First...a short story about my latest OBC envelope. Ellen went in to check out our PO Box and came out with a couple of envelopes. Handing one of them to me, she said, "this one is from Peter Mead." Looking at the envelope, I noticed the return address had Denise Mead's name on it. I said, "That's not what it says on the label." Ellen just shook her head and said something about how she wasn't stupid...especially since envelopes with Denise Mead's name on it have been showing up for over 5 years now. I don't think Ellen's ever met Peter (If I remember correctly, when we met up at the Cleveland National, Ellen was visiting other places in Ohio that were more appealing to her). Considering other wives might have gotten suspicious about such an envelope...it just goes to show that OBC is as much a part of my family as the members related by blood. So, without any further delay... Thanks to PETER MEAD for a TCP -- a 56 Burgess and two from '59 including Schofield. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. First, ANDY COOK sends along an offering from his 1958 Topps set breakup that drops 20 cards from that wantlist -- about 12% of what I still needed! Herb Score, Del Crandall, "Mudcat" Grant and the Steve Bilko card from "The Book" highlight this package. As the 1958 set is one of my sentimental favorites...this package is especially appreciated. Second, MARK TALBOT returns fire after I sent him a stack of oddball pages, and does it in a big way. Along with a Tigers schedule for the recently ended season (you know, the one that saw them spank the Yankees in the playoffs), Mark sends an MSA disc of Red Sox fan favorite Bucky Dent, a pair of hits to my birthyear set -- Psycho specials, Reggie In Action and a pic of Big Willie Horton as a little tyke -- and 5 cards from the 75 Mini set including Bill Freehan. But Mark doesn't stop there. He hits the Steelers wantlist (last updated in Aug. 2005) with 3 cards..a '69 4-in-1, a '74 Pearson and the final card I needed for the Wonder Bread Steelers (a '75 Franco Harris). Mark also sends along a first...my very first PSA graded card, also showing Harris. Actually, I've been toying with the idea of collecting my Steelers cards in graded form (to keep them protected...any graded baseball PSA stuff will likely get freed from its slab), so he may have just dragged me into a new direction with that. The "personal" delivery this week was from my wife Ellen. She grabbed my wantlist one day when I was working and visited a card seller. She found a few cards for me, including a 53 Bowman, a 58 Topps,a couple of 66s, 70, 71 and 72 high #s and a '75 mini Nettles. And she paid $10 for the entire stack! Yep, I'm certainly glad she's let me keep her around. On another personal note, I may be moving into a new house this week. I'll post that new address once I've gotten settled. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. The first is a promised delivery of 8 hits to the newly started 1962 Topps set from Grant Rainsley. I sent Grant the last card he needed for his 1960 Fleer set and these are the return fire. As of a couple days ago, I had just ONE high number in my set - the last card #598. To make matters worse, I pulled the card and sent it to OBC prospect Rick Johnson, as it was the last card HE needed to finish his set. Well, Grant starts to refill the back of the binder with two high number hits included in his package. THANKS GRANT!! Finally from the House of Maxwell in Grand Blanc, MI (which technically isn't IN Canada, but is north of a few cities from there) comes another trio of hits from Earl Kilbourn. Minnie Minoso is added to the binder along with a neatly marked checklist. Apparently, the kid working on this set felt the need to underline the few remaining cards on the checklist so they stood out better. Any hits to my list is no small feat to say the least! Thanks Gary! The weekend in Chicago was a great trip for me. Not necessarily for cardboard from my lists, but for the chance to meet up with friends in person. This trip I was able to catch up with George Vrechek, TJ Valacak and Gary Mandell in the snack area on Saturday. Outside the group, I got to put faces to the names of a few other trading buddies while there. It really is a joy to meet and talk with fellow collectors when possible. While I forgot to bring my wantlists, I was able to write a few down using my internet connection in the hotel room. Only a couple of T205s were picked up but I would estimate there were more than 500 there for the picking. Biggest disappointment was not even remotely being able to afford a card I really wanted in the Wilhelm with R variation. Best part of the show was nabbing a Broadleaf T205 common, neat T205 Tinker Honest back with a P25 stamp on the back and picking out a few T42 Birds and T69 Sights and Scene cards for my sets. Then there was a nice sized lot of Tipton 50's and 60's cards that I will be dishing out soon. Since I didn't have all my lists with me, I did more walking and talking than searching boxes. I did manage to get to talk to SGC about helping with a few things they are considering for their updated registry and the topic of Sportcasters was brought up. Oh yeah, I had forgotten all about those subscription cards when I was a kid! As soon as I got home this week, I ran over to the folks house to dig through my old closet but no sportcasters were to be found. When questioned, of course, my folks didn't have a clue what I was talking about...arg! Kind of like when I asked about all my Lego stuff from when I was a kid too, I wanted to lug it over here for my kids to enjoy. Nope, they said, you must have already taken those -- they aren't in this house. That was about 6 years ago and last summer, they came over one night with a big box that had something written on top...."Shawn's Lego"...YEAH! They found it in the garage attic for whatever reason but they were right, they weren't in "the house". :) So, my old sportcaster cards may still be hiding somewhere in that house (or garage), I just have to do a little more digging! While I'm on the Sportscaster subject, does anyone else remember these wonderful "cards" from the late 70's? Better yet, does anyone have any they would be willing to part with. :) I think I might have found something else to chase...finally! While I do remember there were tons of different subjects, not just sports, I'll have to do some research for any checklists online that may help me decide just which topics I might chase. Anybody know if these cards are easily found today? I haven't seen any in a long time but that doesn't mean that they are tough, I had just forgotten about them and have not been really looking for them. Any insight or info would be greatly appreciated. All in all, it was a good trip for me. The only down side was on Saturday afternoon, I went back to my hotel to watch the football game. The fire alarms were going off in the hotel and the elevators were not working. Not able to take the stairs either because someone is forcing everyone outside but they do know it is a false alarm. So I started walking outside and noticed the sportsbar...hmmm, I slipped out of the line and into the sportsbar where there were about 5 other people getting ready to watch the game. So I sat down and ordered a VERY expensive chicken sandwich ($38...OUCH!) and watched the game there until the fire alarm stopped ringing. Back to the room and I laid down on the bed to watch a little more of the game before I headed back to the show. Fell asleep during the game and woke up after the show was over. Was really frustrated that I missed the last 3 hours of the show but hey, after eating a $38 chicken sandwich I think I was due for a nap! :) Got up early on Sunday and headed for home. Lost my parking ticket so it only took 30 minutes to get out of the parking garage. Other than that the trip home was a breeze, stopping at my customary refueling spot in Atlanta, IL. Gotta stop at my towns namesake in IL because....well....I don't really know other than it's just neat! Both fattened up my 1962 Topps quest. One puffy comes from Bob Reed and contains a slew of woodies to help that set along. Bob also added a nice assortment for a set just outside the newness limit for this server, but they're very much appreciated for one of my 9-set projects. THANKS BOB!! Also arriving - and the reason the postman rang the bell and scurried off - was a box, that's right, a BOX of 62's from OBC prospect Rick Johnson. I took advantage of an early copy of his wantlist (he had IM'ed me about a week ago proposing a trade). Since I'm not particularly fond of or good at prearranged trades, I mailed him a small box loaded with mostly hits to his football lists (including a Johnny U. to kill his 1960 Topps set). I also pulled the only high number I had from my 1962 set, since it was the very last one he needed for his. Well, Rick returns the same box I sent him loaded with 62's including no less than 34 high numbers plus well over 100 'low number' hits. This basically cuts my wantlist in half. (Bad news for you guys who were slow on the draw when I first posted the list I guess). Included among those were Maris, Mays, Berra and a bunch of minor stars. I was already leaning towards approving Rick for membership. Subject: what a group--

If only all of the few T206s I have look like the trimmed Magee that Chuck Paris sent my way. What a neat card--I am actually afraid of completely catching that pre-war bug. Many thanks Chuck.

More pounding of the wantlist from FOOT members--The King of Oddballs shares a few odds and ends with one of his loyal subjects. Duracell and Cap'n Crunch form some of those UV years and then Mike goes back in time. He finishes off my 1978 Burger King set with the last two bingos (Erik Greenwood practically polished this set off a month or so ago). And then Mike adds a stack of 1970 OPC--a set for which Mike and Mark Talbot have provided approx. 95% of the cards. Last but not least are two 1953 Topps high numbers and a 1975 Dan Fouts rookie card. Great package King! And thanks.
