Fortunately, these are just a few days old and not an entire year old, although it seems like I've been a little lax at times in the Bill Malson hits the newly posted gridiron list with a trio of of beauties. THANKS BILL!! John Harrell swaps off four T205's from his set in exchange for some non-Polar Bear backs in my binder. THANKS BAMA!! I was going to put mine in the mail today, but I remembered that despite my continuous protests, the post office has taken the day off - probably to plan their next rate increase. I'd also like to thank everyone for being a part of this wonderful group. I'd thank people individually, but I'd feel awful if I left anyone out. You know who you are, especially if you've: A) Donated cards, time, and/or money into one of our recent auctions. It's these kinds of projects that show what OBC is really all about. B) Met up with me at The National, Ft. Washington, or any other shop/show/city I've attended in the past year. Just getting to hang out with you all makes the trip worthwhile, even if I didn't buy a single card. C) Provided me with a place to stay while I was at one of the above locations. You can't put a price on that kind of hospitality. D) Stopped by my house and allowed me to show off a little of my collection - it's not too often I can show it to someone who appreciates what's been a labor of love over the past 28 years or so. E) Read one of my silly notes - it's great to have a place to vent frustration, share my joys/sorrows and gain a little more knowledge about the hobby once in a while ...and oh yeah, F) Taken the time to look at my list and an even bigger thanks if you were fortunate enough to FIND a card or two on it! It always makes my day when the mailbox isn't all bills and junk mail. Like the old saying goes, cardboard I can find almost anywhere, but it's friends like the ones I have in OBC that I really treasure. THANKS EVERYONE!! I hope everyone has a terrific 2006. I did not get a chance to thank everyone before for all the help and advice they gave me regarding the trip. Since it was my first time to the Big Apple, that advice really helped me get around! It was a good time had by all, and especially good for me, as I had five interviews for tenure-track positions for the next school year (my current position is only a one year position, and while there is the possibility of renewal, a little more security would be right up my alley). It is nice to be back home, but that was a chore in itself, as the five hour trip from Oakland turned into a 19 hour adventure, with the weather washing out or just flooding most of the roads between Oakland and Eureka. A new year's resolution for me this year is too get back to my old form of thanking people more regularly for the great cardboard they send my way, and to get more packages to the mailbox this year then last. So, with that in mind, (and before this turns into a ramble -- TOO LATE!) thanks go out to: EEK, who was kind enough to send a couple of 79 Kellogg's hits my way, as well as a 62 Post of Ken Boyer! Thanks for the autographed EEK card as well, my friend! Gersh sent a nice looking group of 70 OPCs my way (15 in all), and they are welcome additions to my Canadian collection! Bob Donaldson sends a six-pack of hits, including enough Kellogg's to really rot my teeth (one from 73 and four great ones from 74, including Billy Williams)! Thanks for the great cards Bob! Don Rice sends more tooth rotting material in the form of ten Hostess hits spread over their entire late 70s run, including Dusty Baker! Great cards Don -- Thanks! Steve Rittenburg and Peter Mead both sent auction winnings my way our recent event -- thanks to both of them for the help in making that event a success (and thanks to Steve for the autographed Steve Rittenburg card)! Ed Schott sent two flats my way in recent weeks, with the first containing a GREAT LOOKING 1967 Topps high number of the A's rookies that year (hardly ever see hits from those 67s!), and the second flat brought a 79 Hostess Darrell Porter and a 1980 OPC hit of one of my favorite childhood pitchers -- the Mad Hungarian, Al Hrabosky! Great cards Ed -- thanks for thinking of Bob Reed really helps out the Kellogg's run with a group of nine 1979 hits, including Chris Chambliss, Dwight Evans, and George Brett! Bob also throws in a nice bonus -- a great looking 1960 Topps high number of Ed Roebuck! Great cards Bob -- Thanks a ton! Yaz closes out this edition of the thanks express, as he sent a hit to my favorite set -- the 56 set -- in the form of a Joe Black back variation! Thank for the SCP Yaz -- opening up an envelope and seeing a card from 56 never fails to please! Thanks again, all around! Casey may not be a MVP candidate but he was much loved here in Redland. Pittsburgh got a steal. Hopefully, Cincy can make up for it with a Bengals win over the Steelers this week. Since I was out of town directing a retreat that weekend I was unable to take advantage of his generous offer. When I called my daughter, Kelli, to ask if she was interested she said "I'll be there if I have to walk". Fortunately she and my grandson, Nathan, did not have to don their walking shoes but rather "floated on a cloud all the way there" (another Kelli quote). Being an avid Wing Nut, Kelli was in awe as she watch Nathan skate around the Winged Wheel at center ice followed by a tour of the locker room, press box, and all the luxury suites. Hi all, First off, very belated thanks out to TJ Valacak, who was the first to hit my list this year (which gives you an idea of how late this is). TJ sent over a four pack of footballers back when the Pats were still playing. THANKS TJ!! Today brought a pair of noteworthy packages. The postman rang my doorbell, because there was a puffy and he knows that I can't wait to rip into them at the first possible minute. Also, I sometimes fall asleep with my face pressed up against the window waiting for him to arrive and the doorbell wakes me up. There was some new snow/slush on the ground this morning and that apparently made things go a little slower than normal and he was delayed from his normal 11:18 AM delivery time (not that I notice that sort of thing.) Along with the puffy, there was an OBC envelope from Washington DC. It was a SCP from Mac Wubben in the form of a very sharp looking 1963 Topps Fran Tarkenton. Mac notes that he was sorry to see the Pats lose, but he was cheering for them and that was probably why they lost. I'm not blaming you Mac and the second year Tark helps cheer me up a lot! THANKS MAC!! In a display of incredible restraint, I was watching the rest of my TV show before tearing into the envelopes (although they probably wouldn't have lasted past the next commercial break) and the postman rang the doorbell again! I jumped up hoping that maybe he forgot to deliver another puffy or an enormous box of cards. Unfortunately he only stopped back because he thought he had forgotten to scan the delivery confirmation bar code on the puffy from eBay. (He was right.) Now as for the package, I put in a bid on a group of low grade 1972 Kellogg's ATG's (lot #8751000820, which was a total of 26 cards including four Ruths) with the outside hope that maybe one or two of them would be the tough to find Rold Gold cards. I won the lot for the minimum bid of ten bucks. I also put in a bid on a complete set of the Rold Gold cards, but my MB of ten bucks was shot down and I didn't get a chance to bump up the bid before it ended... good thing after all I guess. The 26 cards arrived today and it turns out that eight of the cards are the tougher Rold Gold cards including three of the Ruths! I managed to cut my list in half to just four cards. (3-McGraw 8-Traynor 10-Collins and 13-Gehrig) I have a few 72 ATG's to trade, so if you're working on the set, PLMK. I also have four of the Rold Gold cards to trade - both Ruths - #6 and #14, #9 Wagner and #5 Sisler. BTW, if anyone is unfamiliar with the sets, the 1970 Rold Gold and 1972 Kellogg's All Time Greats sets look identical, except for the copyright on the back... which is why you can sometimes get a deal like I did this time. If you happen to have one of the four I need with the 1970 copyright and don't particularly care, let's make a deal Ken M ================= Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2006 15:32:44 EST To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Celenox@aol.com Subject: Four for Wednesday?
