Hello All The cards are all over the office as I plow through plenty of eBay packages and a number of offerings from the following fine traders: Bob Bard sends a Topps Hobby Master Jeter card from 1997. He said I asked for it, so I guess 'm collecting the subset. Thanks Bob!!! Friar Bob Corvello hits two yet unpublished lists with (9) `81 Dunross cards, (7) `81 Fleer cards, (5) cards from a Baseball Immortals set that I have a few of around here somewhere. Bob also includes a `56 Topps back variation of Tom Carroll and a Scratch off of Luis Aparicio. Bob is the first to send me `81 Dunross and Fleer cards, later today these still unpublished want lists will make it to my want list. I guess it's time to start "reclaiming" those lost years in the early `80's. Who knows - it just might generate some trading. Thanks Bob for the introductory hits. John Leroux from out of the blue sends out (2) hits to the 2002 Topps Heritage set. This set has not seen action in months and to get Marlon Byrd (Hi #) and Albert Pujols (CR5) in the same mailing was twice as nice. Thanks John!!! Kevin Martens uncovers (6) UD Legends from 2001 to hit another of those sets that don't see much action. Williams, Edmonds, Kent, Wilson, Giles and Helton all are safely tucked away so I appreciate your effort Kevin. Thanks to these fine traders and all who make these trading groups so much fun. While I was there, I ran into a few familiar faces and got to sit down and chat with Peter Mead, Steve Rittenberg, Rob Gioia and Matt Heilenman (I think that's everyone). A couple guys even handed me cards at or at the now traditional post-show restaraunts (chinese on Friday and pizza on Saturday). Thanks to all the aforementioned guys for the pleasure of their company. My first cardboard thanks go to Peter Mead, who finally hands me a card he said he'd trade to me about a year ago. The Dr. J RC to finish off that set. I hope my end of the deal was OK. HUGE THANKS PETER!! Steve Rittenberg continually hands me cards ...I was going to make a comment about that, but I'm not sure what to say - or why I would have a problem with that activity in the first place :-) Anyway, Steve found a few Ted Williams cards for my set plus some 64's at the swap on Saturday. I was also fortunate to buy a few high numbers at a good price from the DS box. THANKS STEVE!! Rob Gioia also pitched in with the 1964 effort with a SCP checklist in exchange for the one measly card I was able to give him. THANKS ROB!! My return home yesterday was uneventful and I wasn't greeted by any leftover cards in the mail. That's because I had the mailman hold it until today. I was bombarded with 64's. One was an eBay purchase and four envelopes from OBC arrived to shatter my wantlist. The largest puffy came from Brock Hattox. Brock sent over about three dozen cards including a McCovey that he wisely put into a semi-rigid holder so I wouldn't cut myself on the corners. THANKS BROCK!! Dr. John Scott Gray batters the 64 list as well with ove a dozen and a half cards stuffed very economically into a long but very thick envelope. The group was highlighted by a couple team cards, as well as Hank Bauer and "The Monster". THANKS JSGtY!! George Vrechek gives me a breath of fresh air and a break from the barrage of 64's by sending a SCP hit to the variation list in the form of a red team checklist. This is the last version I needed with one '*' THANKS GEORGE!! The final envelope comes from Neal Thomas. The return address label has a very cool Red Sox logo on it. The inside had a half dozen very cool 64's, including Mauch and a couple boys named Williams (Billy and Dick). THANKS NEAL!! Time to sort out, cross off and organize a couple hundred cards. Thanks! A baseball note from the weekend: touring the Somerville, MA, artist's Open Studios this weekend, I met an artist who was recently commisioned to create a painting of Jewish baseball stars for the Newton Jewish Community Center. Much of his studio was dedicated to the work going into this piece, which included several sketch studies, pictures of the players, and the canvas itself. (He's a big Sox fan himself.) The painting will show Koufax, Rosen, and Greenberg with Leopold Bloom, the (Jewish) protagonist of James Joyce's Ulysses. Leopold is holding a ball and they're placed somewhat like a conference on the mound. The painting should be finished later this year and I signed up to be notified on the opening date. I'll post a note when it happens and hopefully there will be an image online, it should be quite a piece. We talked about the players for a while and he mentioned Moe Berg. Moe was Jewish, but apparently didn't have to endure the kind of anti-Semitism the other three handled. Maybe it was his low profile (good for his later spy work, no doubt), but as significant as he was to the country, the artist decided not to include him in the painting because of its emphasis on Jewish observance and playing through adversity. There was an interesting quote about Flip in his studio. Apparently, a writer in the early 50s wrote a piece that included an affirmation of Flip's Catholicism! He responded angrily, saying something like, "I wish my name were Rosenfeld or Rosenberg so there wouldn't be any question." Hi gang, Today I got a package from Larry Gersbach containing a bunch of 64's from Larry's childhood collection. Even after the flurry of activity on that list, I still needed most of them. The few that were no longer on my list were also welcomed. Despite coming from a 13 year-old's collection, most weren't as well loved as some of their counterparts in my set. THANKS GERSH!! Also, belated thanks to Steve (a friend of mine who took the trip to Ft. Washington this weekend). I grew up with Steve, who lived a little farther down the street and we used to have swap sessions almost every day with a couple other guys in the neighborhood. The trip down to Ft. Washington was a little nostalgic for me and even though the drive was a lot longer than it should've been, it was good to reminisce about the good old days. As we left Everett, we passed by the local card shop, which I never visit because of the high prices. I was going to joke about stopping in there before we got to the interstate, but didn't say anything. Steve called me up late Sunday after he had gotten home and casually mentions to me "Oh yeah, there was a 1961 Mantle in Sportsworld for twenty bucks. I don't know why I didn't mention it sooner." "TWENTY DOLLARS!?!? We drove right by there!" "Yeah it's the one where he's holding the bat... it's got a few creases in it, but I thought you might like it. I probably should've picked it up, huh?" Now I've known Steve for over twenty years and on the way home he was telling me about how I should get a cell phone because I travel so much and it would come in handy in case of an emergency... I should've scolded him about how a 61 Mantle for $20 qualifies as a cardboard emergency and he should have my number on speed dial to remedy the situation immediately - where was his cell phone then? He calls me up at all hours of the day for every other reason (usually it's his lunch break, which happens to coincide with the middle of my nap). "I saw it there a day or two before we left. I hope he didn't sell it over the weekend." (This is where I try to squash the mental image of me strangling Steve after discovering the card sold). Anyway, after driving as fast as legally possible across Everett, I did indeed find a 1961 Topps Mantle #300 for sale at twenty US dollars (plus 5% state sales tax). I also managed to pick up a decent looking T205 with a Polar Bear back for an additional ten dollars... not too bad either. Not sure of what the future holds for The Mick, which looks like it went through the laundry... a couple times. Just wanted to tell you guys about the best deal I got this weekend, even tohugh it wasn't at the three day show I attended. For many cards in my collection, there is a story behind their acquisition that I can recite like it just happened yesterday. This type of thing really makes the hobby enjoyable for me: besides the player on the card and the information on the backs, I can sometimes recall tidbits of trivia or other memories that for some reason seem to stick in my head. Sometimes I can't remember to wear a belt when I go to work in the morning, but I can remember many stories of my cards with pretty good Since my acceptance into OBC, the stories behind the cards have become more and more frequent. Over the years I have saved some of the letters and notes that come with the seemingly endless stream of mailbox surprises. The latest trip down memory lane comes from Peter Mead. Peter sends along a priceless six-pack of 1971 Topps hits. The funny thing is that I only need three cards. How can this be?? I'm glad you asked! All three cards left on my 1971 Topps list are rookie cards - the examples with three players on them. Peter (with an assist from Steve Rittenberg) finds two of the three cards I need for the set (a Cubs RC and an NL RC w/Bill Buckner!) - each cut cleanly into thirds! Peter notes that these are "Mead originals" and that he and his brothers used to cut these cards so they would have enough players to make a team. Peter: I don't know if I can enjoy these as much as you and your brothers did, but I'm sure gonna try! Of course I will enjoy the cards, but now I have a truly priceless OBC story to tell which is what I enjoy at least as much as the cards. The cards and your note will reside in my set for the duration. Many thanks for the super incoming Peter! Happy Collecting! ================= To: Date: Sun, 9 May 2004 09:53:06 -0500 From: "Randy G. The good Father sends a bounty from a recent chat room: 3 nice hits to my 1967 set, including Roger Maris, Ralph Houk, & the "green bat" variation of Paul Schaal. Fr. Pat includes a note telling me his 1967 set is down to 62 needed, most of which are high numbers. Well, with this recent arrival, my 1967 set is also down to 62 needed, most of which are high numbers. How's that for a coincidence?? Yes...OBC's resident fugitive is on the lam again, running roughshod over the wantlists of unsuspecting members. I was the victim today, as RICHARD KIMBALL sends nine OBC-quality cards from 1960-'68 to forcibly make thier way into my collection. Favorite card...1967 #190, Turk Farrell of the Astros. While one of the only Topps issues of the 1960s that actually refers to the players as "Astros" and not "Houston ballclub players," this one has a neat little bit of info . Seems Turk held the record at that point for most wins by an Astro pitcher -- 52. However, a little quick math shows that his numbers in the "L" column add up to 64. Mike's right, some things are better not said, but i'm sure I didn;t see any of them anyway. Mike is an incredible host. The ribs are spectacular, the friendship wonderful. Judy and I arrived with Judy's clothes and my golf clubs, but my clothes (and cards) were nowhere to be found. I was afraid I would have to spend the weekend in a dress, but the clothes were at the hotel by the end of ribfest. Cards fly, as usual. Most of the guys are getting pretty organized, so they fly in premade packages. Here are my thanks, with apologies to anyone if I get it wrong: thanks to George Hay for 10 1960 Topps, to Rex Stahlman for 14 1961 Topps, To Joe Cerullo for a Fine Pen Sam Byrd, to Ken Morganti for a 61T Brooks Robinson and an 80T Jim Rice, to Joel Glickman for a really cool Vegas 04 pin, to Peter Iverson for a 61Topps that he miraculously found after a emptied his dups box a couple months ago, to Josh Levine for a 59T, 2 62T's, 1 60T, and 4 61T's, to Larry Gershbach for 3 62T's, and to Todd Knowles for a cool post card of Carl Yastrzemski. As usual the best part of the weekend was the unique friendship of a bunch of people of all ages and completely different professions who meet mostly on the internet but get along so incredibly well. The golf tournament was in incredible success ... won as usual by Team Hair. Uniquely, infamous OBC golfer Rick Ellison was on Mike's team, marking the first time Rick has ever been on a winning team. The win was marked by an anterisk*, but the reasons probably ought to stay in Las Vegas. Was the Geno Wagner longest drive contest won by Joe Cerullo, whose 40 yard drive was in the fairway? Or Ken Morganti, whose 270 yard drive was in the first cut? Or was it the fairway? the answer stayed in Vegas. Team Smith of Smith, Luurs, Hay, and Cerullo was handicapped by their captain but played good enough to win except for a half dozen putts that lipped out. A great time was had by all. The Morganti Challenge was won in come from behind fashion by none other than me. 32 putts on the front nine seemed to put me out of the running, but a spectacular 21 on the back pushed me into the lead? Not sure, actually. I was tied with Rex Stalhman at 53 I thought. Went to return the putters, and was announced the winner on my return. Another asterisked* victory? Did I win because the prize, a Salt Lake Stingers tee shirt, provided by Glenn Codere I think, was too small for Rex? The answer remains in Las Vegas. We skipped the ball game and instead had a wonderful dinner with George and Lucy and Joel, highlighted no doubt by me explaining the virtues of Fox news (that better stay in Vegas too). We'd planned on seeing Celine Dion but she cancelled. Oh well, the dinner was better. By the time I got to the card show at the mall my OBC friends had pretty well bought them out. Josh bought the bargain of the century. I'd best let him tell that story. We stopped by Hooters for the closing lunch but stayed only long enough to say goodbye. We had an afternoon flight back and Vegas still hasn't figured out airport security. Thanks to everyone, particularly Mike, for making Vegas04 a great event. Al should arrive shortly. - Doug ================= To: Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 10:06:11 -0500 From: "Greg \(yaz\)" Subject: income Spike Glidden sends along a 1970 High # Pete Ward. JSG (the younger) and Lynn Miller, and thanks for a package this week from the one and only Spike Glidden. JSG sends a tremendous SCP -- a '53 Bowman mini of Hank Sauer. Four sharp corners, no creases, no white border to take away from the stunning Kodachrome color photo... great card! John gently prodded me to set a good example as a mentor and update my wantlist and I'll work on trying to do that within the week (it's also part of the PC to Mac transfer that is going less than smooth). Thanks a ton, John!! Lynn's package blew me away (as usual)... a '65 Rookie Stars of Masanori Murakami which fills in the hole in my set from when I gave Sarah mine (and told her about the first Japanese MLB player!). Then there was a '66 A.L. Strikeout Leader card featuring Sudden Sam McDowell, Mickey Lolich, Denny McLain and Sonny Siebert. Next was a pair of '69s, including Le Grande Orange, Canadian HOFer Rusty Staub and one of those cool trophy cards of Stan Bahnsen. Not wanting to stop at a package that would have been awesome with just those, Lynn continued searching and tossed in a half dozen '70s... five of which are from the high series!!!! This is the first hit on that set in nearly a year. Then he tosses in another five black beauties... two high numbers, one semi-high and then a couple of pretty good hitters... Billy Williams and Al Kaline!!! WOW!!! Along with all the cards was an index card that at first I thought was just used for packaging but upon flipping it over, I found that it was an autograph of Bibb Falk, one of my favorite players of all times! For those of you who haven't seen him listed on my way-too-long wantlist, before Bibb became the long-time coach for the Texas Longhorns (he's the Falk in Disch-Falk Field), he had the formidable task of filling in the shoes of Shoeless Joe Jackson! Bibb played from 1920-28 with the White Sox and then 3 more years with the Indians, compiling a lifetime .314 batting average, with 1463 hits, 785 RBIs, but a mere 69 home runs. Certainly not Shoeless Joe, but not bad either! I had the thrill of meeting Mr. Falk at an alumni game, unfortunately about a year before I learned of his major league background. Nevertheless, I did get to talk with him, get the all-important hand shake (I'm a little like Josh in that regard) but also got him to sign my game program. The signature is almost an exact match for the lovely one on the card that Lynn sent, with Lynn's having a fancier "F" in the last name. My guess is that it's a lot easier signing an index card when you're younger than standing up when your 86 years old. This will be perfect for a display I someday want to put together for my den. All I need now is the old Sporting News I saw once that had "Falk Replaces Shoeless Joe" in the headlines (why oh why didn't I buy it then???). Anyway, a major-league sized thanks to Mr. Miller for such an incredible package. Final thanks of the day goes out to Spike, who brightened my day earlier this week with a terrific package of three beautiful '71s and a well loved '53 Bowman of Karl Drews that will remain well-loved. Fantastic package... thanks a bunch, Spike!! Well all, thanks again for the fantastic cardboard, fun stories, and friendship... doesn't get any better than that. The new job at WLEV in Bethlehem is going swell. My new partner starts Monday. It'll be "Rick & Kelly in the Morning". Deb is still in Kansas trying to sell the house and get a job here. When she was here for a visit, we put a contract on a house. It'll be tough if we don't sell the one before we close on the other, but we're gonna go for it. The message subject refers to the Thanx that I owe to some of my great pals in OBC. On my way through PA, I yanked my U-haul trailer up to KENT MONTGOMERY's house in Washington for a quick visit...and I do mean quick. But Kent was even quicker to offer a cool beverage and a 1960 Topps Johnny Callison gem. He's also made efforts to use his influence to get Deb a job...a much-appreciated iron in our fire. Thank you Kent!! Then JOE ISSAC came to the Lehigh Valley for a holiday visit, and we managed to get together for a unique OBC-Live rendezvous (..see Joe's message below). Joe handed over a Phillies 1980 World Series program...but only after he held it behind his back and delivered a tantalizing preamble. It was so OBC-ish...and cool. Thanks Joe! Now, I understand SPIKE GLIDDEN delivered a major hit to my Rose Hill KS address. Deb descibed it to me as "..a little square one of a Phillies guy named Bob Miller". Sounds like a 1950 Bowman #227 to me! Good shootin' Spike!! I wish I had more OBC time. When things settle down a little, I will. You guys are the greatest!! Thanx...Rick Svetecz...The Biggest Phillies Fan in my mom's dining room Message: 9 Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2004 08:31:45 -0400 From: "Joe Isaac" Subject: OBC gathering in Bethlehem PA Came back from a long Easter weekend from Easton, PA. I had the pleasure to meet one of our own, Rick Svetecz, on Saturday. I remember about a month ago on the ramblings server that Rick mentioned he moved back to Bethlehem and is staying with his mom. I grew up in Easton, the neighboring city to the east of Bethlehem. Rick and I met in Bethlehem, just minutes from his home. Fighting the traffic, I found a parking spot and called Rick. Turned out he was just minutes behind me, but he was also fighting traffic to get to the mad house known as Walmart on the day before Easter Sunday. Anyway, there I was, waiting in front of Walmart wearing the white and blue hat when I see this white SUV approach me, the guy also wearing the white and blue hat pointing at me. At least I knew Rick from the pics on his site (sans moustache). I walked up and greeted Rick as he was getting out of his SUV. Finally, I met the "The Biggest Phillies Fan on the interstate"!! I went back to my SUV to get my gift for Rick. I mentioned that 1980 was a good year, especially for the Phillies Fans, and handed over the 1980 WS yearbook. Pretty exciting to see the Biggest Phillie Fan all giddy over the yearbook to add to his collection. Rick handed me a couple birthyear hits, they were of the same guy with the green tint version (oh no, I guess I'm collecting the green tints now, thanks pal!) and some nice looking 55s. Thanks a bunch Rick! I had the pleasure to see the Johnny Callison collection, tons of photos, oddball stuff and cards, half of them were autographed by the man himself who Rick knows pretty well. To see this impressive collection, Rick opened the back doors of the SUV and there we were sitting in the back in the middle of the Walmart parking lot making sure my foot was not run over by passing cars and admiring the Johnny collection. Some of the places Rick mentioned brought back childhood memories - in fact, when I mentioned about the V7, "yeah, we used to go there all the time for minature golf and hit golf balls" Rick said. When I told him my house was just a block from the V7, I probably ran into a future OBCer a long time ago and didn't even know!! A pretty horrendous shank from the tee would probably hit my house, as I used to see many golf balls in the streets after a busy day. The days of the $1 seats at the Roxy Theater to see Rush, Golden Earring are long gone, same as the Whizz (I hope I got that right, Rick correct me if I'm wrong) for the best cheese steaks in the area - I still say it's Geno's and Pat's in We talked for about 2 hours (boy was it a nice day for a change) when it was time to leave. Some great quality time spent with another fellow OBCer. On my next trip to the area, I have to make sure I listen to FM 100.7 in the morning to hear Rick Edwards (a.k.a. Rick Svetecz). Good luck to you Rick, hope Deb and the kids make it to Bethlehem soon, and it sure was a pleasure to meet ya! Mike Wierzbicki sends a 1970 high number of Frank Tepedino, a 1954 Bowman of Lou Kretlow, and a couple of 1978 Hostess Twinkies Peter Mead sends three more 1961 Scoops, noting that they are low grade. I'd say they are above average grade when compared to the rest of my set. Steve Rittenberg sends a bunch of late 60's and early 70's OPC Hockey, and my sets are getting very close to completion. As I type this note, I am watching the Stanley Cup Finals on ABC. Bob D'Angelo also chips in a few 1970's Hostess. I've got a pile of dupes if anyone else is putting together these sets. Ray Luurs sends some 1953 Redmans around the time of my birthday a few weeks ago. Lynn Miller sends six hits from 1951, 1952, and 1954 Bowman baseball everyone a pitcher including Sid Hudson, and Vern Bickford. Spike Glidden: I was also Spiked with a bunch of 1972 and 1973 OPC Baseball. Thanks to all of the above. I was able to find wantlist hits for all the above except Miller and Glidden, as I was not able to connect to a wantlist. Lynn and Sp;ike, please send me your lists and I'll see if I can get cards back your way. Cards in tomorrow's mail for the other five guys. Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! I got a quick visit from neighboring OBCer Digdugdig this afternoon and he was so kind as to drop off a 4 pack to my young 1956 set...Minnie Minoso isin great shape here, in the first of his 4 or 5 decades of baseball. Former batting champ Pete Runnels, Bill Wight and Hersell Freeman ( His name reminds me of a jewelry store in our old hometown) Great hits from a fine OBCer...and he lives just down the road !! I digdug out some cards for him while he was here too...and that is just asfun Thanks to Doug and the rest of OBC on this fine Memorial Day ! OBCers -- I went through a huge pile of bills, magazines, and other assorted crap to find two OBC envelopes from when I was away! Glidden: From Cambridge, Mass comes a pair of goodies from Spike - a 1957 Mel Parnell and a 1956 Herb Score! Parnell was coming off of a no-hitter the season before, while Score had only a devastating line drive awaiting him. Thanks for the great cards, Spike! Mead: The next one says Columbia, MD and Denise Mead on it, but I'm guessing it's Peter in disguise who sends me a pair of high number woodies - Marty Kutyna and Dave Philley! Philley actually played quite a decent career for a guy you don't ever hear much about. I've always liked his 1960 card with his glove sticking out of his pocket! Thanks a bunch, Peter! Take Care, Geno
