With a subject title like that, I had better make this one interesting... Yesterday a surprise 400-ct. box shows up on my doorstep from BOB PIGEON. Most of the stuff inside was post-1980 (but only by 1-4 years) and filled in the gap with some 60s gems. My 1963-'65 wantlists are quite large, so Bob knocks a few cards off each one. A '61 card showing the '60 NL ERA leaders (with Drysdale) and '69 models of Cepeda and Niekro highlight the 21 cards from that part of the package. Two 1980 team cards also join the trip. From the remainder of the package, I can't say what sets they come from on this server. But I can say that the 300+ cards did a great job of imploding some of those latter-day lists. Included in those sets are guys like Carlton, Rose, Bench, Reggie, Palmer, Pops Stargell and Bosox fans' sentimental favorite Bucky Or is that Bucky (expletive deleted) Dent? Oh yeah...the subject line...there were two Mark Fydrich cards in the package as well. So, Bob Pigeon flipped me a couple of "Birds." While wading through the tables, I met a couple more OBCers for the first time, and one had a gift for me: MIKE WIERZBICKI stopped by long enough to hand off a small envelope filled with 20 hits to a set that misses our cutoff here by one year. But it's just as Also, KEN MORGANTI gets hero status conferred upon him. At the beginning of the show, I said that if I could find a cheap Schmidt RC, I'd knock out the rest of my 1973 set. Ken found one for $15, and the same seller had all but one of the remaining cards. Within 5 minutes, Ken had located Johnny Callison to put the set to bed. Finally, I have to share the deal I found at one of the tables...RON PERRY was flipping through a box of mid-50s cards and asked if I'd look through them as well. The seller told us he'd let us have them ALL for 35 cents a card. We split that lot in a big hurry (and I now have plenty of dupes for the Swap session!) Not easy to explain my troubles but it is primarily due to the fact that I have been without my PC for almost 3 months. Since May 1st to be exact because I can remember it was the day I was finally able to accept one of Mike Rich's invitation to a chat session. It was Monday morning here and normally I would be at work, but that day is Philippine Labor Day and a national holiday here same as ours. During the chat my PC started acting a little strange and maybe it was a jinx or something. About 2 hours later it completely shutdown after many Windows errors and statements saying my BIOS was no longer compatible with my operating system. So off to the shop it went. Motherboard problems required a new one. No problem, needed a memory upgrade anyway since I was only running 256MB of RAM to begin with. However, the shop said they would have to reformat the HD to reinstall XP. Lengthy conversation ensued to ensure none of my files or information would be lost because I didn't have them backed up (yeah, I know). OK, go ahead. They would backup everything to another drive and then reinstall after the new XP was in. Took the PC home a couple of days later and as you might have guessed, I obviously survived the almost "big one" I had when I turned it on and discovered absolutely nothing was left. Who says grown men don't cry. Well for the past 3 months they have had someone outside their company using sophisticated (that's what they told me) software to recover my files. The process was finally completed yesterday but not too much success. Perhaps only 10% and not that important. Lost all my emails, address book, bookmarks, business and personal files of significance, photos, etc. Big lesson learned on backing things up now. It's turned out to be very expensive on another front because I have been trying to become an internet marketer for the past 9 months and it's in the toilet now and have to rebuild everything. Except my credit card is maxed out now and no money to get it going again. Which has led to another really terrible decision. I'm looking for a real job abroad again. Not something I am very happy about at all given that I've been through that before and it's a lot of sacrifice leaving the family. But I am basically broke and don't have much of a choice. Don't have much of a shot at a new career either at my age and not having any meaningful skills any longer. And I ain't asking for a handout, but you guys are a network opportunity. I can send a resume to anyone who might be in a position to assist. I'm not asking for the world. Just about anything over minimum wage that doesn't require any special skills would work. I'm good with people I've been told, very reliable, maybe not the sharpest tack in the box, but not stupid either. Conscientious and can think pretty well. Good health, not the best, don't drink or smoke. I've got a few of my own friends outside of OBC who used to live here and now live in Vegas that say the hotel security business is a pretty good place to find some employment and they are looking for me. Vegas would be nice for a couple of other reasons also :>) Anyway, I know I have missed a lot. About the only thing I have been able to do is use a friend's PC to keep up with my internet banking and my Yahoo Fantasy baseball team who have really been stinking up the place lately. When it goes bad, it all goes bad. I do have some long, long overdue thanks that I kept the notes on and my deepest apologies to these fine OBCer's for their contributions so many, many moons ago. Mark Talbot has sent me wonderful books in the past about Hank. But the most recent item is a remarkable VHS tape on him which I have enjoyed tremendously. Including the special program which is fabulous. Then he followed that up with a thoughtful homemade birthday card that had some additional cards for the Hank collection. As with the others Mark, I am truly sorry for this late Thanks, but they did make it and I am very, very appreciative again. The aforementioned and always generous Mike Rich also added another card to the Hank collection. Thanks to you as well Mike. Robert Pigeon sent me a Hank card that he obtained in a rather unique way. He took it in trade for a service call he made. The significance of this is that the card appears to have a genuine autograph of Hank!!! Wowza Robert, thanks a trillion!! Dan Angland also hits me during my hiatus with another addition to the Hank collection. Thanks Danno for the thought. And finally, Doug Smith hits the vintage list and makes the 51 Redback list a little shorter. I hope things are going better for him now and I know we support him in his recovery. Well thanks again to all and sorry for not being in touch for so long.
