A 47 Homogenized Bond Bread "Stan the Man"!! I'm glad he decided to visit it again. Thanks again Mike for another truly amazing card you have blessed me with. Ed sent me another great Hank item. A 1971 book about Hank. I have quite a few books on him but not this particular one. So thanks Ed for an opportunity to read more about Hank and hopefully learn something I maybe didn't know before about my hero. An added note. I or eBay lost my "About Me" page when they went over to this new My eBay page. Like an idiot I didn't save it in a file recently. My "saved" file is a little out of date. If anyone happened to copy my WL recently, could you send me a copy. Otherwise I will try to reconstruct it to the best of my memory. I had help in the beginning building it in HTML format for eBay from Mark Talbot, I believe. But I'm not sure I want to do that again and may just post it back in the OBC directory after I get it finished. Three packages from OBC brethren grace the mailbox (well, in one case the doorstep) today. First, SCOTT EARLE sends an SCP from the perfect set for a guy like me who fixes cable TV...the 1955 Bowman set! The "reception" is a little fuzzy but it doesn't matter to me! MIKE WIERZBICKI sends along two '54 Bowmans (including the second to last card in the set) that were chat room waivers, and tosses in 4 from '80 including John Candelaria. All six cards are of pitchers. Do I sense a theme here? Finally, JIMI THAYER sends along an 800-ct. box. Inside are a post-OBC "unmentionable" complete Topps set that happens to have the RCs of one Hall of Famer (Puckett) and two future enshrinees (Clemens and McGwire)...and Oil Can Boyd, too! To join these cards, he sends along two vintage cards that just floored me. Both are card #50, and both were the first cards I still needed for their respective sets. The are '72 Mays IA and '73 Clemente! Wow... Thanks for the great stuff, guys! Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. One was the '71 Jim Hickman. Interesting story is The Hick. Big, strong dude, decent outfielder, would occasionally hit one a mile for the early Mets, but seemed to be done when he went to the Dodgers, who farmed him out in 1967 at age 30. Apparently, he went back to the minors with a purpose, learned the strike zone, was a good player for the Cubs for several years afterward.....including the monster season of 1970 shown on the '71 Kelloggs. A .235 lifetime hitter up to that point, who'd have expected a .315 season, with 32 homers, 115 rbi and 93 walks! I love this game. JIM BEAUCHEMIN sends a near set of 82 Kelloggs. Ya, its post-1980 but I'm using the "1982 Kelloggs are included in the vintage section of the SCD" And I'm saving the best package for last. JOEL FREEDMAN had been talking to me about the "t" word. I finally convinced him to have some faith in the "what goes around comes around philosophy" and send me some stuff without prior arrangement. Joel has gone beyond all expectations with this package. I've been hoping for an OBC hero to send me the really easy stuff on my list: 1980 Topps checklist, 1980 Blue Jays card and 1968 O's team card. All three were going to be on my "top 10 easiest cards to find" list. Joel sent ALL THREE. Each finishes up a year for me!!!! Plus he sent three cards for my Red Sox team set from the 1970 & 1971 Fleer World Series cards. He included three cards for Joe Greco, a 70 common and 2 65 Leaders, each with Willie Mays. There is also a 78 Kelloggs Tanana, 51 Bowman common and a 54 Bowman Don Larsen. Man, has anyone gotten more milage out of one game than Don Larsen? But I digress. Joel was not done. There is also a team bag stuff with Red Sox UV cards. Joel has more than demonstrated his OBC spirit with this package but he still needs to learn that most of us only want cards in crappy shape! My computer is six years old, they won't have anything to do with me, I'm on my own. Another call to AOL, they suggest I take it in and have it checked out at a computer fix-it place. Holiday weekend, everything is closed till Tuesday the 2nd. Tuesday I bring it in, explain the problem. Fix-it guy says it will be one to three days they'll have her fixed. This is Tuesday the 8th, fix-it guy says it'll be ready tonight or tomorrow morning. Fortunately, I could borrow my daughter's laptop so I could keep up with email. The two new arrivals are from Mike Rich and Steve Rittenberg. The older envelope is from Ken Goetsch. Steve somehow coerced a collector over in Jasonville, IN to send a couple cards from a set that I started about a year before I joined OBC - which means that it probably belongs on another (read: UV) server. Still, I appreciate the effort. Steve is making it his personal mission (among many others I'd guess) to completely rid my list of all the UV sets on it - and he's been making steady progress over the last couple years. THANKS STEVE!! Mike Rich spotted a couple oddballs on my list and sent over two posters from 1970. One poster (Niekro) is from Mike's boyhood collection and shows signs of being taped to a wall (and removed with some parts still adhered to that wall). The other poster (Horlen) is almost two posters... I probably would've been better off if Mike had taped that one to the wall too :-) THANKS MIKE!! The last package came in a couple weeks ago and had some hat money from Ken Goestch. I speculated (B.S.'ed)about it and then commented on the sorry state of my '63 collection...I had 500 cards left to get, had two hi #s and no 5th series JSG had the RX for that problem, and prescribed card #513 of Gary Geiger to ease that ailment. Not only have I finally broken the 500 mark on my '63 wantlist, I have some other cards to add. JSG joined that card with a '74 Alou, a '77 Nolan (Joe Nolan, not the OTHER pitcher you might have thought) and cut my '76 wantlist in half with 13 of the 25 cards I needed, including Catfish, Luzinski, Honus and the Big Train. Unfortunately, due to work, life or other circumstances, the get together was limited to John,Scott Earle, Mark Talboit (with OBC honorary member Kendall Talbot) and myself. After finally getting my car out of the garage (ramble to follow possibly), I finally made it to the mall card show where John and Scott were. Mark met up with us later at the Toledo Mud Hens game. The mall show consisted of 3 dealers. Not 3 vintage dealers, 3 dealers. I was so late, John wanted to leave immediately for teh Med Hen game, however, I stalled and looked at 1 dealer's table. He had all sorts of great vintage stuff at reasonable (not cheap, but reasonable) prices. I bought a few items, including finishing my 1960 Nu Card Scoops set with the #438 Dimaggio the highlite. Scott presented me a UV pacakge of Red Wings for my nephew and Post BB for me. John gave me a great stack including a 1955 Topps Doubleheader, 3 1961 Topps Stamps, including Klu and Podres, 3 1964 Wheaties stamps, a set of 1986 Fleer Star Stickers, finishing another set of 1977 Dairy Isle Discs with Foster and John's own HOMer, Fidrych, some 1963 Topps Stick-ons and a bun ch of gorgeous shape Detroit Tigers from 1962 & 1963 for my buddy Rocky whom John has met at a previous FOOT get together. A Wally Westlake punched hole variation (you can always spot those kids who had a paper route) and a Curt Roberts. Thanks Bob. I'm a little late with my thanks and FOOT report, but it's been a little hectic latley. Our Foot gathering started off with a wimper and ended with a bang. I got to the mall early thinking Scott (Squirrel) would allready be there and I wasn't sure if he had a OBC hat or not. The show was even more of a flop then I expected with all of four dealers, one of which packed up and left before Scott or Mike arrived. Fortunately, there was one dealer who had a good selection of stuff. He turned out to be quite friendly and I managed, with his help to find a few more things to add to my meager offerings to the group. After a little while I noticed a fellow with a OBC hat. I have to say, OBC has the best recruiting system in the country. Our scouts bring in the best of the best and that definitely applies to Scott. Scott and I exchanged some cardboard and I recieved much help to my '76 and '79 Topps sets, plus a couple of newer sets. He also mentioned that there would be something else later, that I might like... Thanks Scott, but the real pleasure was meeting and spending the day with a new friend. The first call came in from Mike, he'd been doing battle with his garage door and would be arriving late, he inquired about directions and since he was driving down I-75 I turned him over to Scott since he had just driven that very route and could give Mike the latest info. A few minutes later I got a call from Earl (EEK). Earl had planned to make it along with his son, but a last minute swimming pool problem kept Earl from making the trip. We all missed you Earl. Mike arrived finally and we exchanged some more cardboard, with Mike handing me a pack of cards that contained '76 Topps NL Strikeout Leaders (Seaver, Montefusco, Messersmith), '79's with AL Leading Firemen (Gossage/Fingers) a Gary Carter and Denny Martinez. And a couple from the '80T set you may remember, Eckersley and Pete Rose. Thanks Mike. We made it to the game in plenty of time but we had to get standing room only tickets, which was alright anyway as we stood along the leftfield fence and watched the game between baseball card stories and other chit-chat. Like all OBC meetings, you would think we were all life long friends. I think it was about the third inning when Mark Talbot arrived and I had the pleasure of meeting his daughter and niece. Mark's daughter, Kendall presented me with a 1955 card of Jim Rivera. Very nice Kendall, thank you. I've been looking for some animal cards for you, and I did manage to find a little something, I hope it will be ok, they're actually playing cards and there are some nice stickers I think you'll enjoy. Of course Mark had an exceptionally generous stack of cardboard that he gave me. He almost wiped out my '77 Topps with 35 cards a '65 Frank Howard, five of the embossed inserts from the '65 set that takes that set down to 10, and a 1950 Bowman, Virgil Trucks card that has been on my want list forever. Thanks Mark. It was truely a great night, good company, a good game and after the seventh inning Mark scouted out some empty seats right behind the dugout where we watched the Mud Hens win the game in the 13th inning with a two run blast by Marcus Thames, which was the second two run homer he hit that night. And that was the bang that I refered to in the beginning of this little report that brought it all to an end. Scott left his car at his inlaws and road with me to the game, so when I got him home he went in and got the gift to be named later. That turned out to be something special indeed. Scott had two Detroit Tiger's Opening Day baseball's. He said he has held onto the second ball since 1977 waiting for something special to do with it. He presented it to me. Thanks again Scott. I'll be getting a ball cube to hold it in and it will be displayed proudly along with my autographed Mark Fidrych ball. All, I just got back from two weeks vacation with the significant other and my sister. We had a great trip trekking thru South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, Deadwood, Chief Crazy Horse Memorial, up to Montana to Little Bighorm Battlefield Memorial, over to Wyoming to see Yellowstone National Park and the Grand down to Jackson Hole and then to Colorado hiking in some of the great parks - Garden of the Gods, shopping in Vail, riding trains - Royal Gorge and the Georgetown Loop, a night of gambling at some casino called - Fountain Valley in Central City, and then to Denver to visit with relatives. Pretty much of a full agenda did get a chance to stop and chat with cardshop owner in Sheridan, Wy. Unfornunately he nothing but UV stuff of which I had no interest in but we had a nice chat anyway as he was a bowler and had just come back from the ABC National tournie. Well, enough rambling thanks out to the following: Lynn Miller - who keeps putting dents into my 52T wantlist with 118,132,142,146,150,160, and 161. Anthony Arbeeny - who sent two football cards - notably a Mr. Dick Butkus 72T who was one of my favorite Bear linebackers and another Bear 71T #78 Andy Cook - sends along 52T Dodger #66 Preacher Roe. Joel Freedman - sends some 74Ts - #251 Nettles, #474 73WS Game #3, and #646 George Foster. Doug Chamberlain - sends a 53T #115 Spencer. Brian Lindholme - sends two Cardinals to take off my 51B wantlist. Bob Donalson - sends a 1970 -71T hockey card of some St. Louis Blues guy by the name of Red Berenson. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase "ERA leaders of the 1970s"? Do you think of Gloria Steinam and Bella Abzug? Does the song "I Am Woman" pop into your head? If so, you've joined the wrong group. For baseball fans, Vida "True" Blue and Steve "Press Corps" Carlton would be a much better answer. New OBC member DAN ANGLAND from my native state of New York sends three cards to hit my very short 1970s wantlists...a '74 of Lefty, a '77 Blue and a '78 Billy Martin find their way to the mailbox today. Thanks to Dan, I am down to 18 for all '74s including variations, 15 for the '77 set and just three for '78...Munson, Bostock and Molitor's RC. And for those of you humming that stupid Helen Reddy song, sorry. Perhaps "Ruby Red Dress" would have been a better suggestion? Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards.
