Bill noted he was 'thinking' about trading his 1948-49 Leaf cards in order to concentrate on a few 1950s sets, and asked would I be interested in a trade. Well sure, I said, and I bundled off a bunch from his WL. Hoping for a few of the Leafs (I only had 7 to begin with), I was shocked when Bill sent me a whopping 23 cards from the set, including a few HOFers such as Luke Appling and Johnny Mize. These are just what old cards should be... the unique and irreproducible combo of bright colors, old cardboard, and honest wear. These are /truly fantastic/, and I am thrilled to have them! This trade has since ignited a flurry of trading activity with Bill, action that has branched off into some numismatic deals, too. This is followed by no less than 17 1950 Bowmans once again in a condition that is much nicer than my usual beaters from that year. 10 1975 Topps minis with some star power there as well. Let me know if you do like it after you read it and any gems of info that you glean from the chapters. I didn't really have a book that I could part with. You know how that is. I do a lot of traveling for work and was driving on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, when I came across a hole in the wall book store. I was led to the sport section and there it was, (well, I actually bought four different ones). This store had a million books, all the prices written in pencil on the inside cover (yes, yours to). When I went to the cash register I didn't know how much the books were going to be, then I realized his system. He pulled out his register (a book) and wrote down the names and the prices. He totaled them up on a calculator as big as a type writer and then looked up the tax on a Maryland state sales tax card. This was also recorded in the register. So much for computers, this guy didn't need one. He had his act together even if it was from the 1950's. Well, I hope you like the insides as much as the cover. Keep me posted. -----Original Message----- From: Geno Wagner [mailto:illini_grad_90@yahoo.com] Sent: Monday, November 19, 2007 9:19 PM To: jefreedman@cox.net; OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: Baseball and the Cold War OBCers -- Has anyone read this book? Well, thanks to Joel Freedman, I am about to! If there is anything I love as much as baseball cards, the Cubs, and the Illini, it's my books. That fact is evidenced by the stacks all over my house, much to my wife's chagrin. I offered up a book a couple weeks ago for one in return, and Joel came up with this gem! To make it even better, I opened up to a random page and the author is talking about his APBA game as a kid. The old-timers in the groups probably still have my APBA cards in their dupes box, as I used to send them out as extras in envelopes. Ken sent me the football game last Christmas and I've played a few games since then. What I need is an OBCer nearby to play against over a beer or two! Thanks for the great book, Joel! I am the last to chime in on the FOOT gathering this past Sunday at the Redford Show. I arrived just slightly before 9 am and was met by Mike Mroz at OBC friendly Mike Sandles table. We exchanged pleasantries and cardboard, Mike handed me a Fort Wayne Mad Ants sked from the NBA Developmental league and a couple of `73-74 Topps hockey cards with Dallas Smith and Carol Vadnais. I helped Mike open the table, smashed through a half dozen boxes and went to check out the rest of the show. While looking at some UV nonsense at a dealers table I heard a familiar voice, I turned around to find Mike Rich wheeling and dealing at the table behind me. I flipped him some items I had found for him and he returned the favor with some stuff from his recent trip to Toronto. With the addition of a `70 OPC 4th Series Checklist I am now down to (5) cards remaining, a `73 OPC Tom Seaver card hits the spot and a `77 OPC record breaker card of Nolan Ryan proves to be a set killer - Way to go Motor-mouth. Mike also included a `68 Topps Football stand up of Art Graham leaving just the Namath to go (any heroes out there). I picked up a bunch of UV stuff at the show as well as the usual dupe box fillers from Mike Sandles. I made some head-way on my hockey collection and will be adding at least one mid `80's hockey set to the list. After the show the three of us met up at the local eatery and Mike and I swapped some C-52's (Canadian T-218's). Mike had found a nice lot in Canada and had (8) dupes (Stewart, Moran, West, Eyton, Delmont, Meadows & Dunbar) to trade with me, I pulled (5) from my set because Mike is quite a bit farther along on the Canadian version of this set. Now simple math would allow most of us to assume that I had a net gain of (3) cards for my collection from this deal but you would be wrong. Mike made a discovery on this trip to Toronto that would have me working for a hour or so at the restaurant trying to put together a checklist for the C-52 set. It seems that at least (8) numbers in the set have two different cards and we suspect at least (7) more exist, perhaps more. I have attached the "working spreadsheet" for anyone who might have some of these and can help fill in some info, please help me if you can. It was another fine get together of FOOT members and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Mike & Mike & Mike for the great cardboard and fellowship - BE WELL!!! Bama sent me a Buckett mag I needed and he didn't. I never bought many of those magazines but back in the late 80's they ran a rookie list for about 8 issues that gave the rookie cards for every player from the late 40's sets, (Leaf, Bowman), to the then, current late 80's sets, (Topps, Fleer, etc.). It seemed like it would be a handy tool at the time but I only managed to obtain 7 of the 8 issues. Bama offered his mags up and happened to have the missing one so now I have them all. As handy a tool as I thought they'd be though, I haven't really ever needed to use them. I did scan the one's I had, years ago and could scan this one too if anybody would want the list. I think I've got hard copies so I could fax them to you, too. Just let me know. Thanks, Bama, for finishing this Buckett 'sub-set' Greg (yaz) ================= To: "Thanks \(OBC\)" Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2007 09:25:52 -0800 From: "Geordie" Subject: appreciations Some late and current thanks to pass out to Glenn, EEK and Cap for vintage hits to the 68 & 70s lists.
