Although he apologizes for misplacing his extra Carlton RC, the cards of Kuenn and Katt (that's the way Topps spelled it, not me) make up for it. THANKS BRIAN!! Lastly, Peter Mead adds a nosebleeder for my set and adds in some sharp looking Fleer FB cards and a tipton beauty for my 1964 Philly FB set. THANKS All in all, it was a very good start towards finishing my 1965 set, which at this rate might be done in a few days. It also brightened what is otherwise a very gray and VERY rainy Wednesday. Last week, I had to leave a quick thanks post, and didn't get to the details, but I've received several awesome packages lately. Here First, a big thanks to ERIK GREENWOOD, who sent me fifteen Hostess cards from 1975-79, with several big names, including Hank Aaron, Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson, Willie McCovey, George Foster, and every single Buddy Bell from the five-year run except for the 1979. Those Bells will go toward the ever-growing BELL collection, and all the rest will be tucked safely into my personal 500-HR club collection. Oh, except for the George Foster cards, which are part of a "50-hr-in-a-season" collection. Thanks for some great cards, Next is BOB DONALDSON, who sent me nine - NINE! - 1967 Topps posters, a deckle, and my first three 1969 Topps Stamp albums, including several of the stamps inside. Plus there were four Hostess Braves, including an awesome 1978 Niekro. Thanks a bunch, BOB! LINDA FITAK never ceases to amaze me, as I'm sure most of you understand. First was one of the very few 1952 Topps cards that I have so far, John Pramesa. This card has a lot of character. Next is a very sharp looking 1956 Topps Bob Nieman (which was apparently included as an "apology" because the other cards in the lot were so beat up. Linda, you outdo yourself every time you send me cards; the only apology necessary is from me to you, since I can't adequately send you stuff back to thank you). Then there were Topps cards from 1958, 1960x2 (including Bill Bruton, one of the early African- American Braves), 1962x5, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1968x2 (Mets and Braves team cards), and ten UV cards. Then there was the "Fitak special," eight non-sport cards with everything from Michael Jackson to Lucille Ball. But the absolute highlight of this package was the 1964 Eddie Mathews. It's one of my favorites. Thanks so much, LINDA! MARK ZENTKOVICH sent me a nice package with about 65 cards, including several Dale Murphys, and several 1954 Topps Archives reprints. Yes, it's UV, but it's great stuff. Thanks, MARK! BAMA sent along two trimmed 1953 Bowman Braves from the waiver wire. Thanks so much for adding these treasures to my collection. ED MCADAMS sent a second package of various material for my wantlists, with about 200 cards. A lot of stuff for me, and a lot of Braves stuff for the kids at the church. Thanks, ED. Hope to see you in the group soon. And ED PIKE sent me some weird Babe Ruth cards, and seven 1975 Topps mini Braves. I love these minis, why hadn't I ever seen them in card shops for the last 31 years? Thanks, ED. Okay, that's a lot, but I wanted to get caught up. Subject: 65's roll in!

Hi all,
A couple envelopes hit the old mailbox recently. I also found an envelope
buried under the rubble on my desk that I may not have previously aknowledged,
so I'll risk sending out duplicate thanks. Ed Schott's letter is the most
recent arrival. It had a three pocket sleeve with three hits in each pocket to
cross off nine from my list. A couple of the cards also had teams crossed off
and updated after 1965 by a shrewd collector. Poor Tommy Harper is noted as
having played for the Pilots, Indians and Milwuakee Braves after leaving the Reds.
The updates fortunately stopped before the writer ran out of room on the
front of the card. I was debating whether or not to cross off the final entry and
write in Boston, but I put the card in my bider as is. THANKS ED!!
Like many others out there, I too got an envelope from Linda Fitak.
Inside were the waiver wire claims I made along with her usual assortment of
extras. The highlight was definitely the STEVE CARLTON RC she sent though! A couple
of the corners are actually sharp too... mostly the ones where the Fritz
Ackley half of the card was cut off. Was Ackley that bad that the previous owner
didn't want him ruining his Carlton Rookie card? We may never know. Anyone have
the other half? I'd love to reunite these long lost teammates with some scotch
tape if you do. THANKS LINDA!!
Tom Massimo located a few hits to my secret UV project that ironically
also included a Steve Carlton from a much later point of his career. THANKS TOM!!
Finally, after digging through the mess that is my desk, I ran across an
envelope from Don Rice that had some FB hits to my list... at least they were
hits when he sent them to me about a month ago. A couple of them still
found empty slots in the binder thuogh. (Very belated) THANKS DON!! TAYL,

Ken M

Hello All,

Happy Father's Day to all who are so blessed. I had a great day spent with my family and enjoyed it throughly. Yesterday Wyatt the postman brought many items to be thankful for so let me acknowledge the following VCT traders:

Dan Angland takes aim at my most recent 10 and under posting and delivers a very cool `93 MilkBone card of Mark McGwire and his Siberian Huskies Sam & Ellis. Big Mac was still with Oakland at the time and had not "juiced up" enough to clout the big ones just yet. Nice addition to the collection Dan.

Brian Betza spanks my 10 most wanted list with a `62 Topps baseball card of Jim Schaffer. I am down to a half dozen cards to complete the set, mostly tough star and RC's but I am ever so close thanks to Brian today. COOL!!!!

Finally, Don Rice finds some `62 Post Cereal cards for me and a half dozen `06 Helmars which are soooooooooo cool!!! Hope to find a few color variation among those `62 Postiees - Thanks for your help Don!!!

Great to get all these wonderful additions to my collection - Be on the lookout for pay back as it is on its way. BE WELL!!!

This week brought 3 SCP and a Slam of a package.
Leading off was Peter Mead with my "un"lucky 13th Hires card, which
esseentially puts me at 20% of the set.
Ken Morganti finishes off my 1973 Topps BB Team Checklist variation
quest with a single asterisk Royals. now all I have to do is upgrade
about 30 of the 48 to unmarked status. LOL.
Spike sends me a Cracker Jack card of Gaylord Perry. I have a couple
from the Legends set. This is from legends II which I was unaware
of, so this is a type card.
Chuck Paris sends me not just return fire, but almost burns the house
down: 5 T206s including Wallace, Marquard (pitching follow through) &
Jennings (1 hand version). A MP & Co Foxx, which I think is 1949.
The text is different from my other Foxx, that I think is 1943. The
1949 Foxx is 1 of only 3 in the set that is unnumbered, plus it is
also in the 43 set, so you see the dilemma. This puts the 49 set
down to single digits. A 1935 Goudey Averill reduces that set to the
unlucky 13. A 1941 Double Play rounded out the prewar PART of the
package. He then sent for my buddy Rocky's lists 25 1962 Topps and
39 1963s. WOW, that is what I call a slam! Rocky is down to 34 1962
low #s. The 63s are strange. Although the 5th series is the
toughest, he needs more 4th series than 6th series hi #s. Go
Thanks to each of you for your assistance. Always great to finish a
set, plus get closer on other sets.

Thanks to PETER, JIM, DAN and KENT!

I am TOTALLY behind in my thanks, and even further behind in sending
return fire. I have been out of town for two of the last three
weeks, due to my ministry...

PETER MEAD sends me a 1961 Post, two 62 Topps, an old Fleer Ed
Delahanty, and what is this Mel Ott card? I forgot. Cool looking,
though. Thanks, Peter.

JIM BEAUCHEMIN sends a 62 Roger Maris Exhibit, one of the first
exhibits I've ever had. The only other one I recall owning is on
display, it's from Lynn Miller, and it's (you guessed it) Hank
Aaron. Thanks, Jimbo.

DAN ANGLAND sends 34 cards, ranging from a trimmed 1952 Topps to
unmentionable years. I'm slowly increasing my O-Pee-Chee collection,
and maybe someday it will be enough to warrant a decent wantlist or
three. But anyway, lots of stuff he said he had available... LOTS.
Good cards, thanks, Dan.

Then in today's mail was an unexpected package, from KENT GOTO. 57
cards from 1975-79, including a 79 Fisk, leaving me just 6 cards shy
on the 1979 Topps set. That list is below, in case someone can send
a hit or two. Thanks much, Kent.

1979 Topps 24 Molitor. 25 Carlton. 115 Ryan. 116 OSmith. 413
Maris/Aaron. 665 Brock. Anyone got these?

Thanks again, guys. Thanks, OBC.

Anthony Arbeeny sends a nice 6 pack including scp's from 65,73, and 74. Tosses in three from 75. Thanks Chef!

Looks like I received the Kent Goto assault early in his attack. Kent sends a tremendous puffy. Still trying to figure out how they all fit.

Over 100 beautiful hits from 1975! Many team cards, leader cards, and some great "semi" stars. Griffey, Russell, Baker, Carty, Wynn, Thomas and Cooper.
Kent also adds 38 additional cards from 77 to 79. Fisk and Fingers, and a Sutter rookie and a Lonnie Smith Rookie. This really put a hell of a dent in my 70's run. Outstanding Kent!

Thanks, Dan Angland

Hi all-

It seems as if the past 6-8 weeks have been so busy, I have had no time to
actually sit at night. Between a number of work trips, a long family
vacation, playing on 2 softball teams, and coaching a little league team,
free time is non-existent. But since we are taking time off tonight from
building our ark after the recent non-stop rains, I finally had some time to
sit, watch the Red Sox, catch up on thanks, and put together some return
packages. Thanks today to:

Tom Housely sends a nice 60 Leaf of Al Spangler. Thanks, Tom

Bob Donaldson sends a huge stack of 70s Hostess cards. Thanks a ton, Bob.

Larry Gersbach sends a great 51 Bowman of Allie Clark. Thanks, Gersh.

including an episode when he challenged John McGraw to a fight outside the

from the team. He didn't last long after that, as he ended up being shot to
death by a bartender in Boston. I guess booze was the deadball era's

Hello All,

A trio of fine traders found the time to send or deliver some additions to my collection. I would like to thank T.J. Valacak. Spike Glidden and Mike Rich.

T.J. collects up a trio of `66 Philly FB cards including Joe Morrison, Lion John Gordy and a Steelers/Giants action card. The condition is just fine T.J., my want list just states conditions I'd like to eventually get the card at but everyone here knows I will accept additions to my collection in ANY condition. Thanks T.J.

Spike sends a direct hit to my Topps quest (now at 386) and two variations for the list (now at 620) including the first hit to my newly posted `53 Topps back variation list. A `52 Topps card of Steve Gromek, a `53 Topps variation of Bob Adams and a `56 Topps white back of Frank Torre are now added to the collection with my compliments to Matthew.

Finally, Mike shared tickets to Tuesday evening Tiger game which featured a pitching duel between the Bengal's Nate Robertson and the `stro's Roger Clemens. The point was to go see "The Rocket" for what could be his final Detroit appearance and I'm glad we did. Of course Mike and I don't get together w/o the usual exchange of cardboard and this time was no exception. Mike had my "stack from Toronto" ready and waiting and handed over (39) various OPC baseball cards for my collection. Mike officially closed the book on the `69 OPC Deckle collection with a Bob Gibson upgrade, connected with (2) `65 OPC (Brand & Campaneris), (12) `66 OPC (Swoboda, Reniff, Perez, Zimmerman, Aparicio, M.Alou, F.Alou, Buc Belters, A.Johnson, Staub, Taylor & Pinson), (8) `67 OPC (Singer, Bristol, Brewer, Staub, Fairly, K.Johnson, O'Donoghue & Ramos), (6) `69 OPC (W.Davis, T.Davis, G.Jackson, McDaniel, Face & Roseboro), (6) `71 OPC (Dodgers, Roberts, Santorini, 5th Checklist, O.Brown & Stahl) and (
4) `74 OPC (Batting Ldr, H.R.Ldr, A.S.Left fielders & Jose Cruz). As you can see I had a very good Spring Toronto show thanks to Mike's generosity. The cardboard, the tickets and your company at the game were all appreciated Mike - Thanks!!!

Well, I got another batch of stuff off to the post today to light up some mailboxes across America (and beyond) - be on the lookout. BE WELL!!!

them in their reserved spaces in the sets! Thanks Kent!

BOB DONALDSON - hits me with THREE Birth Year cards - in the form of 53

that Willie made famous with his catch..) in really amazing condition and
also two well loved Cubbies (by me that is...) of Phil Caveretta and Bob

Thanks so much Bob for the great package!!

Hey Joe - 'those is fightin' words buddy!!!!

Just because your Cleveland team and GM Frank Lane gave up on old Stormin' Normin before logging a single at bat with the tribe is no reason to blast away at one of our local (and one of my personal) heroes. Cash amassed 377 round trippers (second only to Kaline), 41 triples and 241 doubles on route to a respectable .271 batting average and if the man could bunt as well then more power to him (some of today's diamond heroes can't even lay one down).
As for the corked bat issue, Cash did admit to this practice but would we really want to chastise Norm in light of today's current steriod controversy. It's more likely that the inflated stats for the entire league (remember Maris hit 61 Homers that year) can be a reflection of the expansion of baseball that year and the impact that may have had on the pitching throughout the league. Let's face it, the pitchers of the day were trying to get an edge by cutting the ball, greasing it up and later in the decade they raised the pitcher's mound on them - hitters had a "right" to find their own edge. Was Norm's 1961 year out of the ordinary - well sure, his .361 BA was never again even close in the sights (or any one else in the 60's - check it out) but he did sustain a 17 year career in the Big Leagues and could never been considered a slouch with the stick. Cash twice won the Sporting News "Comeback Player of the Year" Award in 1965 and 1971 showing that at least the sports wri
ters of America were aware of Norm's abilities, something you might have been aware of Joe. Norm Cash was a member of (4) All Star Squads, was in the Top 10 for HR's (9) different seasons and I don't even want to get into the defensive records that Norm Cash holds.
Now if you wish to bash on Steve Demeter who Frank Lane traded for then I will be first in line to comment but Norm Cash could hit the ball, bunt the ball catch the ball etc.... and he did it for 17 glorious seasons of my youth. Norm will not make the HOF but he was a fan favorite and one of my personal ALL TIME Tiger heroes. I see that I have been drug into the brewing Norm Cash debate. Let us
not forget that while Cash was certainly a worthy player, he was only
the third best slugger that the much-despised Frank Lane dispatched
from the Wahoos within a very short time - sending off Roger Maris to
KC for a bag of sweatsox, and Rocky Colavito to the aforementioned
Tigers for Harvey Kuenn (who, while a estimable batsman in his own
right, somehow aged 15 years on the plane ride down from the Motor
City). Even at the age of 8, it was clear to me that the Tribe's front
office was not composed of mental giants.

Okay Joe,

I remember meeting you a few years back at the Cleveland National Swap meet and know you to be of fine character and knew that this had to be a brief lapse of judgment. Apology accepted!!!!

Back to Norm Cash, yes Joe he was quite a character. Apart from his batting accomplishments, Cash was a favorite with his teammates, the media, and Tiger fans. He was known for his sense of humor; in one famous episode, while he was a base runner, he attempted to call time out when he was about to be tagged out. Cash was also noted for never wearing a helmet during his entire playing career, being one of the few players who were permitted to do so after they were mandated in 1971. Also, in another famous incident long remembered by Tiger fans, on July 15, 1973 during a game at Tiger Stadium where California's Nolan Ryan was dominating on his way to his second career no-hit performance, as a joke Cash brought a table leg to the plate instead of a bat with two outs in the 9th inning (he had struck out 3 times already that night). The umpire would not allow Cash to continue his stunt and marched him back to the dugout for more appropriate hardware but the stunt lives in the min
ds of Tiger fans everywhere.

As pointed out by others Cash is my HOM’er and I continue to add to my tribute collection of the man, any and all Norm Cash memorabilia and yes even other stories will be gratefully collected and treasured here in Southeastern Michigan. I wish all a pleasant Independence Day holiday – BE WELL!!!!

Subject: Cashin' In

Even when a game might still be on the line, Stormin' Norman never lost hissense
of humor. 154 games back then, now 162, day in and day out, can addup
to a pretty long season. I think some of that humor we used to see from
guys like Cash is a part of the game that we've now lost a bit, and why going
to the games seemed so much more fun back then.

I used to love the way Cash would do those things like carrying that table leg
up to the plate to get a laugh from the crowd and the other players. It
makes me think Cash would have fit in well the Frank Sinatra, Dean Martinand
Sammy Jr. Ratpack crowd, all standing around a piano with drinks, cigarettes
or cigars in their hands, crackin' jokes and gettin' laughs.

Oh, I suppose if you're now getting paid multi-millions and millions of dollars
to play a little boyz game and hit a ball, you better the hey* get up there
and hit the dang* thing and not prank around about it, but I miss that
fun from those daze.

Whenever we'd go to the games back then, I always asked my Dad to try to get
our seats down the first base line so we could watch the antics of good ol'
Stormin' Norman. I used to love the way he would try to mock someone from
an opposing team who had long hair. Before the player with the long hair
got up to the plate, Cash would sneak a bunch a grass up under the back of
his cap while down at first base, and then when the guy got up to bat, hewould
do a little extra moving, walking and turning around so everyone would
notice the grass, looking like long hair hanging down from his cap and getting
that laugh from the crowd.

I'll be going to Coors Field next Sunday to share some fun with my friends, and
while I fully expect to have a great time, I know I'll never see anything
like that. ...not unless I do it myself or something...

Ah yes, bring back the Norm Cash's of the game any day!!!

Hey Joe - 'those is fightin' words buddy!!!!

Just because your Cleveland team and GM Frank Lane gave up on old Stormin'
Normin before logging a single at bat with the tribe is no reason to
blast away at one of our local (and one of my personal) heroes. Cash amassed
377 round trippers (second only to Kaline), 41 triples and 241 doubles
on route to a respectable .271 batting average and if the man could bunt as
well then more power to him (some of today's diamond heroes can't even lay
one down).
As for the corked bat issue, Cash did admit to this practice but would
we really want to chastise Norm in light of today's current steriod controversy.
It's more likely that the inflated stats for the entire league (remember
Maris hit 61 Homers that year) can be a reflection of the expansion
of baseball that year and the impact that may have had on the pitching throughout
the league. Let's face it, the pitchers of the day were trying to
get an edge by cutting the ball, greasing it up and later in the decade they
raised the pitcher's mound on them - hitters had a "right" to find their
own edge. Was Norm's 1961 year out of the ordinary - well sure, his .361BA
was never again even close in the sights (or any one else in the 60's -check
it out) but he did sustain a 17 year career in the Big Leagues and could
never been considered a slouch with the stick. Cash twice won the Sporting
News "Comeback Player of th! e Year" Award in 1965 and 1971 showing that
at least the sports writers of America were aware of Norm's abilities, something
you might have been aware of Joe. Norm Cash was a member of (4) All
Star Squads, was in the Top 10 for HR's (9) different seasons and I don't
even want to get into the defensive records that Norm Cash holds.
Now if you wish to bash on Steve Demeter who Frank Lane traded forthen
I will be first in line to comment but Norm Cash could hit the ball, bunt
the ball catch the ball etc.... and he did it for 17 glorious seasonsof
my youth. Norm will not make the HOF but he was a fan favorite and oneof

Stormin' Norm Cash from 1964. It's surprising how Norm had a bunt poseon
this card since his never duplicated his '61 performance and the bunt was
probably the only way he could get on base - I believe I read somewhere that
he admitted to using a corked bat that year. Thanks very much Kent.

I usually wait until Saturday or Sunday to send out my thanks but there's
been so many inbounds I just had to get these thanks sent out a little early.

So, with no further ado lets begin with the Kent Goto World Tour. Kent sent
a very large stack of 1975 Topps. 116 cards and they are all in better
condition then the majority of the cards that I already had. Thanks Kent.

Everyone else sent 1972 Topps. These cards have been coming in faster then
I can take them off my want list.

Eight from Ed Schoot. This is the second batch Ed has sent, thanks Ed.

Earl Kilbourn sent 47, thanks Eek.

Ray Luurs sent 80 with a '68 Brooks Robinson AS card that he tried to slip
in on me, thanks Ray.

Six more from Bill Malson, thanks Bill.

Dan Angland sent five, thanks Dan.

John Harrell sent 18, thanks Bama.

These cards dropped this set down to needing 369. much better then the 598
that I needed a couple of weeks ago. Of course I will have some dupes to
redistribute, I think everyone sent a Cesar Cedeno card.

OBC, it's an attitude
