Along with 11 other friends and family, we went out to celebrate our birthdays (Mine on Sept 1, Maureen on the 2nd). Great food and drink, good company, and a beautiful city (not to mention weather that’s a cut above Glasgow) combined to make it a weekend to remember for a long time to come. On arriving home, a trio of OBC envelopes were waiting for me. Bob Donaldson sends along a waiver wire pick up – a ’69 Decal of Camilo Pascual. Bob surprised me though by sending a ’70 Topps Super Freehan, and ’ 67 high and ’65 along for the ride. Peter Mead comes up with some 73/74 Red Wings, which sandwich a real surprise – a Nu-card Scoop of Bobby Thomson. The Thomson collection expands further still! Kent Goto has been busy of late, and I’m glad to say that he decided to hit Glasgow – and boy did he hit it big! Four 1961s incl #490 Bunning and 3 hi#s (Ramos, Cardwell & Perry AS) and 3 woodies (Snyder, Aguirre, and #589 Turley) combined to make this a great envelope! Thanks to all 3 of you for helping to round off what had already been a terrific weekend! An finally, a small treat….or perhaps something to scare your dog or children with. On the Saturday evening of the aforementioned weekend in Barcelona, we went out for an amazing meal, and got dressed up to the nines to do so – 4 of the men (including myself) in kilts. That is kind of an ironic note, with Hurricane Ivan heading up my alley (again). If that sucker hits where it is supposed to, I am thinking my entire card collection might be waterlogged (if I can find it at all.). Can see the scenario now -- "Yes dear, I will bring the kids on the next trip. Gotta load the baseball cards first." If we have to evacuate, not sure where we are gonna go, since the whole state is in kind of bad shape right now. My brother-in-law in Jacksonville just had power restored today (good thing you know someone up there in the power company, Chris). In all seriousness, we are hoping that the storm will either veer away or die out quickly. We are waterlogged down here and cannot take too much more. Steve Rittenberg – Yet another marvellous package from one of OBCs All-Stars. 9 ‘72s – all high numbers – brings that list down to only 8 to go!! Nearly there! Steve also hits my Tigers List, with a ’61 Post Kaline, ’ 63 Post Kaline and Bruton, a TipTop Bread Johnny Gorsica, some early ‘80s Topps Traded and a pair of 1976 “’42” PlayBall. Finally, the package was rounded off with 3 UV Bobby Thomson cards. Great cards!!!! Thank you, gentlemen!! I also received an ebay package this week. A great starter set (43 cards) of ’65 Topps Embossed. Add another set to the want list! Finally, a big vote of congratulations to the victorious European Ryder Cup team. I spent 3 days glued to my TV, cheering on my adopted team and waiting for an American fightback that never materialised. The Europeans were a joy to watch, playing throughout the 3 day tournament as a true team, rather than the collection of individuals that comprised the US lineup. It was extra nice to see the clinching putt holed by a Scot, Colin Montgomerie. It’ s especially good to see the return of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and etiquette to this competition after the shameful debacle of Brookline in 1999. The recent captains of the teams – Curtis Strange/Sam Torrance in 2002, and Sutton/Langer this year – have all done a terrific job in this respect. Roll on Ireland in 2006! Doug also slipped some cardboard my way as well with a `34 Goudey of Bill Terry, a `39 Playball of Eddie Joost and a `62 Woodie of Wally Post. Splendid to get (3) solid hits to the list, but even better to spend a few hours swapping stories about work, scouts, cards, baseball, sports and any other thing that came to mind. Mike also added to the culinary pleasure by once again suggesting his favorite bakery in the Greektown area (another Detroit Landmark) for tortes, eclairs and cannoli (YUM!!!). Mike then picked up the tab at the bakery and he did the driving as well - so a big thanks out to Mike. Then comes the cardboard. With Peter Mead in town on business it was a great excuse to gather members of the F.O.O.T. and head down to the Park. Ron Perry, Earl Kilborne, Mike Rich, Mike's neighbor Mark Kaylian and I all piled into the family van from our rendezvous spot just off of I-75 (the Elk club the hosts the infamous Wednesday show). 20 minutes into downtown to meet up with Peter Mead at his hotel and the 4-5 block walk to the stadium. We made it to our seats just prior to the opening pitch where we watched the White Sox get blanked in the opening frame and the home-town heroes open our stanza of the first with back to back diggers which started off a see-saw battle which eventually saw our Tigers come out victorious 6-4. It was a great ball game but as always when the F.O.O.T. gets together filled with stories, facts, trivia and great conversation between the pitches. Peter bounced around so that we all got a chance to catch up with him, I believe it was his first meeting with Earl and Ron. I got a chance to chat with all present at one time or another as we enjoyed the game. Great night for friends and baseball. Thanks Mike for the tics and the pastery treats at the "Greektown" bakery after the game, and thanks to Earl, Ron, Peter and Mark for just being there. Did I mention it's a 2 1/2 hour one-way trip from Ron and abot 1 1/4 hours for Earl. Great to see you guys. Of course the evening would not be complete w/o cardboard flying so I want to point out that Earl knocked off (17) 2004 Topps cards from the list and Peter chipped in (10) fabulous tiptonesque `62 Post Canadian Baseball cards with Tiger Steve Boros. Many of these cards are cleverly cropped to omit the Post insignia which is just classic for an OBC style collection. Thank to Earl and Peter for bringing the cardboard. And thanks to all who have made it this far through this Morganti-length Thank You Ramble. I wish you all could have been at this one - BE WELL!!! Thanks out to Mike Rich, Ron Perry, Mark Talbot & Mikes other friend Mark for a great time at Comerica Park where we witnessed a Tigers win. Specific thanks to MIKE for providing the tickets and the after game goodies at his favorite bakery. Thanks also to RON for providing the transportation from my place to our rendezvous at the Elks. As with any OBC / FOOT gathering there was the traditional passing o' the cardboard. Thanks again to MIKE for delivering the 75 SSPC Tigers set from STEVE RITTENBERG. Thanks much Steve. MARK was not only the designated driver from the Elks to Comerica and back but he was also the designated hitter of my HOM/HOF list with a 56T Bobby Thompson & 73T's of Billy Martin, Bill Virdon & Elston Howard. Speaking of Howards, PETER delivered a two cool 62 Bell Brand Frank "Hondo" Howard. This card was a twofer as it will go in my Hall of Favorites binder & also serve as a type card as my first and only Bell Brand. Thanks again to Mike, Ron, Mark, Mark (sounds like that hair lip dog I had as a kid) & Peter. PETER MEAD hits the new addition to my wantlist...I decided to put the '73 and '74 checklist cards up last week, and Peter is the first one to hit it, in the form of a '73 Cardinals checklist.
