I have this card already and while there are some noticable differences between the two, does someone know how to tell them apart if it is a reprint. If it's not, why are there some differences? Most notably his left toes are cropped out of the picture and the back is pure white (like it's really new) in the one Ron sent me. OBCers --

I haven't had any OBC mail in awhile, but a pair of great envelopes today
conjured up the Monty Python line in the subject line!

Hattox: Brock surprises me with four gems - a 1957 Al Cicotte, a pair of 51
Bowmans including Billy Cox, and a 1933 Goudey Bill Dickey! I always think
of Roger Kahn's book when I see Billy Cox, not sure why other than it was a
great book - I need to check Ebay for it one of these days. As far as
getting an HOFer Goudey - absolutely smashing, brilliant, lovely, and all
the other Brit terms of complete satisfaction! The back of the card tells
us Dickey is one of the tallest catchers in the AL - that's the best you can
say about Bill Dickey?!? "My, he's tall" -- "Yea, and he hit the crap out
of your curveball today" -- "Yea, but did you see how tall he was - must
have been 6'1" or something..." Thanks once again, my friend!

Gersbach: Larry pummels the 54 Bowman list with a pair with a bit of
history behind them - Bobby Thomson and Larry Jansen! Thomson is Glasgow's
native son, where I stopped for a day this summer to see Glenn. Scotland is
a beautiful place - lots of green hills, sheep, pubs, goats, whiskey, cows,
castles, and more sheep. I highly recommend a visit to Glenn to check it
out, you won't be disappointed! If memory serves me correctly, Jansen got
the win in the game that Thomson hit his bomb, thus the odd connection in
this envelope. Thanks for the cool cards, Gersh!

Take Care, Geno

To: obc-thanks@yahoogroups.com
From: Chris Stufflestreet
Subject: DC-area Thanks -- Rambling, too

I'm writing this email from the business center room
of the Willard hotel in Washington DC...it's less than
2 blocks from the White House and the place where "The
Battle Hymn of the Republic" was written. I'm told
that with Tony Blair in town, I may likely rub elbows
with some important people here.

The hotel's bar is the source of a term used commonly
in American politics. President Grant used to spend a
great deal of time at the bar; many of the movers and
shakers of 1870s politics learned that if they waited
in the lobby of the Willard and were patient, they
knew that they could have a few moments to get the
President's attention. Grant referred to these
special-interest people as "lobbyists" and the name
stuck. I love American history and these little
things make me look past the size of the hotel bill.

Before I go over to that bar myself to sample one of
its world-famous mint juleps (first mixed here in 1850
by Senator Henry Clay), I need to give some thanks to
two fellow OBCers.

Last night I spent the evening at STEVE RITTENBERG's
place, a more OBC-type outing. I missed PETER MEAD,
who left before I got there, but Peter left a calling
card for me...a '69 Bench and '71 Kaline were among
five cards for the trip home. Also in the stack was a
'69 Freddie Patek which lists him as 5' 6" tall. I
thought I remembered him as 5' 4" tall when he played
for the Royals, perhaps I'm mistaken...Thanks for the
great hits, Peter! Sorry I missed the chance to tell
you in person.

While discussing OBC stuff, Steve tried his hardest to
help me close another set (considering he killed my
1978 and '79 Topps lists, he is definitely up to the
task). Steve didn't kill any more sets last night,
but handed over a nice stack of wantlist damage.

From '77, Steve found 3 of the 8 left including a Ryan
RB, Blyleven and Gossage...From '74, Steve had three
of the 5 Washington variations I needed (I have 5
cards left to finish up the master set, and Munson is
the only significant one)...Steve found 11 cards from
'73 including Bench and Bob Boone's RC, leaving 45
cards to put that one to bed...3 from '72 including a
Reds TC...10 cards from '71 including Bench, Seaver
and Gaylord and about 5 Hi #s...6 "cool greys"
including Killebrew, Torre and Catfish...4 from '66
including "traded" cards of Uecker and Eddie Mathews.

My Steelers wantlist doesn't often get a single hit
since I cleared most of the '70s and '80s from it, but
Steve hit it six times. A '51 Lynn Chandnois, three
'69 4-in-1 panles and a single 4-in-1 of Roy Jefferson
mix with a 1981 Fleer card covering Super Bowl XIII
and are now on their way to my Steeler collection when
I get home on Monday.

Most importantly, Steve was able to clear a bunch of
UV dupes from my box...enough to make room for the new
additions to my collection. I get absolutely nowhere
trying to give away those blasted post-80 cards, so
it's great to divest so many of them at one time.

Thanks again to both great OBCers for knocking down my
wantlists significantly. I'm getting really close on
several of these sets.

Now, I'm ready to try one of these mint juleps.
Though, I need to remind myself to keep my political
discourse to myself...I get enough flak for debating
politics with regular Joes, I may have some trouble if
I find myself arguing Constitutional issues with a
member of Congress or the finer points of American
history with Newt Gingrich or somebody like
that...though I'm confident I would hold my own if I
found myself in the situation.

I'll be back home on Monday to check my email and will
let you know if I impress somebody.

Take care,

Steve Rittenberg finishes off the 77-78 set with the checklist ! He also
sends a 77-8 Bobby Orr for the Orr collection, along with his old Bruins pal
Derek Sanderson (72-3), newer Bruin Bob Miller (80-1). I just watched ESPN's top
50 athletes of the past century segment on Orr - just goes to show you that
even being the best athlete in your sport does not mean that everything will go
your way, as he and so many other players were robbed by their representative
Allan Eagleson. Steve also included a mystery Colorado Rockie from the 80-1
Topps set, which features a scratch-off box with the players name hidden. I
am not very active collecting cards these days, and thanks to Steve more hockey
sets are still getting closer to completion.

Thanks also to Kent Goto for some 64 Topps, including Hank Aaron's younger
brother. I am guessing that Tommie's career got a boost (i.e. getting to the
Braves) from that, but the pressure must have been rough. Geno Wagner also
checks in from the UK with a contribution for the 64 Topps set. Thanks guys !

Hope to get updated lists posted.

What a surprise! I got a package with a pile of 47 cards from the '62 set
thrown into a post office envelope. It had no note or anything, just a
surprise stash of 47 woodies that I had never seen before. Now the
investigative work had to begin. Which club would have a member that would
send 47 cards from a 42 year old set without working out a deal first? I
immediately checked my OBC roster to realize that Ray Luurs was indeed an
OBCer. That really wasn't much of a detective challenge though, what other
group shows as much generosity?

Thanks Ray, I really appreciate the help.

Wll gang, spent a depressing Sunday watching both New Jersey teams lose (can
it be the Bills are the only NFL team from New York?) but found two envelopes
in the aftermath of a weeklend long reorganization following the (almost)
completion of our renovations. Bama sent along a 62 Pumpsie Green, with a cartoon
on back scandalously suggesting Pumsie "pumps his mitt"! Great stuff.

Don Rice sent along about 16 1964's, including a fistful of Mets, Yanks and
stars. Wow!

Well, the dupes box has been liberated in the renovation afterglow and I will
be hitting some lists in the next couple of weeks but if anybody needs some
1975 topps starter lots, let me know as I have a bunch of these in nice shape.
It's cool my dupes are liberated but I haven't had a kitchen for 4 months and

A couple of great packages arrived today, the first I opened was from Don

of her basketball sets, and for me were 10 hits hitting 5 sets, included was a
1970 Brooks Robinson, a 1971 Alston, and 6 1965's

The second package was from Fr. Pat which in all honesty was payback that I
had forgotten about. However the good padre included a 1969 Johnny Podres, a
few more 1970 high's and a 1969 WS card.. Great stuff....

Now that my high school soccer reffing is done, I will be getting back into

Hello All,

WOW!!!! I was expecting a package from Bob Bannon as he let me raid his stash of recently acquired `56 Topps Baseball dupes. I wasn't prepared for the fine shape in which these items would arrive. Not a crease in the bunch, a few with some minor writing but very sound cards for the vintage.
Now most of you know that I am on the insane quest to cover the base set and all the variations. Bob sends me what has to be the single biggest assault on this set in many years with (9) hits to the list. And oh the names; Ray Boone, Ron Kline, Monte Irvin, Gil McDougald, Don Newcombe, "Pee-Wee" Reese and (3) Team card variations with Baltimore, Cleveland and Cincinnati. I have been looking over these cards for most of the evening, a number of these cards I have been hunting for for some time (I've been sniped out of more "Pee-Wee" cards than I can count). Bob has truly taken my breath away with this fine offering - I can only hope that my return offering will be as adequate. Bob - Thank you so much!!!

I had a great visit with Pugs in Honolulu. But he really didn't adequately
describe the visit. We had planned on meeting at the airport during a layover
between my flight from the mainland and my flight to Kauai and have a beer or
two. Well there were NO places to have a beer at the airport without going
through security, which requires a ticket. Anyway, Pugs really wanted us to see
the tough conditions members of the airforce have to deal with at Hickham
AFB. The challenge was Pugs' jeep only had two seats, and I had Judy with me.
So I lay down behind the seat as we buzzed through the Hickham checkpoint. The
challenges of AFB security!! Then there was the beer at the enlisted men's
club ... why the palms out the window were not Royal Palms like the airforce
deserves ...NO, they were just regular palms! Can you imagine our hardworking
airforce dealing with regular palms? But the beer was good, the conversation
better, and I left with an assortment of cards. Much appreciated Pugs! - Doug

Thanks to Bob Bannon for two nice 56 Topps Frank Torre and one of my
all-time favorites Bobby Shantz. The addition of those two shrink the
number of missing cards in that set to only 38. Thanks, Bob!!

An amazing package in today from Don Rice. Don sends 8 hits to my 70 list, which
was 1/7th of the entire list! In addition, Don sent along a couple of
72 nosebleeders which reduced my list to an even 100.

Thanks Don for the awesome package!

I never met an OBCer I didn't like....

OBC Thanx goes out for recent incomings to:

KEVIN MARTENS-To send great hits. This was no exception.
A 57T-Nosebleeder of Pete Whisenant. Luv those old Redlegs.

BILL MALSON-Set down a couple of goodies from the northern part of
Ohio, 65T-Roznovsky & 61 Postie-Romano.

BOB BANNON-The worse for wear, brings in two sharp looking 56T's.
This set is now down to mere 7 cards to go.

PETER MEAD-Gives a Hoot with a three pack, a 62T-Greenie,
a 61 Fleer & a 61 Nu-Scoop.

DON RICE-Is nice, but not has nice as the dozen 75T-Minis he sent.

ED PIKE-S package PEAKed out at 53 cards, smashing the 75T-Mini list.
This is my attempt at an all OBC set & 72% is already been
knocked off.

MAC WUBBEN-Attacks with a 58T-Tiger Bats, Kaline & Kuenn
and a 61T-Hi#-Valdivielso.

Much appreciation gang,

OBC World,
In today's economy 4 incomes might still not be enough to make ends meet...but
today's mail brought enough sustenance to whet my cardboard appetite!!

Paul Biggs from the Neighborly North sent a Dick Butkus from 1971 Topps FB !!
You must have all heard the story on that set by now so I will just say THANKS
for hitting my fave set !! Paul doesn't make him travel alone...he sent
a real nice 55t Joe Cunningham to keep him company. Thank you Paul !!

Peter Mead mails a few from 1958 !! His note shows surprise that I just posted
the 1958 list. My collecting is crazy enough that I now collect every Topps
baseball set Pre-80. Most of them are listed on my WL, but some numbers
are still being gathered. These hits show that Peter is paying attention. He
really gives a HOOT !!
Thanks man !

Trader Doug joins the fun with a pair of woodies and three more from that new
1958 set we just discussed. Those are some great cards, Doug...I need to"trade"
you some in return !!

Last envelope in a very nice mail pile today was from new friend Paul Timmons.
A football card trader from another online collector's group, some of you
may know Paul. This is my first interaction with him and he's a good guy!!
We swapped emails and football cards with me ending up with more of those
crazy 71 FB's that I love. Just great !! He's recommended if Paul considers
OBC some day.

My friends,

Matt Heilenman sends a great 1971 Topps coin of one of the great home run hitters
that never gets mentioned in the same circles as many others -- Willie
McCovey! Thanks for the coinage Matt!

Bill Malson sends a very nice pigskin SCP of LA Rams running back Dan Towler
-- from the great looking 55 Bowman football set! Thanks for helping me diversify
my cardboard portfolio!

Also, bug thanks to Father Pat for sending along a great puffy packed with five
semi-high and high hits for my 62 Topps set -- pulling me under 20 cards
from finishing that set! All the cards were really nice to -- they put the
rest of my collection to shame. When I got together with Father Pat a couple
of months ago he was nice enough to share his collection -- letting me
take a look at some classic cardboard. The next time we meet I will have
to bring my binders to show him what REAL DOGS look like!

Jim Wiehe gets back into the swing of things with two nice 55 Bowman high numbers,
and an even nicer note letting me know how he is doing (and also threatening
that his Creighton might actually beat the mighty Salukis -- FAT CHANCE!)
 Regardless, thanks for the flat!

Thanks also to Bob D'Angelo for sending two flats my way -- each packed with
hits to a recent Topps set that cannot be spoken of (kinda like the firstrule
of Fight Club), eighteen in all --thanks for helping me finish up some
recent business as we move into the new year's pleasures!

Thanks to Peter Mead for sending a 62 Topps high number of Bob Turley -- those
high numbers are always a pleasure to mark off the list -- thanks for thinking
of me Peter!

Last, but certainly not least, good friend Bob Bannon sends along four VERYNICE
56 Topps back variations -- so nice that even my wife was impressed! Thanks
for your generosity, putting me even DEEPER in your debt!

Thanks for all the cardboard pleasures!

Be happy,

Hello All,

With Thanksgiving fast approaching I want to thank a number of traders for their generocity over the past year. All these people have hit my Topps baseball sets this year.

Thanks to Bob Lent, Rob Church, Harold Ondernick, Bob Schaub,
Larry Beil, Kevin Webster, Shawn Adkins, Mike Rich (3X), Bob
Bannon (5X), Kerry McGinley, Mark Rhodes, Brock Hattox, John

McLaughlin, Jim Wiehe, Bob Reed, Bob Farrell, Sean McGowan,
Mike Sandals (as well as a whole lot of eBay buys) who have sent
Topps items since late November of last year as I have been continuing
my quest toward the Topps Baseball run from 1951 to 1980
(including variations). I now need only 728 Topps card thanks to all
of your help.
It was my intention to change my focus this past year and focus on closing some sets. I got close but finishing off sets was far more difficult than I expected so I am continuing to strive to complete the Topps run!!! The `65 Topps set WAS closed out this year and I am very close on a few others. I would
still like some help closing out 1972 (3 cards left) and the 1954 set (5
BIG NAME cards left) - I'm so close on a few of these it would be
great to close them out by the end of the year.
I have not posted this list in a year, perhaps by posting it again it can generate some hits and spark some trades. Here is my updated
posting of the Topps Baseball want list for those of you that would
care to assist me - I will do my best to reciprocate. Here it is:

I have a lead on the "fuge". He is hiding out in Denver, Pa. And he has a
weakness, he collects and trades baseball cards. He sent a clue to my house
in the form of the last 4 cards that I needed from the 79 Topps set. I'll
have to follow up on this lead and track him down with some return fire.

Thanks fuge.....

OBCers --

Brad Chambers launches a few torpedoes at my 1967 World Series Roster
collection with four Cardinals and Red Sox! One of them was a perfect
Reggie Smith RC, a Mike Ryan, and an Elston Howard wearing Yanks gear but
appearing in the Series as a Red Sox (Sock?). Those three will all hold
spots warm awaiting future Coke Caps, OPCs, Venezuelans, etc to add some
diversity. The last card, Phil Gagliano, is the one and only card for him
that year, so it has a permanent home. Gagliano got one pinch-hit
appearance and couldn't manage a hit in Game 5. Thanks for the great cards,

For those Cheers fans out there, the subject line might bring a chuckle from
the time Cliff went on Jeopardy! Father Pat meanwhile sends four pitchers
who have never been in my kitchen, but all of whom appeared for the
Cardinals in Game 6 of the 1967 World Series! The four are Woodeshick,
Hughes, Lamabe, and Jaster (who took the loss)...and that's only half of the
St Louis blokes who went to the hill that day in a 8-4 loss featuring two
yard shots by Petrocelli. Thanks for the great hits, Padre!

Big thanks go out to GEORGE VRECHEK for a flat stuffed with hits to a wide
variety of sets: a SCP from 74 Topps football; a dozen hits to my 81 Donruss
set; 4 71/72 Topps hockey, including Wayne Cashman; hits to the 72/73 & 73/74
Topps basketball sets; three from the 70/71 basketball set, including Lenny
Wilkins, & a 1964 Topps Coin. Terrific stuff, George, thanks for chipping away at
some of the sets I've neglected for a loooong time!

BTW, George points out how poor the 81 Donruss set is/was - the company only
took pics in Chicago (probably b/c that was about as close to their home base
of Memphis as they could get & still get both leagues), the card stock was so
thin it looks like it was sliced at a deli, and the photography was flat-out
awful - the photo quality on most of the cards in this set looks like it was
taken by somebody with an old 110 camera! (Regardless of that, I'm gettin' close
to finishing the set & the hits are great.)

After a 2-week dry spell, two OBC envelopes show up
today...one was expected, the other was a surprise,
but both were appreciated!

JSG sends an SCP from a chat session earlier in the
week. While mentioning that I needed 5 cards to put
the '77 Topps set to bed, he pulled a Dale Murphy RC
for the effort. It wasn't too long ago when that card
was the hottest in the hobby.

The second envelope was a very welcome surprise...DON
RICE is the first to hit my 1975 mini set by sending
20. Among the hits were Killebrew, Brooks Robinson
and Steve Garvey. But that's not all...Don also sent
four '77 Topps cards of the 5 I needed...another
Murphy RC and a Mets card included.

Now I have a dupe Murphy RC (anybody interested?) and
only one card to finish the '77 set: #6, the
Ryan/Seaver Leaders card. Any heros?

Thanks again to both Don and OBC's "doctor of
cardboard" for giving me more reasons to be thankful!

Went back home to check the mail for the first time in a few weeks. Waiting for me were three envelopes full of great cards. In no particular order thanks go out to:

Don Rice for a smorgasbord of hits from '68 to '72. Don delivered a few clutch hits to the 1970 Booklets set with Gibson and Johnson, two Kelloggs ('70 Nolan and '73 Sutton), '68 Billy Williams and Yaz WS, two high numbered black beauties, and a psycho Billy Williams. Great hits all around. Thanks!!

Lynn Miller for yet another fantastic package chock full of fifties hits. (4) 57s, (5) 58s, (1) 59, (3) 60s, (1) 61, (3) 65s, and a 67 Mays CL. Phenomenal cards to rarely hit sets. Thanks!!

Art Wainwright delivers a great SCP of Bobby Young from the 1954 Topps set. Check one more off that developing set list. Thanks!!

Thank you to the above three for great hits. Next check in at Christmas!

OBC cap goes out from Biscuitland to:

Mike Wierzbicki - who sends a TCP of 59 Fleers, all with that vintage feel.
These are aged to perfection, with that unmistakeable smell of old
cardboard combined with appropriate creases and layering. You can have your
PSA 9's; give me the real deal. Thanks Mike.

Have an error-free season.

A big thanks goes out to FATHER PAT for sending over 100 hits to my newly
listed 1970 set! A bunch are over #600 too! As with all the packages you send,
they are very much appreciated!

Thanksgiving was great, nice coming back from school to see everyone. Hope all
of yours were good as well. I had time to update my lists (realized I only
need two more commons on my 1979 set and three commons on my 1977 set) when I
got home, and also brought a lot of dupes back to school with me. I will be
heading to the ft. washington show as well this weekend. If you are planning
on going send me an email and we can all set up a time to meet up or
something. That's about it..

Thanks are extended to JSG for a couple of 53 Topps that were unceremoniously
yanked out of a scrapbook. Heck--I think the good Docter is attempting to
one-up me with some of the worst cards I have ever seen. 40-60% paper loss
on the back--creases, typing on the front of each card, and even a staple
in each card--wow--nice stuff!!!

I accept the challenge--so expect a Tipton Mint gem sometime on your doorstep.

Many thanks,
peter mead

Hi all,

Belated thanks are due...I only check me mail a couple times a week but
alas...the latest incoming from the USPS was "hand delivered" by my new
landlords to my door!!

Amongst the usual was a notice that me rent is going up 18% as of the
new year!!!

So, special thanks out to a couple of fine OBCers as a couple of
WELCOMED envelopes were also in the mix.

TOM HOUSLEY sends an SCP to both the 56's and 67's...the 56 Blasingame
has got to be sat on a few more times to catch up with "the Mick"!!!
!!! Mucho thanks, Tom!!!

And JOE ISAAC continues his assault on giving me future memories...oh, I
haven't forgotten the 1960 J.C. Penny/Billy Martin card!!!

Lindholme...I think I now have another one of your "wrong back
variations"...can't tell though...the front says Bill Hall but the back
is GONE!!! Aahh, use your imagination!!!....shoot, must be a "Mick"
back!!! I'M going to Bora-Bora!!!

Joe also sends a pretty clean example of one of the Boyer
boys...Ken....is this a reprint!!

Many thanks to both Tom and Joe..and don't take me wrong, or outta text
Joe....SUPER thanks!!

The memories that will come back when I look at these cards in the
future....now THAT'S OBC!!!

Thanks guys!!!
