Just got around to yesterday's mail, and for the first time in recent memory there was not one, not two, but THREE OBC deliveries to delve into. Must be my lucky day, and certainly a great way to ring in the new year! ERIK GREENWOOD starts with a tempting assortment from "North of the Border", consisting of 18 1978 OPC cards. Not only are they in terrific condition, Erik has included a host of HOFers including Brock, Fisk, Morgan and McCovey (among even more). If 'one is a type set, and two is a starter set'... well, I have something to consider for next year's WL. Thanks Erik! MIKE RICH continues with the "North of the Border" theme with four hits to the 1967-68 Topps/OPC Hockey set, all of whom are from my hometown favorites, the Bruins, and including two of my childhood favorites, Ted Green and Pie McKenzie. Thanks Mike! Finally, MARSHALL WEST sends Christmas greetings from Utah by going "South of the Border" with three non-sport hits to the 1958 Topps Zorro set. Ole! Thanks Marshall. There was no name on the inside or outside of the package but by searching the OBC address list I'm pretty sure the culprit was Brian Betza. Brian included a nice poem which pretty much covers what was inside. Here it is: Have you been naughty? Or have you been nice? Did you update your wantlist? Because I checked it twice!! Here are some cards From packs of Hostess treats Including guys who you might know From their baseball feats The A's Joe Rudi and Phil Garner ("Scrap Iron's" mustaches isn't thin!) You guys really know how to welcome the new guy to OBC and I do appreciate it so much. As I noted on the subject line, I'm not so sure that my mailman is as happy as I am. Today if you would have seen him working, you would have seen him make an extra long stop at my mailbox trying to stuff 6 different OBC packages into the box including some Brian Betza - Brian hits me with me with 6 Post cards evenly split between the 1961 and 1962 lots. Trivia learned - Frank Baumann (1961 Pst #34) of the White Sox was signed to $90,000 bonus by the Red Sox in 1952. Think what would have happened if Frank had invested all of that money in some Topps Baseball cards that year!!! Earl Kilbourn - Earl pulls 5 great Post cards including some great names like Cash, and Skowron. Best of all I get a 2205 OBC card (much like the 55 Topps) of Earl himself. That brings this collection up to 3 for as I also have the Rich and Morganti cards. This set is quickly climbing to the top of my want list!! Peter Mead - Peter hits me from every direction with a 1955 Bowman fb, 1956 Topps BB, and 10 Post cards spread between 61 and 63. Trivia lesson - Which member of the 54, 55, and 59 All Star teams started the 59 baseball season late because he was a member of the World Championship Boston Celtic team? 1961 Post card #124 Gene Conley Grant Rainsley - Grant hits my lists with a stack of "big" cards from the 53, 54 and 56 Topps runs. He also knocks my 59 Topps list down by 1. By the way, no one else really cares but Rip Repulski (1956 Topps #201) was from Sauk Rapids MN, my home state. Aaron Shipley - Aaron pulls a great looking 61 Post card of Gerry Staley. did you know Staley established a new pitching record for game appearances in 1959 with a whopping 67 appearances. T.J. Valacak - T.J. hits me for the second time and this time knocks off another 56 Topps (Bob Hale) and pulls a 70 Kellogg's Wally Bunker in 3D of course. It wasn't until I went to the post office on Wednesday (not to complain about the lack of mail, but to send a package) that I realized that the mailman was taking the day off in honor of President Ford. Therefore, yesterday brought the motherlode of cardboard and today brought a suitable followup. Among the eBay winnings were three envelopes from OBC land, so let's get right to the gratitude: Carlos Alcazar tipped me off about the SCP he sent, saying he had a football card he didn't know what to do with and if I knew anyone that needed it. He sent me a 1960 Fleer Hank Stram that was supposed to go to 'my friend' until I realized that it was the last card I needed for my set. Well, he isn't THAT GOOD of a friend ;-) THANKS CARLOS for killing my set!! Next up are two envelopes that take advantage of my latest wantlist update. If you can't hit my list now, you may never be able to hit it. Bill Malson and TJ Valacak both send a pair of 1958 Topps baseball. TJ adds a pitcher and catcher for the Giants in the form of Ray Katt and Curt Barclay. THANKS TJ!! Bill pulls Bill Fisher and Gail Harris from the old dupes box and they both find an empty spot in my binder. THANKS BILL!! For the record, if you're wondering what the wantlist looks like now, the 1800+ card lot I landed on eBay a couple weeks ago has prompted me to start second sets from 1956 and 1958 (with no variations whatsoever - once down that road was plenty, trust me). That coupled with the recently started 1962 set mak es my list the easiest to hit since I joined the group IMHO. I also found a similar, but smaller lot from John Morrison on eBay (300 tipton cards from 1960-69 with a few stars) that padded the dupes box. If you're looking for a low grade starter lot on any Topps baseball set from 1961-1973, give me a holler (or send an e-mail if you're not standing outside my house). I recently requested a 78 OPC Joe Rudi off of Gersh's waiver wire. Well today it arrived along with a few other cards I didn't request and a note that took me a senior minute to figure out. Knowing Gersh's subtle humor as we do, I knew there was more to his quote "EEK, How could I refuse a sixty year old senior citizen" then met the eye. Finally it hit me! When I requested the Rudi card, I mentioned to Gersh that Joe and I shared the same birthdate. Gersh correctly deduced that since Rudi turned 60 in September then that means so did I. Thanks for the brain tease Gersh, and of course the Rudi, two 75 mini Tigers and a 72 Tug McGraw. An interesting tidbit on Rudi. This old man's memory is a fading, but I think I recall opening up some packs at the end of the season and commenting that NOW they tell me who in the Tigers team set. Depending on when they decide who is what player number, it might not have been possible to issue them earlier in the season, until they knew exactly who had what number. In subsequent years, they did not have different series, they were all issued at once, so they could do team checklist cards from the beginning. This explains why the 73 checklists are so much more difficult than the 74s. It does not explain why there are 2 different backs for 73 (* or ** in the copyright). Also, the 73 checklists should be considered scarcer than regular high numbers because I think there were 10 cards plus a checklist in the pack (can anyone else verify that?). Therefore, if even distribution, it would take 13.2 packs to get all the high numbers but 24 packs to get all the checklists. Even if it was 9 cards plus the checklist, it would be 14.7 for the cards to the 24 for the checklists. It would have to get down to 5 (26.4) or 6 (22) cards to 1 checklist to be relatively even. Personally, I still try and pick up unmarked nice shape 73 checklists for under $1 if/when I see them, since I think they are relatively scarce. The first is an envelope from Don Rice with a bunch of Post cards. Six of them fromt the 1961 series and a single 1962 Post hit. I love the narrative portion of the Post cards as they often have such great trivia. My favorite from this group was from the 1961 Roy Sievers (#26) which stated that Roy's signing bonus with the St. Louis Cardinals was a pair of "baseball shoes". It might not sound like much, but I know I would have signed for even less if anyone would have come calling on me (but the shoes would have an added bonus) The second package was from James Moleta. James put together a nice package with some great variety. He not only sent a few 54 Topps, 5 Post bb cards, but also two mystery Fleer cards from the 1960 run. These cards are nearly flawless in the front, but have been clinging to some glue in a scrapbook. James questioned what numbers the the Tony Lazzeri and Waite Hoyt cards would have been if the numbers were readable. With the help of e-Bay I can tell you the numbers were once 31 and 69 respectively. Unfortunately, I'm not Ken Morganti so the numbers didn't just fall off my tongue without a little research. Friday's mail brought a package from ERIK GREENWOOD, with a handful of Topps: 54, 58, 60x2, 63, 66, 68x2; also three 1978 Burger King Yankees and two 1978 O-Pee-Chee cards. Thanks, ERIK! Saturday's mail yielded a package from LARRY GERSBACH, including single cards from 1974, 77, and 78 O-Pee-Chee and my very first 1971 Topps Coin! Thanks, GERSH! Monday's mail: My wife said, "All I got was junk and all you got was cards! No fair! Well, at least there weren't any bills." But the contents of these two packages were astounding! T.J. VALACAK unloaded a 1969 Deckle Richie Allen and 33 1971 Topps, as well as a nice stack of unmentionable cards. Thanks, T.J., and thanks to your family for getting you cards just to send to ME! Then the next package came from the NEW GUY - RICK JOHNSON! He's off to a great start, sending me eight 1957 Topps and three hits to my short 1975 Topps list: Tommy John, Gaylord Perry, and a Gary Carter rookie! Thanks, RICK! The first is from Greg Conway, who becomes the first to hit my 1956 set. He sends along a pair of cards that he claims are in 'good' shape. Well, they fit in very nicely with what's already in the binder, so they look 'good' to me. One of the cards is NL Prez Warren Giles too. THANKS YAZ!! I also recieved a six pack for the second day in a row. You'd think I'm becoming an alcoholic, but these are all hits to my 1958 Topps quest and are non-alcoholic as far as I can tell. Erik Greenwood sponsored this letter. The cards feature a Del and a Dave (last names withheld due to paper loss on the front). Three of the other cards appear to be cut from the same sheet, since they all look like they were miscut the same way - it does provide a nice space for the new team to be written in though, which was the case for two of the three. They all look great in their new binder slots. THANKS ERIK!! Ken McBride is the young hurlers name and he had just finished a 12-15 season. Thanks Kevin! Thanks to AARON SHIRLEY for some great oddballs. Aaron sent me an email asking if I was interested in a Yaz and Fisk Islay disc. Once I said yes, he twisted my arm into taking a starter set that Sutton, Carlton, Palmer, Hunter, and Stargell. That's some real HOF power right there. Aaron also throws in some uv Red/White Sox oddballs. Thanks Aaron! BAMA had put some cards out on waivers and in the grouping he had some 1970's available. I was able to pick up six cards to upgrade on my set. Let me know if you need any of the following; 5 79 182 218 375. Thanks Bama! Thanks to ED SCHOTT who hits my 62 set with a triple. Hal Kolstad, Jim O'Toole, aned CUrt Simmons are now tucked away in the 62 set. Ed also hits a few early 80 uv sets. Thanks for the shots Ed! Finally, ERIK GREENWOOD sends out a nice package. Erik starts me off with 50 cards from the 1979 set. These beauties look like they are pack fresh and will definitely be replacing some of their twins currently in the box. He hits my 57 set with 5 cards. The Billy HOeft and the Ray Crone are of the updated series, as new teams have been penned in by previous owners. A 58 AL Dark is also included in teh envelope. Erik hits my 59 set with a three pack, including two high numbers. The Wes Convington card is a rare dual signatrure card, The front appears to be signed by Zach, and the back is signed by Melon in 1962. Speaking of 62, I also receive a 62 strikeout leaders card from the 63 set. It has pic of Drysdale, Gibson, and Koufax on it. Rounding out the regular issued Topps cards is a 1965 Warren Spahn. I believe someone may have had Spahn on a Strat-O team in years past. I believe this is true because someone has decided to apply many rounds of black marker to the face of Spahn. (I can remember wanting to do that to a Bret Saberhagen card back in my Strat-O days as well.) FInally, Erik had posted some Hostess/Twinkies. I let him know that I would be interested in any starter sets that went unclaimed. Well, there must be over 130 cards sitting in front of me. Wow! I did not expect this at all. I will have to sort these out and add to my wants page. Thank you Eric! Gents, thank you so much. I love all the cardboard. TJ VALACAK sends an excellent SCP, a 1971 OPC hit from the rarified numbers--and

TJ includes a note that it's nice to finally hit my list. From my perspective,

Three envelopes found their way to my mailbox the last 2 days. First a
puffy from the Rookie, RICK JOHNSON who did some serious damage to my
58T & 72T sets. Using 9 cards from the 58T set Rick creates a new Deli
Sandwich, the Willard. Sandwiched between Willard Schmidt and Willard
Nixon were guys like Mueller, Avila & Delock. Rick did the most damage
to my 72T set sending 24 psychos my way. Included was my second Merv
Rettenmund card in this week. This works great since I just added Merv
to my HOM/HOF binder I now have a card for that and the 72 binder. Other
72 notables were the Yankees Team card, Tommy John, Tiger Mike Kilkenny,
Rookie Richie Zisk & Matty Alou. THANKS for a great puffy Rick, it
definitely deserves a MASH rating: Much Appreciated Solid Hits!!

Next came an envelope from fellow FOOT MARK TALBOT who sends a thank you
note with some very kind words inside. I appreciated them very much,
Mark. You would've done the same for me, and in fact you have. Also
inside Mark's envelope were 4 non-sports cards, including a couple
Wings. No not the Hockey variety (although they were Flyers) but rather
Airplanes. There was also card of my favorite frontiersman Davy
Crockett. Thanks much Mark!!
As an aside, I knew without looking that Wes Parker played Davey, but I
can't seem to remember who played Daniel Boone. Who was that guy?

The last envelope came from Sharon's better half whose identity will be
revealed on that other server along with the contents of said envelope.

Subject: Overdue Thanks Go Out To....

My friends,

I find my trading interests taking even larger swings. From the first part
of December to the last couple of days I have thought little about sending
or getting cards. Of late, however, I have been a furry of activity (in
part thanks to my wife getting me a set of scales to weigh packages at
home). With nearly 100 packages going out in the next 48 hours, I hope to
start the process of repaying the collecting kindnesses of my brothers and
sisters of cardboard (but not even beginning to scratch the surface, of
course). Speaking of kindness, thanks are due to the following fine

Andy Cook wows me with four hits to a set that is slowly but surely coming
along -- the 49 Bowman set. I see that the new Bowman Heritage set this
year is modeled after these same 49s -- I prefer the original! Thanks for
the pulled quad!

Brian Betza sends a nice flat of Hostess cards (nine total from 75, 77 and
79, with the highlight being a 79 Don Sutton)! Great stuff Brian! Thanks!

Randy Griffin offered his personal holiday greetings, including a 1978 Topps
pigskin card of Dolphin RB Norm Bulaich -- thanks for thinking of me Randy!

Peter Mead sent a smorgasbord of hits my way, with two 52 Bowman, two Golden
Press hits (Dizzy Vance and Chief Bender), a 63 Post Wes Covington, and two
70s pigskin hits! Thanks for the great mix of hits Peter!

Longtime trading partner Bob Bannon hits me upside the head where it hurts
-- UPGRADES! He sends two upgrades (including Curt Flood) for perhaps the
nicest looking of all my sets -- the 68 Topps edition! I do not know how it
happened, but that set is head and shoulders above even my more recent sets
in terms of condition, and Bob makes it even nicer!

Brock Hattox hits me with a couple of packages in the last month -- the
first bringing a Red Man of Billy Cox, and the other bringing a starter set
for the 49 Leaf set, including a very nice Stan Musial! An amazing package
from an amazing fella -- look for more of my return fire for that group in
the next week Brock, and thanks again!

Our own Bama, John Harrell, kindly sends a DCP from the popular Red Heart
set, including a Bob Lemon that seems to have lost his head (or, at least a
fair portion of his hair in a tragic barbershop accident)! No worries,
however, as I happen to know the phone number for the hair club for men –
perhaps Lemon could become a member…. Thanks for the great cards Bama!

Bob Reed provide a flat that covers a great range of cardboard history,
hitting the 48 and 50 Bowman sets and ending with the 77 and 79 Hostess sets
(the 77 was of the incomparable Yaz)! Thanks Bob!

Ken Morganti sends some dealer scum cards my way in the form of seventeen
Red Man cards (featuring Ashburn and Leo Durocher)! Never one to be
satisfied with just business, Ken includes some pleasure treasure along for
the ride, with three neatly trimmed 50 Bowmans, a group of four 1960 Leafs
(with Whitey Herzog and Jim Gilliam), and a 1969 variation of Diego Segui!
What a great group of cardboard Ken – THANKS!

Erik Greenwood also overwhelms the senses with his latest puffy of over
thirty-five Hostess hits from 75 through 79! Not just anyone, these cards
included the likes of Ryan, Gaylord Perry, Palmer, Stargell, Sutton, Dent,
Brock and Yaz! What a wonderful group of cards to slide into the empty
slots in the binder – thanks Eric!

Lastly, John Leroux took part in the OBC tradition of exchanging secret
holiday presents -- he was the one sending me a surprise -- and what a
surprise it was! Not only did he finish two sets (the 80 Kellogg's with Jim
Palmer and an illegal uv hockey set), but he also including Molitor and Jack
Clark from the 79 Kellogg's set, more naughty uv cards, and TWO 1953 Topps
high numbers (Al Aber and Charlie Silvera)! Now that was a Christmas
present I can get into! Thanks for going above and beyond the call of duty
my friend!

Thanks again all around for the great cardboard pleasures!

Be happy,

John Scott Gray

Today I came home from a long day at the office to a SCP of a 1954
Red Man from Josh Levine.
The day started of with breakfast with Peter Mead. More like, I had
breakfast and Peter had a cup of tea. You see, Peter spent the nite
at KOOCH. The new name for Chateau Rich. KOOCH King Of Oddball
Cards House. Peter winged into twon yesterday and I picked him up at
teh airport. We then went to a local card shop where Peter got a few
small hockey hits. Then I took him to what was the most disgusting
card shop in metro Detroit. No more as the dealer said he no longer
deals in cards. He still had some in a display case, including 73
high numbers, but said even if I was interested in something he woul
not pull them out. This shop has to be seen to be beleived. Only 1
person down an aisle at a time, smoke filled, etc. Other than the
smoke it was good training for Peter seeing my house. From there we
made it to the regular Wednesday show. This show used to be
worthwhile, but has rapidly declined in the last year. Very few
dealers yesterday, and only a couple that had any vintage. I did
pick up a 1969 Topps Poster wrapper with a Tipton 55 Bowman Ashburn
for a total of $4. I also got 3 Volpe Red Wings cups for $5, but
these were cracked. Mark Talbot met us at the show and we went out
to dinner. I got kudos for picking a popular restaurant this time,a
s we all enjoyed burgers on Peter's company. At the restaurant,
Peter and Mark decided to pass out OBC welcomes. Mark hit me with
yet 2 more T-218s. Peter had a 62 Jell-o last card #200, 54 Johnston
Cookie first card #1 a Dan Dee LaPalm and a type card I could not
identify - American Tract Society #52 Alou. Back at my house he gave
me his bookmark, which happened to be a Cracker Jack Legends II of
Bench. Mark followed us back to my house and we looked at cards,
watched the Pistons lose and listended to a tape of me on air with
Danny Bonaduce. Great seeing Mark smiling again and having Peter in
town. Sorry the visit was so short. Peter braved the clutter to get
to look through all sorts of cards.

Hi gang,
A trio of packages have arrived recently. For two consecutive days, I
recieved a letter from Mac Wubben containing 1958 Topps Update cards that Mac
claims are from the Joe McIlvaine collection. Apparently, Joe liked to put the new
team name at the bottom of the card in thick black magic marker. Well, I used
one to cross off five more numbers from the list including Hank Sauer. THANKS
The other arrivalcomes from Geordie Calvert, who assisted me with an eBay
purchase using his Paypal account. Along with the 1963 Fleer FB SP of
Dougherty that I bought are almost a dozen more '58's including three team cards,
which are the opposite end of the spectrum from Mac's cards (and conditionwise
from the rest of my set). I had to put a few creases in them and mark the team
cards to make them fit in ;-) THANKS GEORDIE!! TAYL,

Ken M

Late week thanks is in order for these OBCers who stuffed my mailbox...

Andy Cook sends along a great SCP to one of my pre-war sets: the W513 strip card set. This list is now one card shorter as Andy contributes an Earl Coombs to the cause! A great card that will fit in very nicely with my set. Thank you Andy!

Dave Hornish sent a puffy to the Granite State packed full of cardboard...a whopping 73 cards in all!! From the 1960 Topps set there are 20 cards including a St. Louis team card and a Harvey Haddix. Then from the1962 Topps there is a huge pile of 53 cards, including an Earl Averill. I'm trying really hard to look for creases or even rounded corners on any of these but I ain't having much luck - real nice looking cards! Dave called it a "care package" - looks like he took care of a big chunk of my wantlists! A great package indeed. Mucho gracias Dave!

Happy Collecting!

Subject: The King of oddballs and a few other thanks

A couple of thanks before I relate my trip to Detroit.

Brian Betza continues to send those small early 1950 Bowmans to me. This time a great Joe Haynes finds its way into my binder.

Rookie of the year Rick Johnson sends a couple 52 Topps (one being the immortal Matt Batts) and a 55 Bowman football of Breezy Reid. The Bowman list now is at twelve cards. Thanks Rick--but mine was a welcome package. No payback was necessary--but I am grateful for the hits.

I had the distinct pleasure of spending Wednesday night with Mike Rich and Mark Talbot at the Kooch (as Mike has described the "King of oddballs card house"). It is a great hobby that becomes even more enjoyable when you can actually meet up with some of your OBC card partners.

Mike picked me up at the Detroit airport-and a couple of shops and a small show later we met up with Mark. Mark kept digging deep into his pockets--first for a 55 Bowman football Bobby Layne, then a couple of 52 American League Red Mans, then a few stars from his Maryland 1970 OPC baseball set (Killebrew, Niekro, and Billy Williams), last but not least a small stack of about 100 1976 OPCs. I guess it is time to list another set.

Then we headed to the KOOCH. Mike has cards and then some--and after all he is the King of Oddballs. Can't believe I actually stumped him with a card. The King buried me with treats--a couple of 53 high numbers, another 55 Bowman footballer, a 64 Blanda, a 75 Lynn Swann, hitting short lists left and right. Earlier in the day I picked up a couple of 70-71 Topps hockey cards including a Gilbert Perreault at a local shop--not to be outdone Mike hands me a Gordie Howe from the same year and that list is down to seven (mostly commons). Mike adds a few hits to my 63 Jello set--simply Banks, Snider, Groat and Al Kaline.

Thanks Mark and Mike for so much more than the cards. A great evening with a couple of friends.

recently added the 52 set to my list. For years I've had a partial set--I

First, some thanks to pass out:

Mac Wubben - a little DCP! First, a nosebleeder black beauty (Mets team card)
followed up by a nosebleeder from the birth year '66 set. Thanks Mac!

Linda Fitak - I made a claim from the waiver wire for a '66 Don Sutton/BillSinger
RC, and got a whole lotta other cool stuff too. Another RC from '66
(Red Sox), a hit to the '65 list, and a hit to the upper reaches of the high-numbered
psychos. Along for the ride were a wonderfully eclectic assortment
of cards. I'll identify what I can:

1930s Jasmatzi (Germany) Cigarettes Hans Albers - actor
1933 Lloyd Zigaretten (Germany) Die Welthandelsflotte (The World's MerchantFleet)
#44 - haven't been able to identify the exact ship pictured
1935 Gallaher Cigarettes Film Partners - Charles Butterworth and Una Merkelin
"Baby Face Harrington"
1936 Will's Cigarettes - Household Hints - Cleaning Pewter
1939 Will's Cigarettes - Garden Flowers - Stock
1927 Cavanders Cigarettes - Beauty Spots of Great Britain - In the Pass of Killiecrankie
1935 Eckstein-Halpaus Cigarettes "The Post War Period 1918-1934 Ivar Kreuger
(Swedish financier, entrepreneur and industrialist)
1933 Eckstein-Halpaus Cigarettes "The Artistic Dance" Gsovsky Ballet School

And some other assorted UV stuff, including some 1990 Target Dodgers and anauto'd
Wilie Mays card from 1984.

Whew! Linda, that was quite a challenge and quite a lot of fun tracking down
the information on all these unique cards. I imagine one could go quitecrazy
collecting these various non-sport tobacco cards. Maybe someday. At
any rate, those were my first Fitak thanks.

Another package arrived today that contained the last card needed to finishmy
1957 set (Bobby Richardson RC). Back when I joined OBC a little over eight
years ago, my main goal was collecting team sets from my birth year ('66)
on up. Not long after I joined, I received a '57 Campanella from Ken that
came with a note apologizing for the writing on the back (Campy's autograph).
So I thought, why not go for a team set? I remember picking up theDrysdale
RC and the Koufax from Roger Neufeldt at a Tri-Star show in SF I attended
seven years ago with Trips. Got to thinking that not only was a Dodger
team set within the realm of possibility, but that this was a really, really
cool set. I started the set in earnest about five years ago and picked
up a very nice chunk of them over time. Flash forward to the past National
in Anaheim. My number one goal was to finish up the '57. I scoured the
place for four days and eventually whittled the list down to three cards
- #283 Covington, #284 Zimmer and #286 Richardson. Don't get me wrong - those
cards were out there to be found, but not for anywhere near what I thought
was a good price. Anyway, just before the show was about to close onSaturday
night, a bunch of us are standing near the front entrance waitingfor
the rest of the gang to show up so we could head out to the swap session
at Red Robins. I'm chatting with Tim Fitak, lamenting that I haven't been
able to find the last three cards I need for the price I'm willing to pay.
Next thing you know, Tim is gone. Couldn't have been five minutes later,
he walks up with the Zimmer. He'd sniffed one out (I have no idea where-
I thought I'd asked every dealer there) for a price roughly 1/3 of what I
had been able to find it for. He hands it over - two to go! Soon after I
got home, I tracked down a Covington and settled in for the long wait foran
affordable Richardson. The wait is over, the '57 is done!! I'm chasing
down the last few checklist and contest cards, but I'm calling the set good.
This for me is one of the biggest thrills of my collecting life - my favorite
set, and I'm finally done!

So for my second Fitak thanks, hero status is officially awarded to Tim forproviding
the last OBC card of the set. Thanks very much (again) for the Zimmer,
and thanks to OBC for your help as well. I'm stoked!

Whew! is certainly the word because i didn't have a clue to what the
above cards were because they are in German.Either Geordie reads German
or knows an excellent translator.
Those are great translations to English on the name of those German
sets the above cards are in.Now i can identify the set for the cards i
have from each of the 3 sets.I don't have complete sets of those cards
but i know they are from World's Merchant Fleet,Post War period 1918-

I won a complete set recently of the Artistic Dance that Mark Talbot
assisted me in obtaining from a German ebay seller.I knew that set but
not the other 2. The card i sent you was a card from some loose singles
i had picked up at a show after i had gotten the complete set so now i
have dups i can send out.
Also i learned who that guy is on the Post War Period card-He is a
Swedish financier- Odd because that is a German card set.
And the Artistic Dance card i learned what school the dancer is in
thanks to your translation.

I also have some loose cards from a German set "Unsere Reichsmarine"
issued by a Caid cigarette company of Berlin which seem to be pics of
the German Navy.
I also have some German cards of the 1952 Helsinki Olympics

cards produced in Dresden>Odd that Bulgaria cards would be manufactured

There was a card show in Redford today where Ron Perry Earl Kilborne,

OBC fav dealer Mike Sandles' table. Ron was present when i showed up

the only player whose card is different in the 69 & 70 sets). Eek
showed up shortly thereafter and handed me a set killer 97 Pinnacle
Bagwell and a pair of 91 Conlons, putting that set back to the unlucky
13. It was 13 before pulling 2 for Tom Housley yesterday. Mark Talbot
was tardy, but knocks me out with 3 boxing cards. A single T-220 and a
pair of T-218s. I need to verify the size of the T-220 set, but I may
be 1/2 way there.
Mark, Eek and I went out to Eastside Marios for Lupper (lunch/dinner)
of appetizers and cold drinks, while watching Michigan State rally to
beat Illinois and the Chicago nipping the Seahawks in OT.

My friends,
A hearty thank you goes out to Chuck Paris, who kindly invited me over to
his place to watch the Bears game and talk a little cardboard. Since his
wife was out of town, the downstairs basement was deserted save for me and
Chuck (and a few thousand pieces of cardboard fun)! The game was great, the
chips and salsa went great with a bud, and we talked the entire time about
life, family and cardboard dreams. He showed me his T206 work in progress

Two great arrivals last week:

Bama sends me a 55 Bowman of Ernie Johnson. I listened to a lot of Braves games with Ernie behind the mic. Thank you Bama...much appreciated!

Linda Fitak wows me with a package full of cards. Here are just some of the highlights:

T-205 Patrick Moran, 53B Color Sam Dente, 54T Andy Carey, (2) 58T's, and...an autographed card of the "Say Hey Kid" Willie Mays! Wow...my favorite player and a nice looking card from 1980 by a company called Galasso. This card will go on display in a special place. Thank you so much Linda! Linda also sends Sarah another horse card by Player's Cigarettes. Sarah gives many thanks! The package also contained a lot of oddball baseball and non-baseball. Very cool stuff. Again Linda, thanks for the great package!

Thanks OBC!!!

Hello All,
I have been busy as can be and I've fallen behind in everything hobby-wise. Most importantly thanking those who have been so kind. This will take us back to last Wednesday when I had the opportunity to meet with Peter Mead and local friend Mike Rich. Peter called me as I was getting ready to leave my home to meet them at the local Wednesday card show. When I got there I got through the show in about 10 minutes, bought my obligatory item or two from my favorite dealer Harold and we were out of there. It was one of the poorest shows there in some time but then again I don't get there very often.
We were on Mike's side of town so he selected a local Tavern, The Redcoat Tavern and we had a great burger and rings. There were no unusual happenings at the restaurant which in itself was unusual. The usual OBC type conversation and the typical flying of cardboard, before we knew it we were out of there and headed over to KOOCH, the official "King of Oddballs Card House". Now card house is appropriate as there is cardboard or memorabilia in every room of the house, Mike had spent some time cleaning up so we could find the furniture. We watched the Piston game and sifted through cards, there's something for everyone in Mike's dupe box, or should I say dupe's room as stacks, piles, boxes and binders of dupes were all over the dining room table, the floor and all over the room. It was fun!!!
Before I left Peter had slipped me a couple of `72-73 Topps Hockey card (Gilbert & Mahovlich), a `49 Bowman baseball card of Lucky Lohrke, a `50 Callahan of Herb Pennock, a `77 Topps Cloth card of Pete Rose and my first American Tract Society Tracard of Jerry Kindall kneeling. Some very cool stuff!!! Mike had passed my way a typecard of a card passed out at the `76 Midwest Sports Collectors Convention featuring Tiger Cy Perkins and (5) English Tobacco Cards with animals on them for my daughter Kendall. Cool "oddball" items Mike.
Finally, Mike allowed me to paw through his recent acquisition of pre-war issues, before I was done he allowed me to dealer scum (10) items for my collection. I walked home with a `33 Goudey (Schuble), (3) `36 Batter-ups (Hafey, Leslie & Marberry), a `36 Diamond Star (Hendrick), (3) `39 Playballs (Klinger, Johnson & Outlaw) and (2) `40 Playballs (Pressnel & Chapman) thanks to Mike's purchase. A few HOF'er, some HI numbers are all a part of the collection, thanks for the dealer scum opportunity Mike.
All in all - it was a great evening spent with friends of OBC with sports, food, cardboard and camaraderie , a perfect evening. Thanks for hosting us Mike, I look forward to your next visit Peter. BE WELL!!!!

Hello All,

Made it to the Redford show yesterday and met with fellow OBC'ers Mike Rich, Ron Perry and Earl Kilbourn. As soon as I arrive the cardboard began flying which got the show off to a bang.
EEK started me off with a "starter set" of (38) cards for a set that looks just like `57 Topps but they are not. Just like Earl, if he can't hit your list he just starts you down another collecting road. Thanks friend. Ron then reaches into his "bag of tricks" and slides me a SCP - just a `57 Topps Bob Clemente - that's all. What a GREAT HIT RON!!!
The show was good to me with some action to my `71 Topps Super set, my last `62 Green Tint upgrade, a `58 Topps Football Ray Berry card and assorted Hockey and Football hits. I also pulled about 300 cards for the dupe box - so I will have to get busy sending more stuff out.
After the show, Mike, Earl and I spent some time together at a local eatery watching sports and talking OBC style. What a great way to spend an afternoon. Thanks to all 3 of you for a great time - BE WELL!!!

Saturday about 1pm I thought to myself...... hmm, wonder if John Scott Graycan
come over and play baseball cards this weekend?? The wife is gone fora
week and I was planning on digging deep into the baseball card closet soit
was perfect....but it was kind of last minute. Well JSG responded to my
email within minutes and we soon had a plan.

I told my daughters they were going to be on their own Sunday afternoon andI'd
be taking over the downstairs. Their main concern was that I was meeting
someone I'd never met before who I contacted on the internet. They'd always
been told that was a no no. Actually they are old enough to understand
the dif so basically they were just giving old dad some grief.

Well John arrived after a wrong turn (maybe two I'm not sure) but everything
went smoothly from there. John brought over the chips and salsa, a pack of
the 50B Topps reissues for us to each open and a nice stack of 52s and 53s!
I supplied the Bud (capital B, the kind you drink not the bud that youmight
smell walking thru a college campus...get it ?!?!?!). John also letme
swap out a couple of T206s to add to the collection and gave up his only
1970 Milton Bradley Al Kaline.

A great time was had!! Hey anybody seen him play golf? I think he's trying
to sucker me into a big match for some cardboard!

he also had pants & shoes on, he's not that odd.) Again as per usual he
immediately hands me cardboard, this one being an SCP of recently
inducted HOM/HOFer Merv Rettenmund. When I inquired if any other FOOTs
were there he pointed out Ron Perry who was hunkered down with several
25=A2 boxes at OBC friendly Mike Sandles table. I took a seat a few
boxes away and began the process of slowly working my way down to the $3
& $5 boxes. Last to arrive was Mark Talbot who also greeted me with the
official OBC handshake, the cross over cardboard clasp. Twas my favorite
year for cardboard too, vintage 1958. Predictably I spent 99.9% of my
time at Mike Sandles table pulling 58s, 72s and all HOM/HOFers I could
find. My only venture to other tables was a hunt for pre 58 Tigers. I
stumbled upon an OBC style 51B Virgil Trucks for the very modest sum of
$1.00, I think even a veteran like Mark was mildly impressed with this
novice's purchase.
Unfortunately Ron had to call it a day early, so after assisting Mike
Sandles in his packing up process, 3M (Mike, Mark & myself) headed for
East Side Marios for a bit of lupper. Our waitress approached us with
some trepidation as we had every inch of table top covered with
cardboard as we organized Mark's considerable haul from the show. We
were also quite vocal in our support of MSU's comeback win over the
Illini, sorry Geno. Personally I was less enthusiastic about the Bears
win although I must confess I felt compelled to pull for a team from the
black & blue division. In the last few weeks, I've rooted for the
Buckeyes and the Bears, talk about conflicted! Alas, all good things
must come to an end, so I bade farewell to my FOOT friends and headed
back to the House of Maxwell for an evening of bindering cards, playoffs
and 2 hours of my son's all-time favorite show, 24. Gratitude and Thanx

For the fourth delivery in a row, there's an envelope from Mac Wubben with

Subject: Set Killer Chef, Director of Football and a number one banker!!!!

Hello All,

A couple of packages came in today and one was a set killer!!!

A lone SCP from Chef Anthony Arbeeny netted a `77 Topps Glossy Hockey card with a single asterisk to complete that set. Ant-man had shipped this out via the waiver wire and I just got my request in ahead of some other fine collectors and as the reward Anthony will live in infamy on you want list as the provider of the final card in the set.

Tom Housley, Director of Football connects with (2) `73 Parker Brother Football variations for my collection. Ben Hawkins and Del Williams bring me a couple closer to completion of these interesting variations - Thanks Tom!!!!

And for a bit of a record I have received another envelope from Linda Fitak (my #1 banker) without any cards. I have received two envelopes in a row from Linda with nothing buy CASH inside (well actually a check). Now many are quite familiar with the renowned "Fitak Pak" crammed with all sorts of goodies - I believe I hold the record for receiving envelopes w/o any cardboard just "Fitak Cash". Glad to help you out on those PayPal items Linda and thanks for bestowing on me such a record, one I'm certain will not be broken. The CASH will be spent as quickly as possible.

I got to admit - I am weeks behind in getting stuff out and hope to send a few items out this evening - BE WELL and BE PATIENT!!!

a milton bradley card, good stuff from so many sports...she also includes
what I believe is the rookie card of D.B. Platypus...always tons of fun! Thanks

Thanks go out for two OBC
Specials that graced my mailbox Tuesday.
First thanks go to ANDY COOK for a waiver wire hit of a T218 R.E. Frizelle. This is one of the few truly vintage sets that I have had the audacity to pursue, primarily due to the "OBC effect", i.e. 'One's a type card, two's a set'. I love the art on these cards, as well as the fact that they give great insight to the turn-of-the century sporting world. Thanks Andy!
The second envelope comes from RICK JOHNSON, who returns some fire. I had advised Rick not to worry about anything, as my list can be tough. The stubborn guy that he apparently is, Rick digs deep and send two HOFers from my 1970 Topps Football set, bringing that set down to five needs. Hey, I LIKE stubborn. Thanks Rick!

Hi gang,
Now I know I may not be the most efficient person when it comes to giving
out timely thanks, but I think Mac is trying to mess with my head. Normally
I'll keep a small pile of unthanked envelopes on my desk next to the computer,
which I'll remove once I've expressed my gratitude. However, it seems like
every time I get rid of the envelope from Mac, another one shows up to take it's
place. I know I'm not going crazy, because numbers continue to drop off the
1958 Topps list. This time Mac sends four more including an Indians team card.
OK, so now I can take the envelope from my desk and put it in the 'already
thanked' pile... AGAIN. At least it's not the one where I'm getting chased by
snakes and I'm running in slow motion. ;-) THANKS MAC!! TAYL,

So far, I have been averaging more than a package/envelope a day in
the New year. Yesterday I got 2 and today 3 more packages.
OBCer Tom Housely sends along the last 3 1992 (2nd series) Conlons I
need to complete a set already this year.
Peter Mead knows I love Root Beer, so in comes 2 more Hires, I now
hae 15 of the 66. Not quite to Peter or Andy standards, but slowly
adding to them.
Ant sends along a 1977-78 Topps Hockey Glossy variationand 25, yes 25
1938 Churchman boxing cards. That is 1/2 a set. Combined with the 4
I already have, this is now a need list. If I find a T-220
checklist, I can also turn that into a need list, as I 1/2 of those
also. Talking about knocking out some sets.
Ralph Genova who is in 1 of the other trading groups, hits my
fledgling 1974 Deckle Edge set (I had 2 so I was already collecting
them) with 1, a Salada FB coin, a 63 Topps hi # and sends me 2
Tiptonesque 71 Kelloggs.
Bob Swick who I reconnected with through the OBC Bulletin Board (I
had swapped with Bob in the years before I was on-line. Considering
I have been in OBC for 6 years, that had to be a while ago) sent
along 2 of those 62 Salada FB coins, a 34 FB Matchbook, a 89 Score FB
Tim Brown rookie to finish a buddy of mines set, 5 Jenos Pizza FB
cards, 2 of the last 4 1953 Bowman FB (I had gotten one last Sunday
to get to 4), a 1951-2 Parhurst hockey and 2 of the last dozen 1952-
53 Parkhurst hockey.
Couple of excellent days. Add to that I think I have a trade brewing
for the 1960 Leaf Bb #125 Anderson that has been the lsat card I have
needed for that set for over 2 years now. A separate trade for a
large starter set of something I only have a type card issue on, will
allow me to add another set to what I am collecting, so the number
will not drop.

Today's mail brings another trio in from DC including Jim Gilliam, Jim Piersall

The note from Chuck Paris says, "How's that for a smile?" referring to the
1958 Frank Robinson AS card on top of the five '58's he sent me. Of course,
Frank's smile is nothing compared to the one I have - the other four cards
were Nellie Fox, Gil Hodges, Bob Lemon and a clean unmarked checklist on the
back of the AS managers card (with Stengel). THANKS CHUCK!!
An interesting note from the eight cards slipped into the binder - all the
backgrounds were yellow except for the two AS cards. I also got a couple eBay
packages in, which (somewhat surprisingly) yielded a few hits to my variation
lists as well... a couple copyrightless 1950 Bowmans, a few Red Man
expiration date varieties and a rare hit to the 1971 Kellogg's list (Banks - no 1970).
A nice day at the mailbox for sure. TAYL,

Thanks go out to the following great traders for taking the time to hit my

Thunder Dan Austin hits my football Jones with a group of vintage hits that
include two 70 Kellogg's hits (I believe they are the first I have had since
I added that list in CA), a 73 SCP (getting close on that one) and a
seven-pack from 75! Great mix Dan -- thanks!

Bob Neill wows me with a SCP (or is it a DCP) from the 55 Double Header set!
Not only is this a rare hit from a great set, the card features Spook
Jacobs and, well, it also features ME – Johnny Gray! I never looked as
good….. Thanks for the great card Bob!

Bob D'Angelo puts a smile on my wife's face by sending a uv mini of her
favorite player (I would tell you that the player is Ivan Rodriguez, but
perhaps I should resist that temptation and not tell you – hence the
parenthesis – maybe I’m telling you its Ivan and maybe I’m not). The uv
card in question looks just like the 49 Bowmans, but its not. She was
thrilled until she read the back, which proclaimed that her favorite player
was the catcher of the nineties (that would be 1990s, for those playing the
home game) -- she thinks he's still the man today! Regardless, thanks for
helping us out Bob!

Lastly, Kevin Martens fills me with joy as he sends two 61-62 Parkhurst
hockey cards -- I have a ton of vintage hockey needs but they rarely get hit
-- thanks for doing some damage Kevin!

Be happy,

John Scott Gray

Great DCP in over the weekend from Bob Donaldson, a 52T Bill Kennedy & 55B Curt Simmons. Got some ice/snow this week in Vermont, and some biting cold. Looks like old man winter finally arrived. I'm hooked on hockey again too, now that I can watch the Bruins games on NESN (at least till spring training :) Up until this year I probably hadn't seen an NHL game on TV since Bobby Orr was skating ;) Thanks for the cards Bob!

Hi gang,
A trio of envelopes arrived along with an eBay win to ease my grief over
yesterday's loss by the Pats. The first envelope come from Brock Hattox, who
sends five hits to my 1956 set. These cards were VERY nice looking - so nice in
fact, that after I upgraded the ones in my FIRST set, the ones I upgraded
still look ridiculously out of place in my second effort. I should've checked them
to see if I could still smell the gum on them. THANKS BROCK!!
The other two envelopes are from the same person - Mac Wubben, who makes
up for not sending me an envelope EVERY day last week, by starting this one off
with two. I'm thinking there was some mixup at the post office last week,
which Mac will be speaking to them about soon One envelope was very much like
the last ...I lost track... six? seven? that Mac has sent me, with four hits
to the 1958 list. The second envelope was slightly different - it was a longer
envelope with hand written addresses - either Mac ran out of small envelopes
and printed labels or the package was inspected and re-gifted by the post
office. However, it did have a baseball legend stamp and it also had four more
hits to the 1958 set, so I'm thinking it's legit. THANKS MAC (x 2)!! TAYL,

Ken M

envelope arrived from Linda. Not only did she send along the Mays
autographed card, but she also included hits to my 57, 58, 62, and 63
sets. Of course, that was not the end of it. Some interesting
Dodger and Oriole team issue cards, a few uv Jordan and Shaqs, and of
course, some non-sport tobacco. Included inteh dozen tobacco hits
were two Wills's Cigarettes Railway Engine cards. My dad spent his
working life with three different railroad company's. These cards
have sparked some nice discussions with my father and I. Linda,
thanks again for the Mays and all the cards you sent with. I really
do appreciate the package.

I also received a package from JOEL GYSELINEK. Joel has applied to
OBC and is awaiting membership. This was not a trade package, he
just sent some cards. SOunds like he would fit right in.

Aaron Shirley sent four Post cards from 1960. All four cards are quite
familiar to me as they were in my collection that I foolishly sold
around 1971. That means that I, as a six-year old, cut duplicates of
these cards off of Sugar Crisp or Alpha bits cereal boxes. Aaron was a
little concerned about the condition of these cards but they are bound
to be in better shape than my originals, cut out by a six-year old and
packed around for eleven years, wrapped in a rubber band to various
flipping battles, then stashed in a shoe box at night. Naw...condition's
fine Aaron. I'm very happy to bring back Camilio Pasqual, Bobby Shantz,
Jerry Lynch and Bob Wilson into the collection where I promise better
treatment to them this time. Thanks Aaron!

year old somewhere back in time. I can remember when I started
collecting, I participated in some of this type of destruction myself.
In 78, I would cut the rookie and leader cards, giving each player
pictured their own individual card. It was easier for me to put them
with their teams that way. FOr some reason, I did not do this in any
future years. However, in 1980, I liked how each player autographed
his card. So, I decided to cut out some of the autographs and place

Hi gang,
Two packages have come in since my last broadcast. Actually, there's three
I want to acknowledge, but OBC'ers have preference on this server. The first
envelope is an SCP from Aaron Shirley, who seems to be clogging up this server
with thank you notes lately - not from Aaron, but from everyone else getting
his packages. Aaron addressed the letter to "MR." Ken Morganti, which is
usually a title I only get when the letter is from a credit card company or my
bank... not something that ends up very pleasant. In this case however, Ed Roebuck
- a high numbered Dodger from the '58 set slides home safely into my binder.
THANKS AARON!! (But in the future, you can spare the formalities )
Now if I sent out thanks for each individual package that arrived here,
you all would think I'm spamming you with a "Thanks to Mac" e-mail. But no, I
really have recieved separate packages from Mac, who's spamming ME with 4 hits
to my 1958 set at a time. This letter included Dick Groat and the second Chuck
Stobbs card of the week (the other was the infamous 1961 Post cereal SP). I
wonder if Mac jogs by the mailbox on his way to work in the morning with an
envelope addressed to me? If that's true, look for him in a local marathon soon.
THANKS MAC!!
The last envelope of note is from OBC friendly dealer John Morrison
(oldbbcards), who I won four lots from on eBay recently. However, when his package
arrived, it was 35 out of 36 cards - short one 1969 Joe Morgan. I e-mailed him
and said it was no biggie if he didn't see it kicking around anywhere - and I
had already left positive feedback for him anyway. John had me send him my
address again and the Morgan arrived today. It pays to deal with good guys like
John. TAYL,

accident. On the up side, I feel like I've hit the lottery. Like a kid
in a candy store (Card shop store?) who wants to sample everything there.I
just can't wait to open up all the packages to see what is there.

Thanks WILL be forthcoming, as will return fire, when and where possible.

Thank you for being so patient and understanding,

First, thanks to DON RICE who sends me a waiver 78 topps Willie

The second package comes from JOHN STORMAN. John and I continue our

collection - Jim Rivera and Tommy Byrne. Jim also sends three hits to
my 57 set. Jim Hearn and Ed Bouchen from the Phillies, and a Whitey
Ford card. The Ford is trimmed down to match the size of a 75 mini. I
guess this is the rare 57 mini of Ford. Thank you John!

Subject: The postman really does ring twice!

Hi gang,
Today the doorbell rang at about 10:30. I rushed downstairs, because
usually it means there's a package for me to sign or a large puffy sticking out of
the mailbox. Today it was three eBay packages, one of which was a large box
from Johnny Hustle. I signed for that and rushed back upstairs to open my loot.
As I was sorting out the hundred or so 56's and three hundred 62's I had won,
the doorbell rang again. This time, I proceeded to the door much more
apprehensively, fearing that it was a political candidate, Jehova's Witnesses or some
salesperson wishing to sell me magazines or something. In hindsight, it
probably couldn't have been any of those things, simply because it's below freezing
outside and no one is outside unless they HAVE to be out there. I peered out
the window and saw - nobody on the porch. The postman was already down the
steps and next door when I opened up the door to get my second batch of mail.
There were more cards in it for me too!
A package from Bob Corvello was among the second pile. Despite the
addition of over 100 more 56's to my collection (half of which were upgrades), the
Laurin Pepper card was still a hit to the list. It's also one of the nicest
cards in the set to go along with the others I got from Brock last week. Along for
the ride was a '62 semi-high Yankee that was a fine addition to that set. I
didn't want to say anything, because Bob's been in OBC longer than I have...
but I think he forgot about the part of the FAQ that says VG or worse is the
norm here. I'll have to ding these up a bit more for that. THANKS FRIAR!!
The Mac Wubben '58 parade continued to roll into Everett on Wed and Thurs.
The first package contained four low numbers including a never talked about B
lack letter variation. Instead of the white or yellow team name, Chico
Carrasquel's team name has been blacked out and the new one (A's) drawn in with a
magic marker. Mac's final delivery of the week only had three cards. I'm thinking
it might be the end of the ride, but I'll wait until Monday to see. In what
would be a fitting way to end the streak of mail from DC, Mac sends a Lew
Burdette, a Giants team card, and sandwiched between those two - Rival Fence
Busters with Mays and Snider! THANKS MAC!! TAYL,

Ken M
PS - with the recent eBay arrivals, the lists for a couple of my #2 Topps
sets I posted just a couple days ago are somewhat obsolete already. The up to the
minute lists are always available for viewing at

No, the title doesn't mean to imply that TOM HOUSLEY is cheap. To the

its way into my collection.

Today, Tom sends out five "small" hits to reduce my 1975 Topps Mini
wantlist. With a wantlist at 81 cards like my 75 minis...there aren't
a bunch of "small" hits left. Tom sends Don Money, Tim Fitak's main
man J.R. Richard, Yankee/first DH Ron Blomberg, Steve Rogers (who I
remember watching on TV) and Don Hahn (who I never saw play at all).

And just like that...the list gets smaller...and a set that I once
decided never to start because I'd probably be hard pressed to finish
it...is nearing the end.

Great to fill those holes in the binder. Thanks Tom!

This brings up a very interesting question i know one of the members
here who knows about old movies can help me with.
I also heard some friends who are Dodger fans refer to Tommy John
as "the man with the golden arm"
Then i heard a wife of one of these guys who heard that say, " i don't
see how this guy can be much of a pitcher if he shoots up heroin all
the time."
The guys looked puzzled at the comment and she said ,"haven't you ever
seen that movie The Man With The Golden Arm? It is about a heroin
addict so if you refer to this baseball player as the 'man with the
golden arm' i assumed he was a heroin addict."
The guys looked shocked at what she said and replied " no, this pitcher
is not a drug addict. We referred to him as 'man with the golden arm'
because of surgery on his elbow extended his career for many years and
made him pitch better."

Ok now my question-i told her i know that movie and Sammy Davis Jr. was
the guy with the golden arm.
She said i was wrong and Sammy Davis Jr. wasn't in the film.
Does any member know if he was or wasn't. Please help.

Subject: Alcoa, no... Reeses presents "Fantastic Finishes"

Hi gang,
I got two packages in today. One was payback for a set I finished and the
other was the finishing touches on a great run of mail. The first package was
a puffy from Paige Kimball. I finished off her 1959 Topps set by winning the
final beat up card on eBay and having the seller send it directly to her. I
probably would've gotten away with my little bit of craftiness if I hadn't asked
Fuge whether it was safe to leave positive feedback yet. Paige sent me an
e-mail thanking me for the card, which is all I really wanted. However, she also
said Daddy was sending the money for the card whether I wanted it or not (I
didn't) - plus they were throwing in more cards on top of that. Those items
arrived today. Included in the package was an Abraham Lincoln #5... oh wait, that's
not a card... ahhh, seven hits to the 1958 list and a lone '56 that is
definitely well loved. THANKS PAIGE (and FUGE)!!
The other package is the reason the postman rang my doorbell for probably
the tenth delivery day in a row. Most of the other times were for some eBay
win, but another common theme to his visit was a letter from Mac Wubben. This
was the official end to the run that's lasted over two weeks. In that time, Mac
has probably spent enough on postage to buy a round trip bus ticket here to
hand deliver the cards, but who wants to visit snowy Boston in ten degree
weather? Anyway, the postman was already in the truck starting the engine to race
out of there, when he spied me at the door and pointed to the package at my
feet when I didn't notice it right away. I saw the return address of Mac Wubben
and wondered what he could possibly be sending to warrant this big baglike
package? It felt weird too, like he put a whole bunch of Bazooka gum in this one,
so I could enjoy opening up packs with it. It was way better than gum though.
I took a peek in and saw: CANDY! Wow, a whole bag of free candy! What could be
better than that? Not much, but one thing better than free candy is - free
candy with baseball cards! I was already in heaven, thinking nothing could top
this... but wait, there is at least one thing better than free candy and
baseball cards - that's when one of those cards is a Roger Maris rookie card!
Sandwiched in between the Dodgers and Phillies team cards was Mr. Asterisk himself,
with the team blacked out in magic marker like so many of the others that Mac
sent me. But I still get to take a magic marker and put a big black line
through #47 on the old wantlist too (well, figuratively, since it's an electronic
list for the most part). The team checklist cards were already marked too, so
you won't be able to notice the chocolate stains I left on them while putting
them in the binder as much. BIG THANKS MAC!! TAYL,

Ken M

Thanks out to honorable league championship losers BRIAN BETZA, EEK KILBORN,
and almost neighbor CHUCK PARIS for wager payments.
To answer Chuck's question on why did I bet against the Pats, even though I
am a lions fan I was rooting for the Pats. Its just that my track record on
betting should have insured victory for the Pats the second I bet against them.

Thanks go out this week to Jim Beauchemin for a nice Yankee Phil Rizzuto exhibit card.
Good stuff Jim!

Bob Corvello claims he's catching up, no such thing in OBC Bob, no such thing as pay back or a debt.
Four 55's including Gene Conley, four 1960's with a Chico Cardenas rookie, four 1969 with 2 WS cards, and a lone but not lonely 61...Much appreciated guys.

Lost a very young active Uncle in a freaky ski accident, the card board helps.

From: "Chris Stufflestreet"
Subject: Linda Unloads!

Only one OBC envelope showed up today...a big, thick one with a Mickey
Mantle stamp on it. I didn't even have to look at the return address
to know it was sent by LINDA FITAK. I also knew without opening it up
that there would be some neat stuff inside.

Linda started off by hitting several Topps wantlists from 1959-'72
including Harvey Kuenn and ex-Yankee Bob Turley. She also got a few
of the pesky "back of binder" cards marked off my '68, '71 and '72
lists. She also included a "shiny" card from the Origins of Baseball
set. I now have three of those...eventually, I may go after the set.
There were also some "all-time" Dodgers and Orioles cards and a card
from TCMA's "Play Ball 1947" set.

Where Linda may have outdone herself was in the non-sports stuff she
sent. Six British tobacco cards and five with German writing on the
back. The British ones include a transfer -- looks like they predate
Topps' Tattoos and Rub Downs by a few decades! There was one last
non-sports card that was immediately snapped up by my 8-year old daughter.

Among the German cards was a small one picturing an actress named
Renate Muller. I did a Google search about her and found an
interesting story...seems she was one of the two Berlin-based
actresses of the time (Marlene Dietrich was the other) who was
considered to be exemplary of "Aryan beauty." When Dietrich moved to
Hollywood in the 1930s, Hitler himself persuaded Muller to act in more
films that were pro-Nazi. There was a slight problem, however; her
boyfriend was Jewish and she wasn't willing to leave him. Her story
ends in 1937...she died after falling from a hotel window. There were
reports of Gestapo agents entering the hotel shortly before her death.
It's not known whether they threw her out or if she jumped when
seeing them arrive. I also saw a link to a gallery of German tobacco
cards picturing Muller...and the one Linda sent was among them! It
turned out to be from the Orami series C set of 1931.

Another thing about Muller...she was in the 1933 film "Viktor und
Viktoria." The film was remade in 1982 (in English) with Julie
Andrews as "Victor/Victoria." Linda's envelopes are as much of a
learning experience as they are a collecting joy.

Take care,

Hello All,

I have a number of thank you's to post but have just not been in the mood. This has been quite an up and down month for me as the passing of my bother hits me from time to time and I just don't feel like doing anything. Despite my occasional "funk" you fellas continue to surprise me and lift my spirits so I'm feeling rather good this evening and I decided to unbury myself at my desk. Along with that goes the platitudes to:

Chef Anthony Arbeeny plays set killer and sends a `77 Topps Glossy Hockey card of Darryl Sittler with a single asterisk. Just a little variation I discovered at the Chicago National a few years back and I am pleased to say is now history (Mike Rich is still cursing me over the discovery, he still needs a couple). Yesterday "Ant-man" sends me a "waiver-wire" claim with (7) `66 OPC cards for the old collection. Sam Mele, Jim Fregosi, Vern Law, Ray Oyler, Don Schwall, Gary Wagner & Ruben Amaro are now checked off the list and part of the growing Canadian collection I never thought I would collect a decade ago. Anthony - you are too kind and the OPC's & Hockey I promised you have been sent off and you should be knocking off a few from your list shortly.

From the State of my birth, Steve Archibald comes through with a BIG TIME SCP for the `77-78 Topps Basketball grey back variation set. The Doctor is in the house as Dr. J has now been retired to the binder with all the other "long forgotten" players of the time. Steve also includes a personally autographed card of himself to add to my collectors PTC that I have. What can I say Steve but - you're the man!!!

Brian Betza discovers my recent posting of `54 Bowman variations and cuts my down with a SCP of "The Barber" Sal Maglie who was known for "cutting `em close". It was a total surprise and much appreciated Brian!!!

Joel Freedman seeks out my SE Michigan address to deliver a couple of `75-76 Topps Hockey cards. A very cool Assist Leaders card with Orr, Clarke and P.Mahovlich heads the duo. Joel thanks for thinking of me!!!

Tom Housley who got me going on the `73-74 Parker Brothers Football variations helps me out with a couple from this hard to find set. Eagles Ben Hawkins and Saints Del Williams are now in the binder safely tucked next to their Topps counterparts. Thanks for remembering that I am now on this quest Tom!!!

John Leroux allows me to pick a set killer off the "waiver wire" and sends me a `73 Topps "Blue Bast*rd" Checklist card of the Montreal Expos. I have not even thought about the asterisk variations on this set because they have not been easy. Looking for a few upgrades but John helps me officially put this one in the Completed category - Way to go John!!!!

Lewis Oberlander finds an `03 Topps World Series Headlines card of Riggie Jackson for a set that has not seen action in years. To accompany "Mr. October" - Lewis finds a "Stormin' Normin' Cash" card to add to my "all I can get" collection of my HOM'er Tiger Great Norm Cash - my all-time favorite Tiger player. Lewis you are very kind, thank you!!!

T.J. Valacak who stuffs (10) pieces of cardboard into a three count sleeve and ships them my way. Alnog for the ride was (7) `74-75 Topps Hockey cards(Patrick, Gibbs, Stewart, Laframboise, Minn.Ldrs, Dupree & Flett)), a SCP from `74-75 OBC-WHA (Gaudette), a card featuring Ty Cobb's uniform that will go into my Tiger collection and finally a `71 OPC Baseball card of Matty Alou (a splendid HI numbered card). Nice grouping T.J. - THANKS!!!

Just about everything has fallen to the wayside this month, I have yet to tackle all the January birthdays and February begins tomorrow. I have not sent any returns in a number of weeks and need to get on that. Yet despite my bit of a doldrum you guys still come through with reminders of friendship and camaraderie that only old cardboard can bring. Thanks for being my friends, supporting me and being patient with me - I will be getting back to those of you who have offered trades and the like and simply back in the swing of things shortly. BE WELL!!!

REGARDS --------------------- MARK
