Brian Dwyer ================= Date: Fri, 2 Jan 2004 13:08:14 EST To: undisclosed-recipients:; From: cardclctor@aol.com Subject: What's he do for excitement? Hi gang, I greeted the mailman as he made his way through the snow flurry. I wasn't waiting around for him. I just happened to be near the door when I heard him hit the front steps. Yeah, I was watching TV and I got up to change the channel because I couldn't find the remote. It's not like I was peering out the window every five minutes and between commercial breaks to see if his truck was parked down the street or anything. I was just checking to see if it was still snowing. So what if the windows were all fogged up? That wasn't because I was breathing on the glass with my face pressed up against the window for a long time. Those windows always fog up when it snows, honest. Anyway, even if I did wait for him to get here, it would've been well worth it. Two envelopes fell out of his bag after he fell and I helped him up. No, I didn't tackle him. The walk was slippery so I offered him a hand up the step, really. After he scurried off with that dazed look on his face like he always does after he leaves my house, I promptly ripped open the two envelopes. The first envelope arrived from newbie Jason Ursaner. Inside were a couple posters from the recent Red Sox playoffs and even a ticket stub to what turned out to be game 4 against the Yanks. I think I can still use these posters for this year's playoffs since there's a chance I may go in on season tickets with a couple of friends... we'll see how that turns out, since this is the second or third year in a row they've asked me about buying a bunch of games. They've always wimped out on getting the tix, so I haven't been to see Fenway in a couple years (probably the last time was with some of the OBC guys). Jason's package also included a Ken Griffey, Jr. card, which unfortunately automatically disqualifies it from being further elaborated on. Still appreciated all the same. THANKS JASON!! The other arrival is a puffy from Brad Chambers. His note reads "Found some - not very exciting, but at least I can send you a few cards." Well, let's see... what's so exciting about over TWENTY hits to my 1969 set, other than it's over 1/4 of the remaining list!?! As if I was gonna fall asleep crossing off numbers and slipping the cards into the binders! But wait! There's one here with a blank back. In fact, it's not a Topps card at all - looks like a Post cereal hit. I turn the card over to reveal the name - ROGER MARIS!! Yeah, what a letdown. Actually, if I hadn't been sitting in the big easy chair, I might've been 'let down' all the way to the floor... nothing exciting!?! Makes me wonder what Brad WOULD consider exciting... "Ho hum, we're gonna jump out of a plane two miles up in the sky. Yawn." Sorry if I got a little carried away with my thank you note. Imagine how much I'll write if someone DID send me something exciting? THANKS BRAD!! After a week-long dry spell, three packages from fellow OBCers show up today and all are outstanding! First up: HOWARD MORGAN. Though he sent the package out a while back (I moved six months ago...hopefully it was updated again in the directory), it was worth the wait as it was filled with stuff that makes a Yankee fan like myself excited. Two articles cut from the Sunday Times in '53 and '58 show full-color team photos of those years' World Series champs are great and also have ads on the back that are appreciated by my eye for old advertising. Grizzly also included a George Burke photo of Myril Hoag, a "no-front" oddity from a post-'80 Topps set and two cards from the Batter-Up set of '34-'36. The players are from the White Sox and Giants, but their Tipton condition keeps me from finding out who they are. A challenge! I love it! Coming up to the plate next: BOB NEILL. Bob sends 47 cards, and 23 of them are set killers! I recently posted the '77-'79 Burger King cards to my wantlists, and Bob wastes no time in sending a COMPLETE set of '79 Yankees, including the checklist card! Reggie, Munson, Nettles, Catfish, Guidry, Dent and three guys who weren't Yankees in the '79 Topps set (Tiant, Beniquez and Tommy John)are now in the binder! In addition to those great cards, Bob also sends a dozen each to the '74 and '66 efforts. The '66s include Clendonon, Ron "I Dare You to Hit Me" Hunt and an unmarked CL. The '74s include Belanger and three Yankees and get me to almost 50 left (plus 7 Washingtons, the "with OF" Alou and #599c). Readying for the on-deck circle is ED PIKE. Ed sends along a box stuffed with issues of Baseball Hobby News from the 1980s! There must be 50 issues in the box...I'll need a lot of time to read through these! BHN wasn't sold in my town, and when I saw the ads in "The Sporting News" my parents wouldn't let me subscribe. These issues cover '84-'88, a period when I was becoming quite involved in the hobby (I was 12-16 at the time), and these issues take me back to a time that -- for me -- was a lot easier and unencumbered by responsibility. I've read through three issues and am amused that a lot of the hobby issues then weren't all that different...some sellers are too concerned with making a measly buck, why can't collectors agree on grading, etc. Thanks for the info, Ed. This will keep me busy for some time! Thanks to all for making this a great Monday. Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. Hello Friends,

A trip to the mailbox created one happy camper
today as OBC members go crazy spanking many of my
sets.  So without further fanfare allow me to thank:

Andy Cook sends me 16% of the 1921 American
Caramels (E121) Set of 120 today.  Yes, (19)
individual cards start me off on a quest I am sure
to regret some day (As I am dreaming about 5
different Babe Ruth cards and 4 different Ty Cobb
cards).  The dealer scum package arrived safe and
sound sending me on yet another quest.  Thanks Andy
(I think)!!!!

Ken Goetsch presents yet another sport entry
with a `70 Topps Football card of Buffalo Bills
guard Billy Shaw.  Nearing ever so close to
completion of another vintage set thanks to Ken's
generosity.  Way to go Ken!!!

Finally, Bob Schaub sends me some green.
Topps Baseball "green tints" that is - a total of
(6) to be exact with Dallas Green, Danny Murphy, Art
Fowler, Wally Post, Pumpsie Green, Ron Santo and Bob
Allison.  These put a big dent into some real
"variation lunacy" leaving just (16) to go.
However, I think Bob added (2) regular cards back on
to the list because I think the Murphy and Post
cards I had in the collection were already "green".
So beware of the "madness" that going after these
"greeniees" came precipitate.  I do appreciate the
sharing of the "green" Mr. Schaub!!!

Monday's are always a delight when (3) packages
from VCT friends arrive.  Thanks to Andy, Ken and Bob for the memories and help
on my sets.  To all in OBC land - BE WELL!!!

The first package to report comes from Andy Cook via eBay. Hooks Wiltse (one ear) with a Polar Bear back - also a nice upgrade to my set. Andy sent the card before I put his check in the mail. Who needs Paypal with service like that? THANKS ANDY!! Another trio of gold borders arrived from Kevin Martens. These were about 90 years newer than the one Andy sent. Kevin also added a 1969 SCP of 'El Tiante' that was nearly as nice conditionwise. THANKS KEVIN!! The currently very busy Robert Pigeon dropped about a dozen more 69's in my mailbox, bringing the list down to the last 50 for the set. I'll soon add the names to the list of numbers at this point now that I'm getting close to the end. THANKS BOB!! Today's mail brough no less than four envelopes from OBC'ers AND a check from the lottery. Four out of six numbers netted me $75 in Megabucks. The last two numbers would've paid only $2.5M, so I'll wait until that prize is worth winning before I hit... or I could always claim I dropped the winning ticket. I apparently also won some kind of card lottery, with the winning prize being sent from all parts of the country. The first installment is a 1961 Post Richie Ashburn, courtesy of Brock Hattox. Less than two dozen to go now. THANKS Mike Rich adorns his envelope with an early football heroes stamp and includes a couple early football heroes on the inside as well. These are a couple chat room claims I made during my brief session with the gang last weekend. THANKS MIKE!! Bob Donaldson completes a swap of T205's whereby I got a Devore with the coveted Polar Bear back in exchange for my Piedmont version. I love getting those gold borders in the mail. THANKS BOB!! Finally, the letter from treasurer Doug Smith arrived bearing a couple of Negro League Baseball Stars from Larry Fritsch Cards, one of whom is a pretty fair player named Jackie Robinson. Also arriving with those is the check I'm adding to the auction money I collected to donate to the Ian and Casey Fund. I'll most likely be making a trip to the bank in Needham on Tuesday. THANKS This weekend I'll be braving the near zero temps (and sub-zero wind chills) to cheer on the New England Patriots as they try to win their second Superbowl in three years. If they do make it to the big game, I'm going to try to be there in Houston to see it. Even if I have to watch it on TV at a local sports bar, at least it'll be warmer than it is here. I cannot think of any time recently when I have been totally stunned by an OBC package. Several were surprises, but none were shockes. A shocker is what I got in the mail today. Robert Pigeon sent an envelope within an envelope. On the front of the second envelope, he wrote that the cards might be a little rough but could be fillers for now. I cracked the second envelope and saw a 56 Topps back. Flipped that card holder over and took out two trimmed 56s. Great hits, don't see a lot of early to mid 50s stuff some my way. I take a look at the second card holder and see a 69 Topps front. Cool, some hits to my short lists. I take out maybe a half dozen cards from the holder and peel away a WS card, four semi and high number commons, a Gil Hodges MGR card, and then I get to the true shocker. A 1970 Topps Aaron, followed directly by a 1970Topps NOLAN RYAN! Totally and absolutely stunned! 2 of the last 10 cardsI need. Ken Monks, another trader from other groups sent over a 62 Topp high number, an oddball UV plus 6 1973-74 OPC Hockey for my white back/gray back quest in that issue. OBC had some great hits. Newbie, Jason sends 11 1975 Topps including someone in the news named Rose for this set I am trying to rebuild. Andy Cook sends along a W-514 Konetchy. Andy warns me to be careful of teh tear. I cannot find the tear. This is my 2nd in teh set, so we all know this means I am now OFFICIALLY collecting the W-514s. Kit hits me once again, this time with a knockout. A 1951 Topps Ringside Joe Louis. One of the biggest cards in the set and a true star here in Detroit. (Joe Louis Arena ring a bell). WOW. What a great start to teh trading year. John starts me off with 4 cards for my newly started birthyear set, 1947 Homogenized Bond Bread. First set of B&W cards I have. The challenge is finding out something about the players since there isn't anything on the cards but their names. But I believe a few of them went on to be Braves at some point in there careers; Pafko for sure, and I pretty sure Bob Elliott and Tommy Holmes were, but don't think Aaron Robinson ever was but I know another Aaron who was :-) Thanks John for the really terrific start. Trader Doug also sends 4 vintage cards. But these are non-baseball. They are Action Gum cards with a Navy theme. I would guess these come from the 30's or 40's non-sports sets that were prevalent then. I'm sure my old buddy Steve Rittenberg can ID them for me in a heartbeat. #14 is Withering Broadside and then there is #36, 56, 57 along with it. But there is also a card of Jackie Robinson, from about 50 years later. Thanks Doug for the great "broadside" and "torpedo shot". Well I'm very proud to announce that I have been selected to serve on the Secretary of the Navy's Retiree Council for a three year term. The Retiree Council plays an active part in the policy-making decisions of the Navy Department as they affect the retired community. This a position I volunteered for because I hope to make a difference on some issues. There are 24 council members from around the world, all Navy or Marine Corps retirees. Co-chairs are Vice Admiral Daniel T. Oliver, USN(Ret) and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps James H. Lewis III, USMC(Ret). We have an annual conference at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington DC. This year it is from 5-9 April. I look forward to a mini-OBC gathering. Not sure how much time I will have available yet. There may be a plan to stay awhile in the U.S. after the conference, so I might have the opportunity to visit other parts of OBC-land also. But don't know if I'll be able to carry many dupes on the plane with me, but I'll give it my best shot ;-) It's going to be great to finally meet some of my really good friends. LYNN MILLER: Lynn sacrifices an Aaron item from his collection, an April ’74 issue of Baseball Digest with Hammerin’ Hank gracing the cover. Tucked in the pages of the Digest were a dozen bookmarks, all of the 1979 variety and every one a hit to my (still fairly easy to hit) wantlist. Congrats to Lynn on his new post, too! I hope he might find himself Stateside long enough to make a surprise appearance at Vegas! MARK TALBOT: Fellow FOOT member Mark does some significant damage to both the 1960 (birthyear) and 1961 sets. I can now chalk off 4 cards (including 3 semihi#s) from 1960, and 8 from ’61 (some great hits here too – Minoso, 2 WS cards, Callison, and more semihi#s). Finally, in order to keep these great cards in line, Mark also sent along an auto’d 1959 Bobby Thomson!! WOO_HOO!! I’ve updated my wantlist with my new annual “targets” for each set that I’m currently working on. 2003 proved to be an extremely successful year for my collection. I only missed my targets on the 1961 set (only 3 cards short), and the 1967 set (9 cards short). The Psychos are at the top of the 2004 priority list, thanks to a great start to the year. Already this month, thanks to ebay, I’ve knocked the Ryan, Carlton TR, Robinson TR, and Orioles team card off the list - all for a total cost of less than $20. There are now only 20 cards to go – all high numbers – and I’ve set my sights on finishing it off this year. Hopefully, since Maureen and I are visiting the States this year, I’ll be able to do some major damage to both this and the rest of my list! Finally, I’ve been a bit quiet of late on the “Sending Out” front. Things have been so busy both at work and at home recently that I’ve found myself neglecting my OBC obligations. I hope to make up for this in the very near Again, thanks to Bob, Lynn and Mark for helping me out. Catch you later! Three OBC envelopes in the mailbox...three strafing runs across my wantlists...three different wantlist areas hit! That's quite a mission accomplished! JOHN "BAMA" HARRELL leads the run with 29 hits to various 70s Topps lists...three from the birthyear set ('72) five semi-his from '73 including Stottlemyre and 22 from '76 including a couple of team cards and "Blue Moon" Odom! Bama's wingman "TRADER DOUG" SMITH fires away at the post-'79 wantlist by hitting the '80 set 34 times! Hits included Lance Parrish, Al Oliver and Frank White. This attack was a direct retaliation for a sneak attack I sent to his own '80 wantlist a week ago. His damage? Just five! This guy sure knows how to return fire! Finally, "MATT-MAN" HEILENMAN brings up teh rear and makes it incredibly personal! This was also in retaliation for an earlier attack I made...seeing as how I killed his '77 Star Wars base set, Matt returns fire with FOUR (!) stickers -- those suckers haven't been easy to track down -- from the Star Wars set another from the '80 Empire Strikes Back set and gets me to within two cards of finally putting away the third and final series of that base set to bed. Matt also sends along three unopened packs of Star Wars cards (from the final three series if I recall correctly), telling me that they can "take me back to the good old days!". Despite the temptation to see if the gum in those packs could be any staler than they were 25 years ago, I'm going to keep these -- intact -- as a part of my completed base set. The special thong about these unopened packs...one of them looks like the first pack of any kind I ever opened...as a 5 year-old in '78, and the Star Wars set was the first one I ever worked on! Though I now have to do damage control (read: update the wantlists), I appreciate evry strike that comes my way! Thanks guys! Take care, I am an avid collector of vintage baseball cards. As information for the new members and a reminder for the old members, each year in February a new OBCAC is selected by vote of the members of OBC. Nominations are solicited on the 1st of February and are accepted through February 15. The election is conducted from February 16 through the end of the month. On March 1 the new OBCAC is announced. Here is a brief outline of the qualifications to be nominated for the Any current OBC member (with the exception of yours truly, Bama) may nominate any other OBC member for the OBCAC who meets the following a) must be a current active OBC member who has been in OBC for at least 3 years b) MUST AGREE TO SERVE ***(very important for you get the person's permission before you nominate them. Don't assume that someone would be willing to serve on the AC without asking. That includes current AC members. Getting permission saves a lot of headaches for me and potential embarassment for the nominated person)*** c) Current AC members are eligible for reelection. In fact there is no limit on the number of terms a person may serve on the AC. Nomination process: Submit all nominations to me directly at obcjohn@knology.net. I will publish frequent updates (believe me you'll get tired of seeing my name pop up on you email). At noon PST on Februrary 15 the nominations will close and I'll announce the slate of candidates for the election that There will be two offices up for election, one for OBCAC Facilitator and the other for OBCAC voting member. The Facilitator does not vote on AC issues. For a description of AC duties click the FAQ link on the OBC home There are 8 positions open for AC voting members and, of course, one for Facilitator. In addition a 9th voting member will be elected as an alternate in case a voting member leaves the AC. Election process: Beginning the evening of February 15 the slate of candidates will be announced and the election will continue until noon PST on February 29. The winning slate will be announced the evening of the 29th. When voting, vote for one person for Facilitator from that list and up to 9 persons for voting member. You do not have to vote for 9 but you can't vote for more than 9. I DO NOT VOTE!!! I will give frequent reminders about the election and report the number of votes cast. I will not publish the results of the election on the server with actual vote counts. However, anyone who wishes to see the actual vote count may email me directly at the end of the election and I'll be happy to send them the number totals for the election. We've found that this satisfies the desire of people to see the actual numbers outcome but spares any hurt feelings or potential embarassment for the nominees. I'm sending this out a bit early this year because Super Bowl Sunday happens to fall on the 1st. So now it's up to you. Hello All, Many thanks to get out to the trading community, so let's begin: JIM BEAUCHEMIN sends a couple of nice hits to the mid-`70's Kellogg's sets with a `74 card of Ted Simmons and a `76 version of Jim Kaat. I love these "oddball issues" - Thanks Jimbo!!! Ye olde Friar BOB CORVELLO send along (6) hits to the monster set of Conlons that I am slowly accumulating - Hall of Famers Dazzy Vance, Herb Pennock and Billy Herman were included. Way Cool!!! SPIKE GLIDDEN sends a near set of 1980 Laughlin Famous Feats, so a new set is added to the list and only (2) cards to go on it. I have never seen these cards though they are similar to the series issued in 1972 except they are blank backed and standard card size. Quite cool Spike - GEORDIE CALVERT does his best to complete the most recent Topps set added to my list. Not the proper avenue for elaboration but none the less I wanted all to know how grateful I am. Over did yourself Geordie - I owe you a few more buddy!!! PETER MEAD and I got together when he was in town this past Monday and I received plenty of great stuff. (3) `60 Nu-Card Scoops so there is a new set on my want list; (4) Citgo coins from `69 including Aaron, Staub, Fregosi and Howard; a `62 Post football card of Bill Forester; (2) `65 Topps Football cards with Norton and Williamson and the best announcement a couple `71-`72 Hockey cards including MR. HOCKEY Gordie Howe!!!! Like WoW!!!!! Did I mention that Peter bought the dinner as well - I had a great evening (despite the weather) and got to bring home plenty of goodies to boot. Let's do it again Peter!!! TRADER DOUG SMITH sends a beautiful SCP from the `34 Goudey set with Pirates catcher Earl Grace. I can't remember the last hit I had on this set Doug so it was nice to take out the other 4 or 5 of these that I have and look at hem all. Thanks so much - Doug!!! Non OBC trader MIKE ADAMS sends (11) hits to the `63 Post baseball set and (3) to the `61 -`62 Fleer baseball set. Nice to still hear from Mike from time to time. Non OBC trader DAVID JEROME who has been emailing many of us for trades connects with me and sends (25) assorted Milton Bradleys from 1969 (I'll have some dupes of these), a `55 Bowman card of Marv Blaylock (a HI number), `61 Fleer Ty Cobb (WOO-HOO) and a very interesting reprint set of `44 Playball cards that never were. If David contacts you he get a big thumbs up from me. Thanks to all, what a great week in cardboard and friends - BE WELL!!! I happily and thankfully acknowledge.. Trader Doug Smith for a three pack including a Gus Triandos! Tom Housley for a foursome that included an "Original" Frank Thomas! Bob Donaldson who, in the freezing cold parking lot today, hands me two more hits that will fit in very nicely. Thanks to all for the cool cardboard!
