With the Tigers taking on Texas it was tailor made for a terrific night of baseball, cards & fellowship. So let's begin thanking the participants. Thanks to Earl Kilbourn for picking up Andy in downtown Detroit and bring him to our local Wednesday show. Earl does not do a great deal of driving in Detroit as he lives about an hour north so this was especially noteworthy. Ron Perry made his way down from Midland, Mike Rich joined us from his office in Troy and I was the last to arrive at about 6:10 p.m. for no particular good reason. Thanks to Ron for enduring the hour and 45 minute jaunt as he came the furthest to welcome Andy. Somewhere along the way EEK handed me a package with 16 assorted "retro" vintage cards from the 2001 Topps Archive set. I just added this set to my list and it was great to get names like Kiner, Garagiola, Seaver, Yaz, Brooks Roby, Taint and Fingers. Thanks for the first "hits" to this list Earl. Mike Rich provided the tickets for the game, 20 rows back directly behind home plate, it's a wonderful location to enjoy a game from. So a big thank you to Mike for these great tickets. The game was quite enjoyable with the home-town heroes taking down the Rangers 6-4. Some monster HR's in the game and some great major league plays. Following the game Mike and I escorted Andy back to his room and enjoyed a little mini swap. Thanks to Andy for my first Nabisco Team Flakes card of Jim Fregosi, a `62 Post Canadian card of Ernie Broglio, a `52 Topps Black Back variation of Leo Kiely, a `71 Milk Duds box with Roy White, (2) Exhibit cards featuring Joe Adcock and Minnie Minoso and a Diamond Kings card of Fritz Ostermueller. Andy also allowed me to snag a small stack of (18) Star Wars cards from the late `70's - I have some somewhere and this will force me to find them and see what I need. Great to see you Andy and thanks for the cardboard. As usual, when Mike and I get together there's always an exchange of cardboard so Mike handed me a 2005 OBC PTC of himself - special "dumpster treasures" version. There is sure to be more on this special edition in posts to come. Mike slipped me my "real" Toronto haul tonight with a `62 Post Canadian of Drysdale, a `65 OPC Tovar RC, (2) `66 OPC team cards, (5) `67 OC's with Hoerner, Davalillo, Scott, Nash and Lewis, a `68 OPC card of Rojas, (9) `69 OPC cards with AL Batting & NL RBI leaders, Powell, Banks, Taylor, Ferraro, Aguirre, WS game 6 and Pavletich, (5) `74 OPC Team Checklists w/the Padres, Cards, Mets, Twins and TIGERS!!! I always do so well at the Toronto show, who knows - maybe one day I will actually accompany Mike there. Thanks Mike for organizing the effort tonight, the tickets, the cardboard, the transportation and most of all your company. It was a great night at the park, perfect weather and great friends. Lots of laughter, cheering, conversation and some "Rich" thoughts. Thanks to Mike, Andy, Earl and Ron for making it a memorable evening. BE WELL!!! Actually, I still have some thanks to acknowledge from Vegas (although yesterday was my first day off from work since I got back.) I'd like to thank V05 host Mike Hair for his tireless work hosting the eVents for the past ten years, for cooking up ribs that always made it worth the 2700 mile trip, and this year for personally escorting me out of the city Well, truthfully he helped me check out of my hotel with a stop at the local Target to pick up some additional luggage - which I needed to haul all the auction donations (mostly from him) back home. Although it isn't close to being enough - THANKS MIKE!! Peter Iversen handed me an envelope at Ribfest with an SCP Doolan for my T205 Polar Bear list. This will fit in nicely with my set. THANKS PETER!! Geordie Calvert chauffeured me around town most of the week and paid for lunch (and dessert) at Hooters. As if that wasn't enough, today I got a letter in the mail from him (which sorta guilted me into writing all this, so blame him ) Two 70 Kellogg's cards by the names of Sutton and McCovey. Awesome! THANKS GEORDIE!! Todd Knowles picked up the tab at the traditional Excuse Breakfast, even though my 'doctor' sent a note offering to do the same (but more as a bribe for strokes for my team) Now that I think of it, Todd was on my team and we STILL didn't get any strokes. Tough committee. THANKS TODD!! Also at Ribfest, Josh Levine showed off his card shop purchase of Red Man cards and then passed over four on my list including two Klu's and the last '54 AL'er on my list. THANKS JOSH!! Joe Cerullo (although he should probably be thanking me for knocking him off the poker table and forcing him to the slots where he won over a grand) picked up the tickets (and their cost) for the 51's baseball game. Even though the game was long, it was worth the wait for the fireworks afterwards, which I really enjoyed. Joe also helped the golf team into the winne's circle (a first for me) with his now patented five wood chip shot on 18. THANKS JOE!! Thanks should go to Mike Diamante for adding some coffee to my V05 gift bag and providing a 58 Bunning as a prize during the team drawing. Since I already have one, this will go towards the John Ball auction (which will hopefully be starting next week if I can get everything scanned). THANKS MIKE!! I know I've forgotten some things, but I guess what happened in Vegas will stay in Vegas for that reason. A special thanks for those not previously mentioned, just for showing up and sharing in the fun. It's meeting up with all of you that I'm really going to miss. THANKS EVERYONE!! While I was away (or shortly after I returned) Bob Neill sent an envelope with an SCP hit in the form of a '61 Post Jim Gilliam. Been a while since anyone's been able to hit that short list - and there aren't a lot of potential hits left now. THANKS BOB!! I think that clears my IOU list. Sorry if I forgot to mention something. If my forgetfulness bothers you or if you just want to see if something you sent arrived safely, please remind me. I did pick up a few auction donations over the last couple weeks that I haven't acknowledged, but who sent what gets lost in the sorting out part of the project. If you don't see what you sent up on eBay, don't hesitate to get in touch with me... although I don't know what I'll be able to do at that point other than ringing the neck of the postmaster While I'm on the subject of eBay, I registered for the upcoming Sotheby's live auction on June 10th (although I probably don't have a prayer of winning anything). I put in a couple absentee bids - one on a complete 1948-49 Leaf set (because you know I need TWO of those ) and the other a lot with a pair of 52 Topps cards - Mays (GAI 4.5 VG-EX) and Mantle (GAI 2 GOOD). So, today I get an e-mail from some eBay member claiming that the $1500 min. bid is too much for those cards and I should retract my bid... oh yeah, and he/she also has a PSA 5 Mays for sale and needs $700 more for their $1900 transmission problems. How many things are wrong with this? I should do the right thing and report them to eBay for soliciting sales, but I won't because I think they're clueless. Even if I won the lot, the Mays is going right on eBay again, because guess which card is the one I need? I should have mentioned in my reply that I am an Industry Expert, so I know about these things ;-) Well, the softball team I'm on finally won a game - three in a row actually before falling last night. Originally, I thought we'd go winless on the season after losing via the mercy rule in 4 of the first 5 games (with the other defeat by 11 runs - the slaughter rule is a 12 run lead after 5 innings in this league). I guess it took me going on a trip to get things going (although I barely play - there's just not a big need for a left-handed shortstop I guess. Stupid traditionalists.) Anyhow, I'll let you all get back to something more productive now. (Yesterday was my son Joe's 12th birthday and there are guys in this group who might remember an AOL chat session featuring Little Joey, 2 years old, throwing a 1966 Sandy Koufax and a 1968 Don Drysdale down the stairs from my 3rd floor office in my old house in the city of Poughkeepsie.) Mark Talbot sent a trio of very nice Posties, while Chuck Paris contributes an ominous Evil Empire card from the Topps 1975 Mini set - a photo of a group of players wearing pinstripes, some grinning as if to say "Sox will get crushed by the Big Red Machine due to The Curse of the Bambino which hasn't even been invented yet." More recently, I had the pleasure of hearing from Bob Neill, the man the myth the Wheaties box collecting legend, who gave me three very tough cards from the toughest of Kellogg's sets, 1971, featuring Frank "Capital Punishment" Howard, Tony Taylor, and one of my all-time favorite players, Jim Northrup. Seems that the Tiger centerfielder-cum-shortstop had a knack for hitting grand slams, including one in the sixth game of the 1968 World Series in support of "The Maestro" Denny McLain, which I heard on transistor radio smuggled into my sixth grade classroom. And Bama knocked one out of the park with a stunning R-314 Goudey Premium of Rick Ferrell, an uncommon horizontal pose among the really beautiful wide-pen autographed sepia-toned photo cards of that set. He's holding up his classic manhole-cover catcher's mitt, with "Boston" across his vintage uniform shirt. While I need that one for my set, I am looking into maybe having it framed, because it's such a beautiful photo. Here's why it's important not to be like me (you can use me for a bad example) and thank those guys in OBC for the really nice, thoughtful cards that are sent. Sometimes you'll find if you wait, it becomes harder to get a message of thanks through. I really like the Taylor Douthit card from the 1933 Goudey set, because it shows a Jack Armstrong-type all-American boy following through from his batting swing, and the whole card just looks like a classic piece of American folk art from a time long gone by. So this is a very belated, and very appreciative, note of thanks to Trader Doug Smith. ================= Date: Sat, 11 Jun 2005 00:30:18 EDT To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: JEdward@aol.com Subject: This Week in Baseball Cards I think I've been working on the 1968 Topps set since forever, and of course, the fewer I need the harder it gets. My opologies to my fellow FOOTs and our recent guest of honor. As you will recall, many moons ago the more responsibly prompt members of the Michigan contingent of OBC posted thanks and filed their reports on Andy Cook's visit to Tiger Town. In an effort to partially atone for my inexcusable tardiness I offer the following rambling thanks. First a thanks to Mike Rich who provided the tickets to the Tiger's game and coordinated the welcome back Andy gathering. In an even greater gesture Mike actually accepted my offer to pick up and deliver Andy to the Wednesday evening card show at the Elk's. I think that my successful completion of the correspondence course via Big Al's School of Travel & Navigation had much to do with his decision. I am happy to say, Mike's leap of faith was not unfounded. I made the trek from Grand Blanc to Detroit arriving at Andy's hotel at the designated time without a hitch. Our timing was excellent as Andy was optimistically waiting for me outside on my second lap around the Ren Cen. Even more astounding was our expeditious and safe trip back to the Elk's. Well, there was that time that I took both hands of the steering wheel and started to drift a bit, but Andy must take some responsibility for that. A lesson to future OBCers visiting our fair State: do not ask a Michiganian the location of Michigan cities and towns while we are driving. When Andy informed me that he had a relative who lived somewhere in the Thumb of Michigan, I was compelled to point out the location of the town he mentioned. I immediately and instinctively raised my right hand and used my left hand to point out the exact location. Given that most of us here are bi-handed I had none left to steer my vehicle. Fortunately we where on a straight stretch of the freeway at the time. Once at the Elk's, Andy and I meandered around the tables that seemed to be mostly non sports and or uv stuff. We did find a few tables with some older stuff and both made a few purchases. As is the tradition at our gatherings, the closest will be last and the furthest shall be first. Of course Andy, living in another State was the first to arrive at our rendezvous, with yours truly getting an assist. The next to arrive was Ron Perry, a Bay City resident and the next furthest away. For the more curious of OBCers, raise your right hand and point to the space between your index finger and your thumb, that is the general location of Bay City. At any rate, to my knowledge, Mark Talbot and Mike Rich, the most local guys, arrived almost simultaneously. Since we wanted to get to Comerica Park before the seventh inning stretch, we drug Mike out after just one quick purchase. No sooner did we get to the parking lot and a flurry of cardboard commenced flying, some of which flew in my direction. Then off to the Ball Park were we with the brave and adventurous Andy & Ron riding with me. Our trip was uneventful with the exception of when Ron urged me to make a "sharp left" pointed right, and I continued straight. With a slight detour we were back on course. Once at the Park, Mike led us to our seats behind home plate and we settled in for a great night of baseball. As previously reported, it was a well played & exciting game with the exception that both team's pitchers kept intercepting the third basemans balls. The fact that the Tigers earned a well deserved come from behind victory made it even better and of course there is the always insightful "Rich thoughts". After the game Ron and I decided to call it a night as Mike, Mark and Andy headed back to Andy's hotel for a late night card swap. Now to the thanks as I rememberer them: MIKE RICH for a 82 Squirt of Tiger's skipper Alan Trammell, a Pistons pin- button & some Tiger OPC's that are I think dealer scum from his recent trip to Canada. Mike, what do I owe you for these hard to find gems? Mark Talbot hits me with 14 58T's & I think it was he who handed me a Detroit News publication featuring the Tiger's 84 World Championship season and a couple posters. These could have been from Mike, I'm not sure, but unless & until I'm corrected, I'm giving Mark the credit. Whoever it was, one of the posters was of the UHL Motor City Mechanics Hockey Team with locked out Red Wings Chris Chelios & Derian Hatcher. Speaking of Hockey, Andy pulled off a hat trick, depositing in my OBC cap a slew of Topps from 58, 63 & 67. In addition I discovered a 61 Post of Stormin' Norman Cash, a 56T Billy Hoeft & 19 Kelloggs cards. I'm sure my cap was on the backseat of my vehicle at the time and not on my head or I'm sure I would have noticed sooner. I hope I gave the right person credit for the right cards, if not I offer my apologies & a promise to do better next time! One thanks I know is right goes to Mike, Mark, Ron & our guest of honor Andy for a great evening of companionship, cards, Comerica, and a bit of crazy chaos of the comic variety. Buford had led the O's the year before in hitting and started the series off right by hitting Tom Seaver's second pitch of the game into the stands. Alas, that was about it for the Birds, as Buford went 1 for his next 19 and the Mets took Baltimore 4 games to 1. Thanks for thinking of me, Ken!
