I've already expressed my thoughts and feelings on Doug's and OUR situation. After reading the response to Doug's letter I felt compelled to weigh in on the issue of how the OBCAC will respond. As many have already indicated, I too will accept whatever the OBCAC decides and I appreciate that we have a voice, rather public or private, in this matter. With few exceptions, the public response via Ramblings have deepened my appreciation for this group. I am and will continue to take pride in being a member of OBC regardless of what is decided. As I was checking out Doug's wantlist this morning, I got to thinking (unchartered territory here) what does "Inactive Status" mean? In checking the members list I noted that some inactive members still have their wantlists available and some do not. It seems that the level of inactivity is based upon the preference of the individual. That led me to another question. Is "Inactive" simply a voluntary status on the part of the member? Which begs yet another question: in the history of OBC has anyone been inactivated or for that matter expelled by the OBCAC? If not, this will be a precedent setting situation. Once this door is opened there is no turning back. As a family we will be defined by the decision of the OBCAC. If we are truly a family, it is my opinion that each of us should be allowed to determine our relationship with another family member. If someone decides to "disown" a family member they can cross his/her name off their copy of the member list. If they decide not to trade with or send cards to a member that is their prerogative. They do not however, have the right to decide for the rest of us. I said all that to say this. It is my humble opinion that sometimes the appropriate thing for a governing body to do is nothing. I wish to use my voice to say that I believe that this is one of those times! We keep what we give away! ================= Date: Wed, 6 Apr 2005 15:35:51 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC Thanks From: Terry Dietrick Subject: Thanks Fuge! Astute collectors had him pegged as the next predecessor to Nolan Ryan and were bidding them up accordingly! John has already given his report, so I'll just fill in some blanks. John was right that only one dealer commented on the hats(or in my case hat and shirt) was Bill H. The show itself was nice, small Saturday turnout, so it made it comfortable to browse. I think John and I both made a nice killing in the 4 or so hours we were there. Put a hurtin' on the '71 set and the 60 set, being able to hit a couple of star cards at OBC type deals. Also finished off 1 of the 2 UV sets that I collect and getting the other down to 1 card! John also hit me with a six pack of blue boarder team cards from 1973 in beautiful condition. Thanks John! My son,Adam, is getting away from the UV crap a little more and picking up more vintage, mostly Pirates, but vintage none the less. Makes a Dad proud! Pirate game was a little slow moving. Maybe because we were tired. And my Buccos lost to the Cubbies 4-3 on former Pirate Aramis Ramirez 3 run homer. Pirate couldn't afford him when he finally developed into a good hitter, but the larger payroll clubs can.WHEN WILL IT ALL STOP!!!!!!! All in all, a good day. Meeting John and his kids was wonderful. John is a very pleasant guy and his kids were very well behaved. Really enjoyed his company. Thanks John. Maybe we can get a few guys together and take in an Injun's game this summer? Then as travelers Dan sends (293) `70 OPC cards for the dupe box - now some guys are obviously going to get HIT by these. Mike Rich passed along tickets to the Tiger game on Thursday that I was attending with a friend from High School. I met up with Mike at his office and as I sat opposite his desk I got the strange feeling I was looking at his dining room table. Let's see, stuff all over, piles of stuff everywhere, boxes strewn about - but wait - there was no cardboard just title papers here there and everywhere. To say the least - Mike's office is very homey (at least by Mike standards) and proof of a consistent lifestyle. Enough digs at my pal Mike, down to his car we go and he hands off cardboard pleasures to go along with the tickets; a couple of `72 Kelloggs (Cuellar & Robinson), a `75 Kelloggs of Ralph Garr, (2) `68 Atlantic Oils (Chance & Fregosi) and (5) `71-72 Topps Hockey cards (Harris, McKenny, Connelly, Hextall and Cashman). As always a nice visit albeit short, thanks again Mike!!! John Leroux sends a couple more `73 Fleer Wildest Plays cards, these are so cool. As you know, I love the "oddball" sets and these mid `70's Fleer sets are among my favorites. They have interesting facts and stories about the game we all love. These cards are much appreciated John. Finally, continuing the "Never-ending" trade, Peter Mead (who recently stopped over in Detroit and we spent some time together) sends a `54 Bowman FB card of Emlen Tunnell, a `55 Bowman FB card of Ed Lebaron, a `62 Topps FB card of the Giants team, a `63 Topps FB card of Willie Wood, a `67 Topps FB card of Tom Nomina, (30) `72-73 Topps Hockey cards, (11) `73-74 Topps Hockey cards, and (4) `74-75 Topps Hockey cards. Among the Hockey cards were names like Dave Keon, Red Wingers Henry Boucha and Bill Collins, as well as some Team and Leader cards. So I am "tagged" again by Peter and I look forward to seeing what I might have for him. A great deal can happen in a few days, and with trading friends like those in OBC the mail can pile up. Years ago I got in the habit of reading the forwards, preludes, thanks, etc. parts of books and booklets. I am almost always rewarded with some kind of interesting bits and it turns out the author of this fabulous work, states that he, as a newspaper columnist, invented, "the 'hark back' column, the one, you know, which chronicles in today's paper events that occurred on the corresponding date 10, 20, 30, or any number of years ago. It was always an extremely popular feature, but of a character that could not be copyrighted, alas." Author is A. H. Tarvin, copyright 1938. In this booklet forward he says that he was always a baseball devotee and began 45 years earlier (1893 by my reckoning) to collect newspaper clippings of the odd and unusual in baseball. Here are just a few of the titles: A Buck Ewing Innovation; Catcher Clarke's record; First basewoman, Lizzie Murphy; Home Run ended Pinochle Game, etc. I will savor and slowly read each one. Steve also sends two pristine cigar bands - Thomas Edison and one of Cheyenne Indian Dull Knife. Steve, how do you do it? I thought I had handled a lot of stuff by going to antique stores, flea markets, etc. I actually used to collect cigar artwork and lithographs but....ah, that's another story and this is Thanks, not Ramblings. Oh, and Steve included a Bowman FB card of Crazy Legs Hirsch. What a wonderful variety - Thanks Steve! No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
