A sincere apology to John S. Gray for hitting my 1965 list with the Astros Rookie Stars of Dierker and Beauchamp sometime this spring/summer. If I owe any more apologies to anyone else from the group, I am just getting back into trading and collecting from a long and draining home remodeling project in which the story of contains one court case, three contractors hired and fired and multiple moves of rooms, furniture, and spaces to live in. Last week, I was able to finish out what is now called the office part of my house and the cards have made a new (hopefully permanent) home on shelves right next to the computer. I have my brother in law coming next week from Germany, so in early August I hope to be back trading after what is almost a year of strains, and trials. These are special. I only needed 74 Goudeys to complete the base run for 1933-1941, and 40 are from 1938. For those not familiar with this set it is 24 cards issued twice. With and without cartoon ballons with captions. Although the ones with captions are supposed to be tougher, 7 of the 10 I now have, are with the caption. The ones Mac sent now give m my first card with and without the caption and get me to double digits in the set. Putting together a payback package I hope you will like. A separate swap with someone from Canada finally finished my non sp 1963 Nalley coins. Strange set of 160, where alternating 10 numbers are sp's. Still need over 50 sp's so this set is not likely to get finished anytime soon. I am embarrassed to say all 3 were obnoxious requests on my part. First up was a waiver claim from Ant Arbeeny of a 1978 FB wrapper. Next, I was scanning Ebay for my fav Coke caps, when i noticed Don Rice was selling some. I wrote Don and he stopped the auction on the 7 I needed and sent them to me. Most of you know how I feel about Coke caps, so big thanks Don. Then Dan Austin responded to my begging e- mail and sent me 2 of the last 3 OPC BB cards I need to complete my 1965-1980 run. First was the 1968 AL Pitching Leaders (the variation in Topps, but no known variation in OPC I hope) to complete that set and then a 1971 OPC high number sp Sparky Anderson to get me down to only #550 Killebrew to complete my OPC run!!! So as Dan finishes 1 set, puts another on the cusp of completion, he sends along a 1953 Johnston Cookie to move that set to the 5 and under stage, as I now only need 5. I have completed very few of the regional issues from the 50s, so that is also quite exciting. Sorry for all the begging lately, but I am so close to finishing some sets, I would love to put them to bed. I think I have 41 vintage BB sets that are within 5 or less of completion. I was actively job hunting since October since the construction industry took a dive about a year and a half ago. Things were hectic at work with threats of downsizing. Well, in early March my job was eliminated in addition to 12 other positions, and other former coworkers left on their own in April. Finally after 2 1/2 months of unemployment, I found another job. My wife and I were prepared to move out of NE Ohio since I had several opportunities around the country. We couldn't ask for a better situation when the job I landed was only 5 miles from home, so we didn't have to move. Acutally we are in the process of moving as our home is for sale - we simply ran out of space in our house. With the new job, I don't have any vacation this year and unfortunately will not see you guys at the National. Things are still hectic but not as much as it was in March and April. I look forward to get back to the card stuff when time permits and I will continue to provide help with the directory listing and web site in general with Wayne. VALACAK which contained among others a 1974 Traded Steve Stone and a '76 Rick Monday. I still miss Stonie's color analysis on WGN when I'm watching the Cubbies; I became a fan listening to him and Harry Caray nearly 20 years ago. Steve still does the occasional game on ESPN (they must have him on retainer...) and I always try to tune in, no matter who is playing just to hear Steveif I know he's going to be on. As for Rick Monday, of course everybody remembers his "flag snatching" incident in Dodger Stadium that saved old glory from going up in flames that day. A fine package - thanks so much TJ!!
