It gave any Boston show a run for its money, especially in OBC attendance. No less than 8 of us, with 4 Bobs. Made us think of the Monty Python Austrailian Philiosophers sketch..."Mind if we just call you Bob to keep it clear?" Made a couple of decent deals at the tables, but the best part was just seeing a high percentage of vintage to look through. And this year, the heating system at Hooters was working, so we didn't have to wear parkas during lunch. I snapped a few pictures along the way, to be posted shortly. Thanks to Bob Farrell for a 67 high number, Jim Hatch for a pair of oversized cards, Bob Donaldson for a 1969 stamp, and Steve Rittenberg for a pair of junk wax card pulls: some guy names "Spikes" and the #5. Earl promptly gave me a birthday card and inside were even better birthday cards including 2 1988 Pacific Bb Legends (a retro set0 that completed my set - Fidrych and Lolich. He also gave me 3 of the last 8 or so 1997 Pinnacle on my list. Ron Perry matched this gift with a 1934 Bb matchbook of Charles Grimm. Later Ron bought an album of Tigers and gave me a few Fidrych items out of it, including a 1978 Burger King, 1977 Topps Cloth and a Wiffle Ball card. After the show Ron and I made it to a store, nothing there and then to Eastside Mario's where he bought lunch. We got 2 platters of chicken wings which we finished along wiht 1/2 dozen sodas. At the show I also got some 1967 Dexter Press Tigers, including my HOM, Willie horton, which finished the Tigers set for me. Add that to a 1967 Red Sox Coke cap I got in yesterdays mail and I finished 3 sets this weekend. Plus I purchased a 1986 Cains Tigers BB set for $2. Great game! I don't miss the games that are over by the third quarter. Though I'm not a fan of either team, I always enjoy watching a defensive game like that one. It was terrific to see Brady and Delhomme in action though. Thanks to Vinatieri's kick to win it all with 4 seconds left, nobody will remember the two that he missed earlier. That's where he's different from Steve Christie; he won the game when it counted. Was it just me, or did a buch of the commercials cater to the lowest common denominator? One had a dog bite some guy in an area that God only meant to be treated nicely, and another featured a horse with a gas problem. My daughter liked the commercial where the guy had a monkey on his back -- literally -- and I liked the Pepsi commercial with an 11-year old Jimi And I'm not surprised that there was such a great game, but the media attention focuses on a mistake made during the halftime show! It seems to some reporters, the game is secondary when someone accidentally exposes Janet Jackson's right breast. Oh, well...there were some treats for me in the mailbox today as I recover: ED SCHOTT hits my Steelers list with some '72 Sunoco stcikers! Here are the highlights... Bob Reed - (who also put me up and put up with me two nights) I received a ton of basketball cards including a 73-74 Wilt, Kelloggs (Red Sox cards plus HOFers), OPC and Topps Hockey, Davy Crocketts, team cards and some original owner "traded" cards. Bob Farrell - I received about 20 team cards, half presented to me at the show and the other half at his house. Also I received the #1 card from the Civil War news set and a big pile of Man on the Moon cards. Jim Hatch - two great names from the 51 Bowman set (Hopp and McCosky) and a Davy Crockett card. Brett Domue - 5 of the last 11 Kellogs 1970 cards I need (incl Palmer and Brock) plus 5 Post/Jello Red Sox cards. Gotta make a list for those. Bob Pigeon - A box full of great non-sport cards with lots of Batmans, Marvel Super Heroes, Baseball Weird Ohs and others. I can't wait to really figure out what is here. Plus Bob was our host at the local Hooters. Seems that Bob is to Hooters as Norm is to Cheers. Bob walked in and loads of women turned around and said "hi Bob!". Spike Glidden - Spike gave me a box of 77 football which I had given to him. Then he gave it to Ken to give to Sean. Sean gave it back to Ken to give it to me. But I never showed up so Ken gave it to Spike to give to me. Plus, Jim gave Spike a ride to the show so he probably should get some credit too. Bob Donaldson - for NOT giving me some sports books this year. I'd have appreciated and enjoyed them but the books would be read before I worked on more important things. Its better for me to hold off right now. Plus Bob Donaldson and Bob Reed sorted out the cards from the wax box I bought and we opened up before the wings arrived at Hooters. Sean McGowan (in absentia) - the aforementioned football cards plus some empty albums (which were stored in Ken's car, Spike's house and Jim's car before going to me). Turns out that Bob Donaldson and Bob Reed needed them more than I did so they split them up. Ken Morganti (in absentia) - credit for the football cards and the albums. And I'd like to thank the academy for making this night possible. ;-) Show report to follow. ================= Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 20:50:50 -0800 (PST) To: obc thanks From: Matthew Subject: Big hits! Since pitchers and catcher's don't report until next Friday, I'll use a golf term as my subject line. Yeah, yeah, I realize it's February, but I live in Norteast Florida, where I get to work on houses in a few golf & country clubs...and wonder why anybody would actually pay money for a house where I can pick up loose golf balls in their side yards a lot more often that you might expect. Speaking of work, I returned from my job this evening to find that OBC envelopes outnumbered the bills! I love when that happens (even if I only get ONE OBC package!) Thanks go out to the following friends of cardboard for their RAOKs: MIKE RICH sends along a baker's dozen (or for me, the number of strokes I need to get through a par-4) of hits to the '66 Topps set. Nice stack, too. Aparicio, Tommy Davis, a Senators team card, Hank Bauer and Yank IFs Boyer and Amaro are among the gang. Mike sends a note apologizing for the rough shape, but as a proud owner of a "Tipton original" -- Larry's former Joe Morgan RC -- trust me that these cards won't look out of place. JOE DUFFY sends along some cards I claimed off the waiver wire once he gave them their outright release. What would be a better thing to send to a guy who fixes cable problems all day than a stack of nine cards from the '55 Bowman set! Some of these pictures aren't so clear as they were in the showroom, but that's OK. Finally, a "chip schott." ED SCHOTT sends along five commons for my 1971 Topps set-in-progress. These cards are all from the really cheap seats (all the way up there). More than that, these "black beauties" are going to stand out from the other cards that really don't crowd those final pages of that bider! Thanks for the goodies! I completely forgot to mention that Mike Rich who accompanied me down to the city to meet up with Peter also provided me with plenty of baseball memories through cardboard. Mike started the evening by handing me a box of card protector pages for Tobacco cards that he picked up for me (dealer scum) at 1/2 price. Then as the evening went one he presented me with other assorted items; an unusual "Funky Facts" card depicting my HOM'er Norm Cash with a piano leg in his hand, a `73 OPC card of Hank Aaron, a `72 OPC card with HOM'er Norm again as one of the A.L. HR Leaders, a `62 Topps Mickey Mantle AS card (dealer scum for $15 - WOW!!!!) and if all this was not enough a total of (18) hits to my `69 Milton Bradley quest including Santo, Tiger McAuliffe, Perry and Petrocelli. I passed Alltel Stadium (home of Super Bowl XXXIX one year from today), and then made my way to Bay St. to head toward the expressway home. With downtown streets, Main Street divides the east and west streets; in other words, 1st Street east of Main is E. 1st, and the other way is W. 1st. Getting back to my trip...while waiting at the light to turn onto East Bay Street, I saw something that made me smile: the sign said "E I just found that to be funny. Interestingly, Jacksonville's E. Bay St. is the home of the police HQ (and the county lockup). It would be something of an irony if this E. Kit Okamuro discovered one from the other set I started last month and likewise mailed a SCP hit, this time to the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set. I still need more than 90% on this one. THANKS KIT!! Kevin Martens mailed me cards that I sent to him by accident. It's not like I'm getting desperate to open mail. I'm not sending cards to other people to mail back to me. I didn't do it. You can't prove anything THANKS KEV!! The last puffy on the desk is from Josh. He already reported the trade on this server, but it's worth mentioning again. I swapped a few T205 from my set for the same ones in his set with Polar Bear backs. You see, just finishing the set isn't enough of a challenge. Somebody help me ;-) THANKS JOSH!! That clears the slate as far as I know. I feel so much better now. Some of you may remember a rambling request for help I sent out a couple of days ago. My ClarisWorks (PC version) database of my entire collection crashed, and, although I had several back-ups, the most recent one of them also crashed; and I was left with a 11/29/03 version that was the most recent I could open. I had put a great deal into the file since then, so I was really stuck. Yeah, I know that I am a little obsessive/compulsive about my record-keeping; but it is a thing with me and I was bummed. To make a long story a little shorter, Erik decided to take on the challenge and was able to retrieve enough from the damaged file to provide me with a pretty clean text version that I can use to put things back together much, much faster than would have been otherwise possible. The strike was averted with an eleventh hour agreement that pretty much kept the existing contract in effect for another three years. This has some good points and bad like anything. The good part is that the contract issues are resolved and the stress I've felt wondering about what I might be doing in the upcoming days is gone. I "was volunteered" to be picket captain and we would've been outside during some of the coldest nights of the year in the next couple days, so that's also a relief. The bad news is now that we're back to work (which we actually didn't leave), there's no one left to DO any work. A couple days before the Superbowl (which I tried to attend, but didn't get in due to a couple thousand other people with the same idea and less than a dozen tickets to be found) one of my coworkers severed a couple tendons in his thumb and went out for at least a month with surgery and rehab on his schedule now. Last week the crew chief hurt his knee, forcing me out of the dairy and over to grocery to run the crew. Next, my replacement in the dairy slashes a 7 stitch cut in the palm of his hand (I thought it was getting bad, but why was everyone slashing their wrists over work?) I'm not done yet.... not even close. Two other part timers are then canned for no call/no shows. Both had a nasty habit of forgetting how to use a telephone when they couldn't make it in. Then finally last night before the day of the big contract/strike meeting, the guy in the dairy (third string if you're still trying to keep track) tells me his brother in law passed away and he's taking the next three days off. Talk about trimming down the roster. On a brighter note, a couple packages came in to relieve some of the anxiety. Most recently was a Sunday delivery from Bob Reed. No, the USPS hasn't picked up the extra day, much to my dismay. Rather, that's what happens when you don't get a chance to pick up the mail on Saturday and it sits in the mailbox all day. Anyway, Bob picked off three 1970 Topps posters from one of my most recent additions to the list. THANKS BOB! Friday the thirteenth saw two two envelopes arrive. James Moleta and Ed Schott combined to hack off a bunch of 1969's (including Martin, Weaver and Oliva), a few T205's with Polar Bear backs, and a trio of 1959 Fleer cards. THANKS JAMES and ED!! Dear Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, Steve "Bob", Spike "Bob", Jim "Bob" and Brett "Bob" - Imagine my glee when I opened the package from BOB (to the 8th power) and found one of the loveliest! versions of a Van Lingle Mungo card that I have ever seen!! This one a SIGNED Mungo to boot! Thanks to other OBC Brethren I have a Mungo signature on a 3x5 file card and a 39 Playball card - and now this great card!! I am rapidly building a Mungo collection of NOTE! Do any of you Bob's know what SET this card is from? Or is it perhaps a special card that Van had printed up so he could sign it and sell it or give it away?? I notice he is SMILING in the photo and that is something a bit different for him - at least in an Action Shot! I also can not see the Brooklyn logo or name on his uniform - along with a BLANK back - which leads me to believe that it is a 'special' card of some kind. What ever kind it is I am DELIGHTED to have it and will cherish it for a LONG time to come! I also am grateful to have a SIGNED "Hooters" menu which proves the reality of the 8 "Bob's" who came together to buy me this card! I hope I can 'break wings' with you all in Vegas or some other Hooters someday - and return something that will be close to this wonderful gesture! Thank you and BLESS you all!!! OBCers Doug Smith, Joshua Levine and Kit Okamuro were there as well as Josh's friend Mike (who I have met up with a few times before. JOSH - gave me a wonderful 'first time' card - a 1954 NY Journal American card of Billy Loes! as well as a 55B Matthews and some 72's! KIT passed his 72 box my way and I found a couple. DOUG gave me a 47 Exhibit card (Horizontal!) of Heeney Majeski (Van Lingle Mungo song card!) a couple of Negro League Dodgers and an oddball of Tony Cunccinello. It was a great burger and some wonderful table talk with Doug, Josh, Kit and Mike! Recently HOWARD MORGAN - blasted me with several British Cigarette cards- 'Players' Film Stars and 'Players' Kings & Queens - as well as a Horizontal card of William Shakespeare (right up my alley!) Love them CHUCK PARIS - hit me with a wonderful HORIZONTAL card from the 1951 Bowman set - a beautiful example of a Murry Dickson card! Wow! What a great card Chuck - Thanks! BEN FISHER - Really BLEW me away! with a 1910 E-96 card (horizontal) which is the ONLY card in the set I need to finish the HORIZONTAL ONLY part off - this is of Buck Herzog (scooping up a grounder). What a tremendous card to get in the mail - I just love it Ben! Thank you! I have another thanks - but since it goes out to 8 people all at once (eight men out...?) Highlights include Garvey, McCovey, Sutton, Yogi (as Mets MGR), Perez and two of the much-missed Tug McGraw. Favorite card: the 1973 Graig Nettles for two reasons. First, his picture is badly airrushed; the blue in his uniform wasn't even the right shade and there is an "NY" logo on the shirt (not present on the grey raod uniforms). Second, the cartoon on the back points out that "Most sportswriters spell Graig's name wrong." I can definitely relate! Finally, I am breaking from my policy because I think that it's worth mentioning. Usually, I don't point out when OBCers send me hits that turn out to be dupes (we all know it happens). However, this one was a '76 Traded Oscar Gamble...when Lynn sent it out, it was still the last card I needed to put the set to bed. Since I've already praised Tom Housley as the "set killer," but since he's a lot closer to where I live I'm sure he won't mind sharing the honor with Lynn. Al came out of hiding about a month or so ago and in an email conversation or two he gently reminded me that he was the last one to send me a selection of cardboard. So I got to work on a box of stuff for Al, which was made easier by the appearance of a lone Baseball set on Al's want list. I was feeling pretty good about having "evened up" the score, but Al felt "pay backs" were in order. So arriving today were football and basketball cards from Al. A `51 Topps Gale Galloway, `65 Philly Gary Collins and an `88 Topps Roger Craig 1000 yard Club card bringing that list down to one card. In the hoops department Al ships out a `70-`71 Clem Haskins, (3) `72-`73 Topps cards with ABA FG Lders, Mike Davis and Walt Wesley, finally a pair of `80-`81 Trio's as I close in on that list.
