Thnaks to LINDA FITAK for the fat puffy sitting in my mailbox today. As is the norm, Linda tossed in a bunch of non-sports stuff that covered a bunch of subjects (and no two from the same set): Empire Strikes Back, Battlestar Galactica, Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, Welcome Back Kotter (which may be a set I'll start working on), Charlie's Angels, Tron (a movie I liked as a kid but found disappointing when I saw it again a few months back), and -- of course -- one featuring Mrs. DiMaggio. Linda also tossed in several cards from post-'80 that will likely find their way into Melissa's collection once she returns from school (today is the first day of 3rd grade for her). That may have been enough for some traders...but not Linda. She also includes 17 hits to my wantlists: 7 from '64 including Phil Linz (the card that appears in "The Book") and Birdie Tebbetts, 7 from '65 including Yankee Roland Sheldon, two from '67 and a "cool gray" that goes into the second-to-last page in my 1970 Linda even made the envelope memorable...both Greenberg and Campanella were on the stamps. I've been saving the new Baseball Legends stamps sent to me by OBCers, and Linda's package gives me the final two I still needed! So without knowing it, she's a Set Killer to boot! What follows may be considered too much information so please feel free to skip this short ramble. Some of you met my wife at the Cleveland National--on that beautiful great lakes summer night at Jacobs Field. Well the last couple of years have been tough--with two broken tibias (both with titanium nails). Well it happened again a couple of weeks ago. She fell and broke her left femur which also now sports a titanium nail--which frankly sucks. But her spirits are still good and I got to stay at my favorite place in the world for a couple of extra weeks. I fly back up this weekend to bring her home. So simply put--thanks to all of OBC for cards, friendship, and the memories of baseball. First, from Walker Guthrie comes a trio of golden oldies... well, they're not really oldies, but they ARE golden. (Hint: they should be on another server). I didn't see ANY of these at the show (not that I looked very hard or had money to spend on them after dumping a fortune on the vintage lists), but they're much appreciated. THANKS WALKER!! THANKS Bob Donaldson sends over a 1971 Kellogg's Frank Howard that I thought I needed but it ended up matching the one in my binder. I'm starting to hate that set. Appreciate the try though. THANKS BOB!! Next up is the delivery from Gary Mandell. Gary e-mailed me last week fearing that the envelope would make it here without any hits. Along with the bills and my 401(k) statement today was a little envelope witha Hank Greenberg stamp on it. The return address told me it was from BOB D'ANGELO and since I never know what to expect from him, I opened it up. I saw it was a DCP. I also saw a 1980 Topps Eddie Murray card. Reading his note: "Hope this helps shrink the 1980 list some more" I flipped over the sleeve holding Murray and saw the familiar batting stance of Rickey Henderson from his rookie card. Bob, the package certainly does some damage to the 1980 list...two of the last few HOFers down (only Reggie is left among the regular cards) and 13 cards in all to put the set to bed. I'm going to enjoy putting these guys whose careers took them through New York (both played with the Mets, and Rickey was a Yankee for 4 1/2 seasons) and will see them both in Cooperstown in a few years -- IF Rickey ever decides to retire for good. With the 6 I had, I am getting close to 1/2 way on this set and now need a checklist, if anyone can help with that. Gersh checks in with a few upgrades to my buddy's 62 & 63 Topps list, including a high number 63. Tomorrow there is a local show with one of Gersh and mine fav dealer's Mike Sandles. Last nite, John McLaughlin treated me to a great nite. First dinner at Frick's and then a great nite at Fifth Third Ballpark to see the Toledo Mud Hens, led by Tigers pitching prospect Jordan Tata's 3 hitter, beat the Richmond Braves. We were able to meet up with FOOT member George Moore at the game. John and George already knew each other from a get together 6 years ago, but this was my first meeting with this OBCer. George's seat was just off the fence behind home plate about 6 rows up. Meanwhile John had got us teh 2nd row behind the Mud Hens dugout. Other than a major annoyance due to the post-game fireworks causing streets to be blocked off so we could not get to the car, it was a perfect nite. George commented that a main reason he has not updated his OBC wantlist and added the 1954 Topps set (hint, hint)is that he has forgotten his password. Whomever takes care of this (Wayne?) please help him out so we can get a glimpse of what he needs so we can hit his lists. Tonite, I am supposed to go to the Tigers game, although a bit late. George is also planning on attending the game with his friend and family. Never met the guy and then may see him 2 nites in a row. Tomorrow there are a couple of local card shows and Ron Perry and Earl "Eek" Kilborne are planning on meeting me at. George has family obligations and does not expect to be allowed to attend. Mark Talbot's fav dealer, Harold, will NOT be setting up at the Redford show which is a shame as he just picked up a big collection of vintage hockey in various conditions. He will next set-up at the weekly Wednesday show and then probably next weekend at Gibraltar. We have such a dearth of card shows in our area! At this week's Wednesday show I picked up a few Parkhurst hockey from Harold plus upgraded a pair of OPC hockey checklists. I also realized my hockey wantlist was out of date, plus the recent hits, finally gets me below 200 to go on Parkhurst hockey. I was also told a guy in Phoenix mailed me, among other items, the last 3 1953-54 Parkies I needed about 3 weeks ago, but the envelope never showed up. Considering he sent me another package after that, that was much more valuable, I have come to the conclusion that this package is lost. A couple of the best kind of mail came the last couple of days. Matt Heilenman delivered three Kellogg's cards from three different sets. From the 1972 All Time Greats set, Denton True (Cy) Young, a great pitcher that never won the 'Cy Young Award'. From the 1976 set, Bert 'Be Home' Blyleven, another great pitcher that never won the 'Cy Young Award". Finally, All-Star outfielder from the Detroit Tigers, Ron Leflore, who I remember from the days he played with the Evansville Triplets back in the early 70s. Thanks for the great cards Matt! Mark Talbot has sent me more and it's not even my birthday. First an 06 Tigers Schedule. I have decided that if my Red Sox continue their fall down the slippery slope to waiting until next year and don't make the playoffs, I will support the Tigers' attempt for the gold. Also, Mark sends three Baseball Scoops including Tigers batting champ Harvey Kuenn, a favorite of my first collecting years because the cards I had of him always showed that .300 plus lifetime batting average, of which I was quite impressed. Roy Sievers and the unlucky Mickey Owen were the other two 'Scoops'. Milt Pappas and Ken Boyer also found their way into the envelope in the form of 1965 Embossed cards. this is rather incredible as my list was at '7 needed' last weekend and I picked up 4 of those at a flea market leaving the list at 3. I'm back from a week's vacation, and got a couple packages which had come while we were gone. GARY MANDELL sent: 18 cards from the 2005 Bowman Draft Picks set... and a big stack of 2001 Topps Gallery - a deck of 52, in fact. That was more cards for that set than I already had, so yay for progress! Very nice stuff, thanks so much, Gary. WALKER GUTHRIE sent: 9 "vintage unmentionables." I figure if it's taboo to mention UV cards on the main server, it stands to reason that it's also taboo to mention vintage cards on the UV server, haha. So there will be a separate post over there. But anyway, he also sent... 11 hits to my 2001 Topps set, which leaves me with 18 to go. 12 hits to my 2006 Topps set, plus an insert. The last hit for my 1992 Topps set, plus two cards that needed upgraded. SET KILLER! Speaking of set killing, I also went to a couple of card shops while I was on vacation, and got the final two cards from my 1982 Topps set. I probably won't ever get the Pascual Perez no position error, so that set's essentially done. I also got several more 2006 Topps series two packs, which is really starting to narrow down that set... Hello All, I am a few days behind as I had a ton of email to catch up on, went to the Tiger game on Wednesday, had quite a bit of work at school - you get the picture. At any rate a number of items have come into the SE Michigan quadrant the past few days and I must express my gratitude. Geordie Calvert sends a tough `58 felt emblem redemption card. The set is tough enough, never mind these "filler" cards that most just threw away 38 years ago. Thanks for getting this one into this collectors binder Geordie. Brock Hattox requested T-205's so I pulled some from my collection and Brock makes sure I am compensated with a `36 Goudey card of Tiger Great Mickey Cochrane, (2) `39-46 Exhibit Salutation cards featuring Luke Appling and Johnny Mize (both with the tougher lower left signature), a type card `47-66 BOXING Exhibit card of Ken Overlin and a `56 Topps white back variation card upgrade of Bill "Moose" Skowron. Brock also returned one of the (5) T cards I sent him so even that list gets a little larger. Nice little swap Brock - Thanks a lot!!! Joe Issac surprises me with a Roy Campanella stamped envelope which held inside another `56 Topps Back variation. This one was listed as an August Top 10 card and Joe found a grey back Pedro Ramos card that has eluded me for some time now. Joe the cards numbered 1 - 100 are more plentiful with a white back while cards 101 - 180 were more widely circulated with a white back. you sent me the more difficult variation and I appreciate it!!! Peter Mead continues "the never-ending trade" with a Hank Greenberg franked envelope containing (3) `62 Post Cereal Canadian cards with Ken Hunt, Luis Arroyo and Ruben Amaro. Peter comments that they will need to be upgraded but that makes no difference to me - it's three more for the collection that I did not have before today. Thanks Peter!!! Finally, Mark Zentkovich connects with a `70 Milton Bradley card of Juan Marichal and (5) cards from the `75 Fleer Football Hall of Fame cards (brown borders) with Cliff Battles, Sammy Baugh, Turk Edwards, Wayne Millner and George Marshall. Unusual "odd-ball" items that I just love, thanks for the trade Mark!!! Plenty of cardboard goodies to get me past some of the tougher spots in the week. So thanks to Geordie, Brock, Joe, Peter and Mark for making my return back to civilization so enjoyable - BE WELL!!! Today was the envelope from Mark Zentkovich with 4 1976 Shakeys. I am just past 1/2 way on this west coast HOF set. They remind me of my TCMA quest. Yesterday was Puffy Day in the land of Rich. Peter Mead, in a puffy graced by Mantle and Greenberg stamps, sent along a 1952 Red Man June 1 variation back for my insane quest to get the Red Mans with back variations. I think Ken Morganti and I are the only 2 nut jobs after those. Also included were 2 more 1954 Johnston Cookies, where I now have 8. Peter is urging me to switch those from a HAVE to a WANT list. Need a few more first, if anyone wants to assist Peter in furthering my set. A few weeks ago, I checked the OBC message board and saw an old friend that I did not know was back collecting. Bob Swick, is one of the few who I acknowledge has a better FB collection than I do. Bob is back at it after a bad divorce. On the OBC message board he mentioned he needed 2 more 1948 Leaf FB high number shortprints. These are about as rare as the Leaf BB shortprints. I only had about 6 of the 49 high numbers, but happened to have 1 Bob needed. I sent it to him and received return fire from 1 of my all time fav sets, 1935 National Chicle FB. My goal is to get at least 1 a year from this 36 card set, as Steve and Andy can attest. Well Bob sent me 3, including a high number. High numbers in this set are similar to 1952 high numbers. I am now past the 1/2 way mark with 20 of 36, including 2 of the 12 high numbers. He also included a few 1930s Fb matchbooks and 5 of the last 8 1980 Fleer Fb I need. I would not have hooked up with Bob if not for teh OBC board, so thanks out to whoever maintains it. I also received an Ebay lot of Coke caps from a person, Lou Baker, who Don Rice and I normally swap with. I am in debt to him on the swapping front, and he has taken to listing items on Ebay that I have been winning. Need to win some elsewhere to pay him back. Great couple of days. A 1968 Rod Carew and a card from the 700 section of the 1972 Psycho list. A HOFer from '68 -- leaving only 90 cards to finish that set -- and a tough hi # from my Birthyear set...though Ant was a little worried I may have some issues with their condition, rest assured they still fit into my binder and are welcome. Next is an SCP from CHUCK PARIS. Chuck sends a 1960 Frank "Hondo" Howard from the Rookie Stars subset. This is a little opening fire for an impending trade we're working on. That brings my '60 list down to exactly 250 left...still a ways to go. but nice to reach the milestone. Finally, a surprise from TOM HOUSLEY. While my 1975 Topps Mini set has been nearly all-OBC, I've gotten to the point where I have expected to get small chips off the list from time to time. However, OBC's "Director of Cardboard" has directed 16 minis my way. That's more than 15% of all the cards I needed! Highlights of the stack include Yogi (as Mets skipper), Billy Martin (as Rangers skipper) and Rod Carew (giving me two of his cards today)! With 93 cards to go for the Mini set -- the one I swore I'd never get started -- I'm reaching that rarefied air before reaching the peak of a big mountain. Hello All, Incoming puffy from New York, NY as Tom Massimo send a playing deck (52 cards) of `80-81 Topps Hockey cards. A dozen of the cards were "unscratched" making them even more special. Names that stuck out were Marcal Dionne, Guy Lafleur, Phil Esposito, Charlie Simmer, Gilbert Perreault, Rob Ramage and the Islanders Stanley Cup victory card. Thanks so much Tom, cool icy cards for the collection - WAY COOL!!! REGARDS --------------------- MARK
