Hello All,

I had the pleasure of spending time with Mike Rich and a few of his friends yesterday at his home where we got together to watch the Rose Bowl. It was a heck of a game despite the outcome but we did not feel embarrassed by the performance of our Wolverines. As is usually the case during these get-togethers there was some exchange of cardboard. Mike did not disappoint - he handed me my portion of a "dealer scum" box that he had acquired during his last trip to Toronto. What a pleasant surprise awaited me - in the box were; (6) hits to the `69 OPC set, (6) `70 OPC Sporting News All Stars with McCovey, Jackson, Yaz, Aaron, F. Roby and Bench, (5) `71 OPC cards with a couple of WS cards and a Padres Team card, (24) hits to the `72 OPC set - Lou Piniella, Larry Bowa, Jeff Torborg in their playing days stand out, (21) hits to the `73 OPC set with Don Baylor, Rod Carew and the Red Sox team leading the way, (61) cards for my `74 OPC set with Lou Brock, Dave McNally, Dave Parker, Buddy Bell, Gene Michael, Jim Kaat, Steve Garvey and six team card to drop a few names, a SCP from the `77 OPC set - just Reggie Jackson, (2) Rookie cards from `83 OPC with Tony Gwynn and Ryne Sandberg and finally a SCP for my `72 Topps set - a Bobby Bonds card leaving only (3) cards to go (Koosman, Michaels & Mazerowski) to complete the set. All this and an additional (110) `72 OPC cards for the dupe box, now that's something to write about. Thanks Mike for this great package from Toronto.
Also received in the mail on Friday from Steve Rittenberg the start to a new set as Steve sends me (6) cards from the 1963 GAD Fun card set. Steve always has interesting items but I have Mike to thank again here as he convinced Steve that I needed to add this set to my list. Thanks Steve for thinking of me!!!
With the beginning of the new year more NEW SETS have been added to my list. Some Non-sport sets such as the GAD set as well as `60, `61 and `62 Bazookas, `58, `59, `60, `61, `63, `64, `70 and `71 OPC Football, many new Hockey sets just to name a few. I hope to get more cardboard out in the coming year as my resolution and perhaps take on the "Chuck Paris Challenge" as a way of getting more into the OBC spirit.
To all in our ranks may I wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year!!! BE WELL!!!

REGARDS ------------ MARK

So I get this package from the British contingent of OBC, and apparently Geno
figures I'm hungry or something. I get the initial layer of brown paperbag
off, exposing a box of "Pasta Roni" Angle Hair Pasta (with herbs). OK,
sounds good, stomach is rumbling. Get the box opened, to find another paper-bag-wrapped
parcel. Get through that, and find a box of Snyder's of Hanover
Pretzel Bakery. Now I've already had my hopes of angel hair pasta (with
herbs) dashed, so maybe a pretzel will help ease the hunger pangs. Alas,
Geno is fooling me there too, but all is well. Inside the pretzel box are
108 huge hits to my '77 football list, as well as a hit to the '78 list.Holy
cow, the damage! Lots of big names from that era of gridiron greatness.

Thank you very much Geno!! As soon as I get something to eat, I'll have fun
updating the 'ol list.

amongst the stack of cards--Nu-Card scoops, a Golden Press Greenberg,

to my 1970 Milton Bradley set (Tony Taylor), a 1979 OPC Lou Brock anda
1947 Homogenized Bread Aaron Robinson. And that only begins telling youabout
this package. Many thanks Mark for going overboard!

And talking about overboard......I send one card to Ken Morganti. I can only
guess that he is having to make room for all the new sets he has added to
his wantlist. RedMan and Kelloggs certainly take up a lot of space. Many
thanks Ken for two 1952s, a 53 and a 64 Maz taking that set to a mere eight
cards. Early 60s and late 70s Topps football completed the package witha
1980 Terry Bradshaw as ballast for the package. Simply put WOW again!

Can't say that I am speechless--but that will probably come with the next OBC

Dateline Silver Spring.
Today we received word that Mr. M. Talbot of Sterling Heights Michigan has
killed not one but TWO sets being collected by yours truly.

Mark sent a "Canoe Racing" card from the T73 Indian Life set to finish off
that set. He also sent 1975 OPC Danny Cater (boo!) to kill off my Red Sox
team set. Oh, the hours I've spent looking for these two!

Mark also did mortal damage to the Fleer Globetrotters set (2 hits to a 15
card list), Flag Midgees (2 of 7), T107 State Seals (1 of 29). In case that
wasn't enough, Mark added in a Evel Knievel card (vroom!) and a couple of
James Bond cards.

Wow. What an awesome package. Payback forthcoming!!

Star cards are always appreciated.

Thanks very much Mike.

Ed Schott sends a starter set of 24 of the 63 Topps set. I still don't have
many of those guys, so these are really appreciated.

I'm jealous of the guys who need low numbers of cards to finish off their
Topps run. After over 10 years in OBC, I still need over 3100. I'm not
crying understand. In that 10 years I've finished 1952-58 66 69 71 and 73-80
Topps, 1948-55 Bowman, and T206 (well except for those pesky variations like
Honus Wagner, Plank, Magie and Doyle). The 60's were a dead time in baseball for
me. I was in college, starting my career, and getting married. I guess its
time for an all out assault on that decade. I'd love to cut that number to
about 1500 this year. I'm grateful to all my OBC friends who've helped me
keep this great hobby in my life. Have a great new year everyone. - Doug

along some Bowmans and a nice note encouraging me to start new sets.
Although there is more than 1 card to one set included, I'm afraid I
won't do it. As I have stated in the past, my goal from the beginning
was to complete Topps sets and my Hank collection. If those get
completed, then I'll consider starting other sets. And I aplogize for
not being so active lately. I'm in sort of a lull right now with my
collecting due to some other factors in my life. We all go through
these periods, just one of those things. So thanks Bob for giving me a
great reminder that we have started another terrific OBC Year, Lynn

Thanks go out to Steve Rittenberg, who sends along some Red Man cards

a third is on the way eventually. This reduces my list to just #233 George
Gervin to finish off the 1975-76 set and finally take Kent Goto's picture off my
dartboard for starting me on all these sets at the last Chicago Nationals
(There is still one hoop set on my list, but that's due to my own variation
insanity). Steve tops it off with a 1912 Hassan Lighthouse card which is a set
I've been secretly collecting - and Steve has provided all the cards for so
far. I'm going to add them to my list next time I update in case any other
non-sport collectors have some of these laying around. THANKS STEVE!!
I also forgot to mention the mini OBC gathering I had with John Scott
Gray. He was in town for a philosophy conference and we met up to discuss some OBC

thought I had him preoccupied with the cards I handed him, but he still beat me to
paying for dinner. THANKS JSG!!

card really makes you think about today's players vs yesterday's. Today
is't all about steroid use, while Jones' card says "Willie likes to eat

Today I went to a monthly show up near Ed Schott and Peter Mead. Peter
couldn't make it but Ed was there. Ed told me that ex-OBCer Bill List
usually stops by as well. I got to meet Bill today. Now that's I've
brought Joe Greco back into OBC, I can start working on Bill.

A special appearance was made at the show by Richard "Fugitive" Kimball and
his daughter Paige. The Fuge gave me a TON of cards for my football sets,
as did Ed. And I found one or two on my own as well. After the show, Fuge
and Paige followed me back to my house where we hung out and swapped some
more. Fuge told me about how he cleaned out a dealer of his basketball
cards today -- then he let me go through them for my short lists before he
attacks his longer ones. I ended up with TWELVE hits to my 1976-77 set.
That's huge considering I only need 20 others. And there were some 1975-76
cards for me plus a few more 1977-78 grey backs. These grey backs are

I also worked a trade today. In exchange for some chocolate chip cookies &
sorting one of my dupes boxes, Paige Kimball received a 59 Topps Pirates
team card and a 59 Topps Whitey Ford. I'll make that trade any day!

Also got in some mail today, including some OPC Red Sox from Ron Perry. A
1969 Lee Stange completes that set. A 1973 Team card gets me down to just a
Dewey RC. Any hits are appreciated but Ron pulled these from his own set to
send them my way so I'm extra grateful.

I'm slowly getting organized here and I'm slowly getting caught up with
overdue packages. Hopefully I will soon embark on another round of "hit
every list of every person in OBC".

Also in over the past few days was a packed envelope from Trader Doug. Doug sent along 8 hits to the 1958 Topps list. Hadn't been hit in some time, so I appreciate those! Along for the ride was a nice SCP from the '54 Topps set. Thanks so much, Doug!

First a couple of thanks:

Erik Greenwood takes time away from the new addition to send out a couple of
beautiful 1952 Topps. Players from both ends of the spectrum--Bobby Shantz
5'7" and 153 pounds and Walt Dropo 6'5" 220 pounds. Amazing how they both
fit nicely into an 8-pocket binder page.

Once upon a time Oklahoma State beat St. Josephs in last year's annual Bob Reed
NCAA pool. The Grizzled one has emerged from mourning for his home town
team to "settle up." Many thanks Howard for a 55 Bowman Yogi and a hit to
the seldom hit 51 blue back set.

Also need to thank Steve Rittenberg for stopping by this moring and dropping
off a few hits. Sorry I wasn't here--it has been an absolutely hellacious

Now for the ramble--and the joy of cardboard. I know all of us enjoy the hobby--and
that is what it is truly about for all of us--a hobby. I have received
four or five packages the last couple of days--and for a brief moment
those little pictures of baseball players have allowed me to escape a little
of this week's reality. An innnocent escape to the days of Willie, Mickey
and the Duke.

Some of you met my wife this summer. You probably noticed she walks with cuff
crutches--result of an accident twenty-five years ago. Well a couple of
weeks after the National she fell and broke both bones in her lower left leg.
She became the pround owner of a titanium rod in her left tibia--and a
several month recovery.

Hard to believe--she fell again this past Wednesday and broke her right legthe
same way. Now she has matching titanium rods--and another long recovery
to look forward too. I suppose my two girls and I am doing all right--but
it has been a tough week--and those little cardboard treasures have allowed
me a momentary respite from thinking about my wife.

So a special thanks to the OBC community this week--for sharing cardboard memories;
for your thoughts and prayers; and for your friendships. There really
isn't anything like it.....

MAC WUBBEN sent a puffy, filled with many hits to my recently started 1974 Topps Traded set.

DAN ANGLAND adds a SCP hit to the 1974 Traded set, and PAUL BIGGS adds 1 hit to the 1974 and 2 hits to the 1976 Traded sets.

Thanks, guys!

Actually, Grant, although I've been aware of Andy Bathgate since I was a kid (he played for the Red Wings at one point),I didn't know that!!

The town of Bathgate is, in fact, the village "next-door" (only 2 miles) to my own Scottish home town of Armadale. In my late teens-early 20s, my friends and I used to frequent the pubs of Bathgate regularly on weekends.

Surprisingly, it never dawned on me that there might by a connection. How did you know about it?

I guess I should start an Andy Bathgate collection now!

drew a ton of walks. I love heady ballplayers like that. So thanks Doug for a

Hello All,

Got a surprise from Lynn Miller today. Lynn hopes that the "condition" of the cards he sends are good enough for my collection. Well to say the least these razor sharp specimens from the `50's and 60's are terrific!!! Lynn allows me to scratch (2) more Topps cards off the list by sending me a `57 Topps Jim Hearn card and a beautiful `60 Topps Frank Barnes card (HI #). I am speechless Lynn and express my gratitude to you for your kindness. BE WELL!!!

REGARDS ------------ MARK

-------------- Original message --------------
I listed my needs for some newer cards and Mark answered the call. Did
he ever!!! The envelope arrived today and it was little bit bigger than
I would have expected. Just figured it was extra packing. I don't have
that devious detective mind that Grant has. Upon opening the envelope,
the shiny stuff came out, the batch I expected. But another larger
package still remained with a note "Be careful opening this" So
gingerly, and with much anticipation, my eyes eventually fell upon a
large portrait photo of my hero "The Hammer". Extremely kind and
generous! But wait, holy Batman, it's a hit to my vintage list. A
beautiful 1967 Dexter Press. Everyone loves surprises, but this is
fantastic! Appreciate the "extra" item immensely. A thousand thanks Mark.

Hello All,

I met up with Mike Rich and Ron Perry today at the "Redford" show. I was limited to about an 1 1/2 hours of browse time because of family obligations but that still gave us plenty of time to hand off cardboard to one another.
Ron Perry was the first OBC trader I saw at the show - he promptly handed me a couple for the `51 Bowman quest, with Andy Seminick and Ralph Branca. Great hits to a hard to hit set (for me anyways).
Mike Rich arrived about 30 minutes later and handed me a team set bag of cards that I guess I had left behind at the New Years Day get together, so now I have (8) `78 Fleer Football cards (only #8 remains to kill the set), (5) `77 Fleer Football cards, (2) `77 Topps Glossy Hockey insert variations and (5) `66 Topps Baseball Rub-offs with Reds pennant, Aspromonte, Chance, Lewis and Monbouquette. Once again another nice "stack" from Mike - Thanks.
I only had a short period of time and this months show had vendors who had some wonderful memorabilia items to look through. I only wish I had more time!!! I did manage to find (4) `69 Citgo Coins from my list (only two to go, Killebrew and Swoboda) and some `61 & `62 Football and some Hockey cards that I just added to my list. Great to meet up with OBC'er, share stories and hunt for treasure, even if for just a short period of time. Thanks again Mike and Ron - BE WELL!!!!

It was 28 degrees this morning. I'm not complaining,
because I grew up in much worse conditions (and
besides...there wasn't any snow along with the cold).
However, since we were dealing with 80 degree temps

Hi all,
The puffies continue to roll in here. I don't think I've gotten so much
OBC mail since I first joined the group. I guess my wantlist is easy to hit...
although a lot of the wantlist copies I have on my computer are older than two
years, so it feels like I first joined in more ways than one. Today's arrival
comes from Richard Kimball, who rounds up a bunch of wayward Kelloggs cards
from many years and sends them to me. Plenty of HOF'ers in the stack too. A
couple of the cards were trimmed of the white borders. They look nicer (other than
the cracks), but I thought it must've been a lot harder to trim them with the
thick plastic. They fill a slot in the binder... well, most of a slot ;-)
THANKS FUGE!!
We're getting ready for another foot or two of snow this weekend... and
to think some people around here were complaining about the cold and sub-zero
wind chills. I hope I can get the door open to enjoy the warmer weather

Football thanks out to Paul Biggs for three hits to the first football set I
ever opened packs for, and therefore probably my favorite all time set, 1976.
I remember opening packs of these cards at my uncle's house when I used
to come to Merced to spend the summer with my grandpa & grandma. I usedto
walk to Bernie's Liquor (still there, but not selling cards anymore) and
buy cards, stop by my uncle's on the way back and open them. I recall that
I was pretty fascinated by both the brightly colored footballs on the front,
and the fact that it was the first year that the Buccaneers and Seahawks
came out. Being from the Pacific Northwest, it was neat that "we" had afootball
team of our own. Didn't really matter though, as I was already asolid
Rams fan.

Thanks for the cards and the memories Paul!

Lions and Bears). Sonny Jurgensen, Alex Karras, Dick Butkus and Bryon
Piccolo were just some of the stamps that were included. Thanks Dan!

Neal Thomas sends reimbursement for some Wheatie boxes I picked up for him
and he included some vintage Bowman cards. A couple from 1954 and four from
1955 leaving only 60 left. The 55’s were Umpire Larry Napp, Don Newcombe,
Walt Dropo and a trimmed WILLIE MAYS! Thanks for the huge hits Neal!

Thanks again guys!

Thursday I got a nice little package from Bob Donaldson containing seven 1974

We had a one night "mini vacation" up in Cleveland (ok, I can hear
the snickering out there.....). We went to see the touring show
of "The Producers" and had a great time. The anguish of returning
home to work was substantially tempered by a bulky package from Todd
Knowles, containing a copy of the book "Our Tribe" by Terry Pluto.
Terry is an extremely talented writer in our local Akron newspaper,
and somehow this book had never gotten into my library - so it will
fit extremely well.

And tucked inside, a 1922 W573 of Tribesman George Uhle. That may be
my first from that set. Uhle is a true trivia answer - he has, I
think, the highest batting average of any pitcher that had at least
500 at bats (.288). He was no slouch on the mound either, winning
exactly 200 games, and 27 wins in 1926.

Much appreciated, Todd - two great additions to my Tribe collection.

Subject: Thanks to Shawn, Andy, JSG and Bob!!!

Hello All,

Saturday was a bust at the mailbox. I spent a couple of hours digging out from the blizzard that hit the Detroit area, I even saw the mail truck drive by the house. But the day went on and the time ran out on my Saturday delivery, so you know what that means. A ton of mail on Monday!!!! Four OBC traders stepped up and sent me goodies to fend off the "Snow-bound Blues", so a hearty thanks to; Shawn Adkins, Andy Cook, John Scott Gray and Bob Donaldson.

Bob Donaldson finds a couple of elusive cards for my collection!!! From the `74 Topps football set a very nice Tom Dempsey card, what Lion fan will ever forget the `70 kick of 63 yards in the final seconds of the game that sent us to the showers in defeat (Lions fans get use to this sort of "unbelievable" abuse). Accompanying the Eagles kicker was a North Star card from the `73-`74 Topps hockey set with defenseman Dennis O'Brien. Kudos Bob!!!

Andy Cook sends (2) waiver wire claims from the `64 Topps Football set, Jack Spikes (what a great Football name) and George Blair now have a new home in my football binder. Many thanks to you Andy!!!

John Scott Gray pulls the "random act of kindness" routine and surprises me with a `53 Bowman color card of Red Sox Maury McDermott. I love this set and this card is great JSG - THANKS!!!

Shawn Adkins sends a "Big old box", which can only mean one thing. Shawn has opened his (4) boxes of this years Topps cards and sent me the empty boxes with cards on the bottom. Shawn did this last year and I am beginning to enjoy the tradition. Shawn also included a box marked "filler cards", and that's just what it was, Topps, Dunross, Leaf, Score, UD stuff from `88 - `92 or so. I don't know what I will do with most of this stuff but it was fun to look through. Finally, Shawn floors me with a `33 Goudey card of Pepper Martin - this card has forced me to change my "have" list for `33 Goudey to a "Want-List". Shawn you out did yourself, but I do appreciate it!!!

I will be getting more "stuff" out in the mail as I continue working on my New Years resolution to try to be more active, render more RAOK and be more timely in my trading and responses. Best wishes to all - BE WELL!!!!!

After some research, it has been determined that Don Rice deserves OBC herorecognition
for finishing off my '74 set back in September. I didn't recognize
it then, and here's why.

A year or so ago, I won a large lot of cards (ranging between '70 & '79) with
the unfortunate thing about them being that they were all glued to contruction
paper (9 to a side, both sides). I got them, briefly looked throughthem,
quickly got discouraged & put them away. Cut to tonight when I pullthem
out of my son's closet and start to pull them off the paper. Pretty tedious
stuff! Turns out the guy (who must've done this when he was a kid)sorted
them out by division. So when I got to the NL West, I got to thinking
"hmm, wonder if #173 Randy Jones (Padres) is in there." Jones was the lone
card remaining after Don sent me the Fisk/Bench All Star Catchers card.
Yep, there it was, set complete!

As a little aside, Glenn has gotten me mostly convinced that my '74 set isn't
truly done until I have all the Washington variations, but in a moment of
weakness I'm going to call it done, while still going after the variations.
 Sorry, Glenn!

So anyway, long story short, Don has been duly credited on my wantlist as an

An intercontinental interservice package arrived here today.
Europe-Asia, Air Force-Navy. How cool is that in OBC! Geno had
mentioned to me earlier that he had come across a non-sport British Navy
set of stamps and asked me if I would like to have them. How could I
refuse such generosity and thoughtfulness. Well the stamps arrived, a
complete 50 set of 1939 Will's Cigarettes "Life in the Royal Navy".
These are about the size of a T-206 and are actually stickers with a
peel off back. Wasn't aware that type of peel-off stuff existed back
then, pretty neat. And they are all intact! But even better, he also
sent an orginal book for the stamps/stickers to be mounted in. Yahoo!
And better yet, there are 18 already mounted in the book. So I have
some dupes for those non-sport type card(?) collectors. Anyway it's a
great little set of some signifcant history and relevance to me and I
thank you very much Geno for thinking about me. But of course there was
more. Geno is famous among us for one other thing. The obligatory APBA

Lynn --

I must admit I ran out of APBA cards awhile ago, but I had been saving that
one for you! I just purchased a lot of British tobacco cards of lots of
different subjects, so in lieu of APBA cards, everyone will soon be getting
Kings and Queens, Ducks, Footballers, etc...

By the way, I especially like the Navy card about the "Rum Rations!"

Hi all,

John (Pugs) Pugsley sends me a 1967 7th series Checklist, that I did
not expect and I love surprises.Inside the envelope was a note saying
thanks for the hits a while back..I did some searching and I found
that I sent John some cards back in March 2004..

You know what they say "something good is worth the wait!!"..and this
card was. (even through I did not expect return fire)

Pugs, you must do some great book keeping as I had to dig through a
ton of emails to see what I sent you.

Thanks for the surprise Pugs!!

George Vrechek has invaded my house! First, I get my Old Cardboard magazine
and there's a picture of George's melon along with Tim Newcomb - pretty cool
I must say. BTW Chris, great article on WWI! Back to George - the next day
through the mail slot comes a pair of 1951 Red Back gems - Mike Garcia and
Luke Easter - yippee! Don't you just love coming home to OBC packages?
Nothing makes a day better - I often call my wife at lunch and ask her if I
got anything good in the mail. Today she said we got a big check from the
insurance company, but I asked "No, I mean anything GOOD!" You get the
picture. Thanks again George! By the way, I used to live on Ontario Street
in Chicago as well, about three blocks towards the lake from Michigan Ave -

Hello All,

Had to write you all about the great incoming packages that I received from a trio of fabulous OBC traders with a triple play of SCP's. Thanks to:

Shawn Adkins for a set killer - a `69 OPC card of Bob Gibson!!! Way to go Shawn.

Another SCP arrived from John Pugsley - a very cool upgrade `67 checklist variation that was on my list. The set is complete but (4) variations remain, John hits a set that I've been dying to close out - Thanks Pugs!!!

Finally, Larry Gersbach finds a 1976 unmarked checklist of the Chicago Bears, leaving me with just a few checklist to find and a Payton RC to finish this set off. Larry also includes a nice set of animal stickers for my daughter Kendall. She loves 'em Larry - Thanks so much for thinking of her.

BE WELL!!!!

Subject: Four Bagger!

Four fellow OBCers share the spotlight today:

JOHN LEROUX sends some cards from his recent waiver
wire. a '53 Jim Rivera, seven hits to the '61 Topps
set, a '58 Ray Boone, Minoso and two other '56s and a
'71 card that goes into the final page in that biner!

BILL MALSON sends three hits...a nice '61T and two
woddies including the final series checklist.

As a small-time writer, it looks really neat to get
mail with the letterhead of a newspaper...but this
envelope from the Tampa Tribune was even better;
instead of a rejection letter, I get a 6-pack of cards
from BOB D'ANGELO. Bob hits my '58, '59, '66, '67 and
'68 lists.

Lastly, DAVE FALLEN sends along a note letting me know
he appreciated my recent "Old Cardboard" article and
sends along twelve cards to tell me just how much. A
TCP from '59 including Jackie Jensen, Eli Grba from
'61 and eight '69 Topps cards including Bob Gibson and
Rod Carew's All Star card.

Thanks for sending these cards. I always appreciate
the help with the lists, and Ellen likes the fact that
it gets me away from the computer so she can use it.

Take care,

Well maybe they didn't all arrive today, but I did. And I really
appreciated them today too. This has been one rough week. I spent Sunday, Monday, and
Tuesday in (or traveling too and from) San Diego (are you crying yet). I
was there for a very short meeting to help me learn more about the prevention
of child sexual abuse. I became our corporate expert on that topic about 1 1/2
years ago. Fortunately the Boy Scouts already had the finest youth
protection program of any youth agency before I got the assignment. But there are a
lot of parts of my job that are more fun than that one. I got home Tuesday
afternoon and left Wednesday morning on an emergency trip to the Florida Keys
(I'm sure you;re crying now). Unfortunately the trip was to end the
employment of an old friend who screwed up bad. Someone told me once you shouldn't
hire your friends. I flew back home today totally bummed out. Arriving cards
helped make me feel better.

Brian Dwyer sent 3 61T's (was Don Zimmer ever really that young?). He Also
sent 26 hits to the 68T wantlist. Thanks Brian.

Mark Zentovich sent 3 67's including Mickey Lolich. He also sent 6 68's,
all of them of the rare traded variation. Thanks Mark.

Rich Robinson scoured his dups box and found a 1967 Ralph Terry. He offered
to send football but I've got my hands full with baseball. Thanks Rich

Bob Donaldson found one that I needed, a 1961 Roger Maris. 1961 was a
pretty good year for Roger. Thanks Bob.

Jeff DeLott sends 2 67T's. By 1967 Joe Nuxhall was 38 years old. Joe had
first pitched for Cincinnatti 23 years before that when he was 15. Thanks

All the cards are very much appreciated. Thanks guys. - Doug

Hits to 7 different sets !!

1957 was the oldest. The Senators hurler depicted on the card has another of
those unfortunate names that must have been difficult to grow up with...Card
#403 Dick Hyde. I'll resist the temptation to comment further...

Let's move along. How about a hit to 1958 ? Al Smith. Now there's an uncontroversial
name for you !

1961 has Gene Baker and a young Dick Howser.

1962 is Bill Pleis and my gosh that's a pretty fuzzy picture...maybe even abit
on the green side...I'll resist the temptation to comment further...

1963 was represented 5 times, some Tipton names like Lumpe and Hamilton. Love
'em !

1964 has rookies and old guys. #233 Hal Smith (not related to Al Smith above)
looks like he should be running a hardware store, not donning catcher's gear
although he's supposed to only be 34 in this picture...say what?

Yuk included a more recent vintage in his great envelope...a 1966 of Chisoxstar
Gary Peters !! One heckuva pitcher !!

Hey, this is one heckuva package from OBC cool guy Yuk Chow !!

Hello All,

The "new" mail carrier and I had a chat today. It seems that Wyatt is in need of surgery, heart surgery at the age of 40. Keep him in your thoughts my friends, Wyatt has a wife and a couple of kids, much too early in life to be confronted with these complications.
At any rate, in the mail today came a nice offering from Dan Coen. Dan sent me a "mixed bag" of OPC cards from `70, `74 and 75. Matty Alou AS card from `70, (3) from `74 with Murrell, Kranepool and Wright and (3) from `75 with Beckert, McCarver and Hough. Thanks a bunch Dan.
I got some more out going packages to put together today so more of you will be seeing stuff from Southeastern Michigan soon. BE WELL!!!!

While the subject will bring up thoughts of the
Grateful Dead, I'm glad this one kept on "Truckin"!
Though I must admit...it shouldn't surprise anybody
that an envelope that takes 2 and a half months to
travel from Pennsylvania to Florida -- twice -- would
come from an OBCer we all know as "the Fugitive."

It seems that on Nov. 11th, FUGE sent along a surprise
envelope...to an address where I haven't lived for
nearly 2 years. So, it came back to him and he sent
it back to a more recent address. I certainly
appreciate his persistence, as I can now cross five
more off the 1971 Topps list.

Thanks to Fuge, my 1971 set-in-progress now has
Freehan, Bryany and Billy Martin, as well as a few
semi-hi #s.

Take care,

me (2nd of the week) upon my arrival at the PO. A nice group of htis to
my kid sets, a trio of 72's w/George Scott, a 78 hit, a 73 hit, a 74

and now they are worthy of joining their bindermates. Also included

much for the help !

Subject: Doctor John Ball III

I've spent the last 2 hours sifting through old emails (and I mean OLD. In
the middle was the creation of the first OBCAC and all the stuff as to why it
started). My memories of Doc J started over on Prodigy many moons ago. We
would chat and trade on the message boards there. Just in dealing with him, I
KNEW he was OBC material, and invited him to join the group. First of all, he
was a man of class and dignity... he never had a negative thing to say about
anyone or anything, even when OBC had its trials and tribulations. Second, he
was a good looking guy ... We both looked similar except (as MANY OBCers
would always remind me) I was much shorter! 3rd, he had a great wit and you
always knew when you read about a card he got, that he was genuinely excited about
it. Not to mention when he got a Gus Triandos card! He was also very excited
about the Conlons. I'd like to think that our little corner of the world
helped make his days a little brighter (although, he was the one usually sending
out the sunshine). Every year for the longest time, right around father's
day, Doc would remind me how Jim Bunning pitched a perfect game against the Mets.
It was a running joke and I would always look forward to his father's day
email. I guess this one hits a little harder because I was his mentor before we
had mentors. I never did get to meet Doc in person, but as with all of you
guys, he was a personal friend of mine. I feel bad that I really didn't know
about his condition, as a massive "healing power of cardboard" I know would
have lifted his spirits as much as he must have lifted all those people around
him. Phyllis, I can't express how much I feel for your loss. We too, have lost
not only a valued member of this group, but a tremendous friend. In this
email, I've attached some of the emails in word form so us oldtimers can remember
what kind of man he was and the rookies can get a sense of the giving and fun
loving nature that was John Ball. Down below are some of the emails from
those father's days. I always think about John on that day and will do so for
the rest of my life. But now, we close the door on the Gus Triandos Research
Center, as there will never be another curator who could handle such an
important task. Good night Doc... Godspeed and you and Gus will live with us

OBC World,
I had the pleasure of another OBC visit yesterday from the gent nicknamed DIGDUGDIG,
from south of Florence.

He'll be moving to East Florence soon ( actually Mapleton...one of those "don't
blink" towns in rural Oregon) so he must have thought about lighteninghis
load of cardboard before the move....Doug dropped off 25 hits to my 1958
wishlist !!! A SCP from 1957 completes the delivery !!! What a great lot
of cards !!

It took me awhile to warm up to the 1958 set, as I always considered the front
design one of Topps' weaker efforts...but read the backs, boys !! These
are some creative authors from Topps who can describe a benchwarmer with such
praise !!

Why card #64 Joe Lonnett is adorned with , and I quote... "Joe can hit both
inside and outside pitches"
Well, that ought to help out , good job Joe!!

Card # 462 claims that " the one thing that seems to be certain of him is that
he belongs somewhere in the lineup". Now unless that was written by Gary
Geiger's mom, it's fairly certain to me that the Tribe didn't need another
.223 hitter in their lineup !!

Yes, true classics !

Big thanks to Doug Chamberlain for the cardboard pleasures !

OBC Forever,
