It was a great day for the game in Mike's very special seats right behind home plate where we watched the home team get shutout by the tribe from Cleveland. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable afternoon. Mike of course brought cardboard goodies for yours truly that came from Toronto, one of his stops in his "Great Adventure 2005". I was almost starting to lose hope, when it finally turned up today. Without further adieu, very late (but still hearty) thanks go out to: Kevin Martens, who hands a semi0high 1957 Topps hit to me at the swap Mark Talbot, who give me two of his own extra-special original baseball cards, as well as ten hits to my recently added 1970 OPC set! He later would lead me find twenty hockey hits for my 70s sets in his dupes box! Thanks Mark! EEK, who not only willingly shares his bedroom with me (along with Ray Luurs and Mike Rich -- make up your own story there), but also give me seven 1979 Kellogg's, as well as one of his own OBC trading cards! Mike Wierzbicki, who hands me five Hostess hits, including the great Goose Sal Domino was the first person to throw cards my way at the National (actually, almost immediately after my arrival to Chicago), as he hands me a 1960 Topps high number of Tony Curry, as well as three variations from the 1970 Topps set!. He would hit me later at the swap with a uv RC of the great hockey player (the college professor responsible for getting me into hockey LOVED that man). I would tell you who it is, but.... you know those uv cards. I probably have said to much already! Regardless, thanks both times Sal! Tom Housley adds two more variations from the 1970 set, helping Sal finish that set and remove it forever from my list (at least, forever until the Gremlins show up!) He also adds a 1970 Kellogg's hit! At the swap, the list of kindnesses grew to include some 74 team checklists and a Roger Staubach for my shrinking 1973 Football set! Mike Rich provides room, and some board (cardboard, that is), letting me pull a Dairy Isle disk of Carlton Fisk, a 64 Giant of Vada Pinson, as well as handing me hit OBC card of -- himself! Soon to be member Randy Wilberg added two nice 55 Bowmans for that very short list -- he would remember me by mailing me one more, cutting that list down to just one more card! If that was not enough, Randy was kind enough to give me an extra ticket he had for me to get into the show -- a true act of kindness that stretches beyond the cardboard. Randy is definitly the kind of guy you find on the top shelf, next to the good scotch! Chris Stufflestreet would do me the kindness of handing me several Kellogg's cards from the 70s as well as a Red Man of Robin Roberts (a sweet card)! Ray Luurs, besides the wonderful bed-time stories, also handed my another of those gorgeous Red Man cards (my wife even agrees). He hands over a 54 Crandell, which I believe was my first Red Man from that year! George Vrechek was kind enough to let me take a Salutation Exhibit of Harland Clift -- hits to that list are few and far between for me, so that SCP was greatly appreciated! Larry Zurawski, however, probably came up with the shock of the swap when he laid out a 1956 Topps pin of Indian Jim Hegan! The 56 set is my all-time favorite, so I decided to add this 56 selection to my list as well. Larry doubles my collection of those tough pins with his addition (I already have Carlos Paula)! Thanks for the great collectable! He also allows me to pull some more Kellogg's hits from his short stack, as well as four vintage Fleer Kent Goto kindly let me pull four hits for my 77-78 basketball list, cutting into an already shrinking list! Gersh added yet one more of those classic Red Man cards to my collection with one from the 55 edition! Last, but certainly not least, big thanks are due to Steve Rittenberg! From his numerous 5000 count boxes I was allowed to pull hits for my 57 Football set (cut in half, but still in PT condition!), 1971 and 1980 OPC baseball cards, several hockey hits from the 70s, and a starter set of 78-79 basketball (among numerous other vintage cards, both given and sold)! Thanks for your kindness Steve -- it was a pleasure finally meeting you! Actually, the pleasure was all around, as I got to meet several old friends for the first time, and even see one or two that I had not laid eyes on for a while! Even without a single piece of cardboard -- the 2005 National will be remembered for years to come! With this busy lives of ours we take all our families for granted. If your Mom and Dad are in another state, call them and let them know you love them If you kids are at school or married and moved away, or just doing their own thing with their friends, stop them as they walk out the door to go hang with their friends and hug them, tell them how proud you are of them and how much you love them If they are out of state, call them.. And if possible have a family dinner today, with your whole family. If you have that sister or brother that you stopped talking to for some dumb reason, let it go today and call them..go visit them. The dude in the sidecar is leaning out the way that a sailor leans way out, practically falling in the water. Thank you much Professor, not just for the cardboard, but for being a great roommate and fellow traveler while in Chi-town. From fellow FOOT member MARK TALBOT came the following OPCs. From SAL DOMINO came 4 more OPCs this time from the 75 list, which included a Kaline Highlights. Thanks again Sal for the cards and for the great entertainment you always seem to provide. From MIKE WIERZBICI I obtained 5 more 58's. I was good to see you again, Mike. Although we can say this about all OBCer's, Mike is truly one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. From LARRY ZENTKOVICH I got a 53T of Tiger Ted Gray. I was great meeting you Larry, we all look up to you, some of us more than others, huh Sal? From STEVE RITTENBERG came a shinny Mr. October from one of my favorite sets. Steve also conspired with Mr. Morganti to provide me with starter sets of DonRuss Pop-ups and my first Basketball set. Of course we all were most appreciative of the great meal provided by you and your namesake at Mother Hubbards. Many thanks Steve.Your generosity in all things is legendary in OBC. Speaking of the Wizard, KEN MORGANTI, who bestows upon me a 49 Bowman, Ted Gray and a gerbilized Mantle form I forget what year? Thanks is insufficient for all you do for and on behalf of OBC. My apologies to other OBCers who I'm sure provided me with cardboard (Mike Rich being one) that I did not write down. I can thank MIKE RICH for some premium floor space and companionship. Thanks for the great selection Randy !! Peter Mead sends over a 56 White back variation that is a real treat. Now, to truely enjoy this story, you have to take out your card #18 and have it in your hands as you continue to read. I can picture it now, little Joey Foits sitting in his elementary class with his new 56 Topps Dick Donovan card, trying his best to make it through class time until recess starts. Whilts enduring a long hard day in the classroom, his mind starts to wander and he thinks back on his first outing as a pitcher, probably the day before. He updates the front of the card by scratching out Dick's name and neatly writing "Foits, Joey" just above it in the white border. Flips the card over and starts doodling on the back, coloring in the vapor trail left by the pitched ball in the cartoon and blackening the large "A" that beings the cartoon text. The pitcher has an era of 6.00 now, according to his newly listed stat in the middle of the card. Little Joey decides that this is going to be his personal trading card by changing all the stats to match his performance the day before. 1 Game, 3 Innings, 1 Win, 0 Losses, 1.000 PCT, 7 Hits, 4 Runs, 0 E.R., 5 K, 0 Walks and a 4.00 ERA (?). I now believe that this must have been done during math class as the ERA could be wrong, but I would never think of telling little Joey. I can just see the big smile on his face as he admires his handy work and shows off his new personalized trading card.
