Yesterday I got six cards from DAN ANGLAND from a recent offering he posted. They included individual cards from 1959, 1966 (Felipe Alou), 1967, 1968, 1970 (Tony Conigliaro), and 1974. Six sets take one step closer to finishing. Thanks, DAN. Then today I got two packages. First was from frequent mailer T. J. VALACAK, and he sent me a 1963, 1966, five from 1967, a 1968, and sixteen from 1969 including Bart Shirley and Orlando Cepeda. Oh, and nine unmentionables. Lots of really cool stuff that I totally wasn't expecting. Thanks once again, T. J. But the real kicker was what I got from LINDA FITAK. Of course there were cards from TRON, SUPERMAN, Michael Jackson and others, which are her trademark. And I really like the Tron and Superman; perhaps I will start working on those. But there was also a 1958, six 1959s, a 1961, 1970 Cubs Team, 1971, and a 1975 Mini, a 1979 TCMA card of Boston Brave Roy Hartsfield, and a 1980 Babe Ruth card that I'm not sure what it's from... and some unmentionables that she offered on the UVlist and more UV stuff from my wantlist... okay. That's plenty right there. But the biggest surprise of all was the 1951 Blue Back of Billy Johnson! That's the first of these cards that I have ever even seen! Thanks so much, LINDA! And thanks again, OBC. I'm constantly amazed at the volume of stuff that changes hands here. Since not all of you subscribe to the UV server, I wish to again express the deep gratitude myself and my family continue to feel for your thoughts, prayers and support following the death of my son. Your generosity in responding to the DZK Memorial Fund went well beyond the actual contributions providing a certain distraction from our pain and a measure of joy within the profound sadness. Not only will those contributions help to send needy children to Hockey Camp, it also gives our family additional meaning and purpose. I said all that, to say this. I indicated that I would provide you with updates regarding the children who were sent to camp via the Scholarship fund. We had hoped to send our first child to camp this past summer. In fact I had contacted Red Berenson's U of M Hockey School and reserved a session in late July. Arrangements had been made through the Director of Coaching at Iceland Arena to select a Scholarship recipient. Then came a call from the Hockey School. It seems that the School can only receive money from Scholarship Funds for certain age groups. Several conversations in legal language ensued with the bottom line being that the sessions for the age group in question were earlier in the summer. So, as per requested, we will be in contact with the U of M Hockey School early next spring to arrange to send our first Scholarship recipient off to Ann Arbor. Thank You again and always! I searched the web and found a treasure trove of information, not only on the Lynchburg Mets, but a comprehensive review of minor league baseball in Lynchburg by John Nagy. It's fourteen pages packed of detailed information about minor league baseball and how it has evolved. It's comprehensive, well written and packed fulled of tidbits of details. As usual, baseball cards provided some magic in my house the day when EEK's package arrived. On that day, we were getting ready to go away for the kid's first trip to Yosemite National Park. Wyatt had stayed home from school that day and was throwing-up, What should we do?.... Drag a sick kid away for the weekend? We were leaning towards just staying home. Well, when the mail arrived that afternoon, my older son tossed him EEK's package... all of a sudden he was smiling, feeling better, and up and excited to see all of the Ceys popping out of the package... That convinced us to drag him on the long drive to the park. We had to make three "emergency" pull-overs, and I was beginning to think that it was a mistake to have gone, but the next morning he was fine and we ended up having a blast. A couple days ago, I noticed a Shawn Adkins posting of T205's on the Network 54 boards and asked him to reserve one for my purchase. Shawn replied that he'd send me the card in exchange for just my address. The card is an AP Leifield with a Polar Bear back. The one I had in the binder had some paper loss in the bio - this one also suffers from paper loss, but it's at the bottom with the brand info. Definitely a huge improvement for a tough to find card. THANKS SHAWN!! Also arriving are two cards from Larry Gershbach's waiver wire. When he posted the 49 and 50 Bowman cards, I figured I'd have no shot at getting any hits to my list either because they were all gone by the time I replied or they wouldn't be the particular variation I needed. Well, Larry had two of the cards I was looking for. These really help cheer me up from not being able to win any on eBay... what's up with group lots of commons going for an avg. of $5-6 each in low grade anyway? THANKS GERSH!! The eBay arrivals were not nearly as noteworthy... two lots from Johnny Hustle that crossed off maybe 5 cards from my 63F and 64T FB sets and a single 52 Red Man Stengel that I got for cheap hoping it would be the expiration date variation I was looking for... well, I have a dupe to trade for the June date now I guess. Thanks to GERSH for sending along one of the cards he placed on his waiver wire recently: A 1950 Bowman card of Billy Cox. I didn't even have to look on the back to know it was Billy Cox, either. How did I know? Was it because the 1950 Bowman has the same image of Cox as his 1951 Bowman card? Since I don't have that '51 Cox, I wouldn't be able to say Was it because of his standing as a member of several great Dodgers teams that lost a bunch of series to the Yanks? Considering the last season the Dodgers played in Brooklyn was 15 years before I was born, I can't say his face would trigger that sort of reaction. Was it because Larry sent an email telling me which card # he was sending my way? Well, Gersh did that, but I never looked to see who was on the card. So...how did I know it was Billy Cox without flipping it over? Simple. A previous owner decided that having Cox's name on the back of the card wasn't enough, so he wrote the name "BILLY COX" right across the picture. of hits in the last few months from a lot of you. Thanks, ED for the

KEVIN MARTENS sent some cards for the UV server. Check it out.

ANDY COOK sent me my oldest Brave, a W516-2 Hank Gowdy. In fact, it's
now my oldest card of all, since I sent off the last of my T206 and
T205 cards. Boy, these Boston-era Braves are sweet! Thanks, ANDY!

SPIKE GLIDDEN sent a hefty stack of 1980 Burger King Pitch, Hit and Run
cards - all but 5 of the 33 card set!!! So I went from none to all-but-
five! Look for that wantlist soometime this weekend. He also included
a solo hit to my 1971 Topps set. Thanks SPIKE!

And finally, today I got my first package of cards from SIMS CLASSIC
SPORTS. A buncha Braves from Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta! And some
other stuff, too! More about this on the Ramblings server.

Subject: Recent and belated thanks!!!

Hello All,

About a week ago I emailed Peter Mead and thanked him for an envelope he sent and told him I would be posting group thanks shortly. As it was I was behind in thanking people and I needed to get my public acknowledgments out. Well, you know the old story - "Life gets in the way". Finally, I am sitting at the computer with far too many acknowledgments to make, could be some great late night reading for the insomniacs among us. Here goes:

Former member Ralph Genova sends a nice assortment of cardboard, with a `69 Topps Steelers Stamp Album, a `69 Topps Football 4 in 1, a `51 Bowman card of Leo "The lip" Durocher, (3) `61 Nu-Card Scoops with Banks, Kaline and Mazerowski, a `61 Topps Baseball card of Del Crandell AS, a `66 Topps Rub-off of Ed Kranepool, a `69 Citgo coin of Ron Swoboda, a `69 Pin back of Frank Howard and a `73 Topps candy lid of Chris Speier. You guys know how much I enjoy the "oddball" and unusual sets so Ralph's offering was a lot of fun to go through. Very kind of you Ralph!!!

Larry Gersbach allows me to enjoy his windfall with so many other OBC'er and sends me a `49 Fleer Bill Johnson card and a `50 Bowman Bob Cain. These are welcomed additions to the collection Larry and thanks so much for allowing me to share in the wealth!!!

Peter Mead sends a dozen cards with a couple of `62 Post Canadians (Ditmar & Flood) and (10) Hockey cards with singles from `70-71 (Mahovlich), `71-72 Booklets (Plante), `72-73 (Hadfield), `73-74 (LaPointe), `74-75 (Kelly) and (5) unscratched cards from `80-81. The "never-ending trade" continues just as sure as tomorrow's sunrise, Thanks Peter!!!

Ken Morganti connects with (9) solid hits to my `64 Topps Football set. Ken bought a large lot on eBay (some 60+ cards) and only came up with a few hits. Thanks to this mailing - it looks like I did rather well on Ken's auction win. I got to cross off Cappalletti, Eisenhauer, Paterra, Husmann, Grayson, Hunt, Klotz, Gibson and the Raiders Team. Thanks for taking my list down a few pegs Ken, even if the eBay lot was not as profitable for you.

Ron Perry joined Mike Rich and I at the Redford show today and he picked up a `64 Stand up of Johnny Romano for me. I must say that Ron's appearance was a surprise to me so I was w/o cardboard for him but we did scavenge around a bit together and helped each other find some nifty vintage gems for our collection. Great to see you today Ron and thanks for the SCP!!!!

As previously mentioned I met up with Mike Rich today at the Redford show and Mike had an envelope containing (3) `47 - 66 Exhibits for me. Now part of the collection are Dean Chance, Nellie Fox and Norm Siebern. Mike also includes a Vermont Lake Monsters Sked that I think came from Spike Glidden - so thanks Spike!!! Always great to spend time with you Mike and thanks for the cardboard as well.

Aaron Shirley sends retro UV cards that included names like Mathews, Ruth, Killebrew, Ruffing and Thomson - a dozen in total. Nice of you to think of me Aaron!!!!

Marshall West sends a couple for my `52 Look & See collection with Christopher columbus and Luther Burbank. Marshall is just starting this set and sent me some singles for some dupes I will be sending him. Very kind of you marshall!!!

Finally, Mark Zentkovich finds a SCP and sends it my way, a `70 Milton Bradley card of Tom Seaver. What a great addition to the collection Mark!!!

The novel-like entry is drawing to a close, I must add that I am terribly behind in my Birthday wishes and the September Birthdays that have come and gone will be receiving belated wishes from me shortly. The beginning of a new school year, starting new college coursework and family issues have kept me away from the hobby but I am will be making an effort to get stuff out to though who have been patiently waiting for me. To all - BE WELL!!!!

REGARDS ----------------------- MARK

Subject: The Wantlist Crumbleth...

I need to say a very heartfelt Thank You to CHUCK
PARIS for a box he sent me today. Actually, this was
no RAOK like most OBC packages have been for me...this
was his end of a trade. Several months back, he
mentioned that if I had a few T206s to send him, he'd
be glad to make it worth my while.

So, after several emails and some time, I ended up
sending him all but one of the T206s I owned. He sent
back nearly 100 hits to my wantlist, spanning from
1956 to 1975. But they weren't just hits to the list
-- I really need to explain what they were. So
indulge me for a moment:

Among the Highlights:
-1956 Topps Warren Spahn.
-Five 57 Topps, all from the hard Mid-series.
-1958 Topps Eddie Mathews AS card and Vada Pinson's
-My first '59 All-Star card -- Yankee Bob Turley!
-Four Hi # 1959 Topps.
-1960 Topps of Series hero Mazeroski.
-1961 Topps of Bunning, Mathews, Rogers Hornsby and
two more reminders that the Pirates beat the
Yanks in '60.
-1962 Topps Babe Ruth and Billy Williams. And 2 Hi #s.
-1963 Topps Richie Ashburn and a High #.
-1964 Topps Tony LaRussa RC.
-Bunches of hits to my easy 1963-'65 lists.
-1967 Topps with Morgan, McLain and Wilhelm.
-1968 Topps of Morgan, McLain and Maris.
-1969 Topps of Carew and NOLAN RYAN!
-1970 Topps Reggie Jackson
-Two '71 Topps Hi #s
-1975 Mini Robin Yount!

And those are the "Highlights" of the package! Wow!

I'll be heading over to my bookshelf right now to put
these in their new homes.

Take care,

Subject: This week in thanks

Hi gang,
A pair of packages arrived outside of my eBay winnings. First was a nice
puffy from Mark Zentkovich that I almost earned as my half of a trade. I say
almost because I only sent Mark a grand total of two cards on his list. I also
sent him a Mark McGwire item a couple weeks later. In return, I got nearly
FORTY hits to my list. There were plenty of HOF'ers in the pile too (as well as
non-HOF'ers like Rose), but I can't go into much more detail, since the cards
were all from the aforementioned McGwire's once insanely coveted rookie year.
All found spots in my ::wink, wink:: 'secret' UV 9-set project. THANKS MARK!!
Yesterday saw the arrival of a pair of eBay lots plus one innocent looking
envelope from James Moleta, which also came indirectly from eBay. Unbeknownst
to me, James had outbid me on a group of 1949 bowman cards ...well, he pretty
much sniped them from me - however, I got the better end of that deal, since
it cost him another $35-40 to win the lot and I STILL got four hits to my
tough gray back list including a Bobby Doerr! AWESOME! THANKS JAMES!!
Mr. Moleta's envelope forced me to finally go through my 1949 Bowman
binder and I noticed that I may have accidentally erased a few cards from my
wantlist without actually acqiring the cards. So while I got to cross off four
numbers, I had to add three back on (#'s 1 5 and 10 with any back, any condition)
and I discovered a dupe (#58 gray back if anyone needs it). TAYL,

BIg thanks out to DON RICE who hits my 1962 topps set with 9 big
hits. The 62 set runs a close second to the 63 set in terms of cards
needed, so it is great to get some hits. Thanks Don!

KENT MONTGOMERY hits my 67 with a pair including a Clemente checklist,
and hits my 68 list with a pair also, including a nicely trimmed high
number. These cards were hidden among a number of unmentionables.
Thanks Kent!

Seems that maybe JAMES MOLETA has gotten the bug again. By my count,
this is the third thanks posted to him within just the last few posts.

Okay, James. Thanks for the 1940 Play Ball of Eddie Miller; it's my
first from that set. Nice little hole, that doesn't detract from the
picture. Thanks for the 1951 Bowman of - get this - BLIX Donnelly.
Blix. Both were Boston Braves. Er, excuse me, the Play Ball was a
Boston BEE. Thanks also for three hits to my 1962 set, including
another Brave, of the Milwaukee era. And yeah, my condition
requirements are pretty much "I like cards."

So, Mr. Moleta is getting back in gear. And thanks for the kind note
that was included... It's nice to "meet" you.

Take care,

Thanks to PETER, T.J., LINDA and KENT!!!

PETER MEAD hits me with the first card I've ever seen of the Fleer
Baseball Firsts set (AllStar Game, with Ruth on it) and three
nobodies from the 1974 Topps set: Willie Stargell, Lou Brock, and
Rod Carew! My, my! Thanks, PETER!

T.J. VALACAK has hit my list far more times than I deserve. I
suspect many of you feel the same way about him. Well, he sent me
three Conlon Boston Braves cards and some other UV cards (but all of
vintage-era players) of the Milwaukee Braves including Phil Niekro
and none other than Frank Thomas! Also included was a 1967 Mel
Stottlemyre and a 1969 American '68 League Pitching Leaders. And if
you know your baseball, that's the year that McLain had 31 wins. By
the way, second place was a mere 22 wins. Pretty neat piece of
history. In fact, a pretty nice group of cards. Thanks, T.J.!

Speaking of which, I think I may have been bitten by the non-sport
bug. Methinks LINDA is contagious. Miss FITAK sent a pretty thick
envelope, and I knew what was going to be inside before I even
opened it. Well, not really, you can't be too sure with her
packages. But I found some treasures to get my nonsport list
started, including TRON, Superman, Welcome Back Kotter, Superman,
Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek, Charlie's Angels,
Happy Days, and some other "wierdness." What a treat! And of
course, we wouldn't want to leave out the good ol' baseball! So she
graces me with two hits to my 1958 set, one for my 1959s, and - WOW -
a 1978 Nolan Ryan! That leaves me down to just one card (number 6 -
also Ryan, but his Record Breaker card) to finish this set!
Thanks, LINDA!

And last but not least, I got two boxes... TWO BOXES... of cards
from KENT MONTGOMERY, to start giving out starter sets for kids at
my church. I had been looking at gathering some of the young boys
(and maybe some girls) to see if maybe I can spark a collecting
interest in some of them, and start a kids' collecting group of some
sort. He called me up out of the blue one day, helped me "solidify"
those thoughts and get motivated. He offered quite a bit of stuff
to whet their appetite. I have decided not to open the cards until
I get some of them together... but oh, the excitement! You have my
deepest thanks, KENT.

OBC never ceases to amaze.

James Moleta comes out of hibernation and proposes a little trade - so he sends me a `40 PlayBall of Ken Chase, a `41 Playball of Charlie Keller, a `50 Bowman of Sibby Sisti, and a pair of `53 Bowman B&W's (Masterson & Bridges). Always fun to swap some cardboard, especially when the fellow trader has been inactive for a while - Welcome back James!!!

A "media mail" package from Chris Stufflestreet which is the modern Day "Pony Express" as these puppies took many weeks to make the trip from FLA. At any rate, Chris shared with me (19) 12 count plastic sheets that are suitable to hold the `48 - `50 Bowman cards I would like to place in binders. This is just a start and I am searching for more if any one has them but Chris comes through with my "starter" lot so the project can begin - many thanks Chris!!!

T.J. Valacak connects with my `65 Philly Football set with a Brown's Team card and a Skins Play card. just for kicks and giggles T.J. flips me a couple of Conlan cards featuring Cubs Outfielders Joe Marty and Danny Taylor who played their big league ball in the `30's. Cool stuff T.J. - thanks for connecting with my list!!!

see them play the Pirates. Got there early to see the players. The Pirates

age, hometown, etc., and gave me his autograph. Well, let me tell you, I
became a Chet Lemon fan for the rest of his career (do we sense a HOM story

Hope y'all enjoyed! Have a great week, I'll be on retreat this week but
hoping the Dodgers can pull off the upset and get back into either the

Today's mail brought one more OBC envelope. Brian Betza continues the SCP
theme by adding a 1960 Fleer footballer to the slowly filling album. That list
is getting really short too. THANKS BRIAN!! TAYL,

I would like to give a special thanks to Mike Rich for sending me a
book i have been searching a long time for but have been unable to
locate,Mike sends me The Sport Americana Price Guide to Non Sports
Cards by Christopher Benjamin covering non sports from 1961 to 1991.I
had given up on trying to find this book.Mike also sends some very rare
hi #'s for my sets too which are greatly appreciated because i don't
get these hi #'s too often. He sends 2 1961 topps including hi # 558
Don Ferrarerse,a 63 topps semi hi SP Dale Long, a 64 topps hi # Manny
Jimenez and a hit to the tough hi #'s in the 67 set- a Johnny
Klippstein # 588.These great cards fill the holes in the back of my set
binders where i seldom add any cards- thanks, Linda

Does anyone know if Sport Americana published any non sports guides
after the one mentioned above which covers 1961-1991?Are there any
further editions that cover non sport issues from the 1990's or beyond?

Thanks to BRIAN, KEN, and CHUCK!!!

BRIAN BETZA sends along two waiver wire hits, a 1964 and a 1968.
Thanks again, Brian!

KEN MORGANTI sends along a 1949 Bowman of a Boston Brave, BOB
ELLIOTT. My first '49! And he throws in a crisp Morganti auto!
Thanks, Ken!

Alright. I JUST said a few days ago, "OBC never ceases to amaze
me." But this is ridiculous:

CHUCK PARIS sent my first T206 Boston Nationals card (STARR), my
second 1941 Double Play Braves card (HASSETT/MOORE), another for my
growing stack of 1950 Bowman Braves (ELLIOTT again) and NINETY-EIGHT
more cards from 1960 to 1974!!!!! Lots of good stuff in there.
Rest assured Chuck, there will be a few cards coming back to thank
you. Gee. I feel like I burglarized your dupes box. Thanks, Chuck.

Thanks again, everyone.

Recent arrivals in Connecticut:

Matt Glidden sends me a 1963 Judge Landis Bazooka All Time Great for my
birth year project. It’s a very strange looking card. The foil is a little
worn on the card so Landis looks just like one of those aliens with the bald
head and the huge forehead. I like it! Thanks Spike!

Peter Mead hits one of my favorite sets with a double shot for the 1953
Bowman color set. One of the hits was Bob Cain whose claim to fame was the
pitcher that pitched to Eddie Gaedel. Thanks Peter!

Thanks guys!

Hi all,
Mark Talbot sent me a birthday card with a couple of cards that are about
as old as I am. One was a 1965 Philly footballer, which takes the list down to
just five more. The other was most of a 1967 Topps, that leaves... well, that
set is just barely started. If you average that out, it's like two birth year
hits on my birthday. THANKS MARK!! TAYL,

OBC World,
Seems like there are a lot of Sept. birthdays in our group...and I'm one ofthem.
Mine was last week and I have received two envelopes to help ease the pain of
44 trips around the sun.

Famous B-Card sender M. Talbot mailed some fine footballers from the 72 setand
a 71T FB game card !! You all know how much I like those early 70's football
! THANKS for the well wishes and the cardboard, Mark !!!

Brian Betza landed a pack too...some 67's and 66 baseball hits including Gil
Hodges !!!! Thanks Brian !! While these cards are pretty old, they stillare
not as old as me :(

I can only retrieve my mail occasionally now, as I am in Florence only a few
days per month lately. It's extra special to be remembered when I have not
been able to send OUT cards for awhile. Almost all my cards are in storage
and I can't wait to settle in somewhere and begin to enjoy them all again.

Thanks once again !!

Hi all,
Quick thanks out to Gary Mandell for cards that fill in my 'secret
project' binders. Included were three cards of a young Julio Franco (if there is such
a thing) to finish that page and a couple that polished off the entire binder
of high numbers (although all the cards were issued at once, so it's not the
same as a vintage high number). THANKS GARY!! TAYL,

Linda sends along yet another great pacakge. In addition to the usual
assortment of oddball UV cards, some of these sets I am getting close
to adding, she sends along a few hits to my sets. I do not know which
is stranger, that 1 person could hit the following ists, or that 1
person (me) actually collects them: Conlon's are UV, but on mnay
OBCers lists, a apir fo 1978 Papa Gino's Discs bringing me within 11 of
finishing; a pair of 1977 Pepsi BB Glove Discs, that set is within 28
of completion. The strangest hit of all was a single hit to the 1963
GAD Fun cards. Although this set is mainly cartoons of BB, this one
was about bowling pins. Only 14 more for this 88 card set.
Thanks Linda.
