is strange because Rick is very organized--until I realize that this section is the big names! Palmer, Seaver, Carew, Frank Robinson, Goose Gossage RC, Hank Aaron AGAIN and then Roberto Clemente, #50! Hey, that's on my Top 5 I'm After list! We're not done yet--in a big way. Next up are the Topps 76s and 77s. Rick assaults both, bringing each list down to SEVEN with 76 Brock, Rose, Bench, Perry and Yaz and 77 Brett RB, Ryan RB, Winfield, Yount, and, oh, Nolan Ryan again!!! I'm an excitable person and you should understand that I'm excited by now. I'm like a kid watching fireworks with all my "OOHS!" and "AHHS!" But there's still a bunch of cards left in the box...and the next one is a slick 1961 #290 STAN MUSIAL and what the heck, that is ALSO on my TOP 5 list!!! Finally, just before my heart stopped, there were seventy-seven 1958 Topps with the likes of Marv Throneberry RC, Billy Hoeft, Charlie Maxwell (really fun to see both those guys, knowing the fondness certain OBC members have or them) Carl Furillo, Bobby Thomson, Johnny Temple, Bob Turley, Sherm Lollar, Don Newcombe, and a Charlie Rabe with the handwritten note "not playing dead." All the 58s had bonus paper on the back. Rick let me know that he did not laminate the Musial, so I'm guessing he didn't do the gluing, either. I know this was a long thank you, but I really wanted to do Rick's package justice. He brought my 76s and 77s under ten and closing in on hero range (anyone?), my 74s under forty, quadrupled my 58s, and kept me up until...I won't even tell you. It was late. And I'm still filing Rick, this was amazing. I've finally updated my wantlist andrebuilt my Top Fivers (easy ones, kind of) and I should add that in an area of my life not involving my hobby, I got really cruddy news this week, so your timing could not have been better. Thanks, I needed that. You're a great friend. (Okay, i'ts safe again now.) Those who are squeamish should stop reading now. This was no ordinary Diamond Star as it was PSA graded a 7 NM. I cannot fathom having prewar dupes graded a 7!!! I am lucky if my singles are above a 1 if they were to be graded. Interesting that the PSA lable mentions this is a green back. While a huge percentage of Diamond Stars come with different backs, my 2008 SCD does NO list this # as having a variation. I am now down to 25 for a base set, although only 4 or so are commons. The other item in the package was very familiar as Brock returns a 1963 Topps Stick-on Kaline that has been peeled and placed on a piece of cardboard. I sent this to Brock a year or so ago. Good day OBC--
Rick Johnson decides it is time for me to start on back variations for my 1960 set--should I or shouldn't I?  I will say thank you for a nice stack of series five/six 1960s--many were upgrades (and many were also color variations).
And yesterday I recieved a FitakPaK--always a pleasant surprise.  German cards, flowers, Kobe, Shaq and Michael and on and on.  Scattered amongst the Conlan cards and an early 1980s fleer pile were a number of vintage hits (along with some UV as well) headlined by a 1939 Playball of Cookie Lavagetto.  Great stuff as always.
Thanks OBC--

My wantlist has been very tough to hit for a while now. A few people have told me to add other sets or perhaps error cards or variations. Well, since I moved to Alabama, I've actually moved in the opposite direction. No, not UV. I mean that I havent spent any money on cards at all. Just working on other things I guess. I've lost weight. I'm still a scary, fat man (Ken!) but not as much so. And then in July, I started getting hits to an unpublished wantlist. Girlfriend? Yep, checked that off the list. Steady girlfriend? Yep, that one too. Last Saturday I received the best hit possible to my wantlist. I've arranged to acquire a 1960s Gina Williams (NrMt+). I've graded her as a PSA 10 (Pretty, Smart and Affectionate). This card will be proudly displayed. I plan to take it with me to all future Nationals and regional shows where I can show it off proudly. Now for some Q&A: Q: Where did you acquire this Gina Williams? A: I tried ebay, Craigslist and a few similar places. We ended up finding each other on match.com Q: How long has she been in your collection? A: She's actually a recent acquisition. I spotted her in July and immediately knew I had to have her forever. She felt the same way. Q: What condition is she in? A: I'd describe her as "vintage" with no creases and perfectly rounded corners. I'm working on getting a scanned photo available. Q: Is she part of a set? Or a series? A: She's the only one in her series. I will meet her original owners in a couple of weeks. Interestingly, Gina comes with her own 4-legged insert set. Whitney, Z, Oddball, Callie and Smokey also become part of my collection. Well, Whitney is actually a 19 y.o college student but she is still part of the insert set. Q: What is her favorite baseball team? A: Gina likes the Braves but makes up for it in other areas. She already knows she should root for the Red Sox. In exchange, I will root for Auburn and against Alabama. Q: When do you take delivery? A: I am still negotiating with the supplier. Unfortunately, Gina Williams is only in stock in one location about 150 miles from me. I will not take delivery until the actual purchase is made and the lifetime ownership contract has been signed. Q: What affect will this acquisition have on the rest of your collection? A: As stated in my opening remarks, very little time has been spent with the rest of the collection since I've relocated to Alabama. With the addition of Gina Williams to my collection, I hope to get it better organized some day. I've already told her that the National is an important part of my life. She replied "Ok. I can entertain myself while you are at the show." If there are further questions, please ask. Rick Lyons and I recently worked out a trade. On his end, he said he would send me some '75 minis and some Fleer Laughlin's. That sounded fine to me and, when the package arrived yesterday, the promised cards were there. The surprise was that the pile of cards was covered by another card, a 1960 Topps Don Buddin - a card I have been looking for since I got back into the hobby in the late '80s. Not only does this card bring my '60 wantlist down to a mere six cards, but, unbeknownst to Rick, it also strikes a sentimental chord. Bosoxer Buddin was my first shortstop on the first Red Sox team I cheered for as a kid. Much maligned for his less-than-stellar fielding, the would-be phenom was raked over the coals by caustic Boston Record columnist Gillooly almost every morning in the late '50s and early '60s. My dad used to bring the papers home each night and I would find out what the poor kidhad done wrong in the last game. Funny the things you remember from your Big thanks to Rick Lyons - obviously, I loved this trade. You guys know the drill, it was just like welcoming a family member - there's nothing better than getting together with an OBC group for an outing. The card show where we all met was usual, all of us picked up items here and there with standard "bird-dogging" to help one another out. As is usual for me I picked up a number of items from my favorite dealer Harold and some other items here and there. I just missed John Dahms so that meeting will have to take place at a later date. At about 3 pm we started for the gates, we had Maureen snap a few pic's with the guys and dealer Harold Olenick and I put the camera away - never again to pull it out. At least I got a couple pic's, wish I would have taken more shots at Mike Mroz's house. Speaking of which we made our way to Mike's to enjoy the MSU vs. U of M match up and chow down. Mike whipped up burgers, brats and had a pot of chili and some beverages all set for the occasion and the banter and cardboard flinging commenced. A good time was had by all. My fellow cardboard enthusiast pushed a number of items my way; Mike Rich had slipped me a nifty 3 count page which held perfectly (4) `76 Hostess panels and he tucked in a tough Crane's disc of Nolan Ryan. Glen Codere managed to smuggle over a `66 Topps HI number Bob Chance card which was perfect for the collection. Mike Mroz connected with shiny items that included a Mickey Mantle, Norm Cash, Willie Horton and Tony Conigliago - COOL Mike, great host and cardboard to boot. Earl Kilbourn slipped me a HOM'er SCP variation of "Stormin’ Norman" Cash from the `62 Post Cereal set. As the game played out in the background (at least it was background to me) I enjoyed various conversations and digging through the various dupe boxes that were lying about. I managed to find some Fred Talbot cards for my Talbot Collection compliments of Ron Perry. Glen flipped me a `69 Topps decal of Clemente (Woo-Hoo) and an unusual Hank Greenberg item. I snagged some `78 Burger King Tigers from Mike Mroz's box and he handed me an Indians sked and a nice stack of tobacco bird cards for the non-sports collection. Somebody pitched me a `63 Kaline for my TIGER collection that I think came from a Mike Rich box and Mike passed out a set of TCMA All-time Tigers. I split a lot of `66 TIGER team photos with Ron compliments of Glenn and I won a Dearborn Convention card of John Gorsica compliments of Mike Rich during "Pack Wars" that pretty much concluded that afternoon/evening festivities. Well at least we thought, until EEK Kilbourn handed out a self published work - "The Official FOOT Manual", which was read and enjoyed by all as it was filled with EEK's witty rhetoric, a style of writing we all know so well. Our gathering was a result of a visit by OBC & FOOT member Glenn Codere from across the pond. Given the nature of the event and the fact that we had 6 and a half FOOTs in attendance it qualified as a FOOT Fest as defined in the Official FOOT Manual, and I quote: "a major FOOT gathering of several FOOT members to celebrate a significant event or happening which would include a FOOT Feast and card swapping." It was all of that and more. It was the first time most of us, if not all, met Glenn who was accompanied by his lovely wife Maureen. In addition to previously mentioned Mark, also in attendance was Ron Perry, Mike Rich, Mike Mroz and of course myself which collectively numbered 6. John Dahms was there as well but since Mark and I missed him and he was unable to attend the post card show invasion of Mr Oz's residence he constituted the half. Sorry I missed you JD , hope to meet up with yo u soon. Upon my arrival at Gibralter Trade Center, aka big a-- flea market, Mike Rich greeted me with the OBC hand shake, slipping me 3 hits to my 72 set and an scp for my 58 set. We then struck out to find more FOOTs and spotted an OBC hat several table over. Under the hat we found Glenn rifling through some boxes of cards and I was able to add one more to my OBCers I have met list. Another OBC handshake and I procured a 56T Virgil Trucks and a 61 Fleer Schoolboy Rowe from Glenn. Eventually I ran into Ron Perry, Mike Mroz and Mark Talbot. Mr. OZ handed me a 78 Tastee-freez Mark Fidrych (I still haven't found a list so I don't know if there are any other Tigers I should add to my wantlist) and Mark offered up a 54T Kuenn, a 62 Post Colovito, a 67 OPC Freehan and a Hall of Fame post card featuring Hal Newhouser. Among my findings at the show were an upgrade 59 Kaline, a Kuenn for my 58T Tigers autographed set & a few psycho hi #s. I also picked up a few UV Tigers sets for my Eat, Drink & Ch ew binder. A couple of quick Foot prints ie group photos taken by Maureen, we formed a 6 car caravan to the Mroz Mansion for our Foot Feast. Somewhere between Mike setting out snacks and Mark & the other Mike hauling in boxes and binders for show & tell, we met Mrs. Oz, Andrea and their daughter. After we finally figured out which one was which, we entered the multi-tasking phase of watching the MSU vs U of M game, chowing down, card swapping and conversating. All too soon it seemed, it was time for Glenn and Maureen to depart and we said our good byes with hopeful promises of future get togethers. It was indeed a pleasure to meet you Glenn and your patient spouse. Following Glenn's parting instructions for us to enjoy the rest of the evening, we did just that. Somewhere along the way I managed to find untold treasures in each of the dupes boxes provided by Ron, Mike, Mike, & Mark. What I took from whose box, I know not, however I I left with any number of 72s and HOM/HOFers I didn 't have when I arrived. As things were winding down Mike Rich offered each of us a TCMA All Time Tigers set which I promptly took him up on. Mark then offered 8x10 photos of donut king Mickey Lolich which I also gratefully accepted. As a wrap up to our evening, Mark pulled out a box of Topps Mini Leaders and we all enjoyed a game of Pack Wars. We extended our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Mike & Maureen for hosting us and I headed back to Grand Blanc much richer for the experience. Thanks again to all. The only downside of the entire day were the missing FOOTs, John McLaughlin and Chuck Paris, who we were holding out some hope for. Understandably absent were outstate FOOTs George Moore from Virginia and Walter Guthrie from Colorado. Also absent was Art Wainwright who none of us have spoken to are are dubious regarding his existence. If you're out there somewhere Art, give us a shout! A complete set of the 1935-36 Will's English Soccer mounted in an album. I was not even aware they made an album for those sets. I actually had 2 of the 50 cards already, plus 3 other Will's cards. I now realize there are different years and will have to be on the lookout for them. Glenn also gave a small stack of more recent English Soccer cards, buyt I have not yet determined the year. Probably in the Mark Talbot gave me a pair of UV HOFers towards a project I have, plus a T-218 Golfer as that set keeps inching closer. The set is aka Mark Talbot's dupes set, as he has built a huge portion of this set. Mike Mroz, besides hosting the gathering, brought out his dupes box and I was able to grab a few such as a 1978 Burger King yankee, getting me to within 4. A 1990 Bazooka also brings me close on that set. Earl Kilborne gave me a short stack of miscuts, blank backs for my wrong back, blank back and miscut collection (miscut defined as being able to see a 2nd player on the card). Earl also gave me a complete set of the 1953 Topps Archives, including the extended run. Ron Perry also had a dupe box with some miscuts that were grabbed. Thursday Thanks out to Richard Labs - Been a while since I had any OBC hitson the football sets, Richard sends along a couple of QBs for the 60 and 61 sets, including Giant Charley Conerly - who, by appearances, was approximately 63 years old. Something about those old cards - the older guys looked REALLY old. Thanks Richard, much appreciated. I'm slowly inching my way to half the set. Thanks Ed. As I've told some of you before I'm lousy at keeping track of incoming cards. I thought I was doing good when I got 2 hits to my 66 set including a semi hi number and an unmarked check list. When I got the cards I made sure of keeping the note that came with it. But whoever sent them has worse hand writing than I do. So thanks to whoever sent them to me and if you let me know who you are I will post it. ================= Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2008 03:28:12 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "uthminsta1" Subject: Oversized thanks to BOB D'ANGELO BOB D'ANGELO sends two 1954 Topps and a 1955 Topps. My week has been a crazy one and still is, so here goes. Glenn tossed me some great cardboard, including some football from the 1969 set, which I found out, was Glenn's first set collected. EEK handed me a package with with over 20 hits to a UV set I'm working on, as well as a nice stack of cards from the fifties to teh seventies. Mike Rich handed me 11 of the Blue 1973 Team checklists and 8 1975 Ron Perry gave me a few nice sixties and seventies cards to fill some Mark Talbot hit almost 50 holes from the 1968 Tiopps wantlist. In addition, I pulled a bunch of dupes from everyone's boxes during the swap and received a nice TCMA Tiger's set and Dearborn card from Mike Rich. It was great to meet Glenn and John Dahms and I had a great day. If I missed anyone or anything, please accept my humblest apologies.
