The milestone? It gets my main Bowman and Topps list to 300, which was my goal for 2003. Strangely, I did not get any in August at all. This gets September off to a great start. Ray Luurs package was opened last, because he had E-mailed me with the contents. Ray sent me 4 of the last 6 1953 Topps BB I need. Incredibel. 2 high numbers and 2 low numbers. 2 Yanks, a Dodger all highlighted by the high number Woodling. Down to the Mick and #250 Bob Wilson. Also can use 58 of the white text/black text variations. Based upon the above mentioned milestone, I am now down to under 300. Bowman 179 and Topps 117. With 17 weeks left in the year, I hope to get the Topps list down to 100 by year's end. Maybe I can even get to within 150 on the Bowmans by year end, although that may be a bit aggressive for me. Date: Fri, 5 Sep 2003 20:46:33 -0700 From: "Geno Wagner" OBCers -- I can't remember the last time I got three envelopes in the same today, but it happened today: Hattox: Brock sends along a 1951 Bowman Luke Easter card that I traded him for a 1951 Bowman Luke Easter...yep that's right, he wanted a VG one and I wanted a beater so we traded! Easter was a big HR threat in his day, but was shot down by bank robbers while working as in a bank in 1979. Thanks for the card, Brock! Wierzbicki: MIke sends along a die-cut 1955 Bowman Don Hoak to add to my TVs! In a game in 1957, Hoak was on second with Gus Bell on first when Wally Post hit a double-play grounder to short. Instead of letting them get the twin-killing, Hoak fielded the ball and flipped it to the shortstop who didn't have time to do anything. Of course Hoak was out, but the DP was averted. The rule was changed shortly thereafter...thanks for the great looking card, Mike! Gersbach: Larry sends a 1954 Bowman Jimmy Piersall that upon first opening almost gave me a heart attack - It has a bit of paper loss and is a little scuffed, so it looks a lot like a Ted Williams when you've had a few margaritas like I had tonight! Upon further inspection, it was indeed Piersall. I always remember listening to him as a broadcaster for the Sox on the days when Jack Brickhouse and the Cubs were through for the day. Thanks for the card, Gersh! To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: friar4@aol.com Yesterday was one of the all-time great days at the mailbox. First of all, like for many others, my auction winnings arrived in an envelope from Ken Morganti and it was highlighted by a '61 Mays and a '68 Mantle. The surprise, however, was a bunch of O Pee Chee's and a '60 Leaf added by Mr. Morganti for that nominal donation that went out with the auction. Hey Ken, I thought I was only supposed to get some beat-up old card(singular) for that part. We are all humbled by the work you guys did on that auction. Thank you. In yet another envelope, Bob Donaldson hit me with a '41 Playball. In his note, Bob says he "found one" for me. Yeah Bob, you just "found one," ------ a big one! Thank you so much. One more - also arriving was a waiver wire claim from Gersh - a '71, a '63 Fleer, and a '63 Post. The Post was particularly unique - first time I have gotten one in which the paper picture was completely detached from the cardboard backing - a real collector's item. Thanks Larry - very much appreciated. It's always great to see a Phillipine Islands return address because you know he hits the lists fairly hard, and this package does not disappoint! 91 strikes to the 1972-79 Topps sets, with a bunch of highlights: 1972: 29 hits including Billy Martin (with middle finger extended), Yaz In Action and AL RBI Leaders (Killebrew and Frank Robby among them). 1973: 28 with Gibson, Yaz, Yogi and a nosebleeder. 1974: 21 including Palmer, Seaver, Carew and Fisk, plus a "Wash. Thanks out to: HOWARD MORGAN – An envelope from Ol’ Grizz was one of a pair waiting for me when we arrived home. I always enjoy envelopes from Howard….you never really know what you’ll find in them! This one was extra special though. It’s a book…..called Tiger Facts….dated 1953. Incredible! I guess the best way to describe it is, well, it’s sort of like an early media guide. Player profiles, photos, stats, facts. What an amazing item!!!! LARRY GERSBACH – The second of the two envelopes awaiting my return came from Gersh, who passes 9 cards my way. A ’66 Hoeft, and 9 1965’s bringing me a little closer to achieving my 2003 “target” for that set. It also brought my “magic number” for completing a 1960-1980 run down to under 1500 (I know that’s a fairly unimpressive number to many of you, but I’m extremely proud and delighted to have come this far considering there’s a whole ocean between me and the home country of the hobby I love. BRIAN LINDHOLME – The Head Toad checks in to Glasgow, or as he so eloquently puts it (on his accompanying note) “Wings it”, with a trio of early ‘70s Red Wings (what else?). Oh, and perhaps I should also mention that he too did some damage to the ’65 set, with 4 hits – 3 semihis and a hi#. Once again I find myself indebted to my friends in OBC (Question: Can the word “again” be used when I’ve never in fact been OUT of their debt?) Thanks guys!!! Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 21:49:22 -0700 From: "Brian Lindholme" OBC World, This has been a big week for Ye Olde Toad in OBC ! Consequently, this mightturn into a long missive, so I'm warning you now... First off, the eventful trip to the North where I had the pleasure of hangin' with my PNW Homies. Dave Fallen ( what, no nickname???), The Saint, Coffee Guy and the Spirit of Grant all joined me in attendance at the fine Tacoma Dome Show. Long drive made nicer by the opportunity to actually see and feel the cardsI was buying...much nicer than the non-personal eBay approach of hoping what is in the envelope is what you expect... Anyway, big thanks to all of those above for their contributions to my finetime in Washington. Nice cards, but we all know it's not about the cards. It's really all about how to pick on Al before he picks on you. Grant seemed to lose this round...I wish Al's cell phone had a speaker-phone option tohear the quick-witted Canadian comebacks, but Al claims that he's still waiting for one....Al had barely finished firing off the last insult to Grantwhen he started in on Mikee. Seems that Dave and I have some protection inthe pecking order. Plus Al paid for the fish & Chips. He's Holy or something... I spent the night at Mike's on lovely, isolated Whidbey Island. Kind of a pain to have to ferry back and forth, but it was well worth the fine company. I got a look at the "Tipton Anything" collection and the Shrine, ate BBQ Steak, shot some hoops, begged for a copy of the best baseball book ever written (The Glory of Their Times) and got a great deal on high numbered 53's, all before falling asleep like a rock. ZZZzzzzz.... Hit traffic accidents all the way home, but luckily I was not involved. ( That 1953 John Riddle looks like it may have been in an accident though...and some of those old Zeenuts I bought(see below) may have been run over... :>) It was a full 10 hours traveling from start to finish, but I'd do it again , no problem !!! I have to mention Mark Macrae, because it's always great to see Mark , listen to his vast knowledge, and get a few cards at great deals. He's got the good stuff, PCL, E-cards, T205's, etc. Thanks Mark !! Hope to see you againsoon. Another card show in just a month ?? Yikes that one is much closer driving but my wallet hasn't healed from this one... Fine segue into the next thing that got some Toad money. I could not think of a finer way to spend it than to participate in the OBC-EBAY Redpath auction. I bid high and often just like I planned...but most of the lots still slipped by me....but not all of them !! I still was able to contribute a couple Franklins towards the best cause imaginable. Ken mailed off my winnings which arrived today. Some great cards, and a totally great effort on everybody's part. There were some amazing donations going on there !! Lots of $$$ raised so...Let's do it again next year !!! In closing, I have some stacks of cards to organize ,lists to cross off andsome great memories of the last few days, many Thanks out to OBC World....it's the greatest place. ================= Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 01:23:25 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com Subject: RePeter From: digdugdig@webtv.net Hi all, Can't believe it but that guy from Eaglebeak Row "hit" me ole type card list yet again...2 days in a row!!! Some truly great cards. I also need to make a correction on Andy's package from yesterday. I thanked him for a 1971 Washington Senators Traffic Safety card. Turns out it was my first 1970 not 1971. I have about 1/2 of the 1971 set and besides coloring differences have noticed the "a" and "g" in Washington use different type for the 2 years. My 2001 Big SCD does NOT mention the "type" differences, but I think it is easier to distinguish the years that way than by the color. Meanwhile it means Andy sent me 4 type cards, not 3. I think that is a fair trade-off; a type card instead of a hit to a listed set. Yes, I have the Washington Senators Traffic Safety set listed on my OBC other BB WANTlist. I told him that after everybody else claimed some that '66s are welcome here...whether they're on my wantlist or not. After a slight delay (they were sent to my old address), a puffy arrived with 26 solid hits to my wantlist! Hits included Dodger managers of past (Chuck Dressen) and then-present (Walt Alston), as well as Yankees of then-present (Pepitone) and future (Hal Lanier, who shows up on two cards). Also in the package: Johnny Callison and Art Shamsky, and very young shots of Rico Carty and Diego Segui -- guys I remember watching as old(er) men. The DVD wasn’t available for shipment to the States. I was happy to do so, and rather than discuss any of the tawdry cash implications of this transaction, I simply asked David to send me a few cards in return. The payback arrived today in the form of 3 glorious Tigers items. First off, what looks to be a homemade fridge magnet featuring the Tiger Stadium 34c stamp mounted on wood. Next up, the #7 card on my Achievable (relatively) Top Ten list – a 1962 Post Jim Bunning! And finally, the piece of resistance as you heathen Americans might say, my second 1962 Ford Motor Co. Tiger Postcard, this one featuring Larry “Bo” Osborne demonstrating his batting stance in front of the rear half of a ’62 Ford Country Sedan. Mike Rich coined the phrase tonight, I stated that "It was a beautiful night for a ball game" and Mike concluded "Yea, too bad we didn't get to see Mike treated me to a free ticket to a Tiger ball game tonight where we saw Roy Halliday blank our beloved Tigers 6 - zip on just 6 hits. I believe Roy now leads the majors with 21 victories, 2 of which have come in the past 10 days with Tiger shutouts. It's still nice to go to the park, hang out with friends (Mike also brought along his neighbor and High School friend Mark along for the game) and lament when the Tigers played more like a major league franchise. We met earlier at our local Wednesday card show where my "favorite" dealer Harold had a bunch of vintage stuff today - I shelled out $30 and netted 26 cards from the `55, `56 and `59 Topps sets. Mostly back variations and upgrades but I got a few name cards like Ken Boyer, Mike Garcia, Billy Pearce, Clete Boyer, Frank Malzone and a Red Sox team card. I thought I did pretty well smacking up my list pretty well. When we all got into Mike's car to head for the stadium he instructed me to open his brief case and pull out a "short stack". I get to thank Steve Rittenburg for most of the rest as Mike brought these along from his visit to the National. Steve sent my way via Mike (6) Kellogg's Baseball cards and (7) `71 Kellogg's Football cards. Also included were (18) hits to my `71-`72 Topps Hockey set, Mike wasn't sure if these came from Steve or if he had put them together - nonetheless they were all hits. Finally, Mike included (3) hits to my `69 Milton Bradley set with a couple of Tigers; John Hiller, and Mickey Stanley as well as Giant Jim Davenport. So I would like to thank Mike for a "fun" evening at the ballpark and some memorable cardboard thanks to both Mike and Steve - BE WELL!!!! It will take a second coming of adrenaline to sweep the A's this weekend (like THAT will happen) and I fear the Mariners are heading forrebuilding time next year like so many other teams, but what is low (my spirits) can be raised, as evidenced by the generosity of Ed Schott, Lynn Miller and Brian 'Family Toad' Lindholme. Ed and Lynn both sent me cards needed from my wantlist and I sure do appreciate that and them. In fact, what I appreciate the most is being connectedwith this group. Coffee and e-mail and OBC certainly go well together! Thank yous to both Lynn and Ed for their presence, via cardboard. Also, a mention of Brian Lindholme is in order. He bought some '53 Topps HI numbers from me that I had picked up from John Morrison - when his payment arrived there was an awesome CD inside - Jethro Tull for MP3! When Brianvisited our house and asked my 16 year old, Trent, what kind of music he liked, the discussion later shifted to what the 'Family Toad' likes. Trent had not heard of Mr. Tull and could not fathom how flute and rock n' roll could go together. Now he can listen to that phenomenon! Thanks Brian - today, you dah man! My Grandma worked at Bradley University and she always got us sweatshirts - people thought me and my two brothers were all named Bradley, sort of like the George Foreman thing. Thanks very much Grant, and sorry for not acknowledging your earlier. Next thanks go out to Peter. I emailed Peter a couple weeks ago asking a favor. I know not many of you out there follow the Dodgers, but despite having almost the worst offense in baseball (sorry Tiger fans), their pitchingstaff is having a marvelous year. The brightest spot of course has been Eric Gagne. I asked Peter when he next went to a Dodger game, could he pickme up a couple of Gagne t-shirts. These particular t-shirts sport a blue & white picture of a goggled Gagne with "Game Over" in block letters. Whatmakes this shirt really cool though is that his scruffy goatee is portrayed with blue thread/scruff on the outside of the shirt. Well, at least my son Tyler and I think it is cool . So to make a long thanks/ramble a little shorter, the box from Peter arrived yesterday, along with some other goodies: a couple of those Thundersticks I always see on TV - these feature Gagne and "Game Over", a couple of Dodger schedules with Gagne's picture - neat thing about these are they are in Chinese!, and to top all this off, and large stack of '79 football! Wow, thank you very much Peter, both for completing the favor and for all the really neat extra stuff you sent along! Mainly an OBC set, believe it or not. Kit sends yet anotehr package. I am feeling guilty for how many packages he has sent me since joining our group. This time he sends 25 1980-81 Topps BSKB panels for my latest variation venture of trying to get the different panel configurations for this set. Thanks guys. Combined with word that my grandmother may NOT need the surgery she was scheduled for today, and it has made the end of month a lot nicer.
