Hello All, I'm back in the home office after a roller coaster ride of a Tiger Baseball game that saw the home-town heroes lose to the KC Royals who get to play spoiler and knock our boys out of 1st place and on a plane bound for the Big Apple to take on the "Evil Empire" Stankiee's. It was a slug-fest and the Tigers had every opportunity to put it away but fell short, in the meantime some cardboard goodies came in over the past few days and it's time to get out the acknowledgments. John Leroux warns me that I should be seated when I open his envelope, and he was right to warn me. Inside the envelope was a well trimmed `52 Topps card of William Werle w/black back that I was expecting from the waiver wire, and John slipped a few surprises. The Jimmy Piersall card from `56 w/white back takes another variation off the list but the final surprise took my breath away. The `61 Topps Mickey Mantle card is no longer on my want list thanks to the mind blowing generosity of John Leroux. To many, the card would be "ugly" with all the creases and missing paper on the back, but it is a work of art to me John - THANKS SO MUCH!!! Peter Mead "spikes" the ball back into my court in the longest on-going trade recorded in the history of card collecting. Peter pulls a single from his `72 Fleer Famous Feats set to complete my set with the final card I needed. Fred Toney and Hippo Vaughn who pitched no-hitters against each other if 1917 is the feat featured on this final card and I truly appreciate your generous offering Peter!!! Finally, Ed Schott finds a `76 Hostess upgrade for me, an Orioles pitcher by the name of Jim Palmer, anybody ever hear of this guy? Was he any good? (HeeHee) Thanks Ed for passing this one along!!! After three days of Tiger nail biters and an unexpected series sweep by the KC Royals these fine pieces of cardboard were welcomed distractions - Thanks again John, Peter and Ed. Thanks go out to: Shawn Adkins, who kindly sends a 34 Goudey my way just in case he owes me. Well, he didn't, so now I do! Get those lists up Shawn! Anthony Arbeeny, dear old Double A, sends a great package as part of a recent swap! Fourteen basketball hits from the 70s (Bill Bradley, Jerry West, Lew Alcinder, just to name a few), two 75 pigskin hits (the Juice is loose, with Franco Harris riding shotgun -- did I just say shotgun?), and an awesome 62 Post SP of Jerry Lynch make for a jaw-dropping delivery! Bob D'Angelo sends a couple of flats filled with my wife's favorite player -- I cannot say who he is, since he is a uv player on uv cards -- but I think I can point out that he is a future HOF catcher of the currently surging Detroit Tigers! My wife will not let us watch the games, as we went to our first Tiger game during the season ending home-stand (collapse), and game one of the playoffs. They seem to be doing just fine without us! Great stuff Bob! She sends her thanks, as do I! Bob Donaldson finishes a nice little swap, sending a great 53 Bowman high number of Clyde Vollmer (trimmed, at 6 foot one inch I think Clyde could stand it), a 55 Bowman variation of Frank Bolling, and a 41 Double Play of Red Ruffing! Great stuff Bob! Tom Housley sends a nice trifecta of 1970 Kellogg's 3-D pleases (three D, squared, if you will)! Thanks Tom! Spike Glidden spikes some solid hits to my wantlist, hitting the 41 Double Play set with Red Rolfe and Bill Dickey, adding two 49 Bowmans (Rex Barber and Ron Northey), and adding a uv hit featuring the totally awesome trader, Spike Glidden! Thanks! Peter Mead continues the assault on the 41 DP set, sending Dodgers Fred Fitzsimmons and Joe Vosmik, sends an amazing twenty 1979 Topps Comics (including Dave Parker and Steve Garvey), and thoughtfully adds a uv card of one of my favorite players -- Vada Pinson. His 1971 Topps card was one of my first vintage cards, and that photo left an instant impression -- NOW THAT IS BASEBALL! Check out #275 to see what I am talking about! Thanks Tom Massimo knows a thing or two about massive hits -- he kindly sends two packages my way in recent days, with the first containing two uv OPC ice cards to help get a particular set off the ground, and the other containing thirty-five vintage football hits from 70-78! Great stuff Tom! Aaron Shirley sent some much appreciated birthday wishes my way a coupe of weeks ago, including a couple of 74 Kellogg's hits (Bando and Rick Monday) to sweeten the deal! Thanks for thinking of me Aaron! Mark Talbot echoed Aaron's sentiments with a card and cards! Inside the first card was a lovely note and two 66 Rub-Offs -- two no-names like Mathews and Marichal! I love my wife, but sometimes I gotta wonder how she reasons things out. We have a wooden pigeon holed little what not shelf on the kitchen counter. It has 4 slots for mail to be put in. We have 4 kids, so when they were here, it worked great, they could check to see if they got any mail every day. We still get the occasional envelope that still gets put in their slot, except for our youngest daughter, she is here everyday and usuall brings the mail in when she comes to visit. So, my darling wife, without telling me, has been putting my mail in Angela's old mail slot. I NEVER EVEN LOOK IN THERE!!!!! There was never any need for me to look in there!! Last night, I was looking for some postage stamps and moved this little shelf to see if there were any stamps behind it that may have fallen off. There was a familiar return address on the one long envelope, 30 Joggins Court. Hey, that's for me! I took out all 10 envelopes from the slot, all for me. Eight of them were from OBCland!!! It was like Christmas in October! Now I need to thank everyone for the aged cardboard. So, with hat in hand, I want to thank the following for being so kind and patient. Ed Schott(2), TJ Valacak, Rob the Fireman(2), Mattman Heilenman, Dave Hornish(19 big hits to the 1960's set, WOW), Mike Rich and Bob D'Angelo. The group of cards you guys sent is amazing. He starts me off with new Cubs manager Lou Pinella and former Cub Dave Kingman - both from the vintage 79 set. My first ever package from Linda Fitak came in the mail today and as many of you have already found out, it was indeed, full of interesting stuff. The cards came wrapped in a flyer for a card show in LaPalma that features Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco and Walt Weiss who will sign autographs. I wondered if McGwire was short of money or something to come out and sign until I saw the prices. McGwire signs for $9.50, Canseco for $15.00 and Weiss for $5.50. The flyer was from 1989. So, to the cards. First, the vintage stuff: Three '56 Topps cards, Don Mueller, Brooklyn Dodger, Rube Walker and White Sox 3rd baseman, (though more famously known for his Detroit employment), George Kell. Next, three '76 Kelloggs, Rudi, D.Cash and Busby. Next, Linda all but destroys one of my remaining non-vintage lists with 20 hits on the 89 UD set, trimming it down to 4 to go. A Ryan and Murray were included there. Things begin to stray from the normal now. Two "Origins of Baseball" featuring Mike 'King' Kelly and the 1875 Boston Red Stockings. A Sporting News, (probably some type of Conlin), card of Red Sox star, Wes Ferrell and two football cards, (SaGe Collectibles) of USC Heisman winners Matt Leinhart and Reggie Bush. Finally, Linda added to my Yaz collection with one of those Epic Materials cards from Upper Deck that has a piece of a game jersey worn by Yaz, put into the card. I am ignorant of current sets and such. This one seems to be something you had to have sent to you after pulling a game winning card from a pack. The back says "Congratulations! You have received a game-used jersey card from the Upper Deck Company." It's pretty cool to have one of these. Three packages arrived lately, two from OBC and one other of note... PETER MEAD sent three hits to my 1968 Topps Game set, and three more for my 1960 Topps set. Something about the 60 trio struck me as strange: their first names are Hobie, Albie, and Bubba. Three guys destined for greatness... or maybe to be made fun of. One or the other. Nice hits regardless. Thanks, Peter! BOB DONALDSON sent a sweet 1950 Bowman of Boston Brave Willard Marshall, for my Boston Braves collection. Really cool card; thanks Uh-oh, I've been thinking again. When I say "my" sets, it may be more accurate to say that these sets are "ours," because you are all totally building them more than I would ever have been able to. Here's proof, as we get into the contents of the third package: I finally received the FINAL card for my 1978 Topps set. I'm still hoping to upgrade card 380 (Ted Simmons) to the "decent or better" range... but anyway, the last card was #6, the Nolan Ryan record breaker card. It came from someone outside of OBC, but the next to last card was the "actual" (meaning: most expensive) Nolan Ryan card, which came from none other than Linda Fitak. Those were two major hits to be missing at the end, and Linda's hit was VERY much So. Anyway, thanks. Wow, I've been so busy w/ cards lately that I'm a few days behind on Thanks - here's a recap from the past 3 days: MARK HOLLAND hits 2 69T, 10 74s, a handful of cards for some "secret lists", and 7 77T including Winfield and Pops Stargell! JERRY COKER fills a 3 pocket w/ 7 74T & 2 69T! BOB D'ANGELO keeps me busy w/ a pair of books; 1 pertains to the almost 40 year history of the Padres, and the other to the 1980 GA DON RICE spreads it across a few lists w/ a 76 Hostess Palmer (down to 5 on that list), 8 74T & an Archie Manning RC for my 72T set! JEFF DELOTT tries to help one one list (3 69T) while encouraging me to start a new quest w/ a pair of 52B! I've got enough now by OBC standards to start the set, but I've also got a bigger list to type up PETER IVERSEN sent a box - I didn't realize that I could get that many cards from one person for my current W/L. Well, Peter sent a few cool cards I had listed - 62 Post Klu, 63T C/L variation, 81T bkb hits and a Specs Toporcer from a commemorative Fleer set. Great hits all, but that wasn't enough for Peter. :-) He emptied his dupes box from 79T FB and sent me 160 cards! Even cooler, these weren't just the forgotten players: 3 different Walter Paytons, Fouts, Dorsett, Riggins and a Doug Williams RC were among those arriving! Now for the kicker - I previously owned ZERO cards from the set! I was stunned, but am now in the enviable position of starting another OBC-only set! Great stuff! Thanks SO MUCH guys! OBC - You gotta love it! ================= Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2006 22:45:48 -0000 To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: "mikesportsfan" Subject: Lots of thanks this week Not only is this a great time to be a sports fan in the Detroit area, I received 3 special packages this week. Bob Donaldson, sends a SCP of a 1950 Bowman variation missing much of the front, envelope graced by a Detroit Tiger Greenberg stamp. Bama also sent along a SCP of a Tattoo Orbit Haines (I am amazed that I am down to around 22 for this set). This card is almost a match for the Donaldson card since it has no back. Funniest part is that of the almost 40 Orbits I have it still would rank in the top 1/4 in condition. I also got a package from my Oddball Queen, Linda. In addition to hits to a 1/2 dozen UV sets, Linda hit 4 different vintage sets on 4 different lists. Of course her envelope also had sports stamps on it. Included were a 69 Topps Super (I now have 5), A 78 Papa Gino Evans to get me within 10, a 1970 Washington Senators Traffic Safety card which is my second. For those of you that know my slogan; 1 is a type card; 2 and you are collecting the set. So another set "officially" on my list. Additionally, she sent me a 1980 Stop N' Go FB 3D card. I need to find my others, as I have not even listed the ones I need on this set yet. So another set to be added so people can have something to hit. The only concern is Linda hit my Conlon lists and I am now down to an unlucky 13 under 1000. Thanks for the special packages. Ken reaches hero status by sending me a 1976 Topps Ted Williams to finish off that set. What a "Splendid" finish to the set. Ken refuses to stop with simply being a hero. He includes three hits to my 79 set, including Eddie Murray and Pete Rose, 11 hits to my 78 set - taking that set under 10, including Carlton Fisk and Thurman Munson, a 1974 card picturing the great Lynn Nolan Ryan, a 79 fb card showing the rushing leaders, Walter Payton and Earl Cambell, and finally, a 55 tv card autographed by Ken himself. Ken, I am sure you can understand how grateful I am for killing my 76 set, but I am sure you don't realize what a special package you sent me. The sox teams rank a one - two in my heart, with Red leading the way. To receive any Ted Williams card is always a treat. But you also threw in a 78 Fisk card. Growing up, I idolized a few players, and Fisk was number one for me. That love affair started in 1981. I had come home from school and turned on the tv to watch baseball. Luckily, the SOx wre on. If my dad found me watching Cub games, I risked being grounded. Fisk and the White Sox were playing the Red Sox (my love for the Red Sox would start in 1983 with the arrival of Wade Boggs. I'll leave that ramble for another day). I did not know how significant this game was, but it was Fisk's first game back in Fenway. The first thing I noticed about Fisk is that he wore number 72. That was the year I was born. I had never seen anyone in baseball wear number 72. In that game, he hit a three run home run in the 8th inning (might have been the 7th). The homer turned out to be a game winner, and I was hooked. Pudge was my man. So, thanks for the Fisk. The final throw in of significance is the 79 rushing leaders card picturing Earl Cambell and Walter Payton. Easily, my favorite two football players. The reason for Payton is obvious. I have grown up in Chicago. Even though he is no longer with us,he is still the man. The Earl Cambell love is attributed to my mother. Back in 79, she bought me an Earl Cambell jersey. She had bought my brother a Coaboys jersey for Christmas. He likes the Cowboys. She doesn't know why she bought me an Oilers jersey, but she did. That is the most information I can get from her. My brother (who is 8 years older than me) tells me I saw an Oilers game on tv and I wouldn't stop talking about Earl Cambell. Somehow, I got a jersey, and I was hooked. Anyways, thank you Ken for such a great package. I have only been a member of this great group for 14 months, but I am still amamzed by the generosity of everyone in this group. Thanks Ken! Valacak" Subject: Double thanks Two weekend thanks going out today. The first goes to TOM HOUSLEY who knocks off #271 of my 1974 set. I only recently discovered I was missing 271 when I went to place a 270 Ron Santo in that set. This is one of the problems of keeping my sets in boxes. Thank you Tom for the helping HANDS. Another thanks goes out to LINDA FITAK. As is her custom, Linda knocks off some hits to my wantlists and includes some interesting sport and non-sport material. Here's the breakdown. One hit to my 57 set (white sox Jim Rivera), 2 to the 58 set(including White Sox Earl Torgeson), one to the 59 set(Cubby Art Ceccarelli), one to the 60 set, (a local legend here in Chicago by the name of Jimmy Piersall) Two hits to the 62 set(JC Martin from the Sox), one to the 63 picturing former sox hurler Billy Pierce in a Giants uniform, and a 64 card of White Sox outfielder Charlie Maxwell. Linda, I definitely appreciate the time put into sending out a Chicago themed package. Thank you. Linda also sends out twenty cards picturing different baseball/football players. A few highlights are cards of new champs Albert Pujols and Jeff Weaver. I really like the card of Satchel Paige, and a 2006 Clemente card. Linda also includes a few of those Target Dodger cards. One of the cards pictures Tito Landrum. Tito hit a home run in th e83 playoffs that absolutely deflated the Chicago White Sox. A few non sport issues are highlighted by some tobacco cards, one of which has a picture of hops. (Linda must know that I like beer). Another highlight is a Charlie's ANgel card. I can remember having Charlie's Angel cards growing up, along with Star Wars, Elvis, Mork and Mindy, and Battlestar Gallactica. Not sure what happened to those, but this card brings back some good memories. Thanks Linda. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend. Congrats to all the cards fans out there. I have had the pleasure of visiiting St. Louis a few times. A great baseball town. Be safe. ================= To: "OBC Thanks" Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2006 12:09:03 -0400 From: "Matthew Heilenman" Subject: Two Times Thanks !! That said, I received 3 packages on Thursday. Mac Wubben completes a swap of plastic pages, with some 12 count pages accompanied by a pair of UV cards, getting me down to 1 in my 1990 Post BB set. Ken Morganti sent package #2. Ken and I may be the only ones in this universe collecting the 1971 Kellogg's BB copyright variations AND also the Red Man tobacco variations of the expiration of the mail-in offer on the backs. Ken sent along 5 1971 Kellogg's no 1970 variations, including Gaylord "I taught Kenny Rogers" Perry. Then Ken, in a cruel streak sends along 2 1954 Red Man in the form of Cardinals Red Schoendienst and Enos Slaughter. To finish the package was yet another Cardinal in the form of a 1953 Slaughter (reducing my list to only McDougald to finish the base set - back variations coming up!). The last package was from Peer Mead. A week ago, I e-mailed Peter and "chastised" him for having the nerve of sending someone else 1 of the last 2 cards I needed for my 1977 Topps Cloth BB set. He e- mailed back a mea culpa. Well in come s apackage with the other card, Believe it or not, yet another Cardinal in Lou Brock!
