Hi all... as the baseball season begins in earnest, I'm beginning to surface from my hibernation. I've been working hard at my current temp job up at Creighton University with sincere hopes that it might turn into something permanent... no verdict yet (so prayers are appreciated!). Anyway, it's time that I stay up one night and give thanks to the many good folks who continue to send cardboard care my way. First off, a HUMONGOUS thank you to Kit Okamura for an amazing package with two old nonsport leather cards that Steve Rittenberg had asked me to help ID for Kit. When I had seen the scans, I loved the challenge and I secretely coveted (shame!) the cards. I could hardly believe it when I opened the mail and found them on Monday. To make the package even more special, Kit adds in a big handful of '74 Topps football cards that were all needed. Thanks, Kit... very, very much! I'll find something for you soon... Second thanks goes out to Kevin Martens who sends a really cool threepack with a pair of '63s (including Joe Pepitone!!) and a '64 of Jeoff Long... never seen that spelling of Jeff before! Awesome cards from an awesome human being... thanks, Kevin! Next in line, a big thankyou goes out to Bob D'Angelo for a true Tipton gem '66 of Mel Stottlemyre. In addition to filling a hole in the set, it made me laugh which was much needed... Thanks a ton, Bob! Crossing the boundary line of thanks here for a moment (oops!), I wanted to thank Kent Montgomery for a nice package with a check for Girl Scout cookies and some goofy Pokemon cards that my daughter *loved*. They may be UV, they may be nonsport, but you should have seen her smile when she realized that the cards Kent sent finished her first ever complete Pokemon series (Base 1 for those of you with kids... ). Thanks Kent... I loved watching her love the cards. I feel awful that I've fallen so out of touch with a group that means so much to me. I'm downloading the 500+ e-mails that I'm behind onto my computer and I'll get through them when we go on vacation up to my dad's place this weekend. I also am almost certain there are older thanks that haven't been said and I hope to catch up on figuring out which patient souls are due a big serving of gratitude. BOB BANNON saw that and responded by sending along a baker's dozen from the set to pad my existing collection by 50%. Favorite cards in the stack: Johnny Groth and Don Lenhardt. Both played for the Browns in '53 and that team was just moving east to become the Baltimore Orioles for the 1954 season. Since nobody knew what the O's uniforms would look like, Topps and Bowman artists had to guess. While both players had similar-looking jerseys, a sharp collector will see an apostrophe on Groth's shirt (while Lenhardt's says "Orioles" without a break in the e and s), and the really sharp collector will note that the Orioles on each player's cap face different I've always overlooked the '54 Bowman set in favor of other 1950s issues. It feels like much longer than one week ago. Terry Dietrick came down here for Lynn Miller day. I pulled lots of late 70s cards from him (for 3rd sets) and he helped me move some furniture!! Peter Mead, Doug Smith, Lynn Miller and Andy Cook showed up the next day. All had stuff for me, ranging from Bowman commons to football to even more 75s. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. During the week, I got some waiver wire 54 Bowmans from Bob Bannon and Mike W. On Wednesday, I met up with Howard, Schott-man, Ken, Lynn, Mac (plus son of OBCers Chip Morgan and Hank Miller) at Orioles Park in Camden Yards. Another 54 Bowman hit from Howard at the game. And afterwards I got the benefit of the calm-headed Ken and Mac as I dealt with my blown radiator. Also got TWO puffies from Mike Rich on Wednesday. First one had the last two 52 Topps red backs I need (still need some Red Sox red backs). Other one included a Globetrotter hit, some TCMA Red Sox and a 58 Tigers (alphabetical) card. Now I can put the numerical version in its proper Last night I was treated to a one-on-one with Lynn Miller. In exchange for more UV junk than one person should own, I showed Lynn my collection. And I learned that (ugh!!) a 62 Uecker RC that was promised to Lynn has ended up elsewhere. :( :( If anyone has an extra (or a lead on one), let me know and I'll purchase it. Keith Summers sent out a box of cards this way. Half were intended for Lynn Miller but they all ended up with me. I swear that I did give Lynn his puffy at the ballgame but he decided that since I already gorged myself on his late 70s cards, a few more that he got from Keith wouldnt hurt. And Lynn Miller came over on Thursday with his son Hank. We swapped stories for a few hours. Lynn bought the pizza (and Im still eating the leftovers) plus he gave me even MORE cards. Jim Beauchemin responded to a plea for help. As I was looking through my Kelloggs albums, I found I had two WILLIE Davis cards in my '74 binder but no TOMMY Davis. Back then, there were so many wide open spaces in the old stadium that a player could sit in the stands and nobody would even notice. To risk a ramble - another Stadium Tribe story. Went to a game once, my friend and I went to get sodas - by the time we came back, two Indian players (Don Hood and Dave Duncan) were hanging over the bullpen wall, trying to pick up our girlfriends. I had the pleasure to meet one of our own, Rick Svetecz, on Saturday. I remember about a month ago on the ramblings server that Rick mentioned he moved back to Bethlehem and is staying with his mom. I grew up in Easton, the neighboring city to the east of Bethlehem. Rick and I met in Bethlehem, just minutes from his home. Fighting the traffic, I found a parking spot and called Rick. Turned out he was just minutes behind me, but he was also fighting traffic to get to the mad house known as Walmart on the day before Easter Sunday. Anyway, there I was, waiting in front of Walmart wearing the white and blue hat when I see this white SUV approach me, the guy also wearing the white and blue hat pointing at me. At least I knew Rick from the pics on his site (sans moustache). I walked up and greeted Rick as he was getting out of his SUV. Finally, I met the "The Biggest Phillies Fan on the interstate"!! I went back to my SUV to get my gift for Rick. I mentioned that 1980 was a good year, especially for the Phillies Fans, and handed over the 1980 WS yearbook. Pretty exciting to see the Biggest Phillie Fan all giddy over the yearbook to add to his collection. Rick handed me a couple birthyear hits, they were of the same guy with the green tint version (oh no, I guess I'm collecting the green tints now, thanks pal!) and some nice looking 55s. Thanks a bunch Rick! I had the pleasure to see the Johnny Callison collection, tons of photos, oddball stuff and cards, half of them were autographed by the man himself who Rick knows pretty well. To see this impressive collection, Rick opened the back doors of the SUV and there we were sitting in the back in the middle of the Walmart parking lot making sure my foot was not run over by passing cars and admiring the Johnny collection. Some of the places Rick mentioned brought back childhood memories - in fact, when I mentioned about the V7, "yeah, we used to go there all the time for minature golf and hit golf balls" Rick said. When I told him my house was just a block from the V7, I probably ran into a future OBCer a long time ago and didn't even know!! A pretty horrendous shank from the tee would probably hit my house, as I used to see many golf balls in the streets after a busy day. The days of the $1 seats at the Roxy Theater to see Rush, Golden Earring are long gone, same as the Whizz (I hope I got that right, Rick correct me if I'm wrong) for the best cheese steaks in the area - I still say it's Geno's and Pat's in Philly. We talked for about 2 hours (boy was it a nice day for a change) when it was time to leave. Some great quality time spent with another fellow OBCer. On my next trip to the area, I have to make sure I listen to FM 100.7 in the morning to hear Rick Edwards (a.k.a. Rick Svetecz). Good luck to you Rick, hope Deb and the kids make it to Bethlehem soon, and it sure was a pleasure to meet ya! Until next time, Persistent heartburn? Two cards from '73 were joined by two Yanks from the '60 Topps set. Not just any two Bombers, but Kubek and Whitey! Once again, I'm floored. Away from OBC, I have gotten the Winfield RC from eBay and will now focus on picking off the last 22 cards I need for the '74 Topps set (plus some variations the are now on my wantlist). My other focus will be the '55 Topps set now that I'm past the halfway mark...98 to go on that one! I don't think I'll be getting any of the big 3 rookies soon, but getting most of the commons is a fairly reasonable goal for this year. Thanks again to three great collectors! Paul Biggs sent some UV ockey goalie mask "cards" that I had never seen before. Debating on keeping them for myself or letting my nephew steal them. He loves goalie cards, but these are a neat item. Tim Newcomb sends what may be described as a SCP. A 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson!!! Now the original card has a lot of paper loss from the front. Tim took care of this by sendign a spectacular color copy of the front. I do not know where he got this photostat, but it would have been a fine addition by itself to the collection, even without the actual card. As if this wasn't enough, Steve Rittenberg sent a package that made pick up the phone and call him to give thanks. Steve sent me 8 of the last 9 1976-77 OPC Hockey I needed (#111 Bouchard is the last). This had been my "weakest" OPC Hockey, as it also reduced my overall OPC hockey run from 1968-1985 to 7 cards. That is right, he sent 8 of 15 to complete the entire run. These were NOT even the highlights of the package though. My all time fav set is the 1935 National Chicle FB with a goal of getting 1 card per year. Steve took carre of 2004 with a #7 Strong which is one of the key cards in the set. I now have 16 of 36 in the set. Steve then blew me away with 16 Ice Kings. For those not familiar, they are probably the most popular prewar hockey cards. Hi All, More enjoyable and successful that I could have imagined. The only regret is not having more time to see more friends and stay with the family. Next time I'll try to do better. But to finally meet some of my very good buddies in OBC was a super treat and moments that I'll cherish forever. Now I can add "OBCers I've Met" to my wantlist. I returned home on a couple of down notes. I had entered my travels on what happened when and where in my PC on drafted emails, but drat it, lost it twice when connecting to the Internet while on the road with my laptop. I still haven't figured out what went wrong there. I just hope I can still recollect it all and get the events and thanks correct now. It was definitely a whirlwind time. Also I developed some food poisoning on the plane ride home. The last few days since I got home have been literally miserable and haven't spent much time too far from the bathroom. But I've turned the corner there now. Maybe is was all that "diet change" eating those "foreign" foods. Soft pretzels, hoagies, Philly cheese-steaks, etc. that did it :-) I confess to ruining my dieabetic diet, but they were good! Hey, once every 10 years can't hurt? So it's going to take me awhile to recompose all this stuff, sorry for the lateness. Got to my destination hotel in Washington DC at about 3AM on Sunday morning, April 4 having spent about 22+ hours in transit. There was an arranged meeting that day at Steve's place and Trader Doug was staying in the same hotel. I had put a call in for 7am but apparently slept right through it. Can't understand why. Get a call at 8:30am from Doug to hustle it up. Get downstairs and meet my first OBCer who promptly greets me in the OBC way "here's a little something for you" and "Hi, I'm Doug". As if I didn't know. Of course I do the same. But I look at the clock on the wall and it says it's almost 10am. Huh? Well just my luck I come in on the night that you go off daylight savings time and I lose an additional hour of sleep. Somehow it didn't matter at that point since I was reveling in my first OBC meeting and we were off to Steve's place. Steve called while we were leaving to "remind" us we were late. Yeah! Arrive at Rittenberg Palace and greet the Great One hisself. Also it was great to meet Peter Mead for the first time. Peter also had some things for me. We've all said it before, but it's so true now that I've experienced it. When you meet one of your buddies in person for the first time, it's like you've known them so well for years that it's a natural thing and you don't feel the awkwardness of meeting a stranger. I was right at home, as it should be. I also dumped off the 50 OBC hats that we had made in the Philippines and I dragged halfway around the world. The greetings and euphoria settled on, I opened the envelope Doug had given me. Wow, a 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson. My birthyear set and also very ironic that Jackie broke into the majors that year on the day I was born, April 15. Thanks Doug for an extra-special card. Then Steve hands me an envelope and some other items. And I'm sorry here if I get this mixed up, which I'm sure to do. But the envelope was from OBC with a note about it being a little early for my birthday but this gift is from a "large number of my good friends in OBC". Holy Batman! A 62 Mantle All-Star, 52 hi number, and a couple of great vintage Aaron cards, 1960 Nu-Card HiLites & 1964 Topps Stand-up, both in really great condition. Hey, that can't be from OBC :-) And there is a promise of more to come. Wow, it's too much already. That's the last regular Mantle card I needed, besides of the course, the one I'll never get probably. Just as I'm reveling in this wonderful bounty my good friends have bestowed on me, there's a phone call. It's the Constable himself, the mastermind of this event as it turns out. Grant told me how he had anticipated our meeting in Vancouver airport but when that fell through, he arranged to have the gifts presented by Steve. Thanks so much Grant, Steve and all the others for making my birthday so very special on a number of fronts this year. Couldn't think of a better way to spend it. Steve also gave me some other great Hank items and a 51 Topps Redback. He also gave me a very Tipton 65 Topps Larry Miller, with a comment to the effect "You should start a collection of all players named Miller". Thanks, but don't think so Steve, nice try. Peter managed to find a 51 Topps Redback and a tough Blue Back. Peter also gave me a Kelloggs box from the early 90's that he had purchased in the store and ate the cereal a long time ago (I hope so). But the back of the box had a Baseball Greats stand-up of my hero Hank. Thanks Peter for the really great additions. A few minutes later Terry Dietrick came by and was great to meet another OBCer. Greetings and pleasantries exchanged. And shortly after that Andy Cook arrived. Hey, we were getting like flies! Andy found me a super 52 hi that was definitely an upgrade. It was a little trimmed but nothing like the "trimmed down to the size of a 49/50 Bowman" one that I had. Now I can read the whole card back ;-) Thanks Andy! Steve managed to take all my 75-79 dupes for his "umteenth" sets he was building. I had brought all my dupes with me in the hopes of not taking any back home, so this was a good start. The time at Steve's was too short, had to get back to the hotel for a social engagement and Doug had to catch a plane and gave me a ride back. But before we left, there was one other little item. Two tickets for me and my son Hank to attend the Orioles/Red Sox game on Wednesday at Camden Yards. Yes!!! But it was truly great to have been to Steve's and met so many of my great friends. I didn't get near enough into Steve's treasures as I had wanted to. And boy does he have a lot. Back at the hotel, as I was getting ready for my social evening, my son Hank arrived. He had lost his way hours earlier and finally caught up to me. He had carried an item he had been holding for almost a year. It was sent by Bama to him to hold for me because it was too big to mail to me. Now one of the most prized possessions I have. An Autographed Hank Aaron model H&B 34" Louisville Slugger. Yahoo! Bama, this is so great to finally have this item in my collection. The wait was definitely worth it. Can't ever express how much I appreciate this item. He probably never did hold it, but it's nice to think he may have. My next adventure in OBC was THE GAME! This had been pre-arranged by our Balmore connection, Ed Schott. Ed had told me prior that he needed my support with him for the O's since we were surrounded by Sox fans. How could that be in Baltimore? Hank had a car, so after my Navy duties were done on Wednesday afternoon, we took off for Camden Yards. We knew we would be a little late and I had told Ed to expect us by the 2nd inning hopefully. We got there and had to park outside the Stadium. As we were walking to the park, we passed a sports bar that had the game on the loudspeakers and the Sox had just scored their 7th run in the top of the 2nd!! Yikes, the game was over already? Fortunately our arrival halted the bleeding for the O's. We get to our seats and of course received the directions to our section with "Hey Lynn over here!!!" There was Ed, resplendent in orange. I didn't have to be introduced to Ken or Howard or Mac or Steve again, just knew who they were! Howard had driven from Philly, and had also brought along his son Chip who lives in nearby Annapolis. Ken was taking a break from the tables in Atlantic City (I think he saved money by coming to the game). Ed handed me a fistful of cards of Dave Winfield, my second favorite player of all-time. Ed had read my bio, very perceptive. Of course, later I discover there's a great Superstar card "inserted" in the pack of Mick & Hank! Ed also handed me an envelope from Keith Summers stuffed with goodies. Thanks Keith for making the "extra effort". Howard had some great Hank Aaron items again. Mac gave me a great looking 52 hi of Pirate Jack Merson. I didn't know there were still cards in this series that had all the paper, no marks or tears on them. Thanks very much Mac (I'm still waiting by the way). Ken gave me the most memorable piece of all, my very own "OBC autographed" baseball to commemmorate the event. This along with my ticket stub will find a prominent place here in the Miller home. The game became unenventful after that point, a few more runs were scored but who cared. One comment though. I could see Ed's point. What the hey were all these Red Sox fans doing in Camden Yards? Jeez, everytime the Sox did something there was this BIG WAVE ALL AROUND THE STADIUM. Orioles fans definitely seemed to be in the minority. After the game, we leisurely walked along talking and stopped to take a group photo at the statue of "The Babe". Who has that so they can send me one? Howard and Chip had to leave, was great to see them and I had spoken to Howard about getting together when I was in Philly. Somehow that never happened and I'm sorry Howard that it didn't. The rest of us stopped at that local sports bar and had something to eat and talked some more for awhile. Was great, including the interruptions by "Montana Mary" who just had to let us know she didn't have a care in the world. I think she was taken a little with Ed, that beard thing I guess :-) Well we all had to depart too soon and Hank and I had to make our way back to the hotel for my next day's work on the Navy Retiree Council. Hank had a real blast with you guys. Thanks for making him feel right a home. Oh yeah, the hats. Turns out Steve forgot to bring them to give to Ken to take home. So I volunteered to go back to Steve's place the following night to retrieve them and take them with me on my next OBC meeting in Boston in a few days. No Problem! So naturally the next evening after the Council meeting, Hank and I headed over to Steve's. Hank and I had a super time looking at all the cards Steve had. Hank was particularly impressed with the early century non-sport collection. Steve tried to convince me again to start some new sets, almost had me when he offered me a small starter set of 70 Topps Supers. But I begged off. His collection is really something. My wife should see his place, then maybe she wouldn't give me such a hard time about my little room :-D Again the time was too short. But being with Steve for a few times was a tremendous event in itself. The end of the week came quickly and my business was wrapped up with the Navy. Hank had to return to Norfolk to take a college exam Friday morning. I rented a car and drove to Norfolk to meet him and my other son Jeff. We picked him up and Saturday morning headed for my sister's house in Philly. My sister is so special. Spent the rest of the weekend with her and her husband Chris and had a great home-cooked Easter meal. Sis, I think I still feel stuffed. The boys had to return to Norfolk that afternoon for duty the next day. Sure missed them right away. This was the first time I have met my brother-in-law and I was truly grateful. He is such a great guy and what he is doing for my family is remarkable. I called Howard about the meeting on Monday but he wasn't at home, missed that opportunity. Would have loved to meet the Lovely Betsy and see his world-reknowned collection. Monday afternoon hopped on a plane to Boston and a couple of hours later was met by Ken at the airport. We quickly dashed to his place to drop of the hats (mission finally accomplished there). He hands me a couple of items. Two of these plastic cases with a couple of the contest cards for the 57 Topps set that have been on my list. Thanks a ton Ken! Also he gave me an envelope from my OBC Santa Sal Domino. Sal's package never arrived for Christmas, USPS gremlins at work again. But Sal more than made up for the loss with a terrific looking 51 Topps Redback of Boston's favorite Dimaggio, Dom. Thanks Sal for the great hit! Ken took a quick few minutes to fish through my 69's and found a few upgrades for his 2nd set. While he was doing that I was losing myself in his closet of cards. Uh oh, gadzooks, the Holy Grail of card collecting! The very first, live sighting by me of a 52 Mantle. What a thrill that was, holding one for the first time. But alas Ken wasn't parting with him, not even for all the dupes I brought with me. We were finally finished there and it was off to Bob Donaldson's place. We find the beautiful Donaldson Manor. Whereupon we meet up with the master of the house Bob. Spike is there also. We all gather in Bob's room in the renovated rec room downstairs. Great stuff all over the walls and on the bookshevles. Bob hands me a book on Hank Aaron that I didn't previously have and says it's mine now. Thanks very much Bob. Bob has a great little collection of bats also. Hey, what a great idea Bob, take a picture of the "OBC Lumber Gang". This is history in the making! Of course I met my first OBC wife, the lovely Chris, and their children. We talk some more but again, not much time for I have another couple of errands to do. So we sadly said goodbye and Bob was kind enough to drive me to Roberta Redpath's house. What a wonderful person she is, just as I had imagined. Certainly it was a somber moment, but also a very joyful one to finally meet her and talk about Rick. She was so kind to indulge Bob and I even though we could see that the pain was still there. But this was just something I had to do, Rick was such a great friend. Was great meeting the children Ian and Casey too. Ian is quite an accomplished pianist and gave us a brief recital, very impressive. But my time with them was limited also since I had another meeting scheduled with my very dear friend Ron Kingsbury. Ron was one of the first really good friends I found in OBC and we've kept pretty much in constant contact since he life OBC a couple of years ago. He is one of the people I really wanted most to meet in addition to some of my other great OBC friends on my trip. I called Ron from Roberta's house and he picked me up. Ron was kind enough to say a few words to Roberta before we left. I said goodbye to Bob and thanked him for all his kindness too in accompanying me. It did help. Ron and I headed off to a wonderful dinner at a really great restaurant and got to know each other a little better. What a guy! Bigger in life that I had imagined. We then went to his really beautiful home and I met his very lovely bride Andrea whom I've also come to know well over the past few years. But the hour was already late and I didn't have time to spend with Andrea that I really wanted to. So Ron and I adjourned to his "card room" to just talk and look and look and look at some really great cards and talk some more. Ron is a huge Ted Williams fan and there's stuff of "The Splendid Splinter" everywhere. Ron's collection is really something to marvel at. A very comphensive and extremely impressive collection. I had been aware from early on that his condition requirements were above, way above, the rest of us. Wow is an understatement! Some of his old "star cards" look better than some of the UV stuff. It was so grand to finally sit down in person and talk to such an old friend, just like I did with all the other good friends I met on the trip. But I had to catch a red-eye flight back to Philly since I was leaving that next day for my trip back home. Ron retired and I went off the the airport, albeit so very reluctantly. But with a promise to meet again next year for sure. It's great to have had the opportunity to finally catch up with my family and to meet so many good friends, but also sad that there wasn't a whole lot of time to spend with all of you. I sure hope I haven't left anyone or anything out of this. If I have, my aplogies. It was a very frantic 10 days but a time I will never forget. Thank all of you! Mike passed these off on Saturday night when I stopped by his place, he also passed along (3) `78 Elvis cards (?), (2) `65 OPC Baseball cards of Phil Regan and a Tiger Team card, a `67 OPC Baseball card of the 2nd game of the World Series, (6) `68 OPC Baseball cards with Houk, Hart, Savage, Oliver, Ethridge and Williams, a `69 OPC Baseball card of Horace Clarke, a `74 OPC baseball card of Henry Aaron from his "Tribute" set, and a `75 OPC Baseball card of Tiger Nate Colbert. You might have thought that Mike had just come back from Toronto or something. Mike continued the barage with (5) `67 Philly Football cards with Reeves, Caffey, Carr, Morrison and Retzlaff and finally a `71 Kellogg's Football card of Jess Phillips. Can you tell we haven't gotten together since January. What can I say Mike, I'll be in touch after the game. Thanks for a fine evening and I hope to see you more often in the months to come. So I say thanks to these fine fellas and to all - Thanks for your generosity and friendship. BE WELL!!!! Hi gang, Two more envelopes landed at my doorstep bearing cards. The first is a SCP from John Pgsley, who is glad to finally be able to hit my list with a very young looking Rusty Staub. Rusty is pictured as a member of the Colts. I remember John asking in an e-mail if that was pre-'Le Grand Orange'... I would suspect so, but perhaps someone else could confirm when he got the nickname? THANKS Mike Weirzbicki sends along seven more hits to the list. Travelling side by side in the envelope were Tony Kubek of the Yankees and Ed Bressoud of the Red Sox. You can tell there was some sort of rivalry going on, as Ed's card has shifted way over to the left (away from Kubek in the envelope) revealing an Oriole player's card on the right hand side. Tony's card looks like there may have been a scuffle on the way over and he got the worse end of the melee. The delivery also included Pepitone, a team card as well as a carefully marked checklist. THANKS MIKE!! There is no end to kool Gus stuff! The very kind Mark Talbot has sent down a treasure, yet another one new to us! This is a beautifully presented catalog page of advertisements for catcher's mitts. Of the five pictured and described, of course the Gus A2412 model was the one to have! (and we do!) Our holdings here at the Gus archives have expanded yet again!! This is a beautiful piece and our folks are just going bonkers! My description above fails to do justice to the precious item, nor to the care with which Mark has presented it to us! At work, my office desk is a very fine executive one with a leather top. When things are cleaned up, nothing sits upon this desk except the famous Gus ball (1996) and the aforementioned Gus glove (2003), yes, the very same A2412 model. These both of course are from OBC (Rick E. and Rick S.) kindnesses! Now I have Mark's very nice description of the famous glove to show interested Mark, you have made my day! Thank you for your warm note.
