JOEL FREEDMAN starts it off with a neat oddball... a 1963 Bazooka All Time Great of Chief Bender. If you haven't seen these cards, they are really nice looking early foil cards, the classic and classy grandfather to all the subsequent foil junk that has sullied the hobby since the early 90's. I really like this set. Thanks As for the second envelope, the spaceman has landed! RICH ROBINSON pitches in with a sharp example of Bill Lee (1978 Topps). Lee was clearly one of the wackiest dudes to ever lace them up, but he was nonetheless a very effective southpaw (that is until his fateful brawl with the Yankees where he screwed up his shoulder). He was never the same. Then again, he was never really right to begin with! Thanks, Rich! P.S. Like many of us, my expanding waistline bears testament to the poor collation in the bags of Helmar goodies. I got there before him hoping to find all of the good deals but he still found the best deal of the show. A nice gentleman had a binder full of cards from the 50’s he collected as a kid. He stuck them on his bedroom wall and left them there when he moved out. His parents redecorated the room and saved the cards for him and now 50+ years later he’s selling them. One of them was the #1 from the 1952 set Andy Pafko. Spike bought the card for $25 even though he didn’t need it. He offered it to me, [or did I beg for it ;-) ], and let me purchase it at his cost. Thanks for helping me knock off a tough one Spike! Also I need to apologize. I know I received a few other envelopes within the last couple of weeks. That is until the mailperson arrived and brought a counter attack in the form of two 9 1/2 x 4 envelopes filled with TLC. Via ground came the Minuteman DON RICE while the Air Attack was provided by our own Flying Ace GENO DON marches in with 5 Tigers from the 79 TCMA set, including Kuenn & House. With Care full aim he also hit my HOM/HOF list with Wertz & Roseboro. His barrage also included a 38 Goudey reprint of Tiger Rudy York. I think technically I should have reported Rudy on another server, but since I can't find a date on the card, I can just plead ignorance. Speaking of ignorance, GENO provides me an opportunity for another such plea. (Did that come out right?) He flanks in via Canada with some OPC's to do additional damage to my HOM/HOF and Tiger sets. He recorded hits of Perry, Martin & Virdon from the HOM/HOF lists. Actually the cards were from the 75 OPC set not Topps, but I have a few other cards in that binder that are really OPC. The cards look the same and have the same numbers, so who's going to know. Even if the FOOT patrol ransacks my binders and discovers the imposters, I can once again plead ignorance. (Hence my comment above.) Also in the Care package from Geno, were a couple 75 OPC's of Kaline and Freehan. These are already in their appropriate and legal places in the OPC Tigers binder. Speaking of 1975 sets and Kaline, an SSPC card was also part of the package. As is often a Geno tag along, I now have a Football card of Mel Eves. For those of you not familiar with Mel, the back of his card indicates he had a promising career with England'B'. I think he probably got suspended for posing in his underwear for this card. At any rate, I said all that to say this: Thanks alot Don & Geno for the timely pick-me-up! Although it's still a dull and drab day here in Grand Blanc MI, the good news is that it's not raining. Then again the bad news is that's snowing and blowing. I know because on the way out to get the mail I was darn near blown away. As I pulled the mail out of the box a couple pieces were whipped right of my hand and were actually blown away. I noticed that one was another 9 1/2 X 4 envelope with the aura of old cardboard about it. I snatched that one up right away and confirmed that it was indeed from OBCer LARRY GERSBACH. The other piece that blew away was of far less importance, probably a bill of some sort. I'm sure someone down the block will return it. As I walked back to the house the wind whistled and so did I as I spotted a puffy with TODD KNOWLES return address on it. When I finally made it back inside the cozy confines of the House of Maxwell, I had an opportunity to more closely peruse the rest of the mail and lo & behold: a smaller but no less welcomed envelope from MIKE WIERZBICKI. Wow, three packages in one day. To summarize: TODD sent 16 hits to the 58T list including HOM/HOFers Bauer, Wertz & Kuenn. He also included their new landlord, Mr. Maxwell his darn self. To round out the puffy Todd adds 10 hits to my recently posted 72T set. Thanks much Todd! MIKE's envelope contained an additional six hits to the 58T set, including Hank Sauer who missed induction into the HOM/HOF by just one vote. Thank's a bunch Mike. GERSH rounds out the old cardboard onslaught with three 58s and 8 72s including fellow Flint, MI native Merv Rettenmund. Much appreciated In all these 3 fine OBCers accounted for 43 hits, 25 to the 58T and 18 to the 72T. I find myself really geeked with the 58 set, brings back lots of memories. For those of you still reading, guess you could say the only thing windier then Grand Blanc tonight is your truly. Maybe we should have a Rambling Thanks server? Just returned from a long vacation for Thanksgiving...Ellen, Melissa and I had turkey in New Jersey, but before we made it home we ended up hitting New Paltz NY (where Ellen and I both went to college), New York City, Long Island (where Ellen grew up) and Amish Country in PA. Before all of that, we stayed one night at STEVE RITTENBERG's humble abode. Steve was a gracious host as always, and had some stuff to bring back homwe with me. I'll get to that a little later. Steve tried to see if he could get an mini-OBC get-together and card swap while I was visiting and invited the entire Maryland/Northern Virginia contingent. Realizing that my dupes box was pitiful, I came with about 10 three-inch D-ring binders to pass out (so if you happen to be in Steve's neighborhood and need one...or five...they're waiting for you), as well as a package for Peter Mead that had been sitting here for two months (Peter, if you're near Steve...it's waiting for you as well). However, I showed up to Steve's place to find that nobody besides Steve was waiting. I understand the day before Thanksgiving probably wasn't a good day to pull something like that off...so maybe the next time I'm in the area we can get something together. Steve was able to use a few of the cards in my dupes box as upgrades, and found a couple that other OBCers needed, so it wasn't a total loss. Steve had some stuff for me...I ended up with my first type cards from the T213 and Rodeo Meats sets, short stacks of 54T and 67T, three dozen 58Ts, a 55T Ed Roebuck (leaving me 12 cards to go on that set!), a 57T Lou Skizas in three pieces, two '66T high #s and some 65 Embossed. But he wasn't done...no, Steve forced (Yes, I said FORCED) me to take a stack of 64T Giants and enough UV stuff to choke Mr. Ed. With the UV cards, Steve wore his hard hat: he demolished several lists and gave me starter sets to add to the wantlist that weren't there. It took me 4 hours today to update my UV wantlist. After Thanksgiving, we managed to stop at a card shop in Long Island. Melissa was being so cute, one of the customers let her keep three of his 1975 Topps cards, including Oscar Gamble (who looked to Melissa to be wearing a Mickey Mouse hat!). Now that I'm back in town, I'm putting a buch of cards into my binders and need to figure out what to do with this stack of UV dupes...Thanks Steve! Take care, Yahoo! Thanks out to Peter Mead, for gridiron hits to my 1958 set (my first year of buying cards) and two on the 1955 Bowman, my favorite football I got my start on the 55 Bowmans in about 1960, when, as an 8-year old boy, I stumbled on some football cards on sale. Since cards only cost a nickel a pack then, these puppies must have truly been dirt cheap. I remember buying a bunch - and then being shocked to discover that they were from ancient history - 5 YEARS OLD. But I kept them anyway, and they ended up being the start of my set. Maybe in another 45 years I'll finish it.
