When I was younger (and I'm guessing that the same applies for my fellow OBCers), being told on the playground or the schoolyard that you "hit like a girl" was something of an insult. Of course, that sentiment went away for me years ago, once I learned that girls had an entirely different type of power -- one that I still can't pretend to understand today. Which brings me to the OBC envelope I just recieved. Yes, you've probably guessed it was sent by LINDA FITAK. And most of you know the feeling that you get when you see a return address label with Northridge, CA on it. Like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get but you know you're going to like it. Linda sends along nine hits from various sets ranging from 1959-'70...with the single cards from '68, '69 and '70 going towards the back of their respective binders. She also sends along the non-sport items, the German and British cards that have become hallmarks of the Fitak Pak lately. She also seems to send along a card that will get immediately snatched up by my 8 year-old daughter, either a card from the Disney film "Treasure Planet" or a Beanie Baby card -- this time around, she sends both. There are some special mentions among the foreign cards in this package. I'm a huge history buff, and among my diversions is the events of the first World War. As it turns out, the "golden age" for tobacco cards in both Germany and Britain was the era between WW1 and WW2. Because of that timing, there are several issues that will appeal to a WW1 geek such as myself. Linda sent me a few examples in this package. Two of the British cards featured insignias from British WW1 units and one of the German cards was from a set called "die Weltskreig" (which is German for "the World War") that appears to be a rather large series issued by a number of tobacconists. I may have to look for more of these, since a German recounting of the events of WW1 will be a much different perspective that what our history books have to say. But even more than those WW1 cards is the Stollwerck card that Linda included in the envelope...it's now the oldest card I own, beating out the E90-1 card of Eddie Grant (who was killed in action during WW1). And when it comes to hitting wantlists...I wish more people could hit like Linda does. And in OBC, "hitting like a girl" is quite the compliment! I was able to enjoy my love of sports this week with the Tigers Home Opener on Monday, where I had a foul ball until some SOB shoved me down from behind and ripped the ball away with me on top of it. I was with clients, so I did not make an issue of it. The next day I came home, after the Passover Seder at my folks, to find a package from Bob Bannon including 1963 Bazooka All Time Greats Wagner & Gehrig (1 of the 3 keys to the set), a 63 Stat Exhibit and 2 type card Exhibits for me; 1921 & what i think is 1927-9 Postcard - Back Exhibits. Wednesday found me at the Pistons game and late in the game I was swapped seats with someone I knew and ended u sitting 3 rows behind the Pistons bench and Dave Bing (voted 1 of the NBA's 50 Greatest players of All Time) sitting BEHIND me. I did not bother him for an autograph, but it took a lot of will power. Friday, Mac Wubben delivered some Coke caps and a surprise T-205 hit. Yesterday, after working 10 1/2 hours on a Saturday, found a Red Man package from Brock including a 54 Rizzuto (set down to 3 + 3 variations for a base set) and 4 1953 May 31 versions including a base set killer of Linda's HOMer Gil McDougald. Strange that would be the 1 I needed to complete my base set. I am not at Ken Morganti's level, but I am getting close to finishing all the base sets of Red Mans. From Tj Valacak comes a great welcome to the group package with hits to almost all of my 70's sets. TJ and I have exchanged cards many times and he is one of the true gentlemen of the hobby. Thanks TJ!! From Bob Donaldson come some much needed hits to my 1975 Topps set. Progress has been slow of late with this one so the hits from Bob really got me back into looking at this set again!!! From someone who wishes to remain in the shadows comes a puffy with lot's of great hits. There is a mixed bag here including hits to 59, 60, a 66 Joe Torre, and some 70's hits. Awesome package but no name here to return Anyway thanks everyone and return fire and catchups for some others on the Tammy Gyselinck ================= Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2007 14:09:35 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "jimbo777777" Subject: Hilltown Hits Thanks going out this morning to Mark Holland, who sends along six nice hits to my '75 Topps minis quest. I realize I have been gone for a long time and I do miss OBC! Your message brought back memories and to mention my name in the same sentence with George Hay, Josh Levine, C. Kelly, Mike Hair, Todd Knowles, John Ball as well as others reminded how great OBC really is! I trust this finds everyone in OBC well and happy! Last June I retired and relocated from San Francisco to the Atlanta Area. I am still an active collector however, my activity has been limited since I became inactive with OBC. I do stay busy with family, golf and consulting work. I left Georgia when I was 15 and 40 years later I returned to be closer to my two sisters and two brothers and it has been a real blessing! My brothers and sisters have always lived close to each other and now I have the great pleasure of sharing in the wonderful family gathering that I missed for so long. I joined the Golf Channel Amateur Tour and I am sure many in OBC that remember our many golf outings may have a smile on their face when they hear this! Actually, I am doing better than I thought I would. I am currently ranked 4th in the Atlanta Senior Snead Division (only five points behind two that are tied for 2nd) and I am in the top 50 nationally in the Senior Snead Division. I just had to respond to your message and thank you for remembering "The Old Guys"! I wish all of OBC well and perhaps someday soon I will become more active. I leave for Harper's Ferry West Virginia tomorrow to Instruct a class for Customs and Border Protection and will return to the Atlanta Area in early May. Maybe when I return I will be back in contact with members of OBC! It's also nice to have some of your teams win a few rounds so you get to share in the passing of cardboard. My teams went 4-4 and I had to this point only received 1 package of "victory spoils" (Thanks again Mac) but all that changed today with the arrival of packages from the organizer himself, Bob Reed and "FOOT member" EEK Kilborne. EEK provided shiny stuff further expounded upon on "that other server" and Bob connects with (29) `81-82 Topps Hockey cards with a Jari Kurri RC leaving just a handful of cards remaining for the set. Bob also includes (4) cards from the `80-81 set as well with scratched and unscratched versions. You got this messed up Bob, your FLA team won it ALL - we are suppose to send YOU cards. Fear not though, my installment to you went out much earlier this week you should get it soon if not already have them. I would be remiss if I did not once again publicly thank you for once again organizing and running this years event, as always it was a BLAST!!! In another "unrelated" package Mark Holland sends additional "glossy" items that I've mentioned elsewhere but are still appreciated and deserve recognition to the group as a whole. So thanks to Mark, EEK and Bob for getting the weekend off to a splendid start. Earl also joined me at another little tradition we have and that is going to Eastside Mario's afterwards for 1/2 off appetizers and watching sports on teh big screen. Special today was (Chicken) Wings during the (Red) Wings game which we won to go up 2-0. Mark Talbot passed along a card he obtianed through OBC in the form of a set killing 1953 Bowman Snider. After Borck finishing the 53 Red Man set earlier this week, that makes 2 1953 sets finished in 1 week. I that an OBC record? What a tremendous gesture by Mark to kill that set. Perhaps retirement boredom, PTSS from his Mountie days, Blood Island or a few too many Molsons have gotten the best of him. Grant, as a clinical type, I feel obligated to encourage you to seek counsel least you begin waiver wiring your Billy Hoeft collection. BTW, dibs on the 52T. As previously reported by fellow FOOTs Mike Rich and Mark Talbot, we attended the Redford card show on Sunday. Ron Perry was also in attendance so I got a chance to catch up on his international travels of late. As per usual I started and ended the day at OBC friendly, Mike Sandles table. Also as per usual Mike (the Rich one, not the dealer) hands me 7 semi-hi 72 psychos. Being the slow learner that I am Mike also points out that the boxes at Mike, the dealer's table, are dated. A very helpful tid-bit as it prevents me from having to go through dozens of boxes that I had combed at previous shows. Subsequently I was able to do some major damage to my 58 set, with minimal damage to my wallet. Unfortunately Mark and Ron were unable to accompany Mike and I to our favorite post show haunt for some wings, Wings and Tigers. Good food, great conversation and both the Red Wings and Tigers on the overhead TVs. What more could a FOOT ask? So again, thanks to Mike for the 72s and to Ron and Mark for another fine FOOTogether. Today I received a very nice homemade birthday card from Mark Talbot with a typically great OBC greeting and also included was a generous gift of an oddball Hank Aaron. It's a matchbook with a photo of him and "Say Hey" with their homerun total of 1415. Thanks again Mark for the wonderful generosity you continue to show to all OBCers. Of course he had to be kidding ;>) Thanks so much "TJ" for another terrifice addition to my Hank collection. I'm back home in the Philippines for a couple of months anyway. Working on relocating the family to the States. A long and arduous process that will require me to go to the U.S. first and establish a domicile as a requirement for obtaining visas for my non-U.S. citizen family members since I've been out of the country for so long. And with the school years being different here and there, means I will be without the family again until next March when the school year ends here. I've pretty much settled on Las Vegas as the place to go for a number of reasons. Bob Reed, the curator of the NCAA March Madness Tournament clearly stated in the rules of the pool that the losers will send the winners cards ect. Because he's a great OBCer and as such a hell of a nice guy! Recently I received an e-mail from Bob stating he was sorry that I had such a quick departure from the pool. He further stated that as a result he was sending me a parting gift. I thought well that's certainly not necessary, but if he insists. So there I was sitting by the mail box waiting for an envelope from Bob with a hit or 2 to one of my lists. What a surprise then when when I received a 12 x 9 envelope from Wallingford, CT. Even more surprised was I when I opened said envelope. My "parting gift" was a 1971 Detroit Tigers yearbook. Way Cool! This baby included Historical Events of The American League, Statistical records of "todays Detroit Tigers", All Time Tiger Stars and a 71 Official Team Schedule. Mike's Dad is back home but his prognosis is not overly optimistic, nonetheless it was apparent that Mike was under less stress knowing his father was home. Mike keeps his "table under wraps" until 9:00am when the show officially opens so that all his customers have equal access to his wares. Perfect for me to check out the rest of the tables to see if there was anything else of interest for me. At show organizer Steve's table I ran into Ron Perry, I did not expect to see Ron at the show so we did not have cardboard to exchange but we went table browsing together and I got a chance to catch up on his globe trotting exploits of the past few months. Ron seems to enjoy his new job designation and as he puts it hes "learned to travel well". Although he points out that traveling the world is not as glamorous as it sounds as most of his time is spent inside plants that are very similar whether they be in Midland MI or Beijing China. Great to see Ron and he did slide me a few gems that he came across at Mike Sandles table like `59 Teddy Ballgame cards and a `57 Topps "tough" Mid Series card of Jim Busby that was on my Top 10 list (so even though I bought the card I still give credit to Ron). So after picking up some UV stuff and checking all there was to see I meandered back to Sandles table at about 9:05 and the table was already swamped. I grabbed up a couple of newly dated $5 and $3 boxes and made my way through them pulling `56 Topps back variations, `52 Topps, `61 HI numbers and plenty of FB, BB and Hockey items. Shortly thereafter out of the corner of my eye I spied EEK Kilborne, I hadn't seen Earl since my brother's funeral and it was great to see him under much better circumstances. He slide me a short stack of `07 Topps that we thought would complete the set (more has been written on the UV server) and we sat next to one another and caught up. It is so wonderful to hear about the adoption of his grand-daughter and it's good to see the gleam in his eye when he speaks of her. Having dealt with enough personal tragedy it is good to see some good things happening in Earl's life. Earl too slide me a few items of interest, one was an Oak Distributing card with a Doberman prominently featured which I snagged for my daughter Kendall. EEK would later find more which he would buy and then send to me as discribed in an earlier post. That's the kind of guys that make up OBC, I do hope we can get together for a ball game or two Earl!!! Finally, of course would be my encounter with fellow OBCAC member Mike Rich who upon receiving a group of cards for yours truly would lay crushing blows to my want list. Mike and I exchange cardboard all the time so I am use to his generosity but this past Sunday was a day to remember. Mike handed me the following: a `67 Philly Mike Ditka, a `22 American Caramel Jack McInnis, a `46 Remar Bread Hershel Martin, (6) `47-65 Exhibits with Gene Baker, Al Dark, Dom DiMaggio, Luke Easter, Grady Hatton and Monty Irvin, (4) `52 Topps with Andy Pafko, Johnny Mize, Bobby Adams and Bob Lemon, a `53 Bowman B&W Tom Gordon, (2) `53 Topps HI numbers Bob Milliken & Roy McMillan, (2) `54 Red Hearts with Gil McDougald and Minnie Minoso, a `55 Topps Double-header (my second one so now I'm collecting the set), a `56 Topps Teddy Ballgame (white back yellow stripe version) and (2) `61 Nu-Card Scoops featuring Gehrig and The MICK. Now if that group of cards does not take your breathe away I don't k now what will. With some major damage to my increasingly difficult Topps quest and so many other great cards words simply cannot express my gratitude Mike - but I think you know how I feel. Thanks so much my friend. Regretfully I could not accompany the fellas to the local watering hole Eastside Mario's to watch the Red Wing Hockey game and imbibe wings as I had family obligations but the short time spent together was time well spent. It really is great to get together with fellow OBC members and "chew the cardboard", I had a marvelous time. BE WELL!!! REGARDS ------------------------ MARK -------------- Original message -------------- From: "mikesportsfan" There was a local card show today, that got off on teh right FOOT with Ron Perry, Earl Kilbourn, Mark Talbot and myself in attendance. Earl saw me and immediately informed me he was upgrading my 2001 shredded SCD guide to a 2005. Mush more accurate. Next local show is May 20 for anyone that wants to visit FOOT territory and check it out. The show itself had me picking up a 64 Stand Up Kaline, some TCMA cards, A Parkhurst Hockey, a 66-7 Topps USA Hockey test issue, some Red Man hits, upgrades and some prewar hockey. Erik Greenwood nails me with 3 T-218 Billiards cards, bringing that set down to 27 for a base set. One of the rare sets, I will leave the variations to Mark Talbot. Erik also included all sorts of odd and eclectic cards, mainly of UV Cubs. Funny thing is, he did ot know a few of the sets, I was thinking about adding to my UV list. Today brough a 3 card pack from Rick Johnson of 1964 wrong and miscut backs. 2 of the cards were the same with part of a Marichal back and 1 card was of local player Ray Herbert. Ray sometimes signs for free. I wonder if I should have him sign this miscut wrong back with him on teh front. Talk about a unique item. I also got a package I was "warned" about by Dennis Hollenbeck of VCT who I have encouraged to join OBC. Dennis completed my 1960 Leaf set with Sparky Anderson by pulling it from his collection. I have looked for at least 3 years for the Anderson to complete my set, so of course I hurt myself doing cartwheels when I opened the envelope. That makes the 3rd vintage set finished this month, with 1953 Red Man and 1953 Bowman Color. All 3 were swapped or sent to me for the final card. Does collecting get any better than that? Hello All, Got to thank a couple of fine traders for the incoming items I received today. Jim Beauchemin connects with a HI # `60 Leaf Baseball card fo Tiger Johnny Groth. I do not have many of the nose-bleeders from this set and Jimbo allows me to claim this one from the waiver wire. Way too cool Jim!!!! Ed Pike connects with a T-218 back variation that I needed with an E.J.Sweeney card with a Mecca 30 back, still need either of the Hassan backed cards but Ed allows me to complete the Mecca versions of this "master" set. Ed tucked this little number inside a Baseball Quiz book which marches through 375 pages of trivia like questions, I've been having fun pawing through this one Ed. Thanks for the cardboard and the throne-room reading material, your the man ED!!! Thanks to these 2 and all in OBC - BE WELL!!! REGARDS -------------------------- MARK
