The Rambling will show up eventually, but let me get the important stuff out to the rest of OBC: First of all -- thanks to KEN MORGANTI. While taking me up on my offer to let him stay in our guest room during Super Bowl week, he came down with some extra hits to my collection: 7 DS cards from '52 Topps including many semi hi #s, 4 blue-bordered '73 checklists, 5 red-bordered '74 checklists, a 72T In action card, a hit to the 1955 Topps set and 5 UV cards of Steeler HOFers. The '52 Topps cards are among the best in my collection, and thanks for all the help filling some of the holes in my collection. While on the Super Bowl topic, BRIAN LINDHOLME decided to "hit the host town list a bit" -- according to his letter -- and hits the '69 list five times while adding a '58T Clint Courtney card. ED SCHOTT sends along a couple of expected waiver wire cards, and all picture beloved players. From 1970, Belanger and Jim Perry; from 1971, Roy White and a '72 Billy Williams IA card. Thanks Mike! Steve Rittenberg stopped my place for a quick visit on his way back home after the recent RI show. He provided me with numerous hits via dealer scum, trades, and some freebies. Here is what I was able to cross off my lists. 13 Bowmans from 1951, a trimmed 53 and 54 Bowman, two 1960 Leafs, three Fleer World Series cards, 17 Hostess hits including Stargell, Eckersley, Fisk, Schmidt and Bench, a 51 Red Back, one 52, one 53, Berra and Stengel from 1959, an SP high number from 1961, two from 1962, and a trimmed 1954 Ted Williams knocking that list down to just two! And if that wasn’t enough he gets me started on a birth year football set with 29 cards from 1963, and also hands me three hits for the 1968 set including Blanda and a handful of the 4 in 1 stamps from 1969. And he brought a Pedro bobblehead for my son. Needless to say his dupe boxes were a little lighter for him to carry back to his car. Thanks for the cards and for stopping by Steve. Monday's mail had only one envelope...no bills, credit card offers or unsolicited advertising...but an SCP from SPIKE GLIDDEN! Spike sends along a wiver wire card from the 1948 "Babe Ruth Story" set. This card features the actors who played the Sylvester family. According to baseball legend (and the movie), Babe visited Johnny Sylvester in the hospital. The boy was near death and the doctors were doubtful he'd live long. So the Babe promised to hit a home run for the kid if he'd get better. He did and little Johnny's condition Now (with apologies to Paul Harvey)...for the REST of the story... In 1985 or '86 I read an article in "Baseball Digest" dealing with the legend. After nearly 20 years the details are hazy (perhaps someone here has the copy), but here's what I remember: Johnny Sylvester wasn't as close to death's door as the Hollywood scriptwriters had him (no surprise there), but he was a real kid and Ruth promised he'd hit a home run for him -- something he did many times for kids in the hospital. Sometime after the homer, a man came up and told Ruth he was Johnny Sylvester's father/uncle/relative, and he appreciated the Babe's help in lifting the boy's spirits. Ruth was cordial and asked the man how "little Johnny" was doing, and after a short chat the man left. Ruth reportedly turned to a sportswriter or teammate and asked, "Who in the hell is Johnny Sylvester?" So much for legend. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. It seems that Jeff had purchased the coin for Lynn only to hear a few days later that Lynn had received another copy of it. I am very pleased to have it Jeff - Thanks a (De)Lott. Finally, one of the Massachusetts contingency fires back from some `33 Goudey hits I laid on him at the National in Cleveland. Well worth the wait as "Spike" Glidden sends (4) hits to the `33 Goudey set with Grimes, English, Benge and McCurdy, a SCP from `34 Goudey in Pinkey Higgins and (2) Diamond Star cards featuring Blondy Ryan and Julius Solters. I am floored Spike - I don't know what to say but THANKS!!!! Many happy returns (so this pair better look out) - I hope all in the group are doing well and enjoying life. Paul Biggs sent along some nice hits to my 77, 79 & 80 sets while Ray Luurssends some hits to my newly started 64 set. By the way, since joining this group, I have been getting me in trouble at home. When I leave work, I always call my wife and ask her if I got any mail. She thinks that I should at least ask about her. Heck, I know what's in that package. Thanks guys! Hello All, Today I received a short stack of (4) `63 Post and (5) `62 Post Canadian cards from Brock Hattox. This was the good news as I was able to knock off quite a few on the old want list. I proceeded to start storing the cards away and then the bad news - it seems that I messed up recently and placed cards that were headed to my collection (keepers) and placed them in the dupe box. This has to be so because I was missing about a dozen cards from the collection and found 3 of them in the dupe box. The rest - well they are out in other collections because I have dispersed them about. So I have added another 10 or so cards to the `63 Post list if any of you are so inclined to look.
