New E-mail Address Hi all... Sorry for cross-posting, but I know not everyone subscribes to the Ramblings server so I thought I better post this here as well. I just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know that I'm switching over all of my accounts to Cox.net. After 18 years of being part of AOL (yeah, when I started my disk was AOL v. 1.0... still have it!) , I've dragged my heels long enough. We no longer have a computer that is supported by AOL. They are not upgrading their services for old Macs and we are not allowed to install it on my wife's work PC (for good reason). Plus, I'm already paying Cox for the high speed internet connection and we could use the extra $14.95 a month (hey, maybe I'll be able to afford that '58 Teddy Ballgame now! ). It'll take most the rest of the month to get everything smoothed out (changing e-mail links on my websites, etc.) but I've already changed all my Yahoo group memberships to the new e-mail address. I've also changed to digest format, which should help me be more responsive to folks who write individual notes to me. Take care and thanks for your patience during these changes... P.S., Despite leaving AOL, I will still be collecting AOL disks... especially the tins, clamshells, and older diskettes (anyone still have their old AOL for DOS diskettes? ) I guess Howard was right... if it's not dead and rotting, I collect it. ================= To: "Thanks" Date: Sat, 10 Jul 2004 19:34:49 -0400 From: "Steve Rittenberg" Subject: Mucho gracias Eduardo Thanks to Ed Schott for an in person meeting today at a show down in Chantilly VA. Hello All, I have just returned from a business trip to Miami where I attended an Educational Leadership Conference and was so pleased to find plenty of great items sent by wonderful collectors in our group. I would like to thank the following OBC members for there generosity. Jim Beauchemin sent along a SCP fro the 1970 Topps Super set - a very nice specimen featuring Willie Davis. This is a very nice addition to my collection - Thanks Jimbo!!! Erik Greenwood sends along a starter set of (63) Tobacco cards from the Recruit Little Cigars set of Flags of All Nations. This close to 1/2 the 150 card set and as soon as I find the few that I had already I will be posting this interesting prewar set. Thanks Erik!!! Earl Kilbourn (EEK) welcomed me to his home for a few hours prior to my departure from Flint Bishop airport. Earl lives about 20 minutes from the airport and we had a very nice visit. Earl also provided me with plenty of action to my UV sets with (62) hits to this years set and (9) cards from `98 thru `01. EEK also provided (5) cards for the `54 Archive set with Willie Mays. He also handed me a short stack of ComicBall cards he felt that Kendall would like. Thanks for the hospitality and the cardboard Earl!!! Lynn Miller checks in with a `76 SSPC card of Red Sox manager Darrell Johnson. Along for the overseas trip were (16) cards for this years quest which are also very much appreciated. Thanks Lynn!!! Finally, Andrew Adeboi from another group that specializes in OPC cards sends out (19) assorted gems from `67 thru `74, all OPC. Included were Pinson, Alston, Fingers, Nettles, Zisk and McDowell. Andrew is more than fair and if approached I recommend him as a good trader. In the coming days I should get some more cardboard out, Kendall and I may be going camping so that we can meet up with some friends at the National in Cleveland next weekend. My friends, Thanks go out to the following great traders, who have graced my box in thelast few days with cardboard (and cardboard related) treasures: First and foremost, big thanks go to Joel Glickman, who shares an OBC pendent that he says debuted at Vegas this year -- it is a sharp looking pin that I am sure will see some action in the coming years! Lynn Miller does it again -- leaving me speechless! He sends two 48 Bowmans (Bill McCahan and Walker Cooper), two 49 Bowmans (a set I only have a handful from), a 75 Hostess of the Hammer, Hank Aaron, and an SSPC of Steve Carlton! He also includes ten modern cardboard hits that cannot be named here, but the particular players included Eddie Murray, Ozzie Smith, George Brett, and my all-time favorite -- Carlton Fisk! Thanks for all the great cardboard! Amazed you could fit it all in one small flat! Ed Schott sends five waiver wire claims for my 1961 Post set -- thanks for offering them up to the group! Father Pat adds two great looking hits for my 1967 Topps set -- glad we could help each other out! Jim Silva sends some oddball cards for my collection, including a 71 Super of Bert Campaneris and two 66 Rub-offs, one of Ken Boyer and the other of Max Alvis! Thanks for three great looking hits! Robert Pigeon adds a tough high number from the 62 Topps set -- the Minnesota Twins team card! Killebrew had 46 home runs in 1961 -- a decent number in most years that could have contended for the home run crown. However, Iseem to recall that a lot of balls were flying out of ball parks in 61..... Thanks for the hit Robert! Tom Housley sends more variations, including some 72 checklist variations, a 73 manager/coach variation with Warren Spahn's ear, a Jesus Alou from 74 w/o his position, and another 74 Washington variation! Thanks for the great group of hits! Bob Bannon adds seven lucky upgrades for my 61 Topps set -- thanks for thinking of me again Bob! Lastly, thanks to EEK and Matt Heilenman for each sending two cards for a recent addition to my wantlist. While I cannot give specifics about the manufacturer or year, I can say that these cards look VERY similar to the old cracker jack cards of the teens. Thanks guys for helping me out! Gotta love these cards!! GRANT RAINSLEY - gives me two 1976 OPC Dodger Cards for that set - makes a total of three I have now - grant sent Charlie Hough and Leron Lee. Also Grant sent along an unbelievable card - a card for the 1962 VENEZUELAN set - Grant's HOM candidate - Billy Hoeft! Really a surprise and pleasure to receive this card. Grant knows how nuts I am about 1962 cards and has sent several KEYS to that set - so here is another. That is all I have to report. I am very grateful - even if I am very late - My life has been very chaotic and I apologize to anyone I have not communicated to - I don't see things slowing down soon - or getting much easier. I have thought about pulling away from OBC for awhile but I would rather not. It is often the one thing that brings me pleasure in a day. Thanks very, very much. And I'd just like to comment about "pinning it to your chest". As a Navy submariner, we have a very old tradition. When someone qualifies to be a submariner, they earn the coveted silver (enlisted) or gold (officer) "dolphins" to signify this event. It is a pin that is worn on the chest of your uniform with your other medals/ribbons that are awards for campaigns or significant individual performance. It is fastened to the uniform with two posts exactly like the ones on the OBC pins. However, the tradition is to "tack on the dolphins" in a ceremony that involves removing the clips and placing the dolphins on your chest (usually with only a t-shirt on because this gets a little messy) and then having your shipmates lineup and with varying degrees of effort, actually tack them to your chest. I do not recall seeing a single Shakey's at the show. Thanks Erik. Thanks & Ramble(s)shall follow in a day or so about the National & Swap Session. The cardboard was flying, & I've got many thanks to pass out - so here goes. Thanks to: SAL DOMINO for handing me a SCP at the show - a 1960 Leaf; TRADER DOUG SMITH, who hands me an envelope with 3 1955 Topps & my first 3 1959 Fleer Ted Williiams; SCOTT "SQUIRREL" EARLE for a 60 Topps, a 54 Topps, & a pair of 83 Topps; MIKE RICH for a couple of cool magazines, and SCP's from 66 & 63, 4 woodies for the birth year set, 6 1958's, and a trio of 1959's; LARRY "GERSH" GERSBACH, who lets me look through his dupes box; I came away with 7 hits to my 1957 set, & SCP's from 1953 Topps 7 1960 Topps. Larry also handed me one of the remaining three 1968 game inserts I needed; JOE ISAAC for a hit to my 54 Bowman list; MARK TALBOT for a 33 Goudey, a 1950 Bowman, a 53 Topps, & 15 Tall Boy basketballers from the 70/71 Topps set; AL CUMMINGS, who kept pulling what seemed an endless supply of early 50's Mother's Cookies cards & flying them across the table at me; also a half-sozen 1965's & a SCP from 1960 Topps; GREG "YAZ" CONWAY for a 62 Post, 4 1955 Topps, & a 53 Topps; STEVE RITTENBERG for some 1973 blue bordered team checklists (stinkin' variations!), 1972 Fleer Famous Feats, an almost complete Reds team set from 83 OPC, 1 54 Red Heart reprint, & a pair of 1942 Play Ball reprints; TIM NEWCOMB, who allows me to raid his dupes binder for a pair of 54 Topps & 4 1956's; SPIKE GLIDDEN for ending the night by allowing me to grab 21 (!) 1957's. Wow JIM HATCH for a 59 Fleer Ted Williams, a pair of 57's & a 1964 coin. Finally, I wrote down that these came from Spike, but some or all may have come from Jim - (they were sitting across from each other & my back was semi-turned when they came flying across the room): SCPs from 53, 56, 57, 58, 60 & 61 Topps sets. (If they came from Jim, Spike handed them to me, so I'll thank both gentlemen, with apologies for my sloppy note-taking). Finally, a huge group thanks to everyone at the swap session. Badabing!! It was a pleasure to attend this year's National in Cleveland and hang out with old and new OBC friends. All throughout the weekend, people were handing me stacks of cards. Thanks go out to the following folks who contributed to my collection...and my sincere apologies if I missed someone - I'm still unpacking :-) Trader Doug Smith (aka 'roomie'): a pair of 1960's and a 1931 Zeenut! Sal Domino: a baker's dozen 1960 Topps hits including and Earl Averill! Peter Mead: a trio of '60 Topps with a Sad Sam Jones. Greg 'Yaz' Conway: another trio of 1960's. Tom Housley: yup...three more 1960 Topps hits! Sanit Al Cummings: two more horizontals! John McLaughlin: five 1960 high numbers! Scott "Squirrel" Earle: three more 1960 including a killer of a Killebrew! Bob Reed: 22 1960's including a Vada Pinson and Joe Adcock! Larry "Gersh" Gersbach: 20 more 1960's including a Master and Mentor Willie Mays card! Mark Talbot: six 1977 Hostess hits, including a Mike Schmidt! Steve Rittenberg: a pair of 1954 Topps hits (both Dodgers) and a neat boxing strip card. I tried to lay low from Steve's radar and thought I was fairly successful until I was at the airport this morning. I arrived at my gate and Spike Glidden (who was also on my flight - more about that in my trip report) handed me a box from Steve. All weekend I was thinking about starting another set since my 1960 list has taken a thorough beating at the hands of OBC. I open the box and inside are 190 (yes - one hundred and ninety) 1962 Topps cards! OK...who let the cat out of the bag?? My goodness, Steve is starting to hit my yet-to-be-created- wantlists!! A few other thank you's of the non-cardboard variety that deserve a more than honorable mention: Bob Reed: for getting us all tix for the (extra inning!) Indians/Royals game on Friday. He even managed to get OBC on the big outfield scoreboard! Ken Morganti: for coordinating the swap session Saturday night. Dealers Kevin Savage and JD Heckathorne (sp?): for sponsoring our swap session, providing funds for a room and a pizza buffet. Trader Doug: for carting me around all around Cleveland. Of course, thanks to one and all for the cool cards and great time. I enjoyed spending the weekend with a fantastic group of people. A full National report is forthcoming, but until then.... FATHER PAT sends along two 1967 cards. One was of a young pitcher with a 3-3 lifetime record and 56 Ks after two seasons. The stats didn't tell much of a good story, but hindsight tells us that Steve Carlton would have some much better days ahead. KEVIN MARTENS sends a trio of '70s stuff my way. Newcomer DAN ANGLAND sends a variety pack...a '77 BK Nettles, a '78 BK checklist card, a '75 RC, a '67 and 2 '64s. Dan has sent me several emails in the past for trades, and I've been letting them get buried in my Inbox...but his persistence is an admirable thing, especially in this group. He'll fit in well here...I just need to see if I can send him something as a way of apologizing for seeming as if I'd been blowing him Finally, I now have the pin I've been reading about since before the National and had the opportunity to see on some OBC hats in Cleveland. It's always a lot more fun when you have someone to share your good deals with and appreciates a tipton gem. Otherwise it would be just another card show. Special thanks are in order for Steve Rittenberg for hooking me up with a dealer badge, parking pass and helping to split the room. Thanks also to Spike Glidden for also helping split the cost of the room and for taking that $40 Ron Dayne card (I know, really) off the poker table. Thanks also to Kent Goto, Steve Rittenberg (again) and Doug Smith for providing transportation over the weekend. Cardboard contributions to my collection came from all over and I never have the foresight to write things down. However, some notables include Sal Domino for finishing off my 1969 set with over a dozen hits. Steve Rittenberg who only occasionally took time off from hitting my list to hit someone else's... he may have hit his own list, but I can't say for sure. Mike Rich, who added a well loved 64 Maris and some posters to the binders. There's also about a half dozen guys who let me raid their dupes boxes for 64's on my list - and I think I found at least one hit in almost every box I checked. I'm not positive, but I think it was Tom Housley's box that yielded the last two cards for my 1974 red checklist variation quest. Finally, Mark Talbot added a hoop hit and an old Goudey Bosox card to my pile. At least those are the contributions that I still semi-remember. THANKS TO EVERYONE!! Awaiting my return home was an envelope from Robert Pigeon containing still more 64's on my ever shortening list and some 69's which became upgrades in some cases. THANKS ROBERT!! Today's mail brought a letter with stamps bearing the Queen. Geno avoided getting shut out on hitting the 64 list by sending a bunch from the higher numbers, most of which were still hits despite my list getting cut in half at the show. THANKS GENO!! For me it was an opportunity to meet and shake the hands of many OBC'ers for the very first time. It was a pleasure to see my old friends Mike Rich, Scott Earle and Ron Perry again, but I was thrilled to meet the following for the first time: Greg and Wade Comway, Al Cummings, Sal Domino, Larry Gerschbach, Spike Glidden, Kent Goto, Jim Hatch, Tom Housley, Joe Issac, John Leroux, Ken Morganti, Tim Newcomb, Bob Reed, Steve Rittenberg, Doug Smith and Chris Stufflestreet. It was true what everyone says, the meeting was like a group of "old friends" that had known each other forever. Of course when I walked in to the swap and announced myself and someone shouted "hey who told HIM about it", I knew I was in for a spirited evening. I brought my daughter Kendall and niece Rosie along as we were camping about 30 miles away and everyone was very kind to the both of them, thanks for that fellas!!! I met Wade Conway (Greg's son) who introduced himself as Al Cummings and we all had a great laugh. As I made my way throughout the room talking with so many who I have only known through cyberspace and the U.S.P.S. it was nice to be handed various items for my collection. I would like to acknowledge the following: Jim Hatch was apologetic to only have a SCP for me. My eyes opened wide to spy a W514 strip card of Oscar Stange of the home-town Tigers. It's a tiptonesque sample that will look perfect in my pre-war collection. So no need to apologize Jim - I love it - Thanks. Tim Newcomb allows me to sift through a stack of pre-war stuff where I claim (2) T-205's with Robert Bescher and David Shean as well as a T-206 card of William Malony. I was speechless!!! Tim later shared some information on a Canadian issue of "Wide-Pens" with Doug, Mike, Spike and myself. Quite interesting but I'm still not sure how to identify the Canadian issued cards as compared to there American counterparts. Fortunately I don't really have to worry about it since my wide-pen collection is so sparse. Thanks Tim for the lesson and the cards. Bob Reed gave me a `69 variation card of Ron Perranowski w/LA insignia showing through the airbrushing, a `76 Kellogg's card of Jerry Reuss, (6) `80-81 Topps Basketball "Trio's", a coupe of `54 archive cards and some UV with McGuire, Shilling and A-Rod. Very nice of you Bob!!! Mike Rich always has a few for me and this occasion was no different. For my HOM'er binder a `69 Topps stamp of hero Norm Cash and an "oddball" Al Kaline issue from Jimmy Dean Sausage (date withheld to protect the vintage conscience). As always - Thanks Mike. Finally, Steve Rittenberg lives up to his reputation as being one of the most generous OBC'er around. Steve must of had 20 boxes of stuff and it seemed he had something for everyone. I came away with a plastic box filed with (25) hits to the `77-78 Topps Basketball grey back quest including Gross RC, Grevey RC, Carr, Issel, Dantley RC, Thompson, Lanier, Unseld, Washington RC, Lucas, Adams, Murphy, Jones, Malone, and Kuchak RC. Steve also let me select (4) `73 Fleer Wildest Plays cards for my collection, he handed me a T-218 Hassan back variation of Harry Haywood, a SCP `56 Topps Flag card of Paraguay, and a `55 Topps Football card of Frank Merritt. Finally, Steve dealer scumed me a deal for my first T-218 golfer, delivering Findley Douglas. Thank you so much for your generosity Steve and more importantly it was great to finally meet you for the first time. I would also like to thank Ken for setting up the swap, John for the excellent directions, Mike for continually taking my calls throughout the weekend, Sal for the list of attendees, Kevin Savage and J.D. for springing for the cost of the swap meet and finally all those who attended with their stories and cardboard to share with my daughter, niece and myself. I would like to thank: Bob Farrell who finds a `66 Topps SCP for me a splendid HI numbered card of Chico Salmon. Thanks Bob!!! John Scott Grey sends me a SCP from the `63 card set, another HI number specimen - this time it's HOF'er Duke Snider. This is the ultra-rare 8 corner version with "Mays on his mind". Thanks so much JSG - I will get off-centered here and get return fire out ASAP. Finally, Neal Thomas surprises me with another HI numbered SCP, this one comes from the `55 Bowman TV edition and I am pleased to cross off Jim Lemon from my list thanks to Neal. Way to go buddy. I hope the summer finds all enjoying the time with your families restful and relaxing. The Talbot clan will be leaving for our annual week at Church Family Camp on the 8th and then it's back to the full time grind at work. So I will be doing my best in the week to come to "catch-up" with my hobby interest. Hope to get a few packages out and answer emails that have been piling up. BE WELL!!! Hello All, I would like to thank everyone at the swap meet that showed such kindness to my daughter Kendall and niece Rosie. Kendall was excited to meet more of my OBC friends and you guys made her feel very much at home. Many of you hit Kendall with animal cards with either Hassan or Red Rose Tea cards but I would like to especially thank Steve Rittenberg who gave Kendall a stack of cards that were cut from some sort of packaging, perhaps cereal cards. There were (34) cards in all and if Steve could provide additional information perhaps I might even be able to identify them. Nonetheless my daughter was so pleased, she read them all and started to write Steve a thank you note. It may be some time before she finishes but I wanted all to know of Steve's generosity again. Thanks Steve. Another set of thanks to Mike Rich who spent some of his swap time entertaining both the girls. As I told Mike personally it's great to have another set of eyes on the kids who really cares for them. Thanks Mike you are a true friend. Be Well!!! Hello All, A package was sent to my daughter Kendall while we were camping and she opened it up tonight. It came from Jim Wiehe and was chock full of interesting stuff for Kendall. First Jim sent a detailed note which explained to Kendall (and her Dad) exactly what he was sending her. Jim sent Kendall (23) Arbuckle Coffee cards of Animals and of Cooking Subjects (also animals). These cards are from 1890 and 1898 respectively and Kendall was taken by their beauty and unique quality. They are almost the size of postcards and quite unusual - Kendall loves them Jim. We should thank Steve Rittenberg for sending these to you in the first place Jim and your willingness to share them with my daughter. Thanks Jim and Steve. I have updated Kendall's list and I have begun a new list for her cousin Rosie who are both now collecting various cards. You can see their lists at: KENDALL'S LIST ROSIE'S LIST Jim also included "goodies" for yours truly. Taken from his own collection Jim sends me a couple of "hard series" `63 Topps cards with Norm Sieburn and Tony Cloninger. Then Jim adds an autographed Matt Anderson card, a former Tiger relief pitcher who is now pitching for the Mud Hens of Toledo. Also included were (8) Topps cards that look like `53's but there not and (4) additional UV cards. You got both Kendall and I smiling tonight Jim - Thanks So Much!!!! BE WELL!!!
