Ray Luurs gave me a 69 Deckle of my HOMer and a 55 Red Man Carrasqual with tab; Ken Morganti put together a DS package of Topps BSKB for me; Steve gave me a starter set of Action Pack BSKB, a 1939 Playball #108; a set killer I think with a Gray Back Globetrotter card and most of a 1936 OPC HCKY Chabot! A 20 minute rain delay helped cool things down, as the home team won. I was able to see a small part of Ken's collection before he had to go to work after the game. Ken, finally put away the T-205 Polar Bear backs I had packaged up for him in May, and gave to him at the National. He swapped out the non-Polar Bears. Gave me the one I needed and a another, plus a DS of a HOFer. On Tuesday afternoon I arrived, via car ferry, on Long Island. Kevin Martens was waiting at the dock to lead me to his home. That evening we went to Shea ( my first trip) and we scalped tickets (for those of you that have heard my scalping horror stories, this went off without a hitch as we got box seat tickets for $50 each, with a face value of $62.50 ea. I am use to our form tickets in Detroit, 20 rows behind the plate, with a $30 face value. Talk about sticker shock). A few rain drops did not diminish the evening. Kevin took off work on Wednesday and showed me the town, followed by a swap session. I walked away with 10 hits to my Parkhurst hockey list, an upgrade and a variation. That is more progress than my last 2 Toronto shows combined I think. Finally drops me below the 200 mark. I also got a 1936 Canadian Goudey BB card for that fledgling set. Yesterday I arrived in Bethlem, PA and Rick Svetecz. For the OBCers who have been to my house, which is overrun with sports stuff, it is nothing compared to Rick's displys of Johnny Callison, the Phillies and even some Johnny Bench material. Amazing. I arrived Thursday nite and, after getting a preliminary tourm of the Phillie Museum, we walked into town for dinner and had a chance to see what they call the Star of Bethlehem on the mountain nearby. Friday, I went to Valley Forge, and in th eevening had a chance to do a swap with Rick. Swap is the wrong word as I had virtually nothing for Rick and I was able to grab some hits, including a pair of sp 1967 high numbers. Additionally, Rick gave me a set that i have seen before, but never got, the 1986 Sports Design All Time Tigers. This is a really well done set and includes my HOMer, Willie Horton. Saturday, we planned on going to the Phillies game, via way of a card show and then some site seeing in Philly. Naturally we saw a card shop on the way to the show (Rick did not know this card shop, but my sniffer found it). Not much there, but we did get some coins, including a 1964 Causey, that I think is the variation (quite rusty and hard to read). The card show had a few tables selling vintage cards, but the prices were quite high, especially when condition should have been considered. I was able to get a couple of short stacks of 1960 Nu- Card Highlites, doubling my collection from 10 to 20 cards (there are only 72 in the set, so I now have a good toe hold). Driving into Philly was similar to NYC traffic (worst then Boston). We finally got to the tourist area around 3:15. Enough time to see the Liberty Bell and some buildings around Constitution Hall (tickets were long gone for Constitution Hall). Then onto the game. So far the nicest park I have seen on my trip. We were able to get a pair of autographs (each) and a photo with Greg Luzinski who runs a BBQ concession at the park. The Phillies won and we took the 1 1/2 hour drive back to the house. Once there, Rick filled my car tires with air and then we went in and he allowed me to take a couple of Topps inserts I still needed of his HOMer Johnny Callison. To call him a HOMer is to so a dis-service to the way Rick worships Johnny. There is literally a Johnny Shrine a the house. Photos of Rick and Johnny and almost every piece ever made with Johnny on it is well displayed. Rick found the inserts (63 Stick-on without instructions and 65 Transfer) in the Johnny box. A wooden tool box like box filled with Johnny. This is seperate from the 700 dupe 1964 Topps Giants Rick has of Johnny. Absolutely incredible. The real star(s) of Bethlehem, Rick & Deb. Last note: On TV (Rick is a traffic reporter currently) he is known as Rick Edwards. Thanks Gersh, that card will have a place of honor in my '44 collection! -Dave Fallen ================= To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Mon, 22 Aug 2005 16:38:37 +0000 From: hoot-owl@comcast.net Subject: some OBC fun Gersh continues to steamroll a few wantlists--this time he hits my only listed OPC list with about 30 cards. It's beautiful. It arrived just in time for me to show it off to my visiting OBC pal, Mike Rich! Mike arrived on a Thursday evening just in time for a stroll through our little town of Bethlehem. He took a solo day trip to Valley Forge on Friday and never got lost...as far as we know. Saturday was big. We hit a card shop, a card show, and Steve & Barry's....where everything in the store is $7.98. Mike filled up a shopping cart with jeans for himself and winter coats for the nephews. That's right, winter coats for $7.98!! Then it was off to Philly for a quick gaze at Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell before taking in a Phillies game. We had a nice view from the terrace at Citizen's Bank Park for the Fightin' Phils triumph over the Pirates. Brett Myers pitched a complete game, too. Deb, Mike and I also got to see a misuse of equipment call against the catcher which yielded a free base to Jason Michaels. It was a first for me and Mike....I don't think Deb really cared too much. On Sunday we sent Mike on his way to Washington DC for more OBC adventures. Mike was good company. I kinda felt like I've known him a long time. Must be an OBC thing. He also left some goodies here....a complete TCMA All-Time Phillies set.....a few O-Pee-Chee Phillies (Cookie Rojas, Tony Taylor and a couple of Johnnys)....a few baseball scheds....AND an autographed OBC trading card of Mike "Motor Mouth" Rich! Oh yeah...Mike also picked up a 1989 coin of Capt Kirk as a Dodger for me......and was the quick thinker to get some mini-bats for Greg Luzinski to sign at the ballpark. Great stuff! Great guy!! Thank you Mike. Thank you Gersh. Thank you OBC!! Hello All, The past three weeks have been filled with family, service work and the excitement of a new school year. I have had little time to devote to my hobby, and it was all I could do to keep abreast of the many fine posts over the past few weeks over this medium. I have a number of things to thank members for that I have received in the past weeks, I do hope you will forgive my very belated platitudes. First to the many fine collectors who continue to email me even those those email messages go unanswered for weeks at a time. For your continued patience and perseverance with me I am very grateful. Much of my time these past weeks were spent coordinating our efforts at our annual Church Family Camp. I volunteered my services as Camp Coordinator and "she who must be obeyed" (my wife Donna) acted as Director of Camp Activities. To say the least orchestrating a seven day event for upwards of 150 campers a day can be a daunting task, but the Lord shined upon us and all went well despite our efforts to muck it all up. I have been involved with Family Camp in various capacities for 35 years now and it was fulfilling to give back in service that which has been given to me many times over all these years. When we returned I had two days to prepare for the start of a new school year (We received student last Wednesday for the first day of school). So from on kind of service to another it has be very busy in Southeastern Michigan, nonetheless many fine collectors found the time to share with me many items for my collection. So after a long prologue I would like to thank: Chef Anthony Arbeeny allows me to claim a `78 Topps Baseball wax wrapper. I am just beginning to collect the wax wrappers for my vintage collection and Ant gets me off to a good start. Dziekuje bardzo!!! Andy Cook adds a SCP to my `33 Goudey set with the Cardinals Ethan Allen. I do not get many pre-war cards in the mail (don't have many to trade as I only have T-218's in my dupe box) so it is always cause for celebration when one arrives. Thanks so much Andy!!! Grazie!!! Larry Gersbach adds me to his tour of flying cardboard with a reoccuring theme in a SCP of Frank Hogan from the `33 Goudey set. Two pre-war cards from trading buddies back to back, this is too much Larry. Muchas gracias!!! Gary Mandell makes his presence known by sending along a `93 Conlan of Bill Terry and a couple of `61 Topps Football cards featuring Art Hunter and Jim Patton. Merci beaucoups!!! Finally, my (5) year anniversary in OBC has just past and in that time I often heard about but never experienced the generosity of one collector who continues to be a mystery. Well all that has changed as STAN HACK has resurfaced with a Honolulu postmark (must be on vacation) and has sent me a SCP of Don Newcombe from the `50 Bowman set. A great OBC specimen that brings me to say "Thanks STAN HACK - Who ever you are"!!! With so many wonderful collectors sending some many fabulous additions to my collection - I am truly humbled. I have been "out of the loop" and will do my best in the coming days to make a "comeback" and get the proper pay-back and greeting out in the mail. To all - BE WELL!!! REGARDS ------------------- MARK ================= To: "OBC" Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2005 05:00:08 -0500 From: "Shawn Adkins" Subject: Catching Up a bit I find myself getting a bit behind again the last couple of weeks as my wife has decided to start a home daycare. Lots of little projects and a few big ones too remain to get things ready for the various inspections and state requirements for running a licensed daycare. This is something she's wanted to do for the last 5 years and I'm happy to say that we're now able to give it at try. With that said, my "personal card time" has been and will continue to be rather limited as we finish making preparations for the little ones and try to get her business on it's feet. I appreciate your continued patience with me during the next few weeks. Some great packages have arrived at my doorstep Monday and Tuesday, with Thanks extended to: Kevin Martens hits me in a big way with a 57 mid series Darrell Johnson and another hit for the kids collection !
