Larry Gersbach notes that he can't compete with Mac, so he mailed all his 1958's at once. Hits include Kubek, Furillo and an AS card to go in the loneliest part of that binder. Mike also added a trio of 63 Fleers including both versions of Cotton Davidson and a Jim Otto, reducing that list to just eight. Mike also killed another set, with the last 1973 FB checklist variation I needed. He added a couple variations for the 1972 Kelloggs set including Willie Mays. One of my favorite hobby books is the Boyd/Harris tome "THe Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book"...here in OBC it is often referred to simply as "the book." One of the 1952 Topps cards shown in the book is the only card of any type of Senator catcher Clyde Kluttz. Rather than simply repeating the name (like they did for Cot Deal or Coot Veal)...the caption read "Despite all apparent evidence to the contrary, there has never been, nor could there ever be, a major league ballplayer named Clyde Kluttz." As of now, I own about half the cards from the '52 Topps set shown in the book (though the Bobby Thomson and Frank Crosetti high numbers will likely take a while to obtain), and I can add one more to that total today...thanks to JOHN LEROUX, who sends the Kluttz card my way. The best part about this card is the trimming job...the edges are gone, the corners have been trimmed off and what's left is a photo of Clyde Kluttz that would look great inside a family scrapbook/photo album. The number was cut off the back; never fear, however, a Good Samaritan who owned the card before me was kind enough to pen in 133...and crossed that out and wrote in the correct 132 so I can be sure the card is placed into its proper home in my 1952 Topps binder. All kidding aside...thanks, John. Another number crossed off my 1952 Topps wantlist is greatly appreciated. No matter what shape the card's in. So it's back to the drawing boards but not without thanking: Jimbo Beauchemin lets me snag a `47-66 Exhibit card of Earl Battey, one of those tougher ones that came out in the last 2 years of production. It's great to add this one to the collection Jim - Your the best!!! John Leroux really floors me with a beautiful looking Gus Zernial card from 1952. This is the famous pose featured in "The Book" with Zernial holding a bat with 6 baseballs attached to it. If you have #31 (or the book) you have to check out the pink t-shirt Zernial is sporting. Of course, it is the inspiration of Marshall West's PTC collection card and one of my favorites in that group as well. Truly a classic card from a classy trader - John, thanks so much!!!! Well, a few of you will be seeing envelopes from Southeastern Michigan again and I hope to tackle a few more over this very cold Michigan weekend. We have plans to go out for dinner but I will be staying in the rest of the time so all looks good to hit a few more want-lists. To all in our fine group - BE WELL!!! Adding to that load was a nice seven pack of '58's that I claimed from Andy Cook's recent waiver wire. Highlighting the hits was a Bill Skowron AS. THANKS I also have a few thank yous to dole out to some of the guys who attended the Warwick, RI show on Saturday. I met up with Matt Glidden at his house and he drove us both down there. Bob Donaldson was the only one who reported that he'd be attending, but we also bumped into Bob Pigeon and Bob Farrell. The show was kind of a dud for me, since all the cards on my list that I saw were in nice shape and way too much money... or beat up and still price like they were in nice shape. I only manged to buy two 1962 LL cards that I probably overpaid for at $9 each. There were six HOF'ers between the two cards though, so I guess at $3 per, it wasn't too bad. I did much better just meeting up with the guys, as Bob Farrell and Bob Donaldson both handed me cards at the show hitting my '56 and '58 lists and Spike hit my '56 set before we left including a tipton mint Ernie Banks THANKS GUYS!! After the show, Spike let me swap out a couple '49 and '50 Bowman cards to cross off some variations on my lists. Those replacements will hit the mail tomorrow. Thanks also for doing all the driving, which was appreciated after an eight hour shift at work. THANKS SPIKE!! I was very surprised to learn I was one of the winners in Sean's pool. (I slept through most of the game, since it was one of the only windows of opportunity to get any rest all weekend.) I'm updating my lists now to reflect my most recent mail and show additions. I still have to gather packages for the Bears-Saints game and the three other Superbowl winners. Hopefully those will be ready by the end of the week. I also have a waiver wire of my own to be posted soon. (I know I promised one a while ago, but it was a little more work than I anticipated putting it together. I packed up a small tub of cards rather than the usual 15,000 dupes I travel with and headed over. I got to see Mac's new place. I'd tell you where it is but I got lost and only barely found it myself. The game was already into the second quarter when I arrived. Mac brought out his dupes box and I found a few I could use, including a 75 Gibson Highlight. Woohoo! We munched on wings at halftime. Did you know that people actually make wings in their house? I thought they were only available at places like Hooters. Much of the excitement during the game was "will Mac win the pool?" At times Mac rooted for both times, depending on his needs. Then he rooted for no score at all, a safety, and a two point conversion. The game was fun for me until Hayden ran back the pick in the fourth quarter. At that point I was already leaving since I wanted to get to bed early. I had an awesome time. I hope we get together again soon. There was also another OBC originating package in with the other letters. The puffy was from Rick Svetecz, who really knows how to make a sandwich! The thing about these sandwiches is that my wantlist LOST a lot of weight after feasting on nearly four dozen 1958's. The two cards used for the top and bottom slices were both 1962's - Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson. THANKS RICK!! The other letter celebrating my first ever Superbowl square win of any kind came from Peter Mead. Contrasting Rick's delivery, Peter sent just a SCP. However, it was a beauty of a 1956 St. Louis Cardinals team card. I don't have many team cards in the binder right now, so this is much appreciated. Before I get to that pile of mail, I have a correction to make from Wednesday's mail. In my excitement to tear open the fat puffy I got, I glanced at the return address label and only read as far as "Rick and Deb". So I sat at my laptop, all proud of myself that I spelled "Svetecz" without looking. However, I probably should've looked, because not only is "Johnson" much easier to spell, it's the last name of the person I was supposed to thank! Geez, the guy sends me fifty cards on my list and I end up thanking someone else for them. I felt like a square myself. But hey, it's not like I haven't done that before, right Tom? I mean Peter! Well, yesterday I did get the last part of the thank you paragraph right - THANKS RICK!! Yesterday's mail brought another puffy and three envelopes to my door. I'll try to be extra careful, so I get all the names right today. The first is a SCP hit to the 1958 list from Gersh. Curt Simmons of the phabulous Phillies joins the binder. THANKS GERSH!! Next up is a long envelope from Kevin Martens. The long envelope was necessary because one of the four 58's he sent was Don Mossi, whose ears overlapped each side of the three pocket page inside. THANKS KEV!! Mark Talbot's envelope brings a refreshing change of pace to most of my recent mail. Two hits to my 1967 Topps football set arrived to keep the Superbowl theme going. Hadl and Buoniconti are certainly welcome additions to that set. THANKS MARK!! Finally, the puffy from James Moleta was opened. James swapped out a few 49's from his set in trade for some back variations in mine. He also added some high number dupes he had for some I had that he needed. There were also three 58's thrown in and a '56 that I did indeed recognize from a lot I bought many moons ago that had a bunch of cards with paper punch holes in them. Brings back a few memories. When I opened it I found 5 neatly trimmed 1961 and 1962 Post cards. These sets have been hiit harder than any other since joining OBC and I have really enjoyed them. For some reason the narrative on them always seems to give you some kind of funny trivia that I love to learn. I didn't realize the kind of year that Elston Howard had in 1961 when he hit .348 with 21 home runs. Wow!! Peter also found room to stuff in a 1956 Billy Pierce card. Speaking of nice seasons Pierce had a 1.97 ERA in 206 innings. Once again, Wow. OK, that's kind of a stretch, but they did have my favorite rectangular pieces of cardboard inside. First, from Brian Betza comes a pair of 58's, which fit in nicely with that set. THANKS BRIAN!! Next, from across the pond, Geno Wagner (who wrote his note on the outside of the envelope) sends a hardly ever hit Kellogg's variation featuring Vida Blue. Geno also included a shiny card depicting a 19th century trade card of a baseball player (Jack Glassock) and a cigarette card. The cigarrette card was the nicest of the three, so it leaves me with doubts as to it's authenticity. It does have an adhesive backing and a line about how the album to stick them all in is available from the tobacconist for just a penny... but I still can't see where it says 'reprint' on it anywhere. Oh well. THANKS GENO!! The third parcel comes from Dan Angland. It contains cards that are similar to the Post Cereal and Hostess sets from the 60's and 70's in the fact that they were cut from a box. However, these were cut from the bottom of a snack food (that rhymes with 'cakes') in the late 80's. They were the first four hits to a set for me though. THANKS DAN!! Lastly, a puffy from Bob Donaldson with a SCP hit that takes a whole line off my list. Bob sends the last 1954 Red Man NL'er I needed with a March expiration date - Ted Kluszewski. Nice hit. He mentioned that his 53 Bowman B&W set could, nay should, be killed by a card I had in my own collection. James covertly revealed he would make my participation in this act "worth my time". What the heck I thought, there clearly are too many "open sets" out there, and the herd could stand a little thinning. So I sent him the 53 Bowman Jim Piersall he needed to lay his set to rest forever. Proving that crime does indeed pay, James returned fire today with FIVE hits to my want list in the form of a '48B Rigney, a '52T Red Back Ed Robinson, and three hits to my own '53B B&W set, all Yanks and Dodgers. Jimbo sends along an envelope graced by a Mel Ott stamp on the outside and a Drysdale laminated Exhibit on the inside. 2 more to 1/2 way on the set and change this from have to a want list. Brock sends along 3, yes 3, T-205s including a Wiltse with 2 ears. Great more prewar variations. Makr Talbot knocks out my birthday wishes with a T-218 McGovern and T- 220 Jack Goodman boxers. The Goodman puts me OVER the 1/2 way mark for that set. Once I get a checklist, I will change that on the list (when that gets back up). Jim Moleta sends along some huge payback with a 1949 Leaf (over 1/2 way on the non-shortprints now), 9 1949 Bowmans, including a front variation and 4 direct hits, plus 4 back variations. This set is catching up to my 1952 Topps (55 to 50) and may not be my "biggest need" postwar regular set much longer. The package was highlighted by a 1948 Bowman #5 Feller with the face obliterated. As many know, Feller is a reknowned signer of autographs. With the National in Cleveland this year, I would expect he will be around. I can only imagine his reaction if I brought this in for him to sign. I miss our website too! I've gotten a small Ebay lot that I want to share around with the gang, but I'm writing today to say thanks to the following for recent hits to Metairie! PETER MEAD, qui parle francais tres bien avec une carde de Louis Arroyo, de 1962 Post.....for those of you who don't speak French, that's a thanks out for a postie of Luis Arroyo, and he put in a nice 1957 Steve Gromek from the tough series; MARK HOLLAND, who sent in a nice SCP of 1953 Topps Clem Koshorek. Clem's offense wasn't too bad for the dreadful '52 Pirates, wonder why he didn't stick around longer (Dick Groat may have had something to do with it); FRIAR BOB CORVELLO, who sent in a very nice assortment including a 56 Topps Jim Owens, a 61 Valmy Thomas, and 4 63 Topps including Eddie Mathews! Great cards Bob, thanks to you!; and LINDA FITAK, who sent in a very interesting and unusual variety pack of baseball and other type cards....the baseballers included a 62 Jello Don Zimmer, 65's of Bert Campaneris and Bob Bailey, and 6 hits to my almost done 69 Topps list! In addition, Linda sent over 20 non sport cards, going back to the early 20's British cigarette cards of birds, and a most unusual card....a picture from NOPD parish prison, a mug shot of #828466, who was picked up on March 3, 1982. And I thought I had bought up and destroyed all copies of that photo....darn the luck! Seriously, it's a picture of a guy who had serious facial deformities, but it is from NO. (I was 14 at the time, and had absolutely nothing to do with it, for the record). As soon as we can get the web page up and running again, I'll be on the lookout to make return hits! The card must have an interesting past, as it looks like it's seen some action along the way (BTW, where did you find it?). Joshua Devore and Beals Becker share the end panels on the card. Devore helped the Giants to a WS win in 1912 with a big defensive play, ala Willie Mays, then rode the Miracle Braves of 1914 to another WS victory. Great stuff, Ken - thanks a ton! Second, Mark Talbot sends along a 1979 Bears Team Card featuring some all-time greats! Of course, Walter Payton is on there as the leading rusher, but the card also features Alan Page and Gary Fencik as well. Fencik was always a Bears favorite as the Ivy Leaguer who managed to play with the big boys. He and Doug Plank used to tear people's heads off in the Chicago backfield. I was actually surprised the mailman even delivered today, since I didn't get a chance to shovel the icy muck that fell on the front stairs and it froze into a treacherous sheet of ice. The stairs face north, so they get hardly any sun and the temps are supposed to remain below freezing for at least a couple more days. After he rang the bell, I told him not to bother if conditions didn't improve. He was still on the porch when I answered the door. You see, he got UP the stairs fine, but didn't think about how he was going to get back DOWN once he delivered the mail. I'm glad he braved the elements and my front walk today though. The first envelope comes from Marshall West, who sends a SCP hit to the 1962 Topps set with a decent looking Yankee, Bud Daley. I haven't put the names to the numbers, but that set is getting to the point where I find out how many superstars are left on the list. THANKS MARSHALL!! Also in today is another SCP 1962 Topps hit from Ray Luurs, who sends a LL without any HOF'ers on it, which has got to be a rarity. Ray also added nine hits to my 1961 Fleer FB set, one that seems to be foolishly hard to find hits for on eBay, even for beaters. Not only are thaes some of the nicer cards in my set so far, but they include guys like Earl Morral and Dick Lane. A 1938 Cricketeer was thrown in for good measure. THANKS RAY!! Yesterday, I got a small box from Chris Stufflestreet that had a bunch of cards for one of the 9-set UV projects I'm working on. I don't know if Chris was using an old list because of the website outage or he was just sending the cards anyway. The box only yielded a single hit to the list, but it does bring me to 7094 out of 7128 total cards for the project. THANKS CHRIS!! A few days ago, Brock Hattox e-mailed me and told me he was sending some Red Man cards to even up our last trade. I don't know what Brock's definition of 'even' is, nor do I remember what I sent him. It must've been pretty good to get a dozen very nice 1953 Red Man cards including Wilhelm, Slaughter and Campanella! In a previous ramble, Linda mentioned how much she enjoyed sending out cards. I hope she realizes how much I - and everyone in the group =96 enjoys receiving one of her packages. Here's the breakdown: One hit to the 59 set =96 Carl Furrillo One hit to the 58 set =96 Willard Shcmidt A pair from the 63 set =96 Chico Fernandez and Ernie Broglio, before the Brock trade The waiver claim from 67 =96 a well loved Jim Owens Some of the oddball highlights A Ziploc card of Yaz A TCMA card of Billy Pierce A nice Jordan card A Peyton Manning card (they actually practiced taking snaps with wet footballs. That is preparation) A Shakey's Sam Rice card Some non =96 sport highlights include FOUR train cards. Three of those are older tobacco cards. The other has the infamous T.C.G. stamped on the back. I will have to do a little research and find out what set that one comes from. There is a lso a beautiful postcard depicting a sketch done by none other than Linda herself. That is now my second sketch card. Linda, thank you so much. What a great start to the weekend. ================= Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2007 18:42:55 -0500 (EST) To: From: Subject: More Super Bowl Thanks Hi all- 5 more incomings made it through the snow and ice today: TJ Valacak sends a big handul of 70s hostess, including Johnny Bench. Another week brings another group of envelopes in the mailbox. Thanks to the following: John McLaughlin started off my week on Monday with a huge envelope containing 8 direct hits to my 1974 Topps list and 72 hits to my 1975 Topps list. This of course was the package that necessitated a new wantlist to reflect the sudden changes. Way to make an impact and what a great surprise, thanks John! The next package I was warned about and came on Tuesday from Father Pat. The envelope contained another 12 direct hits to my lists including 6 61's, a 68, a 70, 3 74's and a 75. Of those 74's one was Jim Palmer and the another was the Winfield rookie. Fantastic package, much appreciated Pat! The last package wasn't an OBC package, but I did feel like sharing From off in ebay-land came an envelope on Friday containing my former #1 want in the form of the 1956 Topps Mantle. Needless to say I have been watching the mailbox like a hawk all week anticipating this one. Mick has a little hole punched into him, but he fits in rather nicely into the binder, now I just need the whole rest of the set around him and I'll be good. lol. Hello All, Another week has past and the activities of the week have been overwhelming. From digging out of 2 foot snow drifts to completing another term paper for yet another college course. All that and still the routine things in life, work & family just keep marching forward. So part of that routine is that the mailman cometh and the box is full, which means it's time for another round of acknowledgments - so this weeks thanks to: Steve Hitzeman connects with a `53 Bowman HI number of Frank Shea, a `55 Topps All-American card of “Brick” Muller and a `63 Topps Football card of Ray Nitschke. What a great group to get in the mail as a total surprise – thanks for thinking of me Steve. Peter Mead continues the longest “never-ending trade” I have had the pleasure of participating in with Postiees (what else?) of Jerry Lynch from `63 and Ryne Duren and Billy Klaus from the `62 Canadian issue. Not content with a trio of Postiees to knock off my list Peter takes aim at the `52 Topps set and Red Sox Leo Kiely will now be removed from the Topps quest. Much appreciated my old friend. Ed Schott sends (3) more `73 Blue “nasties” my way and the variation lists sees a few more fall to the wayside. You just got to love being able to hit this set, especially now that the asterisk variations are on my list. You’re the man Ed!!! Marshall West notices that I am collecting `87 Kraft Home Plate Heroes Panels and rounds up (8) of them to send my way. Along for the trip were some Jimmy Dean’s and Milkbone cards as well as a Utah Jazz Sked. But the bow on the package came from the `62 Post Football set with an Erich Barnes card to cross off the list. A real pleasure package Marshall – Thanks so much!!! Mac Wubben surprises me with a SCP for the Topps run from the `52 Topps baseball set. This is no ordinary card but one of HOF’er Early Wynn in perfect OBC condition. There is an interesting typo on the back where it says Early was 1/-15 in `47 with a back slash – I wonder if this was ever corrected (more agony for all of us variation collectors)? So plenty of flats and packages arrived here in Southeastern Michigan to surely brighten up the week. My vintage sets took a beating so far this week. So did Anthony Arbeeny's package postmarked Feb.5th. The envelop was literally torn in half with noreturn address. It was stuck in a US postal envelope to complete the journey. It had Charlotte NC written on the outside..but I live in Wilmington. Fortunately all ended well because Ant did a nice job of securing the cards on cardboard. And I recognized the shredded piece of stationary that only Ant uses. So thanks Ant, sorry for the delay. Dan Angland was the first to hit the 76T set as he sent 12 beauties for that one (now under 550 to go). And Spike Glidden sends an autographed Spike Glidden card. I checked on eBay to see what it was worth and there are none listed. I guess everyone isholding them until the value peaks. Personally, I was going to cash in for a quick buck. Oh yea, he sent some other stuff too....to the tune of 2 cards for my type collection 1) 1934-36 Diamond Star Johnny Vergez and 2) a 1941 Double Play Vance Page. Those are next to the oldest cards that I own. He also sent some 73s (including Brooks), 76s and 78s. Thanks guys! These are truly some great cards. I was in Tampa for a conference (for anyone near San Diego, I think I'll be there in August) and Bob picked me up for a long lunch and plenty of great talking. As with the other 2 dozen or so OBCers I've met, and like we all say, it was like we were old friends. Bob took me to a great Cuban restaurant (where they gave me more food than I could eat--sorry about not finishing the rice, but if it's between meat and rice, the meat gets eaten first) with great bean soup. Then Bob took me over to Lou Pinella's parents house, right across the street, amazingly enough, from Lou Pinella Softball Field. Bob also presented me with some great reading material for the flight home. An autobiography of Robin Roberts and a Philadelphia Phillies media guide from 1976. Don't know where he dug up the media guide, but it sure brought back memories. Very similar cover to the 1976 yearbook, which, of course, since we are all packrats, I still have. My only disappointment was that the conference was a couple of weeks early to go over to Clearwater and see the Phillies. If anyone is ever in Tampa I heartily recommend looking up Bob. To keep that piece of UV honest he also sent along a '53 Topps that was needed and a '55 Bowman Umpire!! Thanks so much Mark! (Kendra and her family thank you too!) also to Tim Newcomb who allowed me to buy a beautiful T202 Phillie that I had been looking for for almost three years. The price was right and it knocks off a line on the Phillies list (prewar line!!). Thanks again Tim!
