Thanks to ROB, LYNN, RICHARD, RAY, SEAN, ERIK, and BRIAN!!! A few thoughts have been circulating in my mostly empty head as I tried to figure out what to post. One, I have gotten a little behind in my thanks posts, as I've gotten nine packages from 7 guys in the last 10 days. Two, is just that - NINE PACKAGES!?!?!!!!! Wow. It's hard to understand just how atypical this group's philosophy and attitude is. I really enjoy sending out cards to people, and hoping they like them, but I didn't know everyone here would be so into it that I would be getting just ALL KINDS of stuff - cards I've never seen before, stacks and stacks of really cool cardboard (and plastic!)... And the third thing I've been thinking, is that when I post, I have a hard time making the words sound as surprised and happy as I really am. The thanks I put up here are never adequate, to tell the guys who have sent me stuff just how much I appreciate their generosity, and their thinking of me, and so on and so on... Well, having said that, I'm gonna try anyway, and fellas, please know I really appreciate what you've sent. ROB GIOIA has sent me three envelopes, containing a total of 27 cards from 1956-1973. Absolutely great stuff, and THREE ENVELOPES! Thanks. LYNN MILLER just stuns me with more Hank Aaron cards than I've seen in a while. Plus a pamphlet from 1973 which chronicles each of Hank's homers up to #701. Priceless. That alone was a great surprise, but there was so much more. Also included was a 1960 Armour coin, and 1962 Topps stamp, and so many more cool Aaron cards. If I get time, I will tell you a (funny?) story about the coin over on the ramblings server. Wow, thanks. RICHARD KIMBALL sends over a handful of 1969 Topps cards, including the Yaz all-star. Nice! Thanks. RAY LUURS must have opened a few packs of 1956 cards recently, as he sent me a huge stack of cards from 1956-1974, including several stars. But the most surprising was two 1956 team cards that were very much non-Tipton, if you know what I mean. If these are the cards you're sending out, I'd love to see the condition of what you're collecting! Thanks!!! SEAN McGOWAN sends over some, oops, UV cards. But the names include George Brett and Steve Carlton... thanks for the help on that set, ERIK GREENWOOD surprises me with a full 300 count box, chock full of Fred McGriffs. This gives me several for my own collection, and of course plenty of trading material for the kids at the church! But the biggest suprrise was the 1951 Berk Ross card of Sam Jethroe, one of only two African-American players on the Boston Braves (the other was George Crowe. If anyone REALLY wants to surprise me, find a Boston-era card of one of these guys. And you've done it, Erik. Thanks, brother. Today's mail included the third of three packages from Rob "the Fireman" Gioia, but also the "last but not least" package: BRIAN BETZA, the new guy :) sent me an envelope with five treasures, the pinnacle of which was a 1953 Topps Jim Pendleton. Another African American, who played for the Milwaukee Braves before our beloved Hank got there. Beautiful card, and the oldest Topps Brave card I have. Thanks, Brian. It's simply overwhelming. I cannot imagine what it would have been like not having this wonderful group of ours as a support those first few weeks after Dustin's death. The kindness and generosity displayed by OBC was then and remains today a great comfort to our family. The huge stack of e-mails we received still sets on a shelf in the DZK Memorial Scholarship Fund "Board Room" which is appropriately next to the Room of Maxwell in our basement. The first official "Board Meeting" will be held on Friday March 24th which would have been my son's 25th birthday. One of the first orders of business will be a proclamation to acknowledge OBC via a plaque expressing our gratitude and appreciation to OBC as The Major Donor. To accompany the plaque I have started an OBC binder with pictures of OBCers I have and any and all additional members I can get my hands on. I think it is important that you all know that ALL donations will go directly to sending children to Hockey Camps. I really didn't realize when I joined that thanking everyone would be such work! Haha what a problem to have. I'm going to save the biggest surprise for last. I already mentioned (in my last thanks post) that Monday I got two packages, from Rob Gioia, who apparently loves to write my address on envelopes, and from the new guy Brian Betza. Great stuff, guys, thanks again. Then on Tuesday, I got ANOTHER two packages. One was the biggest single card surprise I've ever received, OBC or elsewhere, in the 24 years i've been collecting! I'll save that for last. But the other wasn't bad, either... FATHER PAT WATTIGNY sent an amazing stack of cards, everywhere from 1956 all the way through to a 1973 Carew! I'm beginning to really grow even more fond of the pre-57 Topps cards, because of the old standard size. It's awesome enough to get one of those, but you included six! Thanks, BRO! Wednesday didn't disappoint, either: EARL KILBOURNE must have heard I really am growing to love the early Topps cards, because he sent me a 1953, 55, 56, 58, and 59! And of course, an autographed OBC EEK! Thanks, Earl. Can someone tell me how you've all got these personalized cards? What's the story behind em? Are we doing it again in 2006? Thursday brought TWO MORE packages! BILL MALSON sends a handful of 1966 Topps, a set which really needed the help. Thanks, Bill. STEVE WASHBURN sent a 1970 and a couple of 1978s, and a bunch of UV cards with a vintage name we all love: BOWMAN. Add in a couple more vintage-related unmentionables, and overall, that's a wonderful box to sit down and explore! Thanks, Steve. My streak continued today, as I got ANOTHER two packages! T.J. VALACAK. a card from 1960 and another from 1969. Sure, this package takes those sets down another notch, but the best thing is that T.J. has now sent me FOUR packages so far, and all of them great stuff. ('specially all those Topps inserts!) What a great guy. I've been noticing how his name is all over the thanks posts for a while now. Everyone, let's have a round of applause for T.J., the hardest working man in OBC-biz! MATT HEILENMAN also comes through with a nice stack of nearly 50 cards, ranging from 1968 to 1972. Who is the hoodlum who trimmed those 70's? Still a cool stack of cards. Thanks, Matt. So, now for the stats, since I know baseball guys like that kind of stuff. Excluding Sundays (obviously), Ive gotten one or more packages every day for the last 7 days. I've gotten a package on 15 of the last 18 days. And on 7 of those days, I got 2 packages. And overall, I've averaged a package a day since the beginning of the year! What a great testimony to how great this group is! Okay now, back to the thanks. This is the biggie. A short while back I sent a 1962 Post Joey Jay card with blue lines, a variety that Andy Cook was missing for his master set. I expected nothing in return, as it wasn't intended as a trade. But he sends back... huh? A Harmon Killebrew rookie. What? WHAT??? He's one of my favorite players! And that's the oldest Killer by TWELVE YEARS - by which I mean, the oldest I had before was the 1967 Topps! Now this? Wow. Thank you to all. Andy Cook knocked me down, but everyone else's generosity astounds me as well. I hope to be able to pay some of you back with packages... someday... even though I know I don't have stuff like that to send... Thanks nonetheless. So in the last week, I've gotten packages from these guys: DAN ANGLAND, thanks to you, for a 1959 and a 1972. Yours was the fiftieth package I've received as part of OBC. What a dubious honor. ED SCHOTT, thanks to you again, for the 1967 Coke Cap of Hank Aaron, and half a dozen 1964's to keep it company. TOM HOUSLEY sent two packages that arrived on the same day, which included a '56, three '61s, a '65 Embossed, three Scratchoffs (1 from '70 and 2 from '71, and yes, I'd like to collect both sets, thanks for the '71 starters), eleven '75s, and five '75s. Nice assortment, Tom, thanks. And quite possibly the most surprising package comes from KENT GOTO, who sends along ELEVEN 1952 Topps, five 1954s, three 1955s, a 1956, forty-two 1958s, three 78s and a 79. Definitely a jaw-dropping package. This one gives me a really nice start on my 1952 Topps set. Thanks a bunch, Kent. Three days later (yes, my streak ended at 9 consecutive days), I got a package from MARSHALL WEST, who sent along three to help me make a little progress on my 1975 set. Those later set wantlists are shrinking slowly but surely. I just may see the 75-80 sets finished soon! Thanks for the help, Marshall. And today, ANTHONY ARBEENY's package arrived in my mailbox. A 1965, a 65 Embossed, a 68, 70, and four 72s found a new home today. Thanks, Ant. I thought I must have been hallucinating, as sick as I have been over the last few days. That's just so many great cards! But when I noticed today that all those 50's cards are still there proudly displayed in my 09-59 'shoebox' and all the rest are waiting to be put with their respective sets, I realized it's true - you are all so very generous. Nothing left to do but to start sending out whatever I can, as quick as I can, to as many of you as I can. Thanks again to all y'all. ================= Date: Sat, 18 Feb 2006 03:11:02 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "larrygersh" Subject: OBC Thanx Biggest OBC mail day in years as eight packages come. Tom Housley upgrades 2 Helmars to unscratched status; Andy Cook with 3

10 on the Helmars.
Also received a package from Mike Sepe, who Steve Rittenberg set me up

Another hit to the shrinking Helmar list comes from Ant Arbeeny who

Grebe and Bob Sage.

If anyone has medium to big lists of Helmar cards they want I'd like to
try and hit them. A small wantlist like mine might not be easy to hit
because there seem to be short cards but I'd look at them too. I have
searched quite a few pages but haven't found many Helmar lists posted.
Let me know if you have a list and where its at or give me one to look
at. I can put a starter set or two together too, let me know. I have
about 100 dupes left. If I've sent Helmars to you recently though, you
already have what I have from your list. I haven't gotten any new cards

Subject: 2005 HELMAR's are HISTORY!!!

Hello All,

I just wanted to thanks all of you that helped along the way, today I received a Chick Gandil card from Bill Scott. Bill is not part of either of our groups but is a friend of fellow trader Tom Housley. So Tom thanks for connecting me up with Bill so that I might complete my set.
I got onto the Helmar train late and was able to complete my set largely due to so many contributions from you fellas and a large lot from ebay (50 different cards for 1 cent, w/$25 S&H - this was mentioned in one of my earlier post). So no chips were consumed during the ride but now I would like to get some empty chip packages. If anyone has any of the packages available I would like to get some (just one of each will be fine - unless the packaging is different). I will trade you fairly for your consideration. Thanks again Bill (and Tom). BE WELL!!!

Hello All,

The kindness of OBC'ers continues and my mailbox held evidence of that fact. Thanks to:

Friar Bob Corvello adds to my growing collection of autographed PTC cards, I now have (8) and hope to get as many as I can (before you guys give `em all away). Thanks Bob for sending YOUR SIGNED card, it's a great addition to my collection.

Kent Goto connects with a `61 Post Cereal card of HOM'er Norm Cash for the "Cash Collection" and for kicks and giggles Kent includes a couple of the `72 Fleer Famous Feats cards that I needed with Hack Wilson and Eddie Plank leaving me with just a couple more in that set. Thanks for the 10 and under hits Kent, I'm putting something together for you.

I have been quite ill the past 5 - 6 days and had many good intentions of getting plenty of packages out but I found myself in bed most of our "winter break". Hope to still get a few items out but it will be no where near the volume I had hoped to get out. Hope all of you are doing better healthwise than I - BE WELL!!!

Thanks to 2 MARKs, 2 JOHNs, KENT, BOB, DAVE, PETER, and ED!

Here we go again. Lotsa mail this last week. Seven packages on
Thursday and Friday alone... yikes! I think my mail lady is gettin'

MARK TALBOT sends a nice package, with a spread of Braves, from
Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta. Sweet assortment, including one each
of 1950-1955 Bowman, one each of 1952-1959 Topps, and a bunch more
stuff from the last 25 years. Thanks Mark, it was truly a fun stack
of cards to see. My very first 1950 and 1951 Bowmans, too!

and another Mark...

MARK ZENTKOVICH responds quickly to some McGwires I sent him with a
bunch of cards of some of my favorites: Reggie, Schmidt, and the
second Griffey, Dale Murphy, and more Braves. Thanks Mark.

JOHN LEROUX helped a couple of my mid-70s sets as they inch toward
completion. 7 from 1975 and 2 from 1976... thanks for the help, John.

and the other John...

JOHN McLAUGHLIN sent a lotta stuff, including a 1970 Topps Lou Brock,
nine 71s, and sixteen 74s, along with 21 UV cards for sets I'm
getting close to finishing. Thanks, John.

KENT GOTO, who has already sent me some awesome stuff, lets me pick
through a rather large waiver wire, and get even more goodies. A
handful of Posties, Leaf, and some 1974s too. All Braves or my
favorite players. Thanks, Kent.

BOB D'ANGELO sent a 1959 Topps SCP of Dick Brodowski, with 4 sharp
corners. Really nice specimen. Thanks, Bob.

DAVE HORNISH takes the favorite player route to the extreme, and
sends a total of 100 very oddball items of Murray, Schmidt, Mantle,
Ruth, etc. I have a lot of players I like and collect, and he found
stuff for quite a few of em! Thanks, Dave.

PETER MEAD sent a couple for my 68 Topps Game set, two for my 69
Topps Deckle set, and a 1970, too. Thank you, Peter.

ED SCHOTT, after going through those 1973s he was talking about,
sends me nine of his spares. Good stuff, thanks Ed.

WEll, I certainly appreciate all you're sending. As I have said
recently, I will do my best to send as many cards to as many of you
as soon as possible, for thanks, and for just cause I can. After
all, that's what's so fun about all this!

Thanks again to the nine of you... I appreciate your generosity.

Subject: Been a while...

Hi all,
The postman rang the bell this afternoon as I slumbered upstairs. I'm
anticipating a few eBay lots arriving, so I sprang to my feet and ran downstairs
to catch him before he ran off. He was already next door, so I didn't chase him
down to zealously thank him for bringing me cards. I was too caught up with
the small BOX that was perched on my mailbox. HEY! This isn't from eBay. It's
from John Leroux - even better! It's been a while since I got a whole box of
cards... at least as far as I can remember (which isn't that long ago probably).
Inside were almost 100 hits to my double secret UV project, which apparently
isn't too hard to discover. Also included were a pair of hits to another
foolish UV quest of mine, which will probably take a lifetime to finish, if at all.
These two are very much appreciated. THANKS JOHN!!
Also arriving from the Great White North is a SCP from Grant Rainsley, who
answered my whining about a card I saw Tiger Dave offering in his eBay store.
I thought it was a Nellie Fox no bat variation from the 1963 Post set...
however, it was miscut so badly, I couldn't tell if it was a Jello or a Post.
Turns out that it is a Jello card, which leaves me wondering if the Post variation
actually exists or not. I'm starting to think that the card somehow became
listed incorrectly, because it's tough to tell the difference between the Post
and Jello cards from that year. Does anyone collecting the 1963 Post set have
this card (it's #36) without the bat? THANKS GRANT!! Grant went above and
beyond the call of duty on this one (most likely just to stop my complaining, but
I'll take it). Unfortunately, like many of his 'Slavery Island' projects, it
didn't quite turn out the way he (or I) had hoped. That's all for now. TAYL,

Ken M

Heya guys...
Duplicate thanks are better than no thanks, and since I'm not sure if I did

Dave Hornish- for a 5 pack of 1960s. That set is almost toast, down to a
bunch of stars. I can taste it! Thanks Dave, see you at the LI show soon...

Yaz pops in another needed 1960 of the famous Bobby Del Greco, who "belted
the cover off the ball at Rochester". Gotta miss those bios! Thanks Greg...

Peter Mead changes pace with 3 footballers of NY Titans (to be later the
Jets). Tough football season, but these classics sure made up for it! Thanks

And Bob Donaldson hits my 60 leaf set (which almost never gets hit) with a
pair including Roy Face. If I'm reading this right, Roy was 18-1 in 1959,
pretty close to my pitching record last year (but I had a pair of 2-hitters LOL).
Thanks Bob.

I'll be rambling next about the National and Bosox....

Thanks all..
