Philosophical sports question: How can you hold a college tournament basketball game in an arena that holds 20,000+, when the weather is clear, have 789 fans in attendance, and call it a sellout? Philosophical sports answer: When it is the CIAA tournament (Div II) and you only sell tickets as a package deal, and you're playing the first round of the woman's half of the tournament. Yep, that's right, they called the game a sellout because all 20,000+ tickets were sold, and they had 789 fans in the stands. I also recovered (3) `69 Milton Bradley Tiger cards (Brinkman, Horton and Wert), a SCP Tiger from `76 OPC and a couple of `68 Topps Baseball game upgrades with Kaline and Freehan. Excellent stuff John!!! Finally, Andy Cook kept sliding stuff at me to see if I needed it - I received a couple `50 Bowman cards (Houtteman and Wood), a `72 Kellogg's of Mel Stottlemyre, a`60 Leaf of Bennie Daniels, (3) Nu-Card Scoops, a `62 Post Canadian, a `62 Post Football card, (4) `66 Topps rub-offs and (7) MLPA cut out stamps which I am beginning to accumulate. Andy also insisted that I grab up 150+ assorted `70 Topps and Kellogg's Baseball and assorted `78 Topps football for the dupe box. Cool stuff indeed!!! After bidding all a Good Evening I made it to my office where I found a flat from Ray Luurs. Just when I thought the evening couldn't get any better Ray sends out a SCP from the `62 Topps set. Just some nobody outfielder named Yastrzemski. I am floored Ray - Thanks so much!!!! I had a great evening, plenty of cardboard, stories and simply great commradarie. I enjoyed showing off some of my collection goodies and letting the guys plow through my dupes. Thanks you Mike, John, Earl and Andy - If any other collecting friends are in the neighborhood be certain to let us know as the FOOT is getting pretty good at this Midwestern Hospitality thing and we would love to share it with you. I was the last to arrive at the restaurant, but as I walked in there was the unmistakebale sound of OBCers arguing/discussing cards, sports, life, beer, etc. We pigged out (I had ribs, Mark had pulled pork, Eek had ribs, catfish and Hush puppies, so you get the idea) and then headed over to Mark's a few blocks away. Surprisingly Kendall (Mark's animal card collecting daughter) stayed away and we made out way to the basement where Mark's cards are stored (although he did not take the group out to the garage as promised to see the 500,000 UV cards in the rafters). cards were a flying as is the custom at such an OBC event. Mark sent a pair of 1970 OPC BB upgrades and a T-218 billiard portrait my way. Eek sent a small stack of UV, including retro cards my way. After wading through those, there was a bunch of 1974 Topps stamps, including guys such as Parker rookie, Carlton, Munson, Bench, Morgana dn F. Robby. John McLaughlin had some boxes that my radar honed in on. Including getting a bunch of UV Tigers (remember this was a FOOT gathering after all) I found a 1934 Batter Up high numebr Tiger, a 1978 TCMA 60s Maris, and a great upgrade to my 68 Topps set, Tom Seaver. Knowing Andy was coming to town, I asked him if I could swap my prewar dupes for some of his prewar dupes that I needed. I only had 2 that he needed. Well not only did he just give/swap me a bunch of unbelieveable cards, he did not even take all of my prewar dupes. I still need to figure out what some of teh cards were, but here is a partial list: 2 63 Topps FB, my first 74 Topps Deckle Edge, 1/2 (or is that 2 1/4s) of a 1930s 4 in 1 Exhibit card, 3 Kahns, I think from 1968, 3 1934 french version canadian Goudeys, my first Rodeo Meat card, a Diamond Star (getting close to 1/2 this set)and doubled my 41 Goudeys with 2 hits. Others still need to be Id'd. I also got to drive Andy back to his hotel. Needless to say, I was speechless (I know no one believes that). What a great nite. Now if there is an oral history of Cuban or Latin American baseball, I could complete a world tour!! ================= To: tldietrick@yahoo.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Date: Thu, 31 Mar 2005 05:55:08 +0000 From: talbot1@comcast.net Subject: NCAA Victory spoils!!!
