Hello All,
I was bombarded at the post recently with two huge hits from OBC traders, I would like to thanks:
Andy Cook for a `61 Topps Football card of Clancy Osborne and a `50 Remar Bread card of Dick Wakefield of the Oakland Oaks. A type card and a hit to the old "pigskin list" - Thanks Andy!!!
Don Rice makes looking through my `60's Philly Football binder much more enjoyable with a nice group from `64 and `66 featuring Tom Matte - really cool!!! Along for the ride were a small stack of `70 Topps Glossies that haven't been hit in a long time. Thanks for reminding me about this excellent gridiron subset, it was fun putting them away and looking over those cards again.

Thanks so much fellas - you made my day.

BE WELL!!!!

OBCers --

I received a welcome envelope from my friend, John Storman, today - a Homer
"Dixie" Howell from the 1951 Bowman set! I love the '51s, but the backs
have always bugged me since they don't have any subjects to their
sentences - in a grammatical sense that it. Example - "Got 50 hits for a
total of 67 bases..." Who got 50 hits? How about this sentence - "Had a
.223 batting average." First, .223 is nothing to be pointing out on the
bio. Second, how about "He had..." Third, how about some more meat, like
"He had a .223 batting average, but never missed a team train and hates
Lucky Charms." Thanks for the great card, John!

we need to put a surgeon general's warning on the OBC application page....
  Thanks for the help Doug!

Brian Lindholme adds a nice pair of 1950 Bowman hits to my collection. Unlike
the majority of 50 Bowmans in my collection, this card still has its borders
and the back CAN be read! Thanks Brian for making the rest of my setlook

Joel Freedman sends three 1977 Hostess hits for that list, as well as a uv-era
hit of a non-uv star -- Fred Lynn! Thanks for the help!

Bob Bannon promised to send me a semi-hit for my 1955 Topps list, a set that
had not been hit in half a year. Bob, knowing my love of lower-grade cards,
warned me that the hit he was sending was a pristine card, one perhaps worthy
of a PSA 9.5. I thought he was joking until I got the card -- I swear
that I thought he had sent me a hit for one of my recent Topps Heritage lists
-- I realized I was wrong when I noticed that Harry Agganis was the player
mentioned! What a great looking card, Bob! Thanks for adding it to my
rather rough collection!

Lastly, huge thanks to Father Pat for sending the last card to finish my 1958
Topps set -- Andy Carey! It is not every day that you finish a vintage set
from the 50s, so it Father Pat's puffy was especially well received in this
house! Now, time to add those letter variations....

Be happy,

Got a big package today from TOM HOUSLEY. The
majority of them can't be described here but contained
some great names like Ryan, Stargell, Staub, Nettles,
Rice, Palmer, Lyle, Guidry and the immortal Jorge
Orta! The seven cards I can describe in this forum
were from my monster 1960s lists...a DCP from '61, a
DCP from '62 including Joe Pignatano (who would ground
into a triple play late that season -- his final MLB
at-bat), a DCP from '64 and a young Hal Lanier from

Favorite card: 1964 #311 Tom Brown, Senators. Says on
the back that Tom had been drafted by the Green Bay
Packers as an end but decided to play baseball
instead. That means that Brown ended up playing half
the '63 season with the lowly Senators and gave up the
chance to play for Vince Lombardi and around a cadre
of future NFL HOFers. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention
the NFL championships and Super Bowl rings. I'm sure
he's still glad he made THAT decision...

Thanks Tom, for unloading on some of my UV lists and
the extra help to my woefully large vintage list.

This leaves only 1 card left to complete my entire Topps 60's sets. A

generosity of OBC. You're the greatest. But Steve also sent me some
vintage Hank Aaron hits too. A 62 and 63 Stat Back Exhibit card, the 63
had the rarer red stats. I understand from Steve that there were many
contributors to this effort from the OBC contingent that attended the
National. To all of you who did, my extreme thanks for these wonderful
cards. Just wanted to mention one thing that I've always known about
Hank but these cards show it again. There weren't many real power
hitters who also combined speed. Hank was one of those exceptions. How
many 500 HR Club guys over their careers hit double digits in triples
for the year and how many times did they do it? So you trivia/stats
experts that's the question. I don't know the answer but would like
to. I think Hank would be at or near the top.

Well moving didn't do much for my propenisty for delayed gratitudification. I
hope I didn't miss anyone in the disorganization.
Tom Housley sends me some great '74s including The Toy Cannon, Willie Mac,
and Rick Monday. Monday will always have a spot in my heart because at my first
ballgame (bat day in Oakland in '68) I managed to trade a Rick Monday bat for
a Reggie Jackson. Thanks Tom!
Bama sends me an envelope of '73s that included a very cool card of Pat
Corrales in a collision. I love the old action photos.
Thanks Bama!
Kent Goto sends along two '54Topps including Bobby Shantz. Yes, I have a
Bobby Shantz story. I went to some kind of picnic near Big Sur and found a Bobby
Shantz glove pinned under a fallen tree in the woods. It was flat as a pancake
but I used it for years. Maybe that's why I was so mediocre? Thanks Kent!
Don Rice sends a variety pack of stars including a '74 Kellogs of one of my
favorite A's of all time, Captain Sal Bando. he doesn't look any thinner in 3-d
but his mustache sure is impressive! He also sends along quite an all star
team of '77s including Robin Yount, Tom Seaver, Rod Carew, and Dave Winfield.
Great package - thanks Don!
This is a repeat ( I hope) but I wanted to thank Larry Z. again for a great
envelope he sent a while ago. It was stuffed with cards from 3 70's Topps sets
and 3 '70s Kellogs sets. Very fun package. For volume and variety this was

Subject: Some thanks from October & November

Hello all - once again I am here to be grateful to some OBCers who have
cheered me up with deliveries of cardboard...

DOUG (traderdoug) SMITH - sends along a couple of 72 Topps cards to fill
holes in that set - including bombers manager Ralph Houk - I saw a film
with Mantle and Maris earlier this year and Houk was in it too - he is a
better actor than Mick or Roger but that's not saying much... Also a 54
Bowman of Early Wynn for my Van Lingle Mungo song set...! Love them

DON RICE: sends me cards (again!) and this time it is a pair of 72's
from the Texas Team (recently of Washing DC) - I don't remember Pina or
Grieve - but they look great and fill a couple of needed holes in the 72
set - thanks very much Don!

JOSH LEVINE: Brings me a great card when he comes to meet me at work - a
Cooperstown Post Card of Wilbert Robinson - Dodger manager forever back
in the teens and 20ies and a bit of thirties... Josh also gave me a book
to read about Wilbert and has basically kept me supplied with a steady
flow of oddball and non-oddball cards for the past 8 years or so - Thanks
again Josh for finding another treasure for my Dodger collection!

CHUCK PARIS: comes to California! and meets me and Josh at my part time
work (the Hole In The Wall sports tavern) the day before Thanksgiving and
brings a GREAT load of cards and stuff - 62 Dodger Stamps of Norm Larker
and Charlie Neal - 63 Stamp of Big D! and a 69 decal/stamp of Dodger Tom
Haller - ALSO... a pair of 53 Bowman Color cards that I needed for that
birth year set - catchers Smoky Burgess and Clint Courtney - and a 1963
Exhibit of Wally Moon! (a favorite of mine) and finally a 1943 M&P
company card of Dodger Dolph Camilli!! Work was really busy that night
so I did not have much time to talk with Chuck - but I THANK YOU for the
wonderful cards - I still need to take some more time to read and enjoy
them before I tuck them away in my binders...

That's all to report for now - I am forever grateful to be in this group
- and I apologize again for the lack of communication this year...

I am looking forward to Christmas and hearing about everyone's Santa

He's been retired from submariner duty for a while

across the world, he torpedoes and sinks my 1977 Topps
wantlist! He sends along the Ryan/Seaver Leaders card
to take the title of "Set Killer." As you are all
aware, Lynn isn't content to simply put a notch in his
periscope. He also sends that card some company...a
'75 mini, 2 high # 73s, a birthyear Psycho hit, two
black beauties including Alex Johnson, a '70 Twins
card and 4 from '69 including Cuellar, Belanger and a
McCovey/Santo/Williams leader card.

My 70s lists are getting shorter by the envelope, and
BOB DONALDSON takes advantage of Lynn's salvo by
taking three additional shots off the 1970 list
including Don Wilson and Hawk Harrelson.

Thanks for the very welcome damage! And thanks again

Hello All,

I have been a bit under the weather the past few days and have avoided anything but bed rest during that time. I know that this will be a hectic week so I wanted to thank Brock and Geordie for items sent in the past few days:

Geordie Calvert spanks my `61-`62 Fleer Baseball Greats set with (4) big HI number hits which brings the quest down to a mere dozen cards to go. These babies were sharp so Pie Traynor, Luke Sewell, Dale Alexander and Ossie Bluege are all knocked off the want list. Thanks for thinking of me Geordie!!!

Brock Hattox takes a break from his "globe-trotting ways" and looks me up with (4) splendid hits to the `53 and `54 Redman sets. A many of you know - I believe these to be the most beautiful sets of the decade and Porterfield, Parnell, Avila and Robin Roberts are all safely tucked away - Thanks Brock!!!

To all of my friends in OBC - here's hope for a wonderful holiday for each of you and your families. Thanks to these and all the fine members of OBC I look forward to a prosperous New Year. BE WELL!!!

envelope. Included are exhibit cards from three different sets,
including a tough Rich Rollins card from the standard 1947-66 set, a
1962 Stat Back Eddie Mathews, and a Charles Wheeler Salutation. George
doesn't stop there, adding in three 51T Red backs, two 1953 Bowman
football (including HOFer Lou Creekmur), a 1979 Hostess George Brett,
and, finally, a few commons and Archives for sets. Wow! Now THAT'S
impressive... thanks so much, George. Merry Christmas to all!

Geordie Calvert really laid some lumber to my 1961 Fleer list today - I
needed eight cards when I woke up, and I only need two as I get ready for
bed! We went to London today to see the holiday lights, which were lacking
compared to the lights and windows on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Maybe
it's too many Christmases without snow, but I could go for some sledding or
a football game in Grant Park followed by some window displays in Marshall
Fields...anyway, back to my new cards - Lefty Grove, Honus Wagner, Ralph
Kiner, Mel Ott, Allie Reynolds, and Johnny Vander Meer - leaves me with only
Ruth and Teddy to go! I remember getting Vander Meer's autograph as a kid.
It sorta started me out chasing them, then one day I traded the whole lot
for something, but I can't remember what. Thanks a ton, Geordie - I owe you

I wanted to thank all my fellow collector/traders for their friendship this
year. I have only been trading online for a couple of years and am continually
awed by the kindness. With very few exceptions it is my experience that you
are part of a unique group of selfless people. It is everything that I have
always loved about our hobby.

This year was expansive for me. I expanded from working on a few late 50's
sets to a pretty comanding position all the way back to 1949. I managed to
complete 6 more sets: 54, 55, 58, 59, 62 and 1969 Topps sets. I also embarked on
quite a bit of pre war stuff. I have a pretty good jump on T206's, E220's and
a nice group of E120's that I am really proud of. I have also ventured into
Exhibit cards starting from 1922 and have made the dubious step toward many
set variations.

Most recently I started a typecard collection, 1 card from any set ever
printed, and while I feel like I have a nice collection already, I am only about
3000 cards away from completion! That collection is almost excusively from
club traders.

Well, I'm sure that you have many better things to do, but I appreciate your
friendship and just wanted you to know that.

My very best to you and your family this holiday season,

I've put a draft email in my Netscape browser that has the subject
as "Thanks to Steve". I'm typing it so much lately, might as well take
a shortcut to doing it. The "Inimitable One" does it again. A couple
more really great cards. A Topps 51 Blueback and a vintage Hank very
tough 1966 Venezuelan Topps NL Batting Leaders Card of Hank, Willie &
Roberto. A definite "Dream Outfield" any manager would have given their
first-born for. When I got the card, I had to ask Steve why he sent it
to me since I already have my 1966 Topps set complete. Duh? I should
have known he wouldn't send me a card that wasn't a hit. So he educated
my dumba... again. He also helped my identify a recent Evilbay
purchase of a new Hank card since it turns out it wasn't easy to find in
my SCD but it was in his newer version. I guess I'm going to have to
pick up a newer version when I come to the U.S. in the spring again.
Too expensive to mail those big things here. Thanks a heap again Steve
for the great cards and the help.
Andy is always coming up with great hits for me also. And as with
Steve, seems I can never come up with enough in return. This time it's
one of the last two cards I need to finish the Topps 51 Redbacks set.
Anyone got a spare Duke, he he he. And another terrific vintage Hank
card, a 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes in super condition. I wish I had
gotten my Hank bug about 40 years earlier and been looking for all these
oddball items as they came out. But don't we all say that now ;-)
Thanks a lot Andy for more great additions.
Does someone want to tell me where this year went? My goodness it
zipped right past me for sure. Howard please don't tell me to expect

Hello All,

I am still being plagued by Internet problems at home and therefore I have stopped into work to make a quick email thanks to Geno Wagner and John Leroux.

A few days ago Geno sent to me a splendid `78-70 Topps Hockey card of Guy Lefluer to gently hit the list. I think Geno also sent a picture of some new project he is working on over there in the UK, some top secret flying missile or something. I'll keep your secret safe Geno and of course add the Canadian to my collection - Thanks Geno.

Yesterday, John Leroux got to the Post Office much quicker than yours truly with a `51 Bowman card of Al "Flip" Rosen hot off is American League Home Run Leading Rookie season. This card has eluded me for sometime and now thanks to John it's in the collection. Along for the ride a 2002 Topps Heritage card of Sasaki but the Rosen takes the cake. Kudos John.

To my Secret Santa - Your package has arrived safe and sound and I will hope to report to you and the group ASAP. With the computer problems it may have to wait until Monday.

To all in OBC - Happy Holidays. BE WELL!!!

My Secret Santa was Paul Biggs this year, shooting a package across the

The '67s included a Dal Maxvill and a Ken Brett - funny thing about Brett is

A couple of other thanks go out as well--opened yesterday's mail this morning.

three 51 redbacks (including Tommy Holmes), a 53 Dodger and a green tint

Hello All,

We arrived back from some familiy friends homes late last night to our
own Christmas tradition which is to tear into all the stuff under the
tree. You see when we left yesterday to go to church the only thing
under the tree was my OBC Santa gift. While visiting our friends after
church I sneek away, drive home, put all the presents under the tree
and get back as soon as I can so that when we get home "Santa has
arrived". It's great to see the excitement in my daughter's face when
we walk in and all the presents are under the tree. We got started
about 11 p.m. so I still had to wait about an hour. At the stroke of
midnight I directed my daughter to hand me my OBC Santa package.
Josh Levine was my OBC Santa this year and he enclosed a special
treat wrapped in a message. I pulled the message from the small puffy
first and read it to my family. Josh wrote me to tell the story behind
the item he had sent. It came from his Grandfather who we all know
passed away this year. The item was given to Josh's Grandfather by
Josh himself because the baseball player depicted on the card was a
personal friend of Josh's Grandfather. This item then has obvious
sentimental value to Josh and yet in the true spirit of OBC he shares
it with me this Christmas. It will hold a special place in my
collection as will the special story that goes with the card.
Thanks Josh for the W-502 card of your Grandfather's friend Bob
Meusel. I will treasure it in my collection. BE WELL!!!

Hi, Guys!

Thanks go out to my secret Santa(s)!

An envelope from Harrisburg, PA arrived last week, marked "Do Not Open Until Dec. 25th." It had three high-number hits to my 1966 Topps list, including two of the Rookies Stars cards. Thanks!!

A second envelope arrived yesterday, from Santa in Silver Spring, MD. (I hope that this was simply an OBC show of generosity, and not a mix-up in assigning the Santa targets. If someon was omitted because I received two packages, let me know and I will send a New Year's package to someone.) The card was a 1957 Topps Yogi Berra! Actually, it was two half-cards of Berra, stuck together with a green piece of tape (the color was selected, I am sure, to match the colors of the holiday season). Thanks! This card may now be the most Tiptonesque card in my entire collection!

Best wishes to all, for a safe and happy holiday season!

Hi all... After a hectic couple of weeks, the end is in site for our
move from the apartment to the house. A few more trips and just about
everything but the piano will be moved! The new house has really
made this Christmas special but icing on the cake was my mailings
from my OBC Santas! That's right... somehow I was blessed with two
Santas, though I have a sneaky suspicion one is the year-round Santa,
Steve Rittenberg.

First though, my official OBC Santa was Brock Hattox. Brock sent a
spectacular '59 rookie card of Felipe Alou. Well-centered, great
corners, super color... heck, it's in much better condition that
me!! It's always nice to have one card this nice in my set so I can
see what they looked like when they were new! Thanks a bunch Santa
Brock! I sure hope we can get together at the '05 College World

Now as for that Silver Spring, MD Santa who graces my mailbox several
times each year and always seems to dig up something extra nice for
Christmas, well, he came through AGAIN! Santa Steve sends a fistful
of cards, each an individual delight but together almost mind-
blowing. The highlight of the batch was a '67 Topps Venezuelan card
of my boyhood baseball hero, Harmon Killebrew!!!! Holy cow!! Steve
called a few weeks ago just to "make sure I didn't already have it".
Heck, I'd hardly even heard of them before and now I have one!! On
top of that, he also included a Venezuelan of Dean Chance, Twins team
issues of Bobby Allison and manager Bill Rigney, a numbered UV-
infested glossy Jacque Jones, and an as-yet unidentified Killebrew
that has the shape and design of a 1970 Kellogg's but without the 3-D
laminate and with a blank back. Did they have pictures of the cards
on the Kellogg's boxes that could be cut out? This is way-cool!
Heck, they're all way-cool!! Thank you so very much, Steve! If I
ever hit the lotto, you're going to live a life of luxury!

A third incoming envelope was from John Scott Gray. JSG sends a
terrific '68 of Bill Freehan, reducing that set to a mere three cards
(Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, and the tough, tough card sporting the
trio of Mantle, Mays and Killebrew). JSG also sent a fantastic '77
Brooks Robinson that, when added to a promised incoming '77 of Nolan
Ryan by another great trader, reduces that list also to three measly
cards (#'s 411 -- WS 1 & 2 (Morgan, Bench), 473 -- Rookie Outfielders
(Dawson, Richards, Scott, Walling) and #480 -- Carl Yastrzemski).
Thanks very much, John!! I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas.

My only "downer" today is the guilt I feel at not getting out my
package to my Secret Santa recipient in time for him to open today. I
sure hope that the contents make up for the lack of timing. :-(

Well all, I better get back to my family and finish moving us out of
our apartment. I need to get my card albums and some more of my card
boxes. Take care and I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas and
remainder of the weekend!

A very happy...

It's a good thing my Secret Santa package has been sitting here for 2 weeks,
since our recent snowfall has meant no mail delivery since Wednesday. (My fave
story of the snowfall: our new reporter, in her live shot Thursday, called
the snowstorm a "massive dump". It's not easy to direct a show when you're
laughing so hard that you can't talk!).

Now to the package: no identifying postmark at all, & no name attached to the
note inside, but what a box of cards! Almost 20 1958's, almost 30 (!) 1957's,
plus SCP's from 51, 50, & 49 Bowman, and my very first 1939 Play Ball. Wow !
To my secret Santa, whoever you are, THANK YOU - and if you'd care to ID

Christmas has been particularly fun this year. Our 4 year old grandson is
here and I've particularly enjoyed the look of absolute delight in his eyes from
all of the Christmas things that we tend to take for granted.

One of the highlights of my Christmas was the OBC Santa gift from Peter
Iverson. Peter sent an official Cubs scorecard from June, 1934. With a lineup
that included Cuyler, Hartnett, Grimm and Hack only the Cubs could finish in
third place. The scorecard is an incredible and thoughtful gift for a Cubs fan.
Even Judy is trying to figure out how to display it properly. Peter also
included a 62 green tint of Wes Covington. Thank you Peter. This is a really
neat and unique addition to my collection.

My family decided my computer was too slow and bought me a new one. The kids
want to set it up now, so here's hoping I'm back on line shortly.

First off, Merry Christmas to all of you!

As I mentioned before, my OBC Santa was fellow Dodger fan Pat Sweeney. I opened
my package just after the stroke of midnight, got all excited, but before
I could type out my thanks, I hit a wall of fatigue and called it a night.
Anyhoo, Pat sent some awesome stuff. First off was a Dodgers scorecard
from '75. This brought back immediately to memory a couple of '77 scorecards
that Pat had sent me several years ago. Srambled around bit before Ilocated
them, so now I have a short stack of 3.

Pat also sent some great cardboard. Leading off is a '70 Brooks Robinson All-Star,
followed ol' Lefty himself, Steve Carlton (from '74), and a 4-packof
'80s, including Mickey Rivers, the original Pudge, the Bird, and Ted Simmons.
Pat also sent a stack of '70 football, including Paul Warfield, Lance
Rentzel and a very young-looking Jan Stenerud. Isn't he still kicking somewhere?

All-in-all, a great Santa package. Thanks very much Pat!

Christmas greetings from Oregon's Beautiful Coast !!!!

OBC World,

I have great thanks to send as I was the lucky benefactor from Everett MA'sNorth
Pole sector.

You guys already know how generous Ken Morganti is all year long, and he tops
himself while donning his Santa Wardrobe.

Ken sent the heavy box that I previewed in an earlier note to the group. Today
as I pried away the tape, the contents were revealed !!

A nice message from Ken claims that the goodies inside may be from as far back
as 27 years ago when a young Kenny first started collecting the cherished
cardboard that binds us all together.

That's right folks...anyone who has noticed my wantlist recently could see my
note about needing a 1977 Starter Set . Ken sent what looks to be around400
cards from that set including the sneaky Johnnie LeMaster that has worn
the gremlin outfit in the past !!!! I can't count to 400, but if I could,
I'd say that's a pretty good starter to a set !! WOW !!!

Oh, and you know Ken wasn't finished there. He digs deeper into my wantlist,
sees my fascination for the best NFL QB ever (not the best supporting cast,
Mr Montana...) DAN MARINO cards !!! A few nice Dandy Dans always makes my
day even though Archie's oldest brat might break Dan's TD record, he will
leave Dan with plenty of records to be proud of....

Hey, this thanks is getting as long as a MORGANTI RAMBLE....how appropriate.
I'm not done yet !!!

Ken has also noticed some other sets that needed help from the ol' WL.

24 hits to the nearly complete 1978 set accompanied the forementioned card above.
Andre Dawson, Yaz, Munson, the great afro on Jose Cardenal and the best
3B ever, Mike Schmidt were included !!! WOW !!!

It's not over...3 cards from the best all-time FB set, the 1971's are in this
box. More great hits to the coolest 14 sets of cards I own !! hahaha

But, upon further inspection, our generous Santa continues hitting the list...a
58 Tribesman Mike Garcia !!! Excellent !!

TCP of 63's including Ding Dong Gary Bell and funny stanced McAullife !!

More yet...TCP of 64's with a sad faced Jim Schaffer ( look at #359 in yourset
to see what I mean) Hey the weather's great here Schaffer...smile !!!

It is still going ....TCP from 66 has OBC HOMer Phav Phillie John Callison among
them !!! So cool !!!!

Not over yet, Santa Ken sends a TCP from 1967 with a Cub, a Phillie and a Willie.
Holy cow that's WILLIE MAYS !!!!The toad's list is reeling from thatblow
!! WOW !

I only see one card from 1959...but it's WARREN SPAHN !!! Unbelievable !!!

The SCP from 1970 is one of the cards that is quite tough to acquire for some
reason...it's #660 Johnny Bench !!! I've gone GA-GA with this box of cards

A truly fabulous OBC Santa offering from a truly fabulous OBC guy !!!

That's 2239 letters and 510 words which should help you all know how much Ilove
this OBC thing. Christmas and OBC are a perfect match. Oh, actually with
that sentence above and this one, the new count is 2522 and 578 , coming
close to a Morganti record.

I'll sum it up with just a couple more words ( really....)

THANK YOU KEN &OBC FOREVER !!

Christmas Day - 1:20 PM - Northridge, CA

Just finished a lovely morning with Denice - sitting by the tree and eating and drinking champagne and eating more and opening things...

Now it is off to visit the families but wanted to try to get this THANKS off before then - if I don't get it all written before I have to go then I will save the draft and ship it out when I get home tonight...

When I was growing up in Van Nuys, CA the Dodgers were the most exciting thing in Los Angeles - at least they were to me and probably to many others as well. The years 1962 to 1964 were my prime Dodger years and happened to be great years for the team as well - not to mention 65 and 66... I think LA was still reveling in having a Major League team here. The Dodgers were used to promote all kinds of things - Morrell Hot Dogs, Bell Brand Potato Chips and etc. Union 76 Gasoline was a sponsor of the Dodgers from the beginning and they gave away premiums when you get an 8 gallon fill up. Booklets with stories and photos of the team were first I think - 1960-62 (?) and then they came out with portraits of the players. Around the corner and on my way to school was a 76 Station. I don't remember my folks buying 76 gas so I had to find other means of getting the photos. I ended up with an assortment - which I plastered on my notebooks and pinned/taped up in my bedroom. Although I managed to hang on to my baseball cards I did not have a single portrait in my shoe box when I pulled it out in 1989... Since I have managed to get some of the booklets and even a recording was sent to me that I believe came from Union 76 - I thought I had some of the portraits but I just looked through my notebooks and do not see any - I have a few boxes still to check but I think the batch that OBC Santa Larry Tipton just sent are my first - in this second time around collection of Dodger Portraits.

Wow! What memories these photos bring back - and these are in immaculate shape! Perhaps I need to tape them up in my bedroom so I can really bring the memories back...! (we will see what Denice says...) I love these Larry and have already looked through them three times - reading a couple of the biogs and looking at all the stats on the back - I will keep looking throughout the weekend. A great gift for a Dodger Fan! The portraits include 1964 versions of John Roseboro, Johnny Podres, Jim GIlliam, Ron Perranowski, Tommy Davis and a 1963 Perranowski. I am not sure how many or who is in the set - but I will have to find out and add them to my list.

THANKS Larry for a wonderful and unexpected gift - a great blast from the past that I will treasure into the future...!

marcpeter - Peter

Mike Wierzbicki for five tasty Hostess cards: A Boomer from 1977 and four
from 1975 including a Fred Patek who, IMHO, is responsible for one of the
greatest quotes ever. Someone asked him what is was like to be the smallest player
in the Major Leagues (at 5' 4"). His response? Possibly paraphrasing: It's a
lot better than being the smallest player in the minor leagues. Classic!!
Thanks Mike...they're delicious!

Despite my disclaimer of a recent wantlist posting NOT being a general
solicitation (just for my Santa), Peter Mead put on his Santa beard and sent me an
SCP anyway: a birthyear (1970) high number Bobby Knoop! A very nice looking
one at that! Thank you very much Peter!

My OBC Santa this year is Rob Gioia. I received Rob's package earlier in the
week and couldn't wait to tear it open. This morning I got my chance and
inside was a very thoughtful greeting card suffer with baseball card goodies:
five 1960 Topps hits and an Obak! A cool 1910 series T212 with a "Marvelous

from Rob. Thank you Santa!

the damn high numbers will be keeping me busy long
after I've completed my other 1970s Topps sets).
Grant also sends 2 from '59...3 from '60 including a
hi #, 2 hi # woodies and 5 hits to the '61 set.

My 1961 Topps set is entirely an OBC thing. It's a
set I never really focused on, but over the past 2
years I've had nearly half the set sent my way. Grant
piles on with five...a Braves TC, the immortal Pumpsie
Green and three pitchers. Not just ANY pitchers, mind
you, but two of the Yankees' starters (Whitey Ford and
Bob Turley) and a Tipton gem Koufax!

It's neat to read the back of Koufax's card...After
six years in the majors...three pennants...two world
series titles...and absolutely no time in the
minors...Koufax entered 1961 with a lifetime 36-40
record! I guess he managed to put up some decent
numbers for six more years (perhaps I read something
about him becoming the most dominant hurler in
baseball or something like that).

Thanks Grant...these cards will adorn my binders as
well as any ornament on my tree.

Take care,

different sets (6), different companies (4) and different sizes (4).

In order by size he sent a 1952 Bowman of Luke Easter. That's the first
time I ever got an Easter card for Christmas!

Next up was half of the White Sox starting lineup from the 1975 Mini set.
Six Sox in total include that "fat tub of goo" Terry Forster.

The only standard card in the package was a 1963 Fleer birth year card of
Gene Freese. With a couple inches of snow falling last night Freese was an
appropiate card to send.

Gersch also included a couple of large cards from the 1953 and 1954 Bowman

to the binder.

He was done yet, as he also included a Yaz puzzle from an unmentionable
Donruss set for the kids. I gave that to Connor since he's the Red Sox fan
in the family.

Thanks for the nice variety package Gersh and I hope you and your family had

Thank you to Don Rice for a fantastic Christmas-eve package. Don sends a

duo of 58's, a Topps 60 SCP, and a 61 Fleer Hack Wilson. Thank you Don for
what will probably be my wrap-up package for 2004.

I would also like to like to thank OBC for another great year. Bob
Donaldson, Bob Bannon, and Chuck Paris kindly took more than 100 T206's off
my hands, and richly rewarded me in return. Their generous reciprocation,
in conjunction with OBC-friendly dealer John Morrison, enabled me to knock a
number of sets under the century mark - nine are still in triple digits.

I was able to complete one set this year - T29 Animals, knock off about
1,250 off my cumulative want lists, and bring my 68-72 Topps sets ever so
closer to completion. On the set front, I gave of up the quest on my 55
Bowman autographed set, as well as the T206, 51-52 Topps, 59 Fleer, 48-49,
51 Bowman. However, I added Diamond Stars, T206 type sets, T205, and the
monster of non-sports - the N224. On the player list, most of which is UV, I
knocked off several hundred, and gave up on my compulsive Jim Rice list. I
can't keep up with the constant flow of new, game-used stuff from redundant
sets featuring this long-retired player.

I hope everyone in OBC has a happy and fulfilling new year.

Hi gang,
Bob Neill really is back. He even sent cards from MY list! OK, to be fair,
my list is probably easier to hit than it ever has been before, especially if
you have extra Kelloggs cards in your dupes box. (I still need EVERY CARD for
most of the sets listed... just in case anyone feels the need to send me
cards ) Bob noticed how I sneakily put just about every set onto my wantlist
and fired away at the 1970 set by sending the first seven cards for the binder.
These are very clean too - I can almost still smell the corn flakes on them
;-) Bob also added a handful of Red Man cards to boost those sets along. THANKS
BOB!! (and welcome back). TAYL,

As, yes. The mail has finally arrived after a record breaking snowstormin
Evansville shut down the postal delivery to the outskirts of Evansvillefor
about six days. 22 plus inches doesn't mean much in some other parts of
the country, but here, it's a big mess. Especially when 19 or so of thoseinches
fall in one day. I lugged about 6 lbs. of mail into the house and sorted
out the bills, ads and Christmas cards that didn't quite beat the storm.
That left one box about the size of a book or vcr tape and one envelopefrom
Randy Griffin.
Randy has made it a habit of sending me a Christmas card with extra cardboard
inside for a couple of years now and I was happy to see this year isno
different. A newer hit to an Upper Deck set and an older hit, Gene Oliver,
to the '63 Fleer set. Thanks once again, Randy!
The box had a postmark from Michigan and since I didn't remember ordering
or winning any books I figured I had my Secret Santa package. I was right
as two packages fell out when I opened the box. One was addressed to Wadeand
one to me. Several OBCers hail from Michigan, so I had to investigate just
a little to see my Santa was Mark Talbot. Mark did indeed send a book.Detroit
legend, Ernie Harwell's Tuned to Baseball. Mark couldn't know I was
an avid reader and collector of any baseball related books but he managedto
send me one I didn't have. Mark said in a note that he filled the book with
bookmarks and this was quite true. However, if he thought for a secondthat
I would get to the bookmarks as I read the books, well, oops. I yanked,
(bad expression), them all out and this is what they were;
'55 Bowman Jim Delsing, '56 Topps Tom Hurd, '58 Topps Jim Finigan, '59 Topps
Murry Dickson, '61 Topps Smoky Burgess, '62 Topps Lou Burdette, '63 FleerRalph
Terry, '63 Topps Don Hoak, and a '64 Topps Detroit Tigers team card. Thanks

TraderDoug comes to my 1962 set's rescue with a non-green tint Bobby Shantz.
Still attempting to figure out if any more cards in the binder are actually
green......a scarey thought.

Mike Rich lowers the count to a single lonely 1951 Red Back--Mike sends card
#1 Yogi--leaving only Mel Parnell on the list.

John Scott Gray continues to find some of the worst 1953 Topps in the market.
How does he do it--and feel free to keep sending them my way. Bob Cervand
Johnny Lipon now have a home in my 53 binder.

STEVE RITTENBERG – It’s only fitting that the last thank you should go to
the guy who did the most damage to my lists this year. Steve’s final
offering of 2004 consists of 3 of the last 7 1972 high numbers that I need
to complete that set, the last 1975 Tigers team set card that I needed
(Rookies feat. Danny Meyer and Leon Roberts…..and some catcher named
Carter), a Bill Freehan UV, and a 1961 Harry Chiti which some kid at some

Thanks to both of you, and to every other OBCer out there who made 2004 yet

My friends,

I made it home safe and sound (well, maybe not sound) from my trip to Boston.
I was able to hook up with Ken Morganti while I was up there, as he took
the metro downtown to have dinner with me near where my conference was. We
ate and talked for nearly two hours, and he was kind enough to slide twogroups
of cards into my hands at the restaurant. The first group of cardsare
the kinds of cards that cannot be mentioned in a place such as this, but
the second group certainly can - two great looking 52 Topps hits, a pileof
eight red team checklist variations, and a trifecta of Milton Bradley hits,
as well as some great vintage hockey and basketball! Thanks for the cardboard
and the great conversation -- it was nice to decompress with a friend
after stressful job interviews! Thanks Ken!

There were also some nice packages in my mailbox upon my return! Thanks goout
to Don Rice for sending along some great vintage hockey, including five
sweet 53-54 Parkhurst cards! This is as close to hockey as it looks likeI
am going to get for a while -- thanks Don!

Ron Perry sends some great 50s hits, including nine from the 51 Bowman set, including
Bob Lemon, and five nice Redman cards, including Joe Black! Thanks
for the classic hits Ron!

Ken Goetsch complains in his recent note to me that he cannot hit my lists, but
then comes up with two nice 68 Topps upgrades! Thanks for digging forme

Kevin Martens adds what is now the nicest 52 Topps card I own to my collection,
sending Lou Sleater! Thanks for the fabulous example from one of the greatest
of all sets!

Peter Mead sends holiday greetings along with his latest salvo across my postbox's
deck, including two hockey hits from 72-73 as well as other unmentionables!
Thanks for thinking of me Peter!

The new guy, Shawn Adkins, sends along some new cards, further shrinking analready
short list! Thanks for the hits Shawn!

Lastly, thanks to Geordie Calvert for sending some more great Topps cards --
cards and names that, while they cannot be mentioned on this server, are still
greatly appreciated -- thanks Geordie!

Be happy,

BOB BANNON-Top of things with a six pack of 1954 Topps & 1934 Goudeys.
This is the back end of a recent trade.

Much appreciation gang,

Wasn't sure where to send this one, but it is really a thank you so I'm sending it here.

No mail today. We're digging out from a blizzard today, and I guess Canada Post never heard of that "through rain, hail, or snow the mail must get through" thing so at least there's no bills in the mailbox.

I just wanted to send out a quick thanks to all you wonderful folks for another amazing OBC year. It's been another difficult year for me personally, but made all the more bearable by the precious gifts in the mailbox and the chatroom/e-mail/instant message conversations with you guys throughout the year. Someday I'll payback on all these debts. It means a lot to me to be a part of this amazing thing we call OBC, and I really appreciate and value the friendship we share as members of this group. A heartfelt thanks to all of you, and best wishes for a super 2005.

Bob Donaldson was at my post office today.
Well, at least one of his envelopes was...

Stuffed with 9 helpers for my short 1972 Topps FB list, including Lem Barney
and Fred Cox (think...Flintstones...now do you get it ?)

Thanks Bob for the great OldFootballCards !!
