The first was from long time trading partner and Soduko challenger, Steve Rittenberg. When Steve and I get together we tend to do Soduko challenges. Steve sent me a pair of books of Jewish Soduko puzzles. The other package was from OBC rookie of the year candidate, Bill Ashton, who sent along some Slurpee coins and King B Discs. Did I mention that he also included a 1939 Playball (a set I recently passed the 1/2 way mark on) and 1941 PLayball #1. Card #1's usually have a big premium, and this card gets me down to only 14 more, including 7 relative commons to finish the set. Last, but not least, Bill included a W515-1 #1. This may be the nicest looking strip card I now have. Only 1 more and I will have 10% of this set. Hey, you need to start Thanks for 2 great pacakges. An envelope with Mantle & Cobb stamps stuffed with cards graced my mailbox. It had a beautiful '53 Topps for my new set, several hits from my other Topps sets, and four recent cards of my Mickey! I'll have to research those Mickey's and get my UV list done. Then there were every type of card immaginable including Lucy, Charlie's Angels, and the Beav. Some early tobacco flowers and some interesting tea cards, football card of Reggie Bush, basketball cards of Jordan & Shaq, and some misc. baseball cards made it into the envelope. I'm sure most if not all of you know what I'm talking about. Thanks Linda for a monster surprise package! The other envelope with a nice Mel Ott stamp came from Jame Moleta. It had a great '53 Topps of HOFer Red Schoendienst! Wow! The other dozen Topps hits included cards of Kaline, Yaz, Ozzie, Brett, and Nolan Ryan! All will be terrific additions to my collection. The first was flown in from California with the return address of Fitak. Whenever I see this I know it will be great. This envelope was definitely another winner. For starters, their was a smattering of cards from the early 50's including a 53 Topps, some 53 and 54 Bowmans as well as some early 60's Fleer football cards. To top it off Linda included some great "extras" that included an assortment of odds and ends sports cards along with some very interesting non- sports cards. It was a blast goint through everything. Thanks The second package that came to me was in the form of a 400 count box. This is the same box that I sent to him, he returned to me, I then sent to him and know he returns to me again. The box is showing the wears and tears of the trip as it should be considering all of the great stuff it has had the chance to carry. This time I received no less than 200 1975 Topps mini cards including some stars to knock that set down to less than 300 cards. In addition, Rick send about 30 1964 coins and another 50 1971 Topps coins. These were both directly off of my lists so you can imagine the damage it did to those babies. Thanks, Linda ================= To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Sat, 08 Sep 2007 21:40:47 +0000 From: "John Scott Gray" Subject: National Thanks (yeah, but what year?) My friends, In my hope to be the last person from the National to post thanks, I send this email today, over a month after the good times that were the 2007 National. It was my second, but it was certainly great to see so many OBC faces again (and even a couple of new folks as well)! I had a very successful National, hitting over 125 sets (although this included some uv sets, so don't be too surprised)! In big news, I trimmed my 60 set down to one (the Mantle AS) and finished the 64 Master set (I finished the base set at the Chicago National two years ago, so the timing was perfect). The news since my return home to Michigan have been even bigger, as one of my colleagues at Ferris State moved on to greener pastures, leaving the rest of the department to pick up her classes. This has me teaching a Pop Culture class at the last second – a class that I had never taught before – as part of an overload. Time has been short, and my patience even shorter, and this stress will last at least until June (I will have another overload, with a new prep, in the Spring). My Spring schedule changed four times THIS FRIDAY as things were juggled. Perhaps things will start to come down as we begin trying to replace our departed friend. Before this turns into a ramble (TOO LATE) I need to post some well-deserved thank yous. Many of the sets that I mentioned were hit at the National were hit by OBCs finest at the legendary swap, so without further adieu: Thanks to Big Al, who provided me with two 1960 Leaf high numbers, variations from 56, some uv sweets, and a place to crash my first night in Cleveland! Great times! It was a pleasure meeting you! Sal Domino always supplies good times wherever he goes, and Cleveland was no exception. Besides the great company, he slid seven 1970 OPCs into my hands! Thanks Sal! Steve Rittenberg was kind enough to give me a 1964 Topps Venezuelan of one of my all time favorites – Vada Pinson! What a great card! Steve also gave me a 74 Topps variation, some 57 Topps football variations (the cut in half variation – very rare), and some random hockey! Thanks Steve! Rob Gioia seemed to fit right into the group’s insanity. He also easily fit a 1956 Topps Red Schoendienst variation into my collection! It was a pleasure meeting you Rob! Ken Morganti always has a mix of classic cardboard in his dupes box, and this time was no exception. Ken passed a 50 Bowman Billy Cox, five 49 Bowmans, and two Exhibits my way! Ken also let me stay with him for a couple of nights – it was good for me – I hope it was good for Ken, too! Thanks Ken! Tom Housley added three 71 Supers to my collection! Thanks for thinking of me Tom! Spike Glidden provided a class SCP in the form of a 1970-71 Wilt Chamberlain – a big card of the big man! Thanks Spike! Kent Goto kindly added four 1952 Bowmans to my collection – thanks for the great hits Kent! Mike Rich let me go through his oddball dupes box, pulling everything from Topps inserts to OPCs to a Fun Foods Carlton Fisk! Great stuff Mike! Thanks for putting up with me! I should have a little something (a check) heading your way for that other thing that we can’t talk about in mixed Bill Malson was kind enough to turn some cardboard over to my position – including a 55 Bowman variation and some 76 Kellogg’s! Thanks Bill! Mark Talbot gave me some Milton Bradley hits as well as a couple of nice Exhibits (Fox and Howard)! Great seeing you Mark! Chris Stufflestreet was a pleasure to talk to, and the fact that he gave me variations from both 65 and 71 only added to the fun! Thanks Chris! Over the last month since the National I also received some great cardboard in the mail from: Brian Betza, who sent two 64 Topps coins – an Elston Howard and Whitey Ford! Sorry if I accidentally bid against you for that lot – if it happens again do let me know asap! Gary Mandell returns fire with a 64 coin of Joe Torre and a group of two Kellogg’s hits – a 71 Felipe Alou and a 75 Lou Piniella! He promises that there are more where that came from if I want to trade – I bet Gary whispers that to all the traders! Thanks Gary! Peter Mead POSTS hits to all of my Post sets, with a SCP each from 61, 62 and 63! Thanks for the triple play Peter – sorry we missed each other in Last but certainly not least, the very patient Bill Ashton swaps some vintage cardboard with a couple of packages – the first offers a DCP of a Playball and a MP and Comp.! As if that were not enough, we decide to swap more cardboard as he sends a box that brought tears to my eyes – with over 50 hits to my Kellogg’s lists, five Fisk cards for that binder, some uv Cracker Jack cards, with a 1955 Topps Hank Aaron topping the package off! Even my wife was impressed with the Aaron card, remarking how a kid might look at his 13 homeruns in 54 and wonder if this Brave will every amount to anything! Boy did he ever! Thanks for the great cardboard Bill – yours should be heading your way even as well speak, and I will be keeping an eye open to your lists to add more to what I sent! Thanks again! Thanks again all around for the great cardboard and the great times! I settled on the above, because 4 packages in this week all caused my heart to skip a beat or 2. Non-OBCer Ralph Genova (from OCT) sends along a package with a Sports King, getting em to 10 in the set. Brian Betza shocks me with a completely unexpected package containing a 1962 Post FB #74 Baker. This is a MAJOR shortprint and 1 of the last 3 I need in the set (not counting the other variation of this Andy Cook had told me he was abandoning his Kahn's quest and would send me some. In addition to 2 Red Man with Tabs, he sent 17 Kahn's, which more than doubled my collection of them. This included my first 56, first 2 59s, 1st 3 60's, and my 2nd & 3rd from both 58 and 61. WOW, 4 more sets "officially" that I am working on! Last package was from Brock Hattox who said he was sending me some healing power of cardboard. A 54 Red man of Reese was not unexpected as Brock and I worked on the Red Mans at the National. A hit of a tougher Exhibit card of Rogers made sense. 1956 Topps white back variations of Campy and Rizzuto (2 of the last 5 white backs I need) were fantastic. A hit to the C-46 Imperial Tobacco set (I now have 7), and 2 hits to the T-207 set (I only have 8 of this tough set) were big surprises. Last, but hardly least was a 52 Topps HIGH Just when I thought I was was not too far in debt to too many I get these packages. What a way to start the Jewish New Year of 5768. Thanks Next, thanks go out to BOB DONALDSON for a DVD of game 5 of the 1970 World Series - sadly, the game where the O's defeated my Cincy Reds for the 1970 WS title. I've already watched half of it (shoulda stopped after the Reds put up a 3-spot in the 1st inning; the 1970 bullpen meltdown looked eerily similar to the current Reds Kerosene Krew). I also enjoyed the rather primitive (by today's standards) TV production values - no flashiness, no excessive crap that we're subjected to these days. The game was played at 1 pm & it was really neat to see the views of old Memorial Stadium (houses in the centerfield background?? Going to try to send at least something to anyone that did a request. I think there are a few leftovers that are going to be posted. John McLaughlin drove Geordie up from Toledo to Royal Oak where we swooped down on what is left of that weekly card show. My friend and favorite dealer Harold was there and just about all of us picked up something other from him. I managed to find some UV hits at a few other tables but mostly struck up conversation with EEK, John & Geordie. Mike and I simply hollered at each other from across the room whenever we found something of interest, not at all unusual behavior for the two of us. The five of us ended up at Marinelli's for dinner and more chat and of course cardboard was a flying. John McLaughlin added a couple to my collection with a "BIG UNIT" card from the most recent Topps set and a `50 Bowman card of TIGER Fred Hutchinson. Finally, Mike Rich connected with a set killing `73 Topps FB Redskins Checklist card, a `78 Papa Gino's disc of Dick Drago, a couple Burger Chef discs with Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter and (13) Renata Galasso cards for a recently added set and a NFL sked. Technically, Mike was right - but instead of a couple of CARDS, Mike sends a couple of PLASTIC HOLDERS packed with cards! So I get to cross off 35 - count 'em, 35 - cards from a 132 card set. Wow! And not a beater in the bunch. Terrific hits, Mike - thanks! Our other ROY candidate, BILL ASHTON, also sends a puffy stuffed full of goodies. Only one can be fully described here - a nice 1953 Topps Maurice McDermott (there's a guy with a non-baseball name - sounds like an actor). The remainder of Bill's puffy will be acknowledged elsewhere. Bill, thanks - those are great cards. ================= Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2007 19:10:38 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "Mike Mroz" Subject: Friday Thanks Thanks to Don Rice, who pounds my 72T wantlist with FORTY hits, including, Tommy John, Norm Cash, Yaz and Millie May IA. From Mike I caught what I think is a game card of my HOM guy Charlie Maxwell dated 1980 by Ball Park, Inc? Mike also flung a 61 mini Maxwell compliments of STEVE RITTENBERG. MARK TALBOT emailed me earlier in the week to let me know that he had a hit to my 53 set. What he didn't tell me was that he was going to include over 30 other items with that 53 hit. I feel as though he is trying to recruit some FOOT members, as he sends over a number of different Tiger oddball items, including schedules and an All-Star fan guide from 2005. Mark also manages to hit a number of my early sets. He sends over a 51 Redback in the form of Al Rosen. A 53 Bowman of Bob Porterfield. 3 hits to my newly listed 53 set, including a John Rutherford that is truly one of a kind. It has been trimmed to show his head shot, and it has also been signed. The only item missing is the 1/1 stamp. Mark hits each one of my football lists with one hit a piece, that's a hit to the 60, 68, 69, 70, 71, and 72 sets. Finally, he hits two sets that are really special to me. The first is 18 hits to my UV Topps 07 set that I am building for my son. The second is 2 hits to my 1955 Rails and Sails set. My dad worked for over 40 years in the railroad business. I can't wait to show him the two new additions to that set. Thank you Mark. So if all of you who have his card just print "Ashton looks like this too" on it. Earl sent several hits to my Topps sets and my UV list. Of special interest were the 15 Topps 205 cards from 2003, the first I've received for that set. Thanks Earl! Next Mike Rich sent his OBC card along with some hits to my Topps sets. Those OBC cards are really neat! Living in Wisconsin I won't have many chances to meet my fellow OBCers so they let me put faces to the names. Finally, move over Father Pat! Mike Mroz broke your record for the largest box I've received. Inside was a bunch of bubble wrap and one of those long one row storage boxes crammed full of UV hits. Must be about 800 including some of those '81 Fleer error cards. Very nice! Thanks Mike for spending so much time on my list and sending so many! There has been a local weekly Wednesday show for the last 30 years or so. The show has deteriorated to a pitiful state. One of Mark Talbot's fav dealers, Harold, is one of the few that stocks any vintage anymore. Although another dealer had some stuff hidden under the table that he brought out when I arrived. He had an extremely nice looking 64 Standup Mantle, but the $350 price tag scared me away. He also had a nice looking Tris Speaker strip card. The best pickup at the show was from Harold of a 1962-63 El Producto Hockey Disk of Keon. 1 of 6 in the set. When I walked into the show, I immediately spotted teh OBC contingent and correctly calculated who Geordie was. Geordie immediately hands me a small stack of 63 Topps, including a tough semi-high #. John McLaughlin tells me he had something bouncing around his office that he figured I'd like. Little did he realize I have the Post Bobbleheads on my UV list. Earl then hands me a pair of UV hits. Mark Talbot hands me an envelope with another sked, a pair of Conlon Prototypes and hidden in the middle was a T-218 Golfer! Big hit. Mark and I were finally convinced to leave (show closes at 7, so we left at 7:45), and headed to a fine local eatery, Maranelli's. No chances this time with my choice of restaurants. Excellent food even if John and Earl wimped out and only got a 1/2 slab of ribs each. I tried to gode them into each getting a full slab, but they didn't bite (at leaast until the ribs arrived). Great conversation, pack openings of a box Geordie bought at the show and good food, make for a true excellent OBC nite. The FOOT contingent always tries to make visitors feel welcome and hopefully Geordie enjoyed his visit. Looking forward to Monday's Tiger game where 4 FOOT OBCers are getting together before the season ends, courtesy of Mark Talbot. For vintage cards from Mike's boyhood collection these cards are very well preserved and it's nice to knock off names like Stanfield, Guidolin, Reid, Stackhouse, McKenny & Marcotte. Thanks a lot Mike. Mike Rich arrived "fashionably late" but not too late to navigate EEK downtown to the Greektown garage where we parked and walked a few blocks to the stadium where we enjoyed a picture perfect night at the park. As the newest member of FOOT, was graciously invited by Mark Talbot to join the group for an exciting evening of Tiger baseball. Thanks for the invite Mark, I really enjoyed it. Also, thanks to Earl Kilbourne for providing transportation to and from the ballpark.Along with a great game, I was rewarded with a couple of care packages from Mark and Earl. Mark passed along 35 hits to my newly posted 80T list, including such names as Carter, Carlton, Morgan, Dawson & Perry. The House of Maxwell offered up 13 hits to my 72T list, along with a great mixed bag of Tigers, including 57T, 2-61T, 65T and a 71T Freehan, which finishes that Team set. Thanks guys!It was great to meet another OBCer (EEK) and build my list to four, which pales in comparison to some of the other FOOT members. All-in-all, a fabulous time =96 baseball, hot dogs and good conversation =96 who could ask for anything more. One of my very favourites, 1957 Topps, got three much appreciated hits. For acouple of years I made some great progress on that set but the shows are few and far between up here and vintage from the fifties is rare. Some of the other highlights were a large mittful of 74's and a 72 Splendid Splinter as well as hits to almost all of my other 70's sets. Thanks Bill what a great surprise!!!!!!, JoelTammy Gyselinck Back to top Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post Messages in this topic (1) Hilltown Hits Posted by: "jimbo777777" jimbo7777777@earthlink.net jimbo777777 Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:09 pm (PST) Thanks going out tonight to Sal Domino for a '55 Bowman Beauty of classic Dodger Carl Erskine, in a condition that puts the rest of my set to shame. thanks Back to top Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post Messages in this topic (174) Thanks to Sal Domino and James Moleta Posted by: "rrrlyons" rrrlyons@msn.com rrrlyons Tue Sep 25, 2007 4:25 pm (PST) Sal sent me 2-75 topps mini's and a 60 leaf and James sends his third package to me since joining and ups the steaks again with 4-57 topps,10-59 topps, 3-60 topps,3-66 topps with a Eddie Mathews,4-67 topps and a 68 opc Gaylord thank you very much both of you I really appreciate it packages go out tomorrow.
