Bob D'Angelo for a tough DY hit of Joe Collins to the 57 quest, bringing me within 16 cards. Bob Donaldson for a huge bite out of the 51 Red Back set with FOURTEEN hits including Rizzuto, Spahn, Feller, Kiner and Hodges. That leaves only 9 cards left including the 4 variation cards. My show report and Thanks are both a little late, but both were wonderful treats just the same. Last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting up with more groupies at the Sun Times Show. Ron Perry split the cost of the room with me on Friday night and I thoroughly enjoyed his company. Saturday at noon, I caught up with George Vrechek, Gary Mandell, TJ Valacak, Mike Wierzbicki, Ron Perry and fellow variation collector Larry Leonard. It was my first chance to meet Gary, George and TJ so they have been forever enshrined on my website on my "encouters" page. Lots of fun talking and showing off cards during the lunch hour then everyone headed back to the show floor to find the bargins. For me, bargins were not really around much but I really only made the trip to take a little break from things and meet up with the guys. I did manage to pick up a couple of 50's variations that have eluded me for quite some time. Unfortunately I didn't find the one card I was hoping to find but hey, you can't eat cake and be skinny too....or something like that. All in all it was a great show, great company and a great time. Even the drive was good going up and back, only had about 30 miles of mild traffic each way. Oh yeah, on the way to the show I noticed that there is an Atlanta, IL so of course I had to stop there to refuel. Nice quaint little town and I asked how many people lived there. The lady told me that they were a "super small town with less than 1500 people". To which I replied that I lived in Atlanta, MO with 450 people and we have only one four way stop in our town. They had at least 3 gas stations, a grocery store, hardware store and who knows what else that I didn't see. That sounds like a city to me, we're lucky to have our Post Office and the unmanned automated gas pumps which you have to sign up for monthly billing by use of a special swipe card. Now that's a small town! A huge thanks goes out to Erik Greenwood for a spectacular SCP that arrived this past weekend: a '65 Topps Bob Gibson!! Holy cow!!! It was especially timely because just about a week ago my son had been looking through my '68 set and I was telling him stories about different players and I told him about an interview I'd heard with Tim McCarver. Tim told about the time that Pete Rose challenged Gibson. Gibson had brushed him back a little with the first pitch and Rose had wheeled away and dropped to the dirt. Indignant, Rose got up, looked out at Gibson, and spit towards him. The next pitch was (predictably!) a fastball hurled precisely toward Rose's head! Rose again dropped, but this time as he was coming up McCarver said he looked as white as if he'd been dipped in a flour sack. According to McCarver, Rose *never* challenged Gibson again. Gibson now lives just across the river from Omaha, in Council Bluffs, IA. He is reknowned to still be a somewhat difficult personality to talk with/get an autograph from, but I understand that if you get him talking about his classic car collection he might be a bit more friendly! He did have a celebrity charity golf tournament in Omaha up until last year. Unfortunately it almost always happened right at the time of summer when I was most broke and I never did get out to it. :-( At any rate, before I get mistaken for Morganti I probably had better quit! A very close friend passed away on Good Friday, that was a very emotional experience to say the least. Life goes on though, and helping to bring me out of my funk comes a puffy from Linda Fitak. This was the best medicine that I could have. Linda sent a very interesting assortment of cards including 7 hits to the '72 Topps set, a '61 Fleer Baseball Greats Schoolboy Rowe, pictured as a Phillie, a Detroit News Norm Cash card, one of those autographed Pete Rose cards that's been making the rounds, a '79 TCMA card of Detroit Tiger Johnny Groth, a UV Tombstone Pizza card of Cecil Fielder, an unopened pack of five cards from a set I'm not familiar with which claims "World's Greatest CARD CHASE" in which there may be a T206 Wagner card or some such. Ok, lets have a looky-see... no T206's, in fact all five cards are nice clean mint condition UV cards. There is a Kirby Puckett card from the '88 Donruss set. I'd go into more detail but this is getting a little long. That brings us to the main part of this package, three additions to my Kaline binder. Normally I don't pay much attention to insert cards, with the exception being cards for Kaline, Cash or Fidrych. I could go on and on about these cards, but let me cut this off with a big thanks to Linda for some much needed diversion from the real world. Love to see my second favorite team beat the Yanks. (Second favorite team being, any team playing the Yankees, of course). The third card features HOFer, Mel Ott, who walked 5 times in one game for the fourth time. I doubt he whined about it as much as Steroid Boy Bonds whines about his walks. All these cards make me quite happy. Mark also sent a 06 Tigers Sked so if I happen to be near Comerica Park this year, I can whip out my schedule and see if I can get in a game that day. I may be a little late, but I want to thank the following gentlemen for some great cards waiting for me on our return. Geno Wagner sent a great '75 OPC Thurman Munson along with a beautiful unmentionable card from the modern era showing a baseball stadium. Peter Mead's contribution included two '60 Posties - the Bucco's Don Hoak and the Dodger's Duke Snider!!!!!!! Father Pat reports sending along a couple of cards to an older address, although they never were forwarded to me (or returned to him, for that matter). With any luck, perhaps the person at my previous address has started their own OBC-style collection? The card back reports that Gerald Walker batted .280 in 1933. That was a low figure for Walker's career, which went as high as .353! His 15-year career totals were .294 and 1991 hits. He played in a high-average era (league average across those 15 years was .281), but stayed above-average offensively until the last couple of years. Thanks Fr. Pat! Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Gersh & I ran into each other at a card show in Cincy this past weekend, & he let me know that OBC-friendly dealer Wayne Johnson was just a few feet away. So, I stopped by Wayne's & picked up some cheap (and nice) 1953 Topps for just over a buck apiece. He had just purchased the partial 53 set & was offering the cards for 10% of Buckett, so I jumped on some commons. Then he points out that there's a Jackie Robinson in there & offered it to me for 80 bucks. Chicken that I am, I didn't want to drop the cash for it, thinking the wife might get a tad upset. S, I drive an hour home, tell wifey about my finds - and she says "how often are you going to find a Jackie Robinson for that price?!" Ding ding ding, little bells go off in my head - I just received permission to spend the money! Drove back down there the next day, figuring Jackie would be gone - but it was still there & I got him for the 80 bucks. A very nice card - just minor edge wear, no creases or writing at all. Wow! Well, considering that I've been pulling my hair out over his lists for over a year now, and finding nothing, I'd still consider this measly hit, 'Piling On'. The card Don sent is a 61 Nucard Baseball Scoop of Gene Autry looking regal in his 10 gallon hat. Something notable about this card is that when I enter it into my database, I will have to put MT in the grade column. All of you know that mint cards from the 60's are a freak of nature, so I keep looking at this one because I know there must be something wrong with it. I've considered stepping on it, but abusing cards does not exactly put the card into the 'well loved' category by definition. So, Don, thank you for this "measly hit". Another envelope came today. A fat one from new OBC guy, Russell McBride. It had 13, 20-23 year old cards, Yount, Sutton, Gwynn, etc. Those last remaining 80s lists are getting tiny now. Bob Donaldson-I had the pleasure of meeting up with Bob for breakfast (his office was just a few minutes from my hotel) and then after I returned homea puffy from Bob with a way cool Yaz postcard, a 61-2 Fleer Christy Mathewson and a 62 Post Don Elston. Dan Angland-who sent a trio of 62 Post, including OBC legend Don Hoak! Thanks Dan, Bob and Ken! I never met an OBCer I didn't like.... ================= To: Originaleek@webtv.net, Date: Mon, 01 May 2006 04:00:11 +0000 From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: NCAA Tournament Victory Spoils continue to come in!!!
